Dear Families,
As second semester is just around the corner, we are reminded of the work that we do each day in
service of ensuring that we offer college preparatory, rigorously academic, high interest programming to your scholar. During the first semester, we took time to ensure that we were not only meeting the needs of your scholars but also offering them an opportunity to explore their interests.
Armed with greater specifics around student cognitive abilities, we are now able to create individualized programming aimed at pushing the academic envelope even farther and fostering your child's
abilities even more. We are pleased to expand our honors classes as well as provide targeted intervention to meet student needs. Please note, our February Parent meeting will focus on the academic changes that are applicable for your scholar based on the Interim data assessments. More specifically, we will detail the school's response to your child's identified areas of need. Each family will
have the opportunity to schedule an academic planning meeting over the latter course of the year
where we discuss your child's programming individually. While our teachers are the driving forces
behind the academic classes, members of the administrative team and student support team will
work with you to ensure that we are creating the right academic course sequence for your child. The
most immediate way to set up your academic planning meeting is to attend one of the Parent meetings on February 2 and choose an appointment time. We are certain that between the individualized
course sequencing, launch of independent study opportunities, career and development and occupational studies courses and the adoption of a positive behavior intervention program, we will continue
to meet your scholar's needs and prepare him or her for success beyond the senior year.
As always, we thank you for your partnership and trust in us to educate your scholar. Enclosed in
this bulletin, you will find your child's math and English Language Arts interim testing scores as well
as your specific login for our Positive Behavior Intervention System (Hero). Again, anticipate that we
will discuss these items at the upcoming Parent Association meetings. Note, the information is simply for your review. You do not need to send back a signed copy.

A Message from the Assistant Principal of Instruction
Dear Parents,
As we prepare to launch the Spring semester, it is an opportune time for us to remind our students about our
expectations. We expect our students to be kind to one another. This year’s Random Acts of Kindness week
will take place February 13-February 17. Check out this site for ideas that they can implement on their own or

We expect our students to take ownership of their learning. Please talk to your students about how they plan
on using the Mid-Winter break to reinforce what they are learning in school. If they are unsure, encourage
them to ask their teachers. Quarter 3 progress reports will be distributed the week of March 20, 2017 thus the
Mid-Winter recess is a great opportunity to catch up or move ahead. It is also a good opportunity to spend

A Message From the Assistant Principal of Student Support
Dear Parent/Guardian,
I am very excited about this upcoming semester and the strides our students have made in the academic race to get to this point.
During the first semester we had a significant number of our students who jumped many hurdles and were able to make the Principal’s List and Honor Roll. Despite their hurdles, they continued to come to school every day; they pushed past the pain and continued to put one foot in front of the other. In the words of B.C Forbes “How you start is important, but it is how you finish that
counts. In the race for success, speed is less important than stamina. The sticker outlasts the sprinter.”
As we begin the second half of the academic school year, I want to encourage each and every one of you, not to retreat, but to become even more involved in the academic and social life of your child. Second semester marks the final stretch of the academic
race and we want our students to FINISH STRONG, and to do so they need YOU to be the loudest voice in the crowd saying
“come on you can do it!”
Insist that they arrive to school on time. Insist that they be in full uniform. Insist that they attend afterschool and Saturday
Regents Prep. Insist that they don’t procrastinate in doing their homework.
Thank you for the time, energy and love you have poured into their lives to get them to this point—insist that they finish strong.

