The Nicene Creed was finalized at the Councils of Nicaea (325 AD) and Constantinople (381 AD). The beliefs expressed in the Nicene Creed are the same as those in the Apostles’ Creed, but are more detailed because it was written to express what the Church taught regarding the heresies of the time. “Whoever says ‘I believe’ says ‘I pledge myself to what we believe’” (CCC 185). The word “catholic” comes from the Greek, “katholikos.” It means “throughout the whole” or “universal.” The first record of the Church being called “Catholic” quotes a firstcentury letter St. Ignatius wrote to the Smyrnaeans, “Where the bishop appears, there let the people be, just as where Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church.” St. Cyril of Jerusalem (347) wrote, “Now it [the Church] is called Catholic because it is throughout the world, from one end of the earth to the other." Trinity Academy Trinity Academy is located at the Father W. For example, he passed the Sea of Galilee, saw Andrew and Simon and called them. It’s as if these men left their homes and livelihoods to follow Jesus with little thought. After all, he was a stranger to most. We must conclude that there was something very compelling about Jesus and his call to them. With hindsight, we know that Jesus’ message was worth leaving everything behind. In fact, we know that true discipleship means leaving everything and surrendering to the will of God. He will provide whatever a disciple needs to follow him but nothing comes before our relationship with God. The compelling part of his call is the chance to serve him and be close to him. Jesus chose twelve special people to be his closest followers and he became their leader. They went where he told them and did what he asked. Jesus is still calling people to follow him today. In fact, he has called each of us to follow him. “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:46-48). COMMUNITY EVENTS & FUNDRAISERS Knights of Columbus Council 618 will have bingo at St. Stephen's Hall, Shenandoah. OUR LENTEN OBLIGATION Church law considers every Friday and the season of Lent as penitential days and times. The practice of penance is a part of our faith and Christian life. When we do penance, we imitate Jesus, who Himself recommended it as necessary to His followers, and gave them the example of His prayer and fasting. The Lenten obligation, as determined for Catholics in the United States by our bishops, requires that fasting be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The law of abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. Who must fast? All Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59. The obligation ceases when one begins his/her 60th year on his/her 59th birthday. Who must abstain? All Catholics who are 14 years and older. What does fasting mean? The observance of fasting means that those obliged may take only one full meal on the day of fast. Two lighter meals (not equal to another full meal) may be taken to maintain strength according to one's needs. What does abstinence mean? The law of abstinence forbids the eating of meat, including poultry. Voluntary abstinence refers to refraining from lawful pleasures in a spirit of penance. Can anyone be dispensed or excused from fast and/or abstinence? Individuals for a just cause may be dispensed by their pastor or by a priest with the faculty to do so. In our Diocese all priests may dispense individuals who are committed to their pastoral care. Those who are ill or have a similar serious reason are excused from the observance of fast and abstinence. Catholics are reminded that they should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation. Are there other obligations which we should fulfill? Catholics are obliged to fulfill what has been called their "Easter Duty." They are required to receive Holy Communion during the Easter time. In the United States this obligation can be fulfilled from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday (February 22nd until May 31, 2015). Those conscious of serious sin are reminded of the obligation to confess their sins once a year. Catholics are also encouraged to make Lent a time of more intense prayer and to practice almsgiving and other works of charity. Parishes are encouraged to continue participation in Operation Rice Bowl. 0218 DM – Page 5 February 1, 2015 – The Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time Attention All Coaches CYO Coaches Clinic are being held throughout the 2014-2015 school year in the following Deaneries: Northampton (St. Anne, 3/28/15). Some people haven’t personally experienced the love of God or the warmth of a parish. Perhaps someone in your life doesn’t know how to turn to God in prayer or how to lean on him for strength or consolation. Telling a friend, neighbor, or coworker your own story could provide the spark she needs to begin a story of her own. Where do you start? A similar situation – When someone confides in you a struggle he is experiencing, consider drawing an analogy to a similar experience in your own life. Include how you felt and how God supported you. Peace obtained through prayer – Not everyone knows how to pray when troubled. Talk about a time you experienced worry or anxiety, describe how you prayed and detail how God brought you peace through prayer. Scripture inspiration – Perhaps there was a time when hearing or reading a Gospel or a homily spoke to your situation and gave you hope or direction. Help your listener turn to Scripture for inspiration. We can’t all be preachers, but we can all be storytellers. We each have a love story of how God has reached out to us. Sharing something so personal can help others see that God can work in their lives, too. Jesus, I Trust In You! Important Diocesan Information If a Prenatal Diagnosis is Poor...You are not alone. Jesus Teaches In The Synagogue This tells the beginning of Jesus’ teaching in the synagogues of Galilee. It makes several points. First, Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath according to his custom. He regularly took time to worship, showing us the importance of communal worship. Second, Jesus read the scriptures, explained their meaning, and finally applied the scripture to a situation. In the process he taught us how to approach the Bible. Some Bible passages can be confusing so explanation is important when we read Scripture. Applying its lessons in our lives is equally important. Jesus came into the world to bring glad tidings to us. Third, Jesus provided details of his mission: “to bring glad tidings to the poor…to proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to announce a year of favor from the Lord.” This passage from Isaiah is a prophecy of the Messiah. When Jesus said, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing,” he confirmed for his listeners that he was the awaited Messiah. Q&A I’m Confused. What Does The Bible Say About Mary Magdalene? Mary Magdalene is one of the most misunderstood figures in the Bible. For some reason she became associated with the “sinful woman” in Luke 7:36-50 or the penitent woman who anointed Jesus a few days before his crucifixion (Matthew 26:6-13). In truth, she is neither. What we do know about Mary Magdalene is that she came from Magdala, on the west shore of Lake Tiberias, was converted by Jesus and became a faithful follower who stayed with him through his final ordeal. Jesus cast out seven demons from her (Mark 16:9), and in gratitude she helped to finance his public ministry (Luke 8:1-2). Nowhere in any of the four Gospels is Mary Magdalene referred to as a sinful woman or a prostitute – reformed or otherwise. However, she is the only person all four Gospels agree saw the empty tomb on Easter morning and the first to whom the risen Jesus appeared.
