I believe in one God, the

The Catholic Adult Singles Association of Marin is a group of 50+ single
or single again Catholics who are interested in making new friends, taking
part in social activities, sharing opportunities for spiritual growth and becoming involved in volunteer projects
that will benefit our parishes, our
community, and one another. We
welcome those who are interested.
For Membership & Event information, please call Bob at 415 8970639. Please Come To A Planning
Meeting. In our effort to offer interesting and enjoyable events for the
members of the Catholic Adult Singles Association, we need your ideas
and support. Share your ideas with
us, and maybe suggest and support an
event. It’s really easy. And, if you’re
unable to attend a meeting, but have
an idea or would like to suggest an
event, just call Bob McLaughlin (415
897-0639) with your information.
Make a point to come in your birthday month, and we will all help you
celebrate and get to know everybody.

SRS Students as SVdP Ambassadors
St. Raphael School Eighth Grade were
commissioned as St. Vincent de Paul
Ambassadors to St. Raphael School at
the school mass on the Feast of St.
Raphael and the Archangels. All
twenty 8th graders daily collect food
from the parish campus and during
their recess they carry it to the SVDP
Pantry in the Rectory. They then
bring up filled bags for distribution by

One of the sure signs for me that the
seasons are changing and that we are
heading into winter is the celebration
of Halloween. Many children and
many who are young at heart wait all
year for Halloween. Next weekend,
as you are celebrating Halloween, I
thought you might be interested to
know the origins of the symbols and
how the practices of Halloween began.
Halloween has its origin in pre
Christian times and no direct
connection between this day and any
Christian tradition has been found.
Halloween takes its name (All Hallow
e’en) from being the eve of All Saints
Day (All Hallows Eve). The origins of
the day came from the Celts in Wales,
Ireland and Scotland who celebrated
the New Year on November 1st.
Among the Celts, under the influence
of the religious leadership of the
Druids, a festival was held the evening
before to honor Samhain, their lord of
death. The festival ended the harvest
time and ushered in the winter season,
the season of cold, darkness and decay
of nature. The Celts believed that
Samhain allowed the souls of the dead
to return to their earthly homes during
this night. Fire played a very
important role in this festival. On this
night people would extinguish their
hearth fires and the Druids build large
sacred bonfires often on hilltops.
From these bonfires people would relight a New Year’s fire for their homes.
It was hoped that these new fires
would bring back the sun and ward off
evil spirits.

Halloween customs were not popular
in the United States until the migration

In an article on “successful
aging” (New Theology Review,
November, 2010), Dr. Lawrence M.
Lenoir proposes that the art of giving
and receiving love is at the heart of
growing old gracefully. Research
shows that being in a loving
relationship quiets the demons of
depression and despair. So, if you
want to be healthy, be loving. Jesus
would agree.
The rabbis of Jesus’ day argued about
which was the greatest commandment
of the six hundred thirteen in the
Torah. When the Pharisees asked
Jesus, he answered that what God
wanted most from the chosen people
who had been liberated from slavery
and called to live in a covenantal
relationship was a return of the love
God showed to them. This love has
two faces: loving God totally and
loving one another as one loves
oneself.
Loving is a contagious activity. If you
are loved, you tend to be loving. Paul
is sounding this note when he writes to
the Thessalonians about how they
became imitators of him and his fellow
evangelizers Timothy and Silvanus,
and of the Lord himself, receiving the
word and living in faith, joy, and love
for each other, because they believed
in God’s love for them, revealed in
Christ.
Our love must flow outward in
compassionate generosity. The Lord
called on Israel to show its love by not
oppressing aliens, not wronging weak
orphans and defenseless widows, and
not extorting the poor by demanding
interest on loans. No less is asked of
those who have received the Holy
Spirit and live in community with the
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That’s
us. Love one another.

han recibido el Espíritu Santo y viven

This is a wonderful way to remember

will be placed on the Church Altar as
