Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We gather to celebrate the fourth week of Ordinary Time. The very low temperatures during the winter months have brought
some illness to our community, with many people being sick with the flu and winter related illnesses. We need to keep our
Faith Community and ourselves healthy throughout these months, so it is recommended that you do not need to shake hands or
have any personal contact when we give the sign of peace or enter and exiting from the Church. There are some basic hygienic
steps which we can take, for example wash your hands or cover your mouth when you cough which is very helpful to be aware
of when you are around a public place. Please keep our parishioners who are sick in your prayers. When you are home and/if
you are sick and you want to receive Communion, please call the parish outreach ministers so we are able to come to visit you
and bring the Body of Christ to your home.
We deeply appreciate your support of our parish with your participation in the stewardship campaign on treasure, time and talent. You may already have received a letter of Thank you from the parish office for your income tax, which outlines your financial contribution which assists our parish ministry and mission. Please call the parish office if you need one for yourself or
you have not received one or there are some mistakes on what you have contributed. As you know, our parish staff are working
pretty hard during the week and they volunteer in different programs each weekend. They are here to serve us and they are
very happy to assist us if we are able to communicate with them on what we need.
We congratulated the “American Heritage Girl Troop” that had been accepted at St. John of the
Woods Parish. We are in the processes of organizing all of their different activities that they will
have and will be choosing a troop leader for different activities as required by the Charter in our
parish. You will have a monthly report from this ministry and I am very pleased that we have
officially accepted them and our parish is the sponsor for this Charter. I also thank the parish
leadership team who advised me on the process towards this point and the parents of the girls who are members of this Troop.
I am working with the troop leaders and you can enroll your daughters and granddaughters into our Charter. There are many
other parish activities that you are cordially invited to join us for this year.
We congratulate all the babies who will receive the Sacrament of Baptism this month. I have a lot of joy to visit with these
parents, who meet with me for an interview and pastoral visit. I thank them for being faithful parents who try to be a fine example to teach their child about their Faith (through their actions). Parents spend a lot of time and hard work in raising their
children, because of their love for them. It is through their actions (examples), which is the best lesson that they do to teach
their children each day. We deeply appreciate the CCD parents for bringing their children to the class each week and attend
Mass with them. We also thank the catechist for volunteering their time to teach the children in the parish each week. It is a lot
of sacrifice that you give to the Lord. May the Lord continue to bless upon your love and care for supporting us with all the
Faith Formation programs that we have to assist you and your children! As you know, we have a very strong bilingual program within our regional parishes. We thank the Spanish and the Vietnamese program, which is run by volunteers who believe
this is a need of the community, so they give themselves in doing what they can to have this program.
We thank you for coming to pray for vocations within the last few weeks, while we received the monstrance from the Vocation
Office to pray for vocations with the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Vespers, Rosary, and Benediction towards the end of
a whole day of praying. We thank the core team who assisted us to organize this event.
The Long Range Plan core team on the implementation of Vision 2017 met within the last few weeks. We thank the coordinating minister of each area (that we had assigned for their team) for assisting us in following up with Vision 2017. We have different areas depending on each parish’s need, for example: Communication, Facility, Faith Formation, Finance, Liturgy, Stewardship, Outreach, and Youth Ministry. I met with a representative from each area to ask them to give us a quarterly report on
what they have done in accordance with Vision 2017 (LRP) and what they are planning to do? And, what they need us to assist
them with to accomplish it. I am very pleased to have a very strong team of leadership and we also need to look for some leaders who can fill in the areas of those who are not able to carry on the task and the Key Responsibility Area that they are assigned (as it is a little overwhelming for them). We need your help and assistance in different areas of various ministries, as
your talents and skills are deeply appreciated and important in supporting our regional parishes. We also are trying to recruit
those that can assist us for the LRP from Sacred Heart Parish at this time.
We also thank the ME25 committee who assisted us to share the result of the survey. You are invited to read the information
on the parish website and also in the parish bulletin during the month of November, December and January. There are many
different events from our regional parishes that you are cordially invited to join us.
We thank you for your continue support of our parish ministry. May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family!
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Supper for our Priests
Priests would like to say thank you to those who
have been making meals for them every Thursday. The number of priests are three. They would appreciate your care and generosity. If you are interested, please call Sr. Theresa (253) 592-2541.
Meals could be bought around 3:30-4pm to the St. Ann’s Rectory.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#2003) teaches that sacramental graces are gifts proper to the different sacraments. Any
grace received through a sacrament is called sacramental grace.
The question is how do the sacraments confer grace? Let’s take a
look at the various sacraments. Baptism enables one to begin the
new supernatural life and to carry out baptismal vows. It is an
introduction into the life of Christ so we can be sent out to be
apostles and to do his work in the world. Confirmation enables
one to increase our faith and to defend it. At the same time, the
grace of baptism is deepened and renewed. The Eucharist nourishes the life of the soul and unites it more closely with God
through charity. This grace brings us into a profound union with
Christ’s death, resurrection and glorification. Confession conforms us to Christ through the sacrament of initiation and enables
one to expiate past sins and avoid future falls. Anointing of the
Sick enables us to be united with Christ’s suffering, death and
resurrection. It also prepares the soul for entrance into heaven.
Holy Orders and Matrimony are called “sacraments at the service
of communion” (CCC). This means they build up the community of the Church. Holy Orders enables men who receive Holy
Orders to serve the good order of the Church. They receive a
special grace to act in a unique way and to make Christ visible in
the Church by performing divine worship and administering the
sacraments. Matrimony enables the spouses to remain faithful
and to carry out the duties of the married state. This grace also
gives them the empowerment to show Christ’s love for the world.

