TheAdventseasoniscelebratedwithaspiritofreconciliation,hope,faithrenewal,andanticipation.Thisisactually a season of prayerful watch as we get ourselves
readytowelcomeChrist,the“New-bornKing”inourlives.
“Bealwaysonthewatch,andpraythatyoumaybeable
toescapeallthatisabouttohappen,andthatyoumaybe
abletostandbeforetheSonofMan."(Luke21:36)
Theetymologyoftheword,“Advent”,comesfromthe
Latin “adventus” that means "coming" and refers to the
comingofChrist.TheseasonofAdventextendsoverfour
Sundays,beginningwiththeSundaynearesttothefeastof
St. Andrew the Apostle (Nov. 30). But, the irst Sunday
maybeasearlyasNov.27.
Theseasonultimatelyinvitesustothecelebration
ofChrist'sbirthatChristmas;butmostimportantly,
toactivelyandconsciouslyparticipateinthegraceand
celebration of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist;
and to get ourselves ready for the coming of our
Lordattheendoftime,the“parousia”.
“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the
mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be
raisedabovethehills;andallthenationsshall lowto
it,andmanypeoplesshallcome,andsay:‘Come,letus
gouptothemountainoftheLORD,tothehouseofthe
GodofJacob;thathemayteachushiswaysandthat
wemaywalkinhispaths.’”(Isaiah6:6-3b)
Wedonothavedatatodetermineexactlywhen
thecelebrationofAdvent irststartedintheChurch.
But,oneoftheearliestdocumentsshowingthat
ChristmaswascelebratedonDec.25wasfoundinAntiocharoundthemiddleofthesecondcentury.ThepersecutionofChristianswasstillgoingonthen.Thecelebration of Christmas became of icial in the Church in
thefourthcenturywhentheRomanEmperorConstantineconvertedtoChristianity,andmadeanof icialdeclaration for the celebration of Christmas. It was in the
CouncilofToursin567,thattheperiodofAdventwas
pronouncedatimeoffastingbeforeChristmas.
During this Advent, I invite you to re lect on the
meaning of life as God's chosen people and recall on
howthepropheciesandpromisesoftheOldTestament
andtheprophetswereful illedinChristJesus.Thisisa
timeforawarenessofthegoodnessandmerciesofGod
inourworldtoday.DoyouknowthatAdventseemsto
getlostinourtoday’sculture?Wesooftenthinkofthe
month of December as the “Christmas season” and
spendalotofenergyandvitalitydecoratingourhomes,
trees and streets, but often neglect to prepare our
heartsforthecomingofChrist.
Myhopeisthatwecangetridoftheoldyeast,gird
our loins and light our lamps like faithful servants, so
that in a sense we do not lose the feeling of Advent.
