Google holds kids’ tech street fair

T
hese street squads had game.
The f‎ air held on Union Square on Thurs.,
Oct.13th, offered more than food and
amusements – it boasted robots and gadgets.
Google hosted its third NYC Geek Street
Fair, an interactive event to foster students’
interest in science, technology, engineering
and math (STEM) and computer science.
A collection of technology ﬁrms,
community-based organizations and museums
from across the city set up interactive stations
for young students to explore.
Visitors could observe Minecraft robots
at work, build their own structures using
JavaScript, and explore origami design with
illuminated paper creatures, among other
activities.
Teacher Christy Crawford brought her
students from Bronx Community Charter
School to enjoy the fair.
“There’s so much for them to see here to
inspire them,” said Crawford. “And it’s nice
to see that many of the people working at
these technology companies are young. I’m
telling our students, ‘In a few years, this will
be you.’”
The Bronx school has its own robotics and
coding programs, and students are working
on making their own app.
“This is a really amazing event,” said
seventh grader Devin Moss. “It’s great to
network with people.”
The event also featured appearances
from Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.
“Are there any geeks in the house?” asked
Brewer as she took the stage. “I love civic
hackathons and I love young engineers and I
love partners who care about STEM.”
Brewer encouraged students to use open
data from the New York City Council for their
schoolwork.
“One of the great things about New York
City is it’s full of data,” she said.
Black Girls Code, a non-proﬁt group
that teaches young minority females about
computer programming, web design and
robotics, was seeking to attract young
participants to its weekend seminars.
“The idea is we’re hoping to spark interest
in programming,” said Program Manager
Calena Jamieson. “It empowers girls to have
a choice in these types of careers.”

Google celebró su tercera Feria Callejera NYC
Geek, un evento interactivo para fomentar el
interés de los niños en la ciencia, la tecnología,

en inglés) y la informática.
Una colección de ﬁrmas de tecnología,
organizaciones comunitarias y museos de toda
la ciudad, colocaron estaciones interactivas para

F
or Marie Spivey, her recent
travels have proven a sage
decision.
The Bronx senior has been a client at the
center on East 188th Street, which provides
LGBT-centric services for older adults, for
the past two years.
Spivey participates in social events,
weekday lunches, seminars and wellness
programs at SAGE, which stands for Services
and Advocacy for Gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender Elders.
“I do it all here,” she remarked.
Spivey said she particularly cherishes the
weekly women’s support group hosted by the
center.
“It’s really important to have these services,
and to network with others like me,” she said.
“There don’t seem to be many programs for
LGBT adults in this area.”
Seeking to improve resources for the LGBT
community in the borough, State Senator Jeff
Klein has allocated $150,000 to SAGE Center
Bronx to help expand its services.
To mark National Coming Out Day, Klein
joined City Councilmember Ritchie Torres at
SAGE on Tues., Oct. 11 to present a check to
the group’s Chief Executive Ofﬁcer, Michael
Adams.
The funds are expected to boost SAGE’s
outreach efforts to connect with older LGBT
adults in the borough.
Klein said that the center performs essential
work by taking care of the Bronx’s seniors.
“They’re the ones who helped build the
groundwork in our communities, and built
our communities,” he remarked. “We have to
make sure we meet their needs.”
Adams said there are more than 7,000
LGBT seniors currently residing in the Bronx.
“One out of three of them live in poverty,”
said Adams. “That’s why the SAGE Center is
so important and that’s why we need support
so our programs can grow.”

Public Library is offering Latin classes on

Latin is the language of the ancient Romans.
The introductory course is run by the Paideia

that promotes classical humanities focused
on Latin and Ancient Greek languages and

questions can get answers from
volunteer attorneys,” explained
State Bar Association President
Claire Gutekunst. “We call
it “pro bono in your PJs,”
because attorneys can provide
pro bono assistance whenever
and wherever it is convenient
for them.”
The site, NY.FreeLegalAnswers.org,
is available to low-income New Yorkers.
Questions are limited to non-criminal legal
matters, such as landlord-tenant problems,
consumer debt or family issues. Lawyers
answering the questions are volunteers.
Attorneys can scan posted questions to
determine which fall within their areas of
expertise and choose which ones to answer.
They can submit answers at any time of day.
All questions and answers are
conﬁdential.
To use New York Free
Legal Answers, individuals
must register on the website,
NY.FreeLegalAnswers.org,
and respond to screening
questions to determine if
their income qualiﬁes them
for the service.
Those
not
qualifying will be directed
to lawyer referral and other
relevant services in their
communities.
Clients, who must be at
least 18 years old, can ask

A dreamer digs deep

K
athleen Martínez is fond of
missions.
She achieved career highs as a criminal
attorney with a successful practice in the
Dominican Republic, and earned a master’s
degree in ﬁnance – while raising two young
children.
But she wanted more.
Over a decade ago, she chose to pursue
a different aspiration – becoming an
archaeologist.