TAX STATEMENT FOR THE END
OF THIS YEAR
Prayer of the Faithful ~ February 1, 2015
For women and men who are suffering in the aftermath of an abortion: that they may find healing, consolation and strength through
the sacraments and prayer; we pray to the Lord...Respect LifeTwo
simple ways you can make a difference:
1. Pray -- The U.S. bishops invite the faithful to join a movement of
prayer and sacrifice for the protection of life, marriage, and religious liberty in our country. Learn more, and sign up for weekly
intentions by email, text message, or social media at
www.usccb.org/pray. 2. Stay Informed -- Sign up to receive our
monthly People of Life e-newsletter, which contains the latest news
on pro-life issues, people, events, and the bishops' ongoing efforts
to work toward an increased respect for human life.
In January we will send out year-end statements
of giving to parish families. We are required by
law to mail them no later than January 31. The regional parish
office will make report available for all parishioners. If you have
not received it please call the office at your convenience. We
encourage you to file 2014 taxes as early as possible – might help
avoid a repeat of last year’s tax fraud incidents. Thank you.
Archdiocese of Seattle 2014 Tax Fraud Update:
As tax season is upon us, it is important to be aware of recent developments in the tax fraud investigation. An updated Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQ) document is being prepared and will be sent to you
when it is finalized and posted at our website
(www.seattlearchdiocese.org). To highlight the most important developments: 1. Although we have not identified the specific source of
the breach affecting the Archdiocese, we do know that members of
our community have been the victims of a national tax fraud scheme.
Indeed, approximately 5,900 individuals have informed us that they
have had a fraudulent tax return filed in their name. We have confirmed that approximately 10% of those individuals did not provide
us with a Social Security number in connection with a background
check over the last nine (9) years, suggesting that there are some
individuals whose information may have been compromised elsewhere. The Archdiocese has concluded its investigation, having explored the reasonable leads that we identified in our investigation.
Although we have not found anything in our internal systems to suggest they were compromised, we still are committed to making sure
that the responsible people are held accountable. As such, we continue to work cooperatively with law enforcement, and understand
that they are continuing to investigate this incident as a high priority
matter. This type of crime is a national issue and has been escalating
over the last several years. Recently, 60 Minutes did a story regarding this problem, and you can view that story on their website (http://
www.cbsnews.com/news/irs-scam-identity-tax-refund-fraud-60minutes/).
Dear Brother Priests and Deacons, Pastoral Coordinators,
and Co-workers at the Archdiocesan Offices,
Greetings in the Lord! First and foremost, I would like to
thank all of you for your kind prayers over the past several weeks, at the time of my surgery and ever since. I
have keenly felt them, and god has reminded me again and again of his
love through them.
Having had my post-op meeting with the surgeon this past Monday, I
thought I would give you a brief update on my health. By God’s grace,
the surgery went well, and the surgeon tells me that recuperation is progressing as hoped. I continue to have some pain in the affected areas
(neck, shoulder and right arm), but all of that is to be expected as the
nerves heal, and the doctor indicates that the pain should subside completely within the next three weeks. Needless to say, I’m cautioned to take
care with movements of my head and neck, particularly as the bone grafts
heal.
I’m in good spirits, though several people have written to express their
condolences that my condition has definitively dashed my hopes for the
NRL draft.
Thank you again for your kindness, prayers, and notes of support. And
thanks most of all for your ministry in the Lord’s vineyard.
Sincerely in Christ, Archbishop Sartain.
Presentation of the Lord. Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which
occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of
candles is included in today's liturgy.
If any families would like to have your candles to be blessed, please bring in to church on Sunday February 1st, after
Mass, Father Tuan or Father Laga will bless you candles.
Donna Majeres,
One of our long time parishioners, she became a member of St.
Ann’s Church in 1963 (total 52 years) and joined the Altar
Society. After the new church was built, she helped furnish the
new kitchen which was quite a lot of work at that time. She
considered the church as her home that she was on many
different committees: Funeral Receptions, Wedding Receptions,
Cleaning parish church, parish dinners, Bingo, Bunco, and many charitable functions.
At the office, she volunteered in counting the collection, stuffing bulletins, placing visitor envelopes in the church pews,
volunteering in the office when parish secretary was away on vacation.
Donna, shared her time and talents in many more areas not mentioned. She will be missed.
We thank you Donna for 52 years helping our parish. We deeply appreciate all that you did for the St. Ann Parish. May God
continue to bless you. We wish that you find joy and peace as you will move to a nursing home in Puyallup. You are in our
daily prayers.

Thanks again for you
continued support
to St. John’s
Every weekend there is an article in
our St. John of the Woods page of the
bulletin, which has been written with
all the details you could ever want to
know about the life activities and happenings of our parish community.
We would like to take this time in
writing to say a BIG “THANK YOU”
to Marge Berntsen, who has been writing the Stewardship
Corner article for the bulletin for more year then our secretary has been here. Marge has been a faithful member of St.
John’s and never fails to find something to inform the parishioners about. She must go to every event or parish function because come Monday, bulletin day deadline there will
be an article in the mail box for Susan to type up. Often she
shares articles from some activities of the ministries that she
and her husband Tom participate in. It’s nice to have a person who feel compelled to share parish life with everyone
even for those who may not be able to participate. We appreciate your time, talent and dedication to St. John’s.

ayudaron a organizarlo.

Amen.
