Reflexión Magnánima de Padre John Robert Skeldon
Hay una especie de geografía espiritual en el evangelio de Marcos que es digno de mencionar. Cuando
Jesús parte hacia otro lugar tiene un enfrentamiento con el maligno. ¿Por qué? Es para que pueda
encadenar la maldad -atarla- para que el dador de vida, metanoia (transformación, conversión) -producto
del poder del evangelio pueda ser liberado, desencadenado, en ese lugar. La maldad está limitada para que
el evangelio pueda tener libertad de trabajar en los seres humanos. Y así, tenemos el primer encuentro de Jesús con el mal (en la forma
de la persona con el espíritu inmundo) al comenzar su ministerio público en Cafarnaúm de Galilea.
Es interesante que este encuentro se produzca en el contexto de la enseñanza de Jesús. Es su enseñanza la que provoca la respuesta del
espíritu inmundo, porque su enseñanza es la de uno con autoridad. Incluso la gente reconocerá la autoridad de la enseñanza de Jesús.
¿Cuál es el poder en su enseñanza? Es la vida misma de Dios. Jesús ha venido a traer la enseñanza que da vida, la Buena Nueva (el
Evangelio) la misma presencia de Dios a los seres humanos. Encadena la maldad y llama a los seres humanos a la conversión, transformación (metanoia). No hay nada más poderoso que eso.
Tú y yo también somos los receptores de esta enseñanza. Esto no es sólo una especie de fascinante historia antigua. Es el poder de
Dios que viene a nuestro encuentro de reunión (sinagoga) también dirigida a nosotros. Jesús quiere encadenar la maldad y el pecado de
nuestras vidas para que el poder del evangelio sea liberado para hacer su fijada realidad, lo que cambia la vida en nosotros.
¿A qué se nos está llamando? A escuchar, a obedecer -esta misma palabra en hebreo (shema), también obaudire en Latín, también hypakouo en Griego- la voz del Señor a través de los profetas (que hablan con la verdad) que vienen en su nombre que nos llaman a la
conversión, como en el primera lectura.
Para no endurecer nuestros corazones como la gente hizo en el desierto a pesar de que habían visto el poder y la fuerza de Dios, como
dice el salmo. Es interesante que la palabra endurecer en la traducción griega del Antiguo Testamento (Septuaginta) es de donde obtenemos nuestra palabra esclerosis, como en la esclerosis en las arterias. Cuando una de las arterias se endurece, la sangre que da vida no
puede ser impulsada a través del cuerpo. Cuando uno endurece el corazón, el dador de la vida, el poder transformador de Dios, no puede latir a través de una persona.
Por último, como San Pablo nos exhorta en la segunda lectura, "para estar libres de ansiedades". Escuchar a Dios, permitiendo que su
poder y su fuerza vibren dentro de nosotros, reducirá en cantidad nuestras ansiedades que la vida diaria nos brinda. El mundo nos dice:
¡Tengan miedo! De hecho, ese es el interés en el mundo de las ventas. Si tenemos miedo –encadenados al miedo,- entonces seremos
fáciles de manipular y nos iremos a comprar todo tipo de cosas buscando todo lo que nos ayude a vernos más jóvenes, tener más, evitar la muerte, etc.
¿Qué es lo contrario de la fe, Bíblicamente hablando? No hay duda. El miedo. El miedo es el gran endurecedor de corazones, el que no
nos permite escuchar verdaderamente, excepto solo a nosotros mismos, y su finalidad es que nos llenemos de ansiedad e irnos a esconder a una esquina, sintiéndonos inservibles.
Recuerdo una vez haber conocido a una dama, que me enseñó algo sobre la confianza y la valentía. A pesar de que no tenía un techo
donde vivir, no festejaba el miedo; no cedió a la desesperación o la autocompasión. Como el gran poeta jesuita Gerard Manley Hopkins escribió una vez: "No, no voy a ser, consuelo de carroña, Desesperanza, no seré un festín para ti..." Y así, ella confiaba en el Señor. En las palabras del Salmo 121, "Levantó los ojos a los montes. ¿De dónde vendrá el auxilio? ", y me dijo. "El auxilio me viene del
Señor, que hizo el cielo y la tierra" Ella no estaba encadenada. Ella no endureció su corazón. Levantó sus ojos a los montes y sabía de
donde venía su auxilio. Escuchó a Jesús que palpitaba en toda ella. Y él la liberó de su falta de techo.
El Beato John Henry Newman escribió una vez un hermoso poema al que le puso música, Divina Luz Ilumíname. Su primera estrofa
es particularmente poderosa:
Divina Luz, con tu esplendor benigno Guarda mi pie.
Densa es la noche y áspero el camino; Mi guía se.
Harto distante de mi hogar estoy; que al dulce hogar de las alturas voy.
Y así, como Jesús hace un movimiento en nuestro paisaje espiritual, dejemos que él encadene todo el mal en nosotros, lo que nos impide totalmente y poderosamente conocer íntimamente al nuestro Señor Dios, para que podamos abrazar el Evangelio con alegría y pueda cambiar nuestros corazones y almas. No hay nada que temer. Como el Beato Charles de Foucauld dijo: "A nuestro lado, cara a cara
con nosotros, dentro de nosotros, tenemos a nuestro Señor Jesús, nuestro Dios, cuyo amor por nosotros es infinito, que es él mismo
todopoderoso, que nos dice que busquemos el reino de Dios y todo se nos dará por añadidura".

Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon
There is sort of a spiritual geography to Mark’s gospel that is worthy of mention. Whenever
Jesus moves into a new physical location he has a confrontation with evil. Why? It is so that
he may bind evil—tie it up—so that the life-giving, metanoia (transformation, conversion)producing power of the gospel may be unleashed, unbound, in that location. Evil is bounded so
that the gospel may be set free to do its work on human beings. And so we have the first
encounter of Jesus with evil (in the form of the person with the unclean spirit) as he begins his
public ministry in Capernaum in Galilee.
It is interesting that this encounter occurs in the context of Jesus teaching. It is his teaching that provokes the response of
the unclean spirit, because his teaching is one with authority. Even the crowd will acknowledge the authority of Jesus’ teaching.
What is the power in his teaching? It is the life of God himself. Jesus has come to bring the life-giving teaching of the Good News
(gospel) of God’s very presence to human beings. It binds evil and calls human beings to conversion, transformation (metanoia).
There is nothing more powerful than that.
You and I are recipients of that teaching as well. This isn’t just some sort of fascinating story from long ago. It is the power of God coming into our gathering, assembly (synagogue) to address us also. Jesus wants to bind the evil and sin in our lives so
that the power of the gospel may be set free to do its reality-altering, life-changing thing in us.
What is called forth from us? To listen to, obey—same word in Hebrew (shema), also obaudire in Latin, also hypakouo in
Greek—the voice of the Lord through those prophets (truth-tellers) who come in his name calling us to conversion, as in the first
reading.
To not harden our hearts as the people did in the desert even though they had seen God’s power and might, as in the psalm.
It’s interesting that the word for harden in the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint) is from where we get our word
sclerosis, like in sclerosis of the arteries. When one’s arteries harden, life-giving blood cannot be pumped through the body. When
one hardens one’s heart, the life-giving, transforming power of God cannot pulsate throughout a person.
Finally, “to be free of anxieties” as St. Paul exhorts in the second reading. Listening to God, allowing his power and might
to pulsate through us will lessen so much of the anxieties that we bring to daily living. The world will tell you: Be afraid! In fact,
that is the selling point of the world. If you’re afraid—bound in fear—then you are easily manipulated and you’ll buy all sorts of
things in the vanishing quest to look younger, have more, stave off death, etc.
What is the opposite of faith, biblically-speaking? It’s not doubt. It’s fear. Fear is the great hardener of hearts, the thing
that will keep us from truly listening, except to ourselves, and the thing that wants to pile up the anxieties so that we will cower in
the corner, bounded by a sense of worthlessness.
I remember meeting a lady once who taught me something about trust and courage. Though she was homeless, she didn’t
feast on fear; she didn’t give in to despair or self-pity. As the great Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote once: “Not, I'll not,
carrion comfort, Despair, not feast on thee…” And so, she trusted in the Lord. In the words of Psalm 121, she raised “her eyes to
the mountains. From where will come my help?” she said. “My help will come from the Lord who made heaven and earth!” She
was not bounded. She did not harden her heart. She raised her eyes to the mountains and knew where her help came from. She listened to Jesus who pulsates throughout her. And he set her free from her homelessness.
Blessed John Henry Newman once wrote a beautiful poem that was set to music, Lead Kindly Light. Its first stanza is particularly powerful:
Lead, kindly Light, amid th’encircling gloom, lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
And so, as Jesus makes a move into our spiritual landscape, let us allow him to bind whatever is evil in us, whatever prevents us from fully and powerfully knowing the Lord God intimately, so that we may embrace the gospel with joy and it may change
our hearts and souls. We have nothing to be afraid of. As Blessed Charles de Foucauld said, “Beside us, face to face with us, within
us, we have our Lord Jesus, our God whose love for us is infinite, who is himself almighty, who has told us to seek for the kingdom
of God and that everything else will be given us.”

These classes started January 29 but you can
easily join in the class. Fr. John Robert is leading
a reading and discussion about this most
substantial papal document that we have seen in
a long time. These classes are on Thursdays at
7 pm and repeat on Fridays at 9:30 am. The Joy of the Gospel. will meet weekly for six weeks. You are encouraged to purchase a copy of the document for yourselves.

sure that someone is in attendance at all times. If

Sacrament of Baptism (newborns - age 6): Parents requesting the Sacrament of Baptism should be either living within parish boundaries or be registered in the parish. Parents and godparents are expected to attend a baptism class for an infant to be baptized. Parents are required to bring a signed photocopy of the child’s state-registered birth certificate to the baptism class. Godparents who are not registered at St. Bartholomew must provide a letter from their parish which verifies that they meet the godparent
requirements. All paperwork must be turned into the office before scheduling your child’s baptism date. The next class will be 7 p.m.
on Thursday, February 12th in the church hall. Call the office to sign up for this class. Parents also need to call the office if you need
to use the nursery while attending this class. For more information, call Art and Cecilia Villa, 817-292-3897. The next English Baptism ceremony will be Saturday, February 7th at 10 a.m. in the church for those who have attended the class.

español se realizan el primer sábado de cada mes a las 11 a.m. La próxima fecha para bautismo en español será sábado, febrero 7,

Sacrament of Confirmation: Students wishing to prepare for this Sacrament must be in 11th grade and are expected to be
in religious education (i.e. YSN, bible study or religion class at school) for one year before registering for Confirmation. Anew class