“People told me it was only a dream,”
she recalled, “and that I should not continue
having this idea.”
Ever since she was a child, Martínez
fantasized about traveling to Egypt and
making an important discovery.
Even her closest family questioned her,
while others told her that Latinas don’t poke
around in tombs.
Ignoring the advice of others, Martínez
quit her law career in 2005 and traveled to
Egypt. She had spent many years researching
the life of Egyptian queen Cleopatra, and had
hoped to locate her tomb.
“My challenge is to prove that Latin
Americans
can
also
dream,” said Martínez,
who recounted her tale
for media members on
Fri., Oct. 14, at Columbia
University
Medical
Center’s Hammer Health
Sciences Building.
She spoke in advance
of a presentation for
community
members
scheduled the next day in
the same building.
The forum was arranged

Espaillat, who joined
Martínez
with

Councilmember
Ydanis
Rodríguez,
Democratic

Martínez explained that when she ﬁrst
arrived in Egypt, she sought an excavation
license from the country’s Ministry of
Antiquities.
It is a highly selective process.
Though approximately 1,000 people apply
for licenses each year, only 80 are granted,
Martínez said.
After
a
presentation
to convince the ministry,
Martínez was granted a
license to excavate, but for
only two months, instead of
the year-long license that is
standard.
“In
archaeology,
two
months is nothing, but I took
what they gave me,” she
remarked.
On the last day of her
two-month dig, Martínez
made a key discovery — two
chambers in the Taposiris
Magna temple where the
tomb of Cleopatra might
prove to be.
Martínez was later granted
additional permissions to
excavate, and has located
more than 600 artifacts in
recent years, along with
numerous
tunnels
and
underground passages, she
said.
One hundred of the artifacts
she has unearthed are now on
display at the Cairo Museum.
Martínez stated that when she resumes
excavation in November, she is conﬁdent she
will uncover Cleopatra’s tomb.
Though archaeologists have long searched
for the tombs of Cleopatra and Marc
Anthony, they have so far been unsuccessful,
yet Martínez believes she has pinpointed

Keeping Watch on the Worst
T
his is one New York City top ten
list you don’t want to be on.
Naming names.
Public Advocate Letitia James released her
annual Worst Landlords Watchlist, a database
of the 100 landlords who have compiled the
most building violations.
The 2016 list also includes the 20 worst
buildings in each borough.
James revealed her list at a Foley Square
rally for tenant rights on October 13.
“Every New Yorker deserves a safe and
decent place to live, and every apartment
must meet basic standards of decency,” said
James. “The Landlord Watchlist has become
a critical tool for helping tenants organize
against unscrupulous landlords, has assisted
with the criminal convictions of some of
New York’s worst landlords, and has led to
better living conditions for countless New
Yorkers. We will never stop ﬁghting for
the housing rights of every New Yorker.
The watchlist, ﬁrst implemented in 2010
by then-Public Advocate Bill de Blasio
in 2010, is intended to identify buildings
and property owners that are in constant
violation of the law and hold those landlords
accountable. It is compiled using data from
the city’s Department of Buildings (DOB)
and Department of Housing Preservation and
Development (HPD).
The 2016 list marks the ﬁrst time that data
has been included data on number of DOB
violations, as opposed to DOB complaints. This

Department of Finance, which allows database

C

Torres needed a job.
He paid a $100 fee to one employment
agency and $200 to another in 2015, but
neither connected him with a job.
“They kept telling me, ‘We should have
work for you soon,’ but then nothing would
happen,” said Torres. “But they still took my
money.”
A group of state lawmakers is calling
on Governor Andrew Cuomo to increase
protections for job seekers and enact harsher
penalties for employment agencies that
defraud workers.
State Senators Jeff Klein and Diane
Savino, together with State Assemblymember
Francisco Moya and Democratic nominee for
Assembly Marisol Alcántara, have released
a report indicating that a high number of
employment agencies, which often charge
upfront fees for job placement services, are
illegally promising jobs to immigrant workers
and failing to refund fees if employment is not
found.
“It really angers me when these
employment agencies, which are supposed
to help people achieve the American dream,
end up ripping people off,” Klein remarked at
a press conference on October 13. “They’ve
turned the American dream into the American
scheme.”
“We are the invisible
workers,” said
Fran Guerrero.
“It’s unconscionable,”
said Senator Jeff Klein.
Employment agencies licensed by the
state or the city’s Department of Consumer
Affairs (DCA) are not permitted to guarantee
employment to a job seeker, and are legally
required to refund advance fees if work is not
secured.
During an undercover investigation which
included video segments, members of Klein
and Savino’s staff visited 37 licensed and
unlicensed employment agencies in Queens,
Brooklyn and Manhattan, ﬁnding that 76
percent asked for advance fees as high as
$200.

