THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE TODAY A Word from Fr. Rocks. . . "I thirst." Words of our Lord Jesus, as recorded in chapter 19 of St. John's Gospel. Mother Teresa heard these words of Jesus in the poor and those in need. Jesus thirsting for our love. I mention this because soon we will begin the House of Charity Bishop's Annual Appeal. This year's theme is We are Called. Called to what? Called to respond to the needs of others, hearing in their need Jesus' words: "I Thirst." The appeal helps in many ways. Some funds go toward helping educate future priests and some toward helping retired priests who have served our diocese. Some funds will go help some of the diocesan services, such as the one headed by Sr. Bonnie McMenamin. Sr. Bonnie works with those with special needs, helping the blind, the deaf and the physically impaired. Sr. Bonnie also works with families who have members with special needs, such a child with autism, helping them to know they too are part of the Church and not alone in their need. The biggest part of the funds goes to help the poor in our area. For example, funds will be distributed to Catholic Charities. The Catholic Charities in Atlantic City helps provide food, emergency utilities and rental assistance, immigration assistance, counseling and job training. All these activities are needed in our local area. With the casinos closing and so many out of work, perhaps you were wondering how can I help? Well this is an opportunity to do so. Our parish goal for this year's appeal is $93,263.55. It would be nice to have 93 people who could each contribute $1000, but that's wishful thinking. However, if all of us contribute what we are able, we can reach this goal. It is important to discern what you are able to give and not to be afraid to do so. Some will be able to give a gift of $350, $500, $1000 or more. Some may be able to give gift of $50, $100 or $200. The point is to give what you are able. Ponder the words of St. Paul to the Church in Corinth concerning the collection to be taken up for the support of the Church elsewhere. "Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work" (2 Cor. 9:6-8). Let us all reap bountifully by being generous with the material blessings God has blessed us, knowing that He will further bless us with all we need in every circumstance. Let us hear the voice of Jesus calling to us, "I thirst," in the needs of others. Let us respond to that thirst with loving generosity. PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS THE SICK OF OUR PARISH AND THOSE WHO ARE IN NURSING HOMES AND IN HOSPITALS. 3-636 Stewardship Reflection Stewardship Prayer “Brothers and sisters: I should like you to be free of anxieties.” 1 Corinthians 7:32 A How much anxiety do we bring upon ourselves by constantly worrying about not having enough or attaining more things? God won’t necessarily give you everything you want, but He will provide His Stewards with everything they need. Try this -use the word “pray” instead of the word “worry” in the future. GOING TO CHURCH DOESN'T MAKE YOU A CHRISTIAN ANY MORE THAN STANDING IN YOUR GARAGE MAKES YOU A CAR. LIVE YOUR FAITH! F irst Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Moses explains to the people that a prophet will come from among them, and that they should listen to this prophet’s words, for God has told him of this prophet. God also tells Moses that anyone who pretends to speak in his words, or speaks in the name of other gods shall die. S econd Reading: I Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul tells the Corinthians how an unmarried man or woman is able to devote themselves fully to God without concern for the needs of a spouse. Paul explains that God wants to help them promote good and devote themselves more fully to God. G ospel: Mark 1:21-28 As Jesus was teaching, a man with an unclean spirit came to the synagogue and asked if Jesus had come to destroy them. Jesus ordered the spirit out of the man, who shrieked violently as the spirit departed. The people were amazed at the authority he had over the spirit. Help Wanted! Join St. Gianna’s Coffee & Donuts Committee! The Committee is presently looking for volunteers willing to help with this joyous activity on the second Sunday of each month for 15 minutes, in the Gathering Area of the church. If you are able to help please call Kathy at 645-3995. I t is heartwarming for the music ministry to hear the congregation sing! Music is an important part of the celebration of the Eucharist. As our community gathers for the celebration of Eucharist, we all join our voices in song to give praise and thanks to God. All parishioners are welcome to join in with all of the hymns and acclamations throughout the Mass. The cantors lead us in song. Their voices enrich our music with harmonies and, at times, solo hymns. Let Us All Unite Our Voices and Celebrate Together! Remember: “The person who sings prays twice.” --Saint Augustine 4-636 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I Stewardship Report O January 24 & 25, 2015 $8,424 n behalf of all the members of our Parish we thank you for continuing to live faithful Stewardship and for using your Sunday envelopes. 10-636 Adams-Perfect Funeral Homes, Inc.
