There is a common perspective that Jesus does not have time for ordinary people in their small ordinary lives or problems. However, the Ordinary season is speaking to us directly as the normal people in the Church. We rarely hear God speak to us from the clouds or upon a mountaintop, but rather we are like Eli who hears the Father in his sleep or moments of meditation and calm. Ordinary time is for us little people who hear the small whisper of God in our ear and we respond, “Speak [Lord], for you servant is listening.” It is the little people who listen, act, and become great in the kingdom of God. In the Gospel we see the steps needed to be true followers of Jesus and how we are to respond. First the disciples listen and are directed by John the Baptist’s teaching, “behold the Lamb of God.” As Catholics, we are directed each week through the scriptures proclaimed to us at mass, the homilies which insight us to think and contemplate about God’s plan for the community, and our own personal prayer opening us to the quiet Father’s whisper. After being directed, the disciples take the second step inquiring and going to the place where Jesus resides. They go with Jesus in order to spend time with Him, to live with Him, and essentially develop a relationship with Him. This translates to us that we are to be present at the place where Jesus resides such as: the church where the tabernacle contains the presence of God, mass where His body and blood is manifested to us, retreats were we carve out special time with which to converse with the divine, or even a special place and time where we devote ourselves to prayer in our homes. We are to accept the faith and incorporate it into our ordinary daily life. And finally the disciples leave Jesus to tell their brothers and friends about their discovery, the Messiah. It is at that moment when they begin to spread the good news that their discipleship commences. We the faithful are not to hold and hide our relationship with God; rather, we are to give and direct that amazing grace to those who we love. God’s grace of love is always on the move, so if one attempts to capture or save it, the gift is lost; it must be given and shared so as to bear fruit. During this brief season of Ordinary Time, listen to the Father’s call to conversion; explore the possibilities of a quality relationship with Jesus and His presence in daily life; and be filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit engaging the world sharing the good news of salvation. Prayer Quilt Ministry Holy Family Rosary Prayer Group We meet at 7 pm on Tuesdays in the church chapel. On the first Tuesday of the month we meet promptly at 6:30 in order to attend and support Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome. We’re often asked by friends and acquaintances for “prayers for my intention”, and we do say a prayer for those in need. Besides just saying the prayer, a tangible remembrance to give that friend is a Prayer Quilt. A Prayer Quilt is made with three layers of fabric held together with strings to be tied and a prayer to be tied with each knot. The Prayer Quilt Ministry meets the first and third Monday of each month in our new workshop in the old rectory building. We’d like to have you join us - if you sew, wonderful, but we can use all kinds of abilities for other tasks. We would love to have one or two people interested in receiving the prayer requests and making sure that the quilts are delivered to the recipient. For more information please call Margaret Peters at 619 420-1986. 6 St. Rose of Lima Church Seniors For the Fun of It! Join us Wed., Jan. 21 to start the year making new friends or greeting old ones.