Klein, in noting that his $150,000 gift
marked the ﬁrst time that SAGE has received
state funding, made a promise that it wouldn’t
be the last.
“I pledge to you that we’re going to make
sure we get more,” he said.
“It’s hard to imagine a more underserved
population than LGBT seniors,” commented
Torres.
He said that many LGBT elders are
separated or abandoned by their families and
end up dying alone.
“This funding will save lives,” stated
Torres.
Spivey said that there is still a reticence
among LGBT individuals to visit social
service outlets and community centers, as
they are not always made to feel welcome.
“There’s still a fear there,” she said. “Not
every place we go is accepting of the LGBT
community.”
Located inside Union Community Health
Center (UCHC), SAGE Center Bronx is able
to easily connect LGBT elders with health
services.
SAGE Site Manager José Collazo said that
social workers provide case management
as well as support groups for caregiving,
bereavement, HIV, depression and more.
The site, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. from Monday through Friday, also
provides hot lunch ﬁve days a week for a
suggested $2 donation.
SAGE Center Bronx hosts about 75 clients
per weekday, Adams said. Before the site
opened two years ago, many clients had to
travel into other boroughs to access LGBT
support services.
“I do it all here,”
said Marie Spivey.
“People come here to get a sense of
community,” Collazo said. “There’s not
a lot of places around here that serve this
population, but this is right in their backyard.”
Adams said that he is seeking to expand the
size of SAGE’s Bronx location.
“We’re bursting at the seams in this
space,” remarked Adams, who said he is in
discussions with UCHC about potentially
acquiring more ofﬁce space in the building.
Collazo said he is already visualizing ways to
use the funding providing by Klein, such as
adding more Spanish-language programming
and experimenting with evening and weekend
activities.
And, he’d like to acquire a van to help
bring clients to and from the center.
“I’ll call it the SAGE Mobile,” he
remarked. “I already have the name, now all I
need is the van.”

$500 to $1000 for a ﬁrst offense and $5,000
for a second offense.
Moya said that unscrupulous agencies tend
to prey on immigrant and minority workers,
who often seek low-wage, entry-level jobs as
cleaners, busboys and manual laborers.
“It’s important that this gets signed into
law so we can protect the most vulnerable of
workers,” he said.
“New York is the most progressive state
in the country — we need to send a message
and we need to take the lead by passing these
laws,” added Alcántara.
Fran Guerrero, a cleaning service worker,
was charged a $440 advance fee by an
employment agency that failed to ﬁnd her a
job.
“When I asked for a refund, the company
denied me,” she said.
Guerrero said she found assistance from
New Immigrant Community Empowerment
(NICE), a community-based organization that
protects rights for job seekers.
“They told me how to protect myself and
explained what to look out for when going for
a job,” said Guerrero.
Manuel Castro, Executive Director of
NICE, said the organization attempts to get
agency fees back for defrauded immigrant
workers.
“If they refuse to give the money back,
we ﬁle a complaint with Consumer Affairs
and we’ll do some organizing around that
business,” Castro explained. “We’ll picket

collaborated on creating a Spanish-language

The Harlem-based organization runs an
afterschool program for young men of color
that combines golf with STEM education.
“There’s a big connection between science
and math and the game of golf,” said Program
Leader Veeshan Narinesingh. “This is a
student population that wouldn’t normally be
playing golf.”
Narinesingh said the group takes students
out to the golf course, and also works on
building character, academic performance and
self-esteem.
“This program is unlike any other,” said
Zion Smith, a ninth grader at Eagle Academy
for Young Men of Harlem. “The STEM
courses are teaching me math way above
my grade level. It’s also a great way to get to
know people and gain conﬁdence.”

of the bill. The union, which had fought for
the bill, represents workers in cafeterias,
executive dining rooms, restaurants, bars,
delis, airports, sports and exhibition halls
and performing arts centers throughout New
York City, Westchester, Long Island and New
Jersey.

Three Decades Later, $3.4 Trillion Lost?

criminalization wasted trillions
of dollars that could have been
used to improve lives, according
to a new report.
The report, The $3.4 Trillion Dollar
Mistake, said from 1982 to 2012, spending
on criminal justice nationally increased
by almost 230 percent. It can be found at

According to Adilka Pimentel, a youth
organizer with Make the Road New York
(MRNY), more than $230 billion was
spent in New York alone on failed “get
tough on crime” measures and the “war on
drugs,” money that could have been used
to improve education, access to health care
and creating jobs.

