FLU SEASON REGULATIONS TO MINIMIZE INFECTION
The California Department of Public Health recently reported
that the flu has reached epidemic levels. As a precautionary
measure, Bishop Myron Cotta has asked pastors to make the
following temporary changes in order to minimize the spread of
infection. These measures are intended to insure everyone’s
health and well-being.
 Discontinue the administration of Holy Communion in the
cup.
 Encourage reception of the Body of Christ in the hand
(although receiving on the tongue is allowed)
 At the Sign of Peace, please share the peace with those around
you with a nod, saying “peace be with you.” Avoid shaking
hands.
 At the Our Father, please refrain from holding hands.
 Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are reminded to
cleanse their hands with
an alcohol-based antiseptic before and after Holy Communion.
 Those who take Holy Communion to the sick and home-bound
should take the same
precautions.
The obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and other Holy Days
does not apply to those who are sick. If you are sick, please stay
home and take of yourself. Thank you for your patience and
understanding during this time. Please pray for those who are
sick. The administration of Holy Communion in both kinds will

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Message of Life
1 SM 3:3-10,19. 1 COR 6:13-15,17-20 • JN 1:35-42
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of
the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have
from God, and that you are not your own?” St. Paul
I
f we cannot protect human life in its simplest form, we
cannot protect it in any form.
How do we react when someone says something we cannot
agree with? We can be polite, we can be dismissive, and we can
also be very ugly when someone dares to say something with
which we do not agree. We hear all kinds of ranting, name
calling, intentional misrepresentation when various people talk
about the government, politicians, and laws or institutions they do
not like. It is no different with how
we listen to and treat the Church.
We are quickly dismissive of
teachings we do not like, even
when we really do not understand
what the teachings are.
We even dismiss the Word of God
when it does not support our
personal views, decisions, or
lifestyle. It is amazing how many
ways we thwart it. God’s Word
has always involved an unbroken
chain of human beings, one person
calling ano ther to faith,
challenging another’s sinfulness,
passing on the mantle of prophesy.
Like it or not, we are part of that
unbroken chain. We are at one
moment the hearers of God’s Word
and the next we are called to be
speakers of the Word; but we are
not always willing to speak God’s
Word, especially when we think
we will be vilified for it.
WHAT ARE YOU
Sometimes God’s Word is something we do not want to hear, and
many do not want to hear the message of life. The Scriptures are
very clear. God is the author of life. In fact, life began because God
breathed the Spirit of Life into us. How can we be so dismissive of
this faith and belief? We should hear Paul. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is a reminder that God’s Word is what it is. The human
person is entwined with the life of God regardless of what kind of
life it is or how it began. Is God’s Word easy? No.
Corinth was a port city and had a reputation of being a rather loose
city, especially in its sexual practices. The fledgling Christian
community of Corinth was part of the culture and partook of all the
practices that the popular culture excused. They, along with many
other portside inhabitants, also adopted sexual license. Paul dared
to question their behavior, something they did not like any more
than do we when someone challenges our behavior. Paul’s
admonition to the Corinthians is the same for us: we are to rise
above our culture. We are to make it better by our words and our
example. Anyone who is a parent knows how hard it is to teach
this, as the constant refrain in a house with children is, “But
everyone else is!” Parents have to stand tough for the sake of their
children’s future; we have to stand tough for the sake of our
salvation.
Like watching people in the mall, John the Baptist pointed Jesus
out to Andrew and his companion. The Gospel doesn’t really say
the statement was directed to the
men. It could easily have been a
remark made by John to no one in
particular, yet it reveals what he
thought of Jesus. The two disciples
clearly heard the statement, and,
curiosity aroused, they followed
Jesus. What we must not fail to
notice is that Jesus did not wait for
them to catch up. Instead, He
stopped and turned to them and
initiated a relationship, “What are
you looking for?”
This question should remain with us
through the rest of our year: “What
are you looking for?” Indeed, what
are we looking for? Why have we
come here? The initial response of
Andrew and the other disciple of
John the Baptist was, on one level, a
superficial response made by
someone who doesn’t quite know
LOOKING FOR
what to say: “Where are you
staying?” On another level, it is a question with great depth:
“Where can we find you, Jesus?” Two men went to see where Jesus
lived, but they were not really looking for a house. They were
searching for the core of Jesus, where His heart resided. One listened
and followed Jesus. One went home.

This Thursday, January 22, is a Day of Prayer and Penance for Life. It
is a good time for us to ponder life, its meaning, and its need for
protection. It is a good time to review our faith based on the Word
of God and how it guides—or doesn’t guide—our positions on
issues affecting human life. Some will listen and follow. Others
will not.
