What is embedded reading?
• A use of 3 or more readings of increasing difficulty created from the
same outline
• Exposure to repeated versions of the same text and participation in a
variety of activities related to the text
• Designed to build language skills and gain a deeper understanding of
the text each time

How does this benefit students?
• Students draw upon their prior knowledge about the topic to assist
them in the understanding of the whole reading
• Students become more and more comfortable with the topic as they
read each successive sample
• Students will be able to work/read in groups and help each other to
decode and decipher meaning of individual words and the overall
reading
Closure Activities
• Writing assignment : Timed writing based on the topic of the embedded
reading used in the classroom.
• Illustration of the reading: Students may illustrate portions of the story
provided by the teacher.
• Tell your own story: Students may write telling a personal story or point of view
based on the embedded reading.

de poisson. Whiskers est triste. Whiskers aime
le « baked ziti ». Whiskers va au restaurant. Il
va au restaurant avec Big Bertha. Il y a du
« baked ziti ». Whiskers est content.
Aujourd’hui, Il y a un chat. Le chat s’appelle
Whiskers. Whiskers aime le poisson. D’abord,
Whiskers va au parc Cooper River. Il n’y a pas de
poisson au parc Cooper River. Whiskers est triste.
Alors, Whiskers va en Italie. En Italie, il n’y a pas de
poisson. Whiskers est toujours triste. Whiskers
aime le « baked ziti » aussi.Enfin, Whiskers va au
restaurant Maggiano’s. Il va au restaurant avec Big
Bertha. Il y a du baked ziti à Maggiano’s.
Finalement, Whiskers est content.
Aujourd’hui, Il y a un gros chat orange et italien qui s’appelle Whiskers.
Whiskers aime beaucoup le poisson. D’abord,Whiskers va lentement au
parc Cooper River à Pennsauken mais il n’y a pas de poisson au parc
Cooper River. C’est dommage ! Alors, Whiskers est triste et Whiskers va
rapidement en Italie. En Italie, il n’y a pas de poisson. Whiskers est
toujours triste mais tout à coup (suddenly) Whiskers voit une fille qui
s’appelle Big Bertha. Big Bertha n’est pas grosse. Elle est forte et jolie
(pretty) Big Bertha dit à Whiskers : « Bonjour, gros chat orange. Je
m’appelle Big Bertha. Comment t’appelles-tu ? Je n’aime pas le poisson.
J’aime le baked ziti. Et toi ?»
Maintenant, Whiskers n’aime plus le poisson ! Whiskers aime Big Bertha
et il aime le « baked ziti » aussi. Enfin, Whiskers va au restaurant
Maggiano’s avec la fille qui s’appelle Big Bertha. Il ne va pas au restaurant
avec Katie Ledecky. Il y a du baked ziti à Maggiano’s. Whiskers n’est plus
triste. Finalement, Whiskers et Big Bertha sont contents !
