December 11, 2016 Third Sunday of Advent St. Andrew Catholic Church 806 NE Alberta Street Portland, OR 97211 Father Dave Zegar Tel: 503-281-4429 Fax: 503-281-4411 [email protected] www.standrewchurch.com St. Andrew is a faith community baptized into one body, which honors and celebrates diversity. We welcome and include persons of every color, language, ethnicity, origin, ability, sexual orientation, gender expression, marital status, and life situation. La Parroquia de San Andrés es una comunidad bautizada en un cuerpo, que honra y celebra la diversidad. Acogemos a las personas de todos colores, lenguas, razas, origenes, habilidades, orientación sexual, estado civil y estilos de vida. Parish Mission St. Andrew Parish recognizes that, as Jesus Christ was sent by God to “bring the good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the Lord’s year of favor,” (Luke 4:18) La Parroquia de San Andrés reconoce que, así como Jesús fue enviado por Dios “para traer la Buena Nueva a los pobres, para anunciar libertad a los cautivos, y a los ciegos nueva luz. Poner en libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor,”(San Lucas 4:18) ....so it is the mission of St. Andrew Parish to be a visible presence of Christ in our culturally and racially diverse neighborhood, rooted in the Gospel and nurtured by liturgy, prayer, and the community of faith. As such we commit ourselves to work with the poor, the powerless, and the oppressed for the liberation of all; to seek justice, compas- sion, and peace in our lives, community, and world; and to proclaim and celebrate God’s unconditional love for all. December 11, 2016 Third Sunday of Advent GAUDETE SUNDAY BE PATIENT Imprisoned John the Baptist sends his disciples with a question: Are you really the one? Jesus answers by listing the works of the Messiah. “Happy the person who does not lose faith in me,” he adds. Jesus praises John as the greatest child born of woman, but notes that the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John. As the end of time draws closer do you keep faith in Jesus? Are you patient until he comes? Can you dare to be one of the least in the kingdom? Today is “Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday.” Why? What is all the rejoicing about? More than two hundred years ago a man named Isaac Watts wrote the words to a Christmas carol which, no doubt, you have heard every Christmas since you were born. The first verse reads: Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare him room And heaven and nature sing. Do you every wonder if that is really true? Is there joy in the world because Jesus was born? Yes! There is joy and happiness, celebration and song, excitement and honest-to-goodness merriment. There is hardly a nook or a cranny, hardly a country on the entire earth that doesn’t have at least some Christian people who join in celebrating Jesus’ birth. Almost as though the Liturgy can't wait to celebrate the presence of the Savior, the Word of God today tells us to rejoice. How will you put that word into practice as we enter this second half of the Advent season? Save the DATES We will decorate the church for Christmas on Sunday December 18th at 2:00 PM. Many hands will make for light work. Our Lady of Guadalupe: Monday Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2001, OCP. All December 12th is the Feast of Our rights reserved. Lady of Guadalupe. LAS POSADAS LAS POSADAS: is a nine-day rotating pilgrimage popular in Latin America and the Philippines commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Suggested by St. Ignatius Loyola as the focus of a Christmas novena in the 16th century, it was shaped by St. John of the Cross into a pageant in 1580. It was introduced in Mexico in 1587 as a solemn celebration in church but soon began to be celebrated in homes and became more festive. Las Posadas weaves together Advent themes of waiting, hospitality and social justice. Our Parish Posada will be celebrated at 6:00 PM on 5 Monday December 19th. Advent is the season of waiting. Its function is to remind us what we’re waiting for as we go through life too busy with things that do not matter to remember the things that do. When year after year we hear the same scriptures and the same hymns of longing for the life to come, of which this is only its shadow, it becomes impossible to forget the refrains of the soul. Advent relieves us of our commitment to the frenetic in a fast-paced world. It slows us down. It makes us think. It makes us look beyond today to the “great tomorrow” of life. Without Advent, moved only by the race to nowhere that exhausts the world around us, we could be so frantic with trying to consume and control this life that we fail to develop within ourselves a taste for the spirit that does not die and will not slip through our fingers like melted snow. Quinceañeras: Se realizan cada tercer sábado del mes. Tienen que ser miem- bros de la parroquia y tener la primera comunión hecha. Llame a Diana al 503-281-4429 ext 17 para registrarse y confirmar la fecha. It is while waiting for the coming of the reign of God, Advent after Advent, that we come to realize that its coming depends on us. What we do will either hasten or slow, sharpen or dim our own commitment to do our part to bring it.
