EBIA Changemakers Be the Change October Intersession 2016 Overview: Our three Intersessions kick off with students suppor退ng our local community. Students collaborate on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) centered service projects. This is an opportunity to consider our impact and use our strengths to support the work of others. Intersessions are an opportunity to pause our “normal” school programs and bring our EBIA Innovator Norms to life outside classroom work. Our Changemakers Intersession focuses on engaging in Kindness, Ci退zenship and Leadership, Conscien退ousness, and Respect. Logistics: ● Students will submit project preferences in advisory the week of October 3rd, and will receive their project assignments via email the week of October 10th. ● Projects will run October 24th‐ 28th and 31st. The End of First Trimester Presenta退on of Learning will include Intersession projects and partner organiza退ons. This event will be held on the evening of November 1st from 6‐8 pm at EBIA. ● Intersession will run from 9:00am to 3:30pm. Please note, on intersession days there will be no EBIA Quest aꀀer‐school program. Pick‐up is at 3:30pm for all students. ● Most projects will take place at EBIA. For those students in off‐site projects, transporta退on will be provided by EBIA. Therefore, for all students, pick up and drop off will be at EBIA. ● On intersession project days, students will begin and end their day in advisory. ● Aꀀer the conclusion of intersession projects, students will be in their courses and with their advisors on November 1st and 2nd for PLP prepara退on. November 3rd and 4th are PLP conference days. Please note, PLP conference days are non‐a退endance days for students. Advisors will schedule and hold PLP mee退ngs with their advisory families. ith hundreds of different paths to homelessness . How can we start thinking about ways to help people out in a challenging 退me? Students will work to understand the needs of homeless people, volunteer in a local homeless services organiza退on, talk with Councilmember Larry Reid, leading a Homelessness Task Force in Oakland, and work to create an online pla뀀orm for local homeless services with Ehb Teng, co‐founder of Diginido Labs in San Francisco. Students will present the final website to Councilmember Reid to consider for implementa退on in one of Oakland’s publicly‐accessible computer systems. ***Addi退onal permission slip required for offsite trip. Hands on Farming and Building 6th‐7th EBIA* University of California Gill Tract Community Farm San Pablo Ave, Albany, CA 94706 In partnership with the UC Gill Tract Community Farm (UCGTCF) in Albany, students will work with farmers Jon and Evan on different projects about agriculture and ecology at both EBIA and the UC Gill Tract Community Farm. Students will learn hands‐on the many skills involved with running a small community farm, such as crop plan退ng, preparing and plan退ng beds, weeding, harves退ng, compos退ng and non‐toxic pest management. Projects include building a raised bed, pain退ng signs and murals, plan退ng a succulent bed at EBIA, taking an ecological poll, and more! *Students will be at EBIA 10/24, 10/28, and 10/31 ***Addi退onal permission slip required. Ci退zen Science: Community Service 6th‐7th EBIA** Learn about how ci退zen science, environmental management, and climate Chabot Space & change relate to local habitats, water availability, and drought cycles with the Science Center Chabot Space & Science Center. Students will spend part of the day learning 10000 Skyline more about these issues and part doing trail and field work in the areas Blvd., Oakland, CA surrounding Chabot. In addi退on to discussions and hands‐on ac退vi退es, students will be introduced to proper field work protocols and use of tools that they will be using throughout the week. **Students will be at EBIA for both Mondays of this program ***Addi退onal permission slip required for offsite trip. Revolu退on Lab Community Outreach 6th‐7th EBIA 3400 Malcolm Ave., Oakland, CA Work with Cycles of Change in the Revolu退on Lab: Bike and Skate Shop, along with a number of folks from the bike community to fix and donate bikes. Sew Awesome 6th‐7th EBIA 3400 Malcolm Ave., Oakland, CA Join us for 6 days of sewing projects that benefit communi退es worldwide. Star退ng at the local level, we will s退tch up pillowcases and aprons for the FESCO Family Shelter in Hayward and finish off our week making #SewPowerful purses for girls in Africa. Learn the basics of running the sewing machine, along with tons of sewing 退ps & tricks, while making the world a be退er place. Oakland Zoo Service Project 7th‐8th Oakland Zoo 9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland, CA Students will experience the “working side” of the daily zoo life. Help the zoo's Educa退on, Animal Care and Hor退culture departments in cleaning animal exhibits, crea退ng animal enrichment, and maintaining zoo grounds while mee退ng our program animals up close. ***Addi退onal permission slip required. Ranger Naturalist Support Crew 7th‐8th EBIA* Tilden Nature Area 600 Canon Dr, Berkeley, CA 94708 Get first‐hand knowledge of what it is like to be a Park Ranger or Naturalist at Tilden Nature Area. Help repair the historic Quail Guzzler fountain, plant na退ve plants around the Visitor Center, and hike the trails in search of wildlife and adventure! All par退cipants must bring a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt, and hiking or tennis shoes each day. *Students will be at EBIA on the final Monday project date, 10/31 ***Addi退onal permission slip required for offsite trip. Ul退mate 7th‐8th EBIA Ul退mate frisbee is a sport for everyone of all genders, backgrounds, ages, and Frisbee Leadership Ambassadors 3400 Malcolm Ave., Oakland, CA skill levels! Join coach and program organizer Jen Pashley of Bay Area Disc to learn more about the sport of ul退mate frisbee and its unique 'Spirit of the Game'. Students will: 1) complete group projects diving into some of today's issues in sports 2) play lots of ul退mate frisbee 3) lead a ul退mate frisbee course for fellow EBIA students. This program supports the development of spirited, knowledgeable, and excellent leaders. Sex and Gender Educa退on for the Modern Teenager 7th‐8th EBIA 3400 Malcolm Ave., Oakland, CA Think sex and gender educa退on is boring and outdated?? Let's re‐write it!! We're looking for mature, curious, and fun young people to create video and wri退ng materials for The Whole Human Project’s sex educa退on classes at middle schools across the Bay Area! This is an amazing leadership opportunity and we're SO excited to work with you. Design and Build: Outdoor Makers’ Space 7th‐8th EBIA 3400 Malcolm Ave., Oakland, CA Design and build an outside workspace and shade covering for EBIA and the Revolu退on Lab. Tell the story of EBIA Changemakers and reach out to the community to raise awareness about the work being done. EBIA Robo退cs Club ALL EBIA This intersession ac退vity is an extension of the EBIA Robo退cs Club and 3400 Malcolm par退cipants must be ac退ve members of the club to enroll. Students will Ave., Oakland, CA con退nue building and programming their Lego Robots as well as complete a community service project which focuses on solving a real world engineering problem involving animal welfare.
