BEN SPIRITUALITY OF THE ORDINARY TIME OF THE YEAR INTRODUCTION As we gracefully begin the Ordinary Time of the year after the Church’s joyful celebration of Christmas, it is important to outline some features of this important season of the Church’s liturgical life. What do we mean when the Church designates a certain season of her life and mission as ordinary? What are the different components of this apparently quite season of the Church? What lessons underline the Church’s spiritual life during the Ordinary Time of the Year? These and other questions inform my reflection as we continue to follow our Lord Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem in this Year of Consecrated Life/Vocation. THE MEANING OF THE TERM “ORDINARY” In popular usage the word “ordinary” is used to describe things that are uninteresting or dull, but ordinary could also refer to things that are customary, regular, and orderly. Ordinary Time may also be called Ordinal Time, which means numbered time. Ordinal comes from the Latin “ordinalis,” which is a word meaning “showing order, denoting an order of succession.” Hence, Ordinary Time is the standard, orderly, counted time outside of the other liturgical seasons. There is nothing “dull” about Ordinary Time rather everything is appreciated as the events of each moment are seen as opportunities to cherish the blessings of God. Ordinary time is the longest liturgical season in the Catholic Church, encompassing either 34 weeks each year. Because other liturgical seasons begin or end with movable feasts, the length of Ordinary time can vary slightly; however, 34 weeks is the more common length. The weeks are numbered, e.g., the first Sunday of Ordinary Time, the second Sunday of Ordinary Time, and so on. Ordinary time is technically one liturgical season, though it is divided into two periods. The two time periods were merely referred to as “the Season after the Baptism of the Lord” and “the Season after Pentecost.” The liturgical color of Ordinary Time is green; however, other appropriate colors are worn on particular feast days. Green is a sign of life that comes not only as a gift from God but also as blessing that we appropriate through the rich vegetations that promotes life and well being. THE SPIRITUALITY OF THE ORDINARY TIME The spiritual ingredient of this period is drawn from the testimony that Peter gave in Acts 10: 38 that “the Spirit of the Lord was upon Jesus and He went about doing good.” We begin the ordinary time immediately after the baptism of Jesus; an event that inaugurates Jesus’ public life. So Catholics are led by the Spirit to contemplate the presence and the love of God in the ordinary, simple, and humble events of life and human activities. It is a moment to realize that our God is close to His people as made manifest in the stories of the different biblical characters that we encounter in our Sacred Liturgy. In this period, the spiritual logic and drama is seen in this phrase “Slow and steady wins the race.” (No prisa, no pausa). It is characteristic of a pilgrim Church and a pilgrim people to walk on the footsteps of our Divine Master. It is a season to be Pro-life in a consistent ethic that promotes the life of the human person from birth to natural death. The Church maintains that the relationship between an unborn child and the mother should never be an antagonistic one. Mother Teresa stated: “The so called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has sown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts-a child-as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience.” As we celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Roe Vs Wade this weekend, we need to stand up for human life in the different spaces of our civil life. We ought to promote those essential life-promoting values that we encounter in both the sacred Scripture and in traditional cultures. Have a blessed Week!!! Rev. (No prisa, no pausa). Padre Benedict Nwachukwu-Udaku Page 4 Teachings of Catholic Culture and Faith A TEACHING MOMENT HISTORY OF STO. NINO FEAST/SINULOG CAPTION This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Sto. Nino, the yearly observance that is so dear to the hearts of all Filipino Catholics. The Sto. Nino is a representation of the “Child Jesus”, similar to the Infant Jesus of Prague or Nino Jesus. The image was brought to the archipelago that would later be known as the Philippines, on Ferdinand Magellan’s nearcircumnavigation, and in 1521, was given to the Queen Juana of Cebu, who was later baptized into the Catholic faith with her husband, Rajah Jumabon and their people. This feast brings us back to the beginning of the Christianization of our country. It also enables us to see the relevance of this devotion to our lives today. In a special manner, it forces us to focus on our children and youth, with all the dangers that threaten them, the problems they pose, and the hopes they bring. This feast, especially the Eucharistic celebration we are about to start, are fresh opportunities for us to entrust our “ninos and ninas”, and the youth, to the protection and guidance of the Holy Child, and to love them as Jesus does. He who is so much a part of our history and our lives, will surely take care of our children and young people, and will teach us how to do it likewise. Earlier, you saw the SINULOG, meaning ‘graceful dance”, which is done by taking a forward-backward step accompanied by drumbeats. It is said to resemble the water current movement of the river, in which pagans who lived in the Philippines in the 15th century, believed to be an expression of prayer, in thanksgiving, petition, or intercession. This was practiced until Christianity was brought to them. To this day, the sinulog is still a part of the yearly celebration to commemorate the transition from paganism to Catholicism. In the procession later, after the Mass, we will all have the opportunity to take part in the Sinulog as well. It is also important to note that Pope Francis will be presiding at Mass in Manila at Luneta Park very close to the time of our celebration here at Sacred Heart, and so, our liturgical celebration will be very similar to what the Filipinos there will be experiencing,...bringing their own STO. NINO images from home, dancing the Sinulog with the Pope, prayerfully observing the theme of MERCY AND COMPASSION, unveiling the Year of the Poor(in the Philippines), and Year of the Consecrated Life (global), and reciting the Creed in Tagalog. VIVA STO. NINO! ¡VIVA STO. Ed’s 80th Birthday. Our ministries held a potluck with many delicious ethnic dishes. Of course our celebration was a western theme and the afternoon was filled with dancing and singing. We thank our ministries for organizing this fun and wonderful celebration. The day concluded with prayer and thanksgiving to our loving and generous God for sharing the gift of Fr. Ed to our community. May God grant Fr Ed many more years of good health, loving service to our community and others, and much joy and peace in his life.
