WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO FOLLOW THE LORD? ONLY A FEW FOLLOWED.
PASTOR’S CORNER
Reflecting Peace
The prayers indicate that peace is a focus of today’s
liturgy. The opening prayers ask that God “show us the
way to peace in the world” and that God’s truth “reflect
peace to those who believe in your love.” The prayer
after communion asks that the Lord “make us one in
peace and love.”
The First Reading is about the call of Samuel. The key
moment is when Samuel learns to open himself up to
God’s message: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is
listening.”

Catholic Schools Week Open House: All Saints School will host an
Open House on Sunday, January 25th from 9:00 a.m.– 1:30 p.m. We
invite our parishioners, friends, and families to visit our school and
meet our teachers to see all that we have to offer our children. This is
also a very good opportunity for families who may be interested in
enrolling their child for the 2015-2016 school year. We look forward
to seeing you on this special day!
Open House for Parents: On Monday, January 26th All Saints will
host an open house for school parents as well as any parent who may
be interested in enrolling their child for the 2015-2016 school year. We
invite you to come and visit your child’s classroom and/or visit any
class to see our teachers and students in action! You may visit the
classrooms from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. All visitors must sign in at the
school office and receive a visitor’s badge. You will then be escorted to
the classroom! We look forward to seeing you!
The Gospel is about another call, the call of the apostles.
Mission Statement: The Mission of All Saints Catholic School is to
Jesus challenges the two disciples with the question:
provide an atmosphere rich in the Catholic Faith where each child is
“What are you looking for?”
What are we looking for in our world today? Are we
looking for peace? If we are looking for peace, are we
listening to what the Lord is telling us about the Spirit of
peace dwelling within us?
Perhaps a radical change must take place within us in
order for there to be peace. The changing of Simon’s
name could be symbolic of the challenge to change
issued by Jesus when he calls us to follow him.
Let the Christian who listens to the word of the living
God, uniting work with prayer, know the place that his
work has not only in earthly progress but also in the
development of the kingdom of God, to which we are all
called through the power of the Holy Spirit and through
the word of the Gospel. Pope John Paul II, Laborem
Exercens (1981) 27

challenged to grow in a safe environment. Through word and example
the students model Christ’s message of love.
Catholic Schools Week: All Catholic schools celebrate National
Catholic Schools Week beginning Sunday, January 26 through Friday
the 30th! This is the 41st anniversary of this annual event which began
in 1974. The theme for this year is “Catholic Schools: Communities of
Faith, Knowledge, and Service.” The theme encompasses several
concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools
are communities-small families in their own right, but also members
of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith,
knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic
school can and should be judged. Catholic Schools Week celebrates
education that goes beyond preparation for a secular life-it is
education that prepares students for a Christian life. CSW also
celebrates the high standards of excellence available to all students in
Catholic elementary and secondary schools In the United States.
Why Catholic Schools? Why should parents make the sacrifice to
send their children to a Catholic school? These are some of the
reasons why Catholic schools are a good choice: We offer an
education that combines Catholic faith and teaching with academic
excellence; we partner with parents in the faith formation of their
children; we set high standards for student achievement and help
them succeed; we provide a balanced academic curriculum that
integrates faith, culture, and life; we use technology effectively to
enhance education; we instill in students the value of service to others;
we teach respect of self and others; we emphasize moral development
and self-discipline; we prepare students to be productive citizens and
future leaders; we have a 99% high school graduation rate
and 85% of our graduates go to college; we cultivate a faculty and
staff of people who are dedicated, caring, and effective; we provide a
safe and welcoming environment for all. These are some of the
reasons why Catholic schools are a good choice for the education of
our children!

WATCHING FOR THE MESSIAH
Today's Gospel story of John and his disciples seeing and following Jesus sounds so simple and casual, it's easy to miss the
significant acts of faith that are made.
John points to Jesus: "Look," he says, "there is the Lamb of God." John's faith in Jesus is evident, so evident that John's disciples
immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus.
The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick to spread the good news of
their discovery: "We have found the Messiah."
It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple
acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish people
was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted,
thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improvement was often noted after anointing, it
was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More
than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable
hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true "last
rite."
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of
illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is
celebrated early enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a
difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them
into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate the sick; the
symbol of touch is a powerful act of acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to
body and soul?

One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity
Together, as one family of God, we continue to build the Kingdom of God here
in South Florida. Because of you and your stewardship through the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), in the past year alone, you are
helping to train the largest group of seminarians the Archdiocese has enjoyed in
many years; through ABCD you are assisting our most needy Catholic elementary and high schools, and you are continuing to support the evangelization efforts within our migrant community in
south Dade. Thanks to your support of ABCD our Respect Life ministry continues to grow, and we continue to minister to the seafarers and at the airports. These are extraordinary accomplishments – all made possible because of you!
If you have not already responded to the letter sent to you by Archbishop Thomas Wenski received by mail, please
take time to consider your pledge for this year. Your faithful and generous participation in the ABCD flows from
God’s many blessings to you and to those you hold dear. We ask for your continued support and invite you to join us
to be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. Thank you.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO OUR PARISHIONERS
The regular use of your Sunday envelopes is very important! Whenever we do not have a record of
contributions and attendance or when they have ceased, we have NO way of knowing whether someone
is still worshiping with our community. Unless we know someone is a practicing Catholic, delays and
hard feelings can result when people want to be married, when they want their child to be baptized,
when they want to be a Godparent or a Confirmation sponsor, when they want to enroll their child in
Religious Education or Sacramental preparation programs, to provide you with a record of your
contributions for tax purposes and to obtain a favorable “support tuition rate” at ANY Catholic school
(support rate is given ONLY to parishioners who contribute a minimum of $800.00 throughout the
calendar year). It is simple to establish and maintain a record of attendance at Mass and parish
support, but filling out a registration form alone does NOT accomplish this, USING YOUR
NUMBERED ENVELOPES ON SUNDAY does (or including your parishioner number on whatever
envelope you use). Please stop by the office during office hours so we can get you ready for Sunday
worship. If you are registered and are NOT receiving your pre-printed envelopes, please contact us at
the Parish Office. If you are registered but have not used your Parish envelopes in the past two years,
your information will be inactivated and you will no longer receive pre-printed envelopes. Thank you!
sobres impresos. Gracias!
