Desk
The Christmas season came
and left us and the New
Year has ushered in. Yet we
are grateful to the great
many who selflessly gave of
themselves to help this beloved parish of ours.
With the exemplary
servant leadership of Marilyn Wilson, Joe Tipane
(whose family sponsored our outdoor Christmas
Tree) and Suzanne Stanton, these other members
of the parish stepped forward and also exemplified
the spirit of giving that Christmas was very much
about: Nola Burger, Kelvin Burger, Dick Purcell,
Konnie Amick (yes, she came and helped too),
Maria and Richard Guerrero, Roark Galloway and
his sons Jason and Sean, Carl Reese, Michael
Brouillette and Billy Prejula. We express our
thanks to them for helping decorate the church-mostly within but also outside.
For the recent Advent Penance service, we
thank Sheila Jolly, Bernadette Strachan and Lynn
Morgan for giving a
delicious dinner for the priests who came to hear
our confessions.
We are most grateful also to Steven Holc
for the printing of worship aids for several of our
recently held liturgical activities, Debbie McGriff for
organizing the Parish Christmas potluck following
the blessing of the outdoor Christmas Tree, Annie
MacDonald and several Fil-Am parishioners for the
Simbang Gabi Mass and reception afterwards,
Deacon Andres Escobedo and many other Hispanic
leaders and members of our parish for the great
celebrations of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
All the liturgical ministers—you know who
you all are—who served at all our Christmas and
New Year Masses and rites, your fellow parishioners and pastor are sincere in their gratitude for
your involvement in the life of our community.
As the New Year continues, let our discipleship never wane nor our ways of being good
stewards! God sees the good we do—always! We
do not do well because we are seen but rather
because doing what is good and right is our way
of loving in return the God who loved us first!

Typhoon Hagupit Disaster Relief
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is accepting donations to provide assistance in support of disaster relief efforts after the devastating typhoon which hit the Philippines on December

Beginning Wednesday, January 21, the Diocesan Institute will be offering the following eight
week class at Immaculate Heart.
“Mary, Mother of God and of the Church”
The class will be every Wednesday evening
(except Ash Wednesday) through March 4 from
6:30 until 9:15 PM in the Mother’s Room. The
class will be taught by Chris O’Donnell. Cost is
$35 for credit or $30 to audit. The cost of the
book is approximately $13.50. Sign-ups will be
before class on January 21.

Capacitándonos
Los cordones de los zapatos estaban enlodados después de una tarde jugando en el parque y brincaban en el aire
mientras la niña corría hacia su padre. "Papi, ¿me puedes amarrar los cordones?" gritaba ella. El padre sonriente dice,
"Por supuesto".
¿Qué padre es "capaz" de amarrar los zapatos de su hija o hijo - y de ayudar en otras tareas y lecciones que son
parte del llamado cristiano a ser padre o madre? ¿Cuántos padres y madres sienten que tienen que gritar al igual que
lo hizo Juan Bautista antes del bautismo de Jesús? Hablando de Jesús, Juan dijo, "Me sentiría muy honrado si se me
permitiera arrodillarme para desatar la correa de su calzado" (Marcos 1:7).
Gracias Especiales
Mediante la gracia del sacramento del matrimonio los padres reciben el honor de no sólo enseñar a sus hijos cómo
desenvolverse en el mundo de cada día (como atar los cordones de su calzado) sino también en los misterio de la fe
que ellos son los primeros en proclamar a sus hijos. Los padres tienen la misión de enseñar a sus hijos sobre la fe y
de ayudarlos a descubrir su vocación como hijos de Dios. Dios Padre tenía planes especiales para su Hijo. Durante su
bautismo, Jesús fue ungido por su Padre para llevar la salvación a todo el mundo.
De igual manera los padres, abuelos y todos nosotros en la comunidad de fe tenemos planes especiales y sueños para
nuestros hijos. Tenemos la esperanza de que van a ir a la universidad, prepararse para una carrera y trabajar en algo
que les gusta. Tenemos la esperanza de que se casen y tengan hijos. Pero sobre, todos deseamos que nuestros hijos
continúen practicando nuestra fe católica y profundizando su relación con Dios. Por tanto, como familia en la fe,
debemos animar a algunos de nuestros hijos a que dediquen su vida a Dios en el sacerdocio o la vida religiosa. Con la
gracia de Dios estamos capacitados para hacer eso.
Vivamos la Palabra de Dios
En tu bautismo el Espíritu Santo descendió
sobre ti en presencia de la comunidad cristiana, te reclamó en nombre de Jesús y Dios
dijo: “Tú eres mi hijo amado (hija amada)”.
Pasa un tiempo orando y reflexionando sobre estas palabras. ¿Qué le respondes a
Dios? ¿Cómo afectan esas palabras y tu respuesta lo que haces en la vida?

Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios
Éste es uno de los momentos clave en la vida de Jesús. En su propia ciudad de Nazaret, ubicada al norte, él debió haber oído hablar de Juan. En algún momento debió haber escuchado una voz interior que le decía: “Dirígete hacia el
sur, ve al desierto. Ve a escuchar a este predicador Juan”.
Cuando llegó al desierto es probable que haya estado esperando en una larga fila antes de que llegara el momento de
entrar en el agua y que Juan lo bautizara. Marcos nos hace sólo un recuento brevísimo de tal encuentro, pero nos describe a Juan como esperando a alguien más poderoso que él, que bautizará con el Espíritu Santo.
Es este mismo Espíritu Santo que descendió sobre Jesús en cuanto salió del agua. En ese momento se abrieron los
cielos, el cielo bajó a tocar al galileo y el Espíritu bajó sobre él como una paloma. ¿Has visto alguna vez una gaviota
descender para arrebatar un pez o a un halcón precipitarse de picada para agarrar su presa? En contraste, una paloma que desciende es una imagen de belleza y gracia, y de posarse suavemente.
Las palabras de hoy no anuncian a Cristo a los demás, como sucede en la versión de Mateo, sino que se enuncian sólo
para Jesús: “Tú eres mi Hijo amado, en ti me complazco” (1:11), haciendo eco de las palabras que el Señor dice en el
primer cántico del Siervo en el libro de Isaías.
El descenso de la paloma no quiso significar una vida fácil para Jesús, sino más bien que Dios había penetrado el ser
de Jesús de tal manera que lo llevaría hasta el desierto para comenzar su misión de confrontar los poderes del pecado
y de la muerte. Esta gentil paloma vino —y continúa viniendo— con intenso poder.

Las Aguas Bautismales
Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse constantemente. Los
jardineros dicen que esto "teje" el césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede
cuando se injerta una rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe
estar húmedo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene unidas a las
células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón las religiones de todas las épocas y
culturas han usado tanto este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el
Jordán para ser bautizado, se "teje" a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al
sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había
cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista,
Cristo se tejió a la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino
de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en las aguas
del vientre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del
arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra frágil y pecaminosa
humanidad. Por las aguas del Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos
miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida
eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y recibimos la
promesa de la gracia. Para nosotros, como para Jesús, las aguas
bautismales también inauguran nuestra misión de proclamar la Buena
