ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL APPROACHES
The theme of the Annual Catholic Appeal is Entrusted with Responsibility. God
provides each of us with many gifts. We have a responsibility not only to recognize
these gifts but also to nurture them.
As we contemplate his gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for
these gifts. Your financial support for the work of the parish, our Archdiocese and
the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please
give generously to the 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have received the
mailing from Archbishop Cupich, please respond as generously as you are able

BUILDING ON 100 YEARS OF CARING AND SHARING
“For What Are You Searching?”
As we read the story today of the two disciples following Jesus, we hear a rather significant question directed to them
by Jesus. “Who and what are you looking for?” In reply the disciples ask, “Where do you stay?” Jesus answers,
“Come and you will see.” This was quite a surprise response for the disciples. God has different ways of entering
people’s lives and, no doubt, each of us could name a few such instances.
On any journey or direction in life, it is important to ask what we are seeking and what it is that we desire to
find. The direction in which life takes us needs to be rooted in our search for a genuine relationship with Jesus. In
order than this can happen, we need to have a sense of purpose in life that will help us stay on the right track.
It’s important to realize that we are not “lone rangers” on this journey. Others—family, friends, this faith
community to which we belong, the persons living in our neighborhood—all are companions on our way to God.
I think Jesus had this in mind when he invited John’s disciples to join him. They became part of the community of
apostles who followed Jesus as he continued fulfilling his ministry here on earth.
We may ask, what might this journey of the first disciples have looked like as they left home and followed
Jesus? In comparison to our time, they left little behind regarding material possessions. But also they left family and
friends behind and that was a great sacrifice. Whatever it was from which the first disciples moved away, Jesus’
invitation to follow his call had a generous and willing response from them.
The beginning of a new year is a good time to ask the question: What does my journey toward God look like?
Can it change a bit, be different? Jesus offers us a direction as we seek to move on our way toward God. Jesus is the
way, the truth and the life. His teachings are clear. We can draw on his wisdom and determine whether we are
looking for him or whether we are gratifying false desires that lead us in the opposite direction. We may want to
have more than someone else possesses, buy something bigger or better, rather than creating a balance in our lives.
At the start of a new year, it might be well to consider who the persons are to whom we say a kind word or
give assistance when a particular need arises. Jesus, in that person may be asking us, “Who or what are you looking
for?” Maybe the goal to have a home that is exceedingly large doesn’t allow us to connect with others because there is
so much space we can’t find one another. Being in touch with people is crucial on our journey to God. It is a way of
strengthening our relationship with God who is present in our family members, in our neighbors and
co-workers, evening in the person at the checkout counter when we go shopping.
Since we are beginning this New Year of 2015, I invite you to spend a few minutes this week allowing Jesus
to speak to you. He may say, “What are you looking for?” Let your answer come from the depths of your heart with
all honesty and sincerity. Allow Jesus’ wisdom to direct you on the journey of this new year.

TAKE PART IN CCHD DURING POVERTY AWARENESS MONTH
What can our impoverished brothers and sisters in Christ teach us? Pope Francis tells us, “When we are generous in
welcoming people and sharing something with them—some food, a place in our homes, our time—not only do we no
longer remain poor: we are enriched.” Further he explains that, “true riches consist not in material things, but in the
heart!”
In remembering that true riches lie in our hearts, we can reflect on how we can help those living on the margins.
At the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) we fund organizations that enrich our community by
working for affordable housing, decent education and more in order to construct a just Chicago.
Are you enriched? You can help empower low-income persons during Poverty Awareness Month by taking
part in the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). To learn more about CCHD, meet the grantees, hear
their stories, participate in the CCHD Youth Art Contest and more, visit chicagopeaceandjustice.org/poverty.
LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR...
Do you know your neighbors? How are they faring in the cold weather? If you know of someone elderly, or someone
who lives alone, check on them... because it’s the neighborly—and Gospel— thing to do. It’s great to stand across a
fencepost and chat when it’s warm but colder weather forces more people indoors.
Maybe the senior citizen next door needs milk or bread. Maybe the widower across the alley needs
someone to mail his bills so he’s on time. It only takes a minute but can mean so much. Do you see newspapers piling up
at the front door? Ring the doorbell to check on the individual.
Many of us take for granted that someone else in the house will help if we are injured or suddenly incapacitated.
If someone lives alone and slips on the stairs, who will help? Be a good neighbor: ring a doorbell, make a phone call,
reach out to help.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS
Human trafficking is a $150-billion industry.
Conservative estimates of the number of people trafficked
into forced labor and prostitution affect 21 million people
— primarily women and children—annually. The essence
of human trafficking is in its force, fraud and/or coercion
of vulnerability and desperation of the poor, refugees and
migrants, women and children.
Trafficking is one of the most horrific results of
economic and social disparities that increase the
vulnerability of millions of people. Such inequality allows
many within our societies to be considered mere
disposable commodity.
Talk with family, friends and others about human
trafficking. Encourage one another to learn more. Pray
for everyone who is trapped in a situation of slavery, that
God will help to liberate them from their chains. Pray for
perpetrators of slavery, that they repent of their evil ways
and turn to God for forgiveness. For more information go

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT dePAUL REFLECTS:

dePaul as an active member or as an associate who
assists with specific projects. High school students are

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of
Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the
sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was
the right time for the sacrament. Although physical
improvement was often noted after anointing, it was seen
as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a
prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even
healing.
More than four hundred years later, many people still
do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the
person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be
aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may
even be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.”
We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem
reluctant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who
are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to
those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for
those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early
enough, optimally when the sick person is still at Sunday
Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a
difficult road ahead.
When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they
belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring
them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and
give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and
alienate the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of
acceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire
before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul?

nuestro camino a Dios.
hogar y seguían a Jesús?