“We’re looking at a lot of different ways
that could have been a more successful path
in the last 30 years and even for the years
later to come, because everything affects
people now, but it also affects our future,”
she said.
That money, she said, could have closed
the $3.9 billion gap
in public school
funding,
ﬁnanced
a Dream Act for
immigrant students,
expanded
access
to health care, and
eliminated
tuition
at all city and state
universities.
Another impact has been a huge increase in
the number of people in the criminal justice
system. And as Darian X, also with Make
the Road, pointed out, New York City’s jail
on Riker’s Island shows that people of color
are much more likely to be incarcerated.
“Eighty-nine percent of the people who are
in there are black and Latino, so I think that
shows how investing in the criminal justice
system is disproportionately impacting black
and Latino communities,” he said.
Nationwide, in 2013, one of every 55
white Americans was in the criminal justice
system, compared with one of 18 black
residents and one of 34 Latinos.
Pimentel
said
the
report’s
recommendations include redirecting money
now ﬂowing into the criminal justice
system toward initiatives that invest in
people.
“Which could be more jobs, livable
jobs with wages that take folks out of
poverty,” she added. “It could be putting
money into mental institutions so that
folks who have mental disabilities have
that kind of support.”

parallels between Miranda’s navigation of
new terrain while crafting the musical to
Hamilton’s forging forward with his own
critical experiments – on the battleground,
as a statesman, as a new father.
There are sharp differences too.
While one historian in the ﬁlm lovingly
describes Alexander Hamilton as “arrogant
[and] irritating,” Miranda is, by turns,
deprecating, modest, and focused.
One scene depicts a conversation with
Nas, during which Miranda tells the
celebrated writer and rapper that he was the
inspiration for much of the show’s music.
Astonished, Nas waits a beat, and
responds with a quiet “Word.”
In another scene, Miranda describes
Thomas Jefferson as Bugs Bunny,
bouncing and conﬁdent. He’s been in
Paris and missed the revolution. While the
newborn nation is busy rapping, he sails in
and sings, “What did I miss?” in a brassy
jazz riff.
Viewers also get the inside scoop on how
the verbal rap duels between Jay-Z and
Nas inspired the back-and-forth between
Hamilton and Burr.
During one sequence, Miranda and
Leslie Odom, Jr., who originated the role
of Burr, visit the Museum of American
Finance in Washington, D.C. Seated side
by side, the two mime placing ammunition
in replicas of the dueling pistols that ended
the ﬁrst Treasury Secretary’s life. It is a
step-by-step process that takes time.

work to load up, Miranda quips, “There

After the screening, during a talkback panel
with Miranda, Chernow, and ﬁlmmakers,
journalist Gayle King asked why Chernow’s
ultra-thick bio was Miranda’s choice of
vacation reading, insisting that most people
read mysteries or romances on the beach. But
he replied biographies are typically the ﬁrst
books on his reading list – though he confessed
that he’d also watched a lot of Batman.
In a ﬁlm that spans the nation’s capital;
Weehawken, New Jersey; and Mount Vernon,
Virginia, Washington Heights comes in for its
close-ups. Miranda spends long hours writing
songs in Aaron Burr’s bedroom at the MorrisJumel Mansion, and the long span of the

“Cleopatra was considered the human
representation of the goddess Isis, and this
temple is dedicated to worship Isis,” she
explained. “We found over 800 skeletons and
14 mummies, and everything we found was
related to the time of Cleopatra.”
“We are clearing those tunnels, and I
believe at the end of that, we will ﬁnd
Cleopatra’s tomb,” said the archaeologist,
whose work has been featured on CNN, PBS
and in National Geographic.
Espaillat said he plans to continue to
stage events that highlight outstanding
achievements from members of the
Dominican community.
“I think the major story behind this, is the
persistence of this young woman, who deﬁed
all odds, has been in Egypt for over a decade,
has had trouble self-ﬁnancing the project, but
has persisted,” he said.
Her achievements were met with praise by
two fellow explorers.
“When we won Miss Universe, we
declared a national holiday in the Dominican
Republic,” Alcántara said. “If you ﬁnd the
tomb, we should have another holiday.”
“I’m going to go home today and tell my
daughter I met a woman who want deep into
a tunnel and battled snakes and still kept
going,” added De La Rosa. “This should be
celebrated. The entire world is looking at our
community.”

convencer al ministerio, Martínez recibió una
licencia para excavar, pero solo durante dos

pero tomé lo que me dieron”, comentó.