Birth of a Nation: Movie Night and Discussion Wednesday February 1, 2017 2pm-4:30pm FREE
Paintings that Pop: Students will paint a portrait inspired by an African American Artist Tuesday February 7,

Keeping It Real Conference: Students will be broken up into male/ female groups to discuss issues relating to
equality and diversity and will learn about African American Figures that are not always discussed in History
Classes. Wednesday February 8th 2pm-4pm FREE
Black Excellence Gala: WCHS presents an Elegant Evening of Dinner, Dancing and the Celebration of Black Excellence. Friday February 10, 2017 5:30-9:30PM . Dinner will be served at 6:30PM $6 for Students and Staff

Staff members who attended colleges and universities. Students will learn about the college experience and how

MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA
Estimadas Familias,
El segundo semestre comenzará pronto y debemos recordarnos del trabajo que hacemos todos
los días para asegurar que ofrezcamos preparación universitaria, rigor académico, y programación de alto interés para sus hijos. Durante el primer semestre, tomamos el tiempo para asegurar
que satisfacemos las necesidades de sus hijos y también ofrecerles oportunidades para explorar
sus intereses.
Armados con mayor detalles sobre las habilidades cognitivas de los estudiantes, ahora podemos
crear programación individualizada dirigida a empujar la dotación académica y promover aun más
las habilidades de su hijo. Estamos encantados de ampliar nuestras clases de honores, además
de proveer intervención para satisfacer las necesidades de los estudiantes. Por favor note, la
reunión de padres en febrero se concentrará en los cambios académicos que son pertinentes a
su hijo basados en la evaluación de datos. Más específicamente, detallaremos la respuesta de la
escuela sobre las areas de necesidad de su hijo. Cada familia tendrá la oportunidad de programar una reunión de planificación académica durante la segunda parte del año donde hablaremos
individualmente sobre la programación de su hijo. Aunque nuestros maestros son la fuerza impulsora detrás de las clases académicas, miembros del equipo administrativo y el equipo de apoyo estudiantil trabajarán con usted para asegurar que estamos creando la secuencia de cursos
académicos correctos para su hijo. La manera más rápida de programar su reunión de planificación académica es asistiendo a una de las reuniones de padres el 2 de febrero y programar una
cita. Estamos seguros que entre la secuencia de cursos individuales, el lanzamiento este semestre de oportunidades de estudio independiente y cursos de desarrollo profesional y laboral,

Un mensaje de la Sub-Directora de Apoyo Estudiantil:
Estimado padre/tutor,
Esto muy entusiasmada sobre el próximo semestre y los avances académicos que han tenido nuestros estudiantes para llegar a este
punto. Durante el primer semestre tuvimos un número significativo de estudiantes quienes han superado varios obstáculos para
llegar a lista de la Directora y la lista de honores. A pesar de los obstáculos, continuaron a venir a la escuela todos los días; superaron el dolor y continuaron a poner un pie en frente del otro. En las palabras de B.C Forbes “Cómo comienza es importante, pero
cómo termina es que cuenta. En la carrea hacia el éxito, la resistencia es más importante que la velocidad. La persona perseverante dura más que el velocista”
Al comenzar la segunda mitad del año escolar académico, quiero animarlos a todos a no retirarse, pero que se involucren más en la
vida académica y social de su hijo. El segundo semestre significa el tramo final de la carrera académica y queremos que nuestros
estudiantes TERMINEN FUERTE, y para lograr eso necesitan que USTED sea la voz más alta en la multitud diciendo “¡vamos
que tú si puedes!”
Insista que lleguen a tiempo a la escuela. Insista que estén en uniforme completo. Insista que asistan a clases de repaso después de la escuela y repaso los sábados para los Regents. Insista a no procrastinar con su tarea.
Gracias por el tiempo, energía, y amor que han invertido en sus vidas para que hayan llegado a este punto – insista que terminen
fuerte.

Pinturas que llaman la atención: Los estudiantes pintarán un retrato inspirado por un artista afro americano. Martes 7 de febrero

Conferencia de “Keeping it Real”: Los estudiantes serán separados en grupos de hembras y varones para discutir temas relacionados
con la igualdad y la diversidad y aprenderán sobre figuras afro americanos quienes no siempre discuten en las clases de historia.

Baile de Gala de la Excelencia Negra: La WCHS presenta una noche elegante de cena, baile, y la celebración de excelencia negra.

Taller sobre la Historia de la Narración de Cuentos: Los estudiantes aprenderán sobre la historia de la narración de cuentos en la
