Steve January 25, 2015 Page2 Liturgy Corner for January 2015 Food Procession during the Offertory "This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12) Each time we gather together as a community of believers at Mass, we are called to a deeper awareness of what we do during our liturgical celebration. Our Mass is celebrated in two parts, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Our first and second readings, the responsorial psalm, the Gospel and the intentions are all part of the Liturgy of the Word. After the intentions, our Liturgy of the Eucharist begins. The gifts of bread and wine are brought up to the priest. We offer these gifts to God in thanksgiving for all that God has done for us, from the beginning of creation to this very moment. We also offer ourselves as a spiritual sacrifice, knowing that God receives our gifts and appreciates what we offer if it is a sacrifice truly offered from the heart. These simple gifts of bread and wine are to become the real and true presence of the Body and Blood of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. God gives us back nothing less than Jesus in the sacrament of the Eucharist that we receive. Recently, we have been bringing up the gift of a basket of food with the gifts of bread and wine. The gift of the basket of food that we offer for the welfare of the community and the less fortunate in our community and our world are also part of the thanksgiving and sacrifice that we offer. We give of ourselves for the benefit and well being of others. It has long been the custom of the Church to bring these gifts forward for the welfare of all. "It is appropriate for the faithfull’s participation to be expressed by an offering, whether of the bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharis or of other gifts for the relief of the needs of the Church and of the poor." (General Instruction of the Roman Missal #140). So we will continue to bring up the basket of food during every weekend Mass. We will be drawing special attention to the fact that we love our neighbor as ourselves. We are concerned for the welfare of those less fortunate and we show that we want to make a difference in the lives of others while, at the same time, offer praise and thanksgiving to God. If you want to participate in this loving action, tell the usher at Church when you arrive for Mass. As Pope Francis has called on us to end world hunger through prayer and action, may this simple action of processing with this food each week increase our awareness and understanding of what it is to truly give of ourselves in heart, mind, and soul and draw us closer to our loving God. Please help us reach our goal. It helps both our parish and diocese in so many different ways. The STEWARTSHIP COMMITTEE will meet on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd, at 7:00 PM in the SACRISTY. The COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE will Community Life Dear Friends, This weekend we celebrate the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time. The three readings are quite remarkable. This weekend I’d like to focus on the first reading from the Book of Jonah. The first reading from the Book of Jonah is most interesting. It is one of the most significant writings of the Hebrew Scriptures. But because many of us don’t recognize the literary genre, we often miss the theology the author is trying to convey. A scripture scholar writes; “Our sacred authors were certainly inspired to convey their ideas of how God works in our lives, but like all authors, they were free to employ different literary categories to convey those theologies. They opted for songs, poetry, myths, or history. The author of Jonah chose satire.” The commentator on this passage from Jonah continues: “According to Webster, ‘Satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity and vices.’ Were it written in my lifetime, the Book of Jonah probably would have first appeared in MAD magazine or as a Monty Python skit. As with all satire, no one would have taken it literally. Everyone knows people can’t run away from God and that fish don’t swallow people, or thinks that all Assyrians once accepted Yahweh as their God. The theological question doesn’t revolve around the story’s humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule; it’s centered on the stupidity and vices January 25, 2015 present in the ancient Jews for whom this book was originally composed.” “Like many followers of God, our ancestors in the faith fell into the trap of creating mental images of the divine being with whom, they related. They might not have known what Yahweh looked like, but they were fairly sure of God’s behavior patterns. They were convinced their God should and would act in predictable ways. Yahweh’s personality was predetermined, leaving little or no room for change; no differences to discover. This is the vice that the author of Jonah satirically attacked.” “The fictional character of Jonah represents those Jews who have squeezed Yahweh into their mental box, yet are forced constantly to deal with Yahweh’s successful escape attempts. How do you relate to a God who refuses to stay ‘imprisoned in our ideas of God? The confused prophet employs this ‘uncontrollable God’ defense for trying to flee to Tarshish after Yahweh originally sent him to Nineveh. ‘I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, rich in clemency, loath to punish.’ In other words, ‘I was certain that after I proclaimed the destruction of the city, you’d change your mind and I’d be left holding the bag.” That’s exactly what happened! “Nothing is more devastating for a prophet than to have God change the word that the prophet has originally been commanded to deliver.” We can readily identify with Jonah. If we are not followers of God, we can’t depend on God’s word, on what can we depend? Professor of the old Testament, Hans Walter Wolff dealt with this dilemma in just one profound statement: “God doesn’t have to be faithful to God’s word as long as God is faithful to God’s people.” In our dealings with God relationships always trump words. All of us at times have to change our words to others, forced to do so for the sake of maintaining a meaningful, life-giving relationship. Yahweh is no different. If we’re really serious about relating to God, we’re forced to provide God with room to change and evolve Page5 as our relationship changes and evolves. God is not a static force in the universe, always restricted to do the same things in the some ways. Rather we are called to believe in or fall in love with the person of Yahweh, not a predetermined image of Yahweh. May the blessings of the Lord fill the days of this new week! Peace, Fr. The book for February is EAGER TO LOVE: THE ALTERNATIVE WAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI by Richard Rohr. All are very welcome. We meet in the SACRISTY from 3:00 PM until 4:30 PM. YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE: A new year has begun and we are still in conversation about how best to create a Youth Ministry that will serve the needs of our three parishes (Our Lady of Fatima, St. Aloysius, and St. Peter’s Parishes). In a little more than two years there have been two Youth Ministers. Veronica Ticas moved on to a ministry at Sacred Heart High School after St. Ignatius Retreat House was closed and her ministry there was ended. She ministered to our three parishes as part of her ministry at the retreat house. Meaghan came after Veronica and after a year or so she moved to another position other than Youth Ministry which offered her a better salary than our parish could afford. The other factor is that the response on the part of our teens was disappointing. In a time when cost is an important factor in determining where resources are spent we are challenged to invest our resources where they will reat abundant fruit. The question is a complex one. Please keep these questions in your prayer as this New Year begins. Outreach Parish Social Ministry FOOD PANTRY – Thank you to all those who have donated to Our Lady of Fatima Food Pantry. Please remember to check the expiration dates on all your donated items. Toiletries are always welcome! Page6 CaringHands Corner Was Christmas, the birth of our Lord only a few weeks ago? We rush around worrying about what time is it. I have to get to my next class, my next appointment etc. Even our prayers are rushed. We need to remember that everything is all in God’s time. Let me tell you about a young man we have been praying for each week since August. His family calls it …“OUR CHRISTMAS MIRACLE.” Last summer Andrew went to the ocean with his friends. He dove into the waves and was seriously hurt. He was rushed to the hospital and his family was called. The doctors told the family that they weren’t sure Andrew would ever walk again. What happens to us when we hear such news? This family turned to Jesus. They called and asked for prayers for their son. The minute we got the call we reached out our CaringHands Prayer Chain. All the members began to pray immediately and have never stopped. And each month since, Andrew has received the handmade cards from the Fatima Parish Community. Recently the CaringHands Card Ministry received a Christmas card from Andrew and his family. On the cover, there is a photo Andrew, his brother and sister. When you open the card you see the picture inside is Andrew in his home standing using a cane! The photo is breathtaking! In his own handwriting, Andrew wrote words of thanks for our prayers and cards that helped him when he needed it most. He even included a little smiley face at the end. The following words also found inside the card are their prayers and thanks to us. This truly is a Christmas Miracle! “May the strength of God’s love be with you all throughout the next year as your love and friendship has blessed us this year.”
