massimiliano agovino is a research fellow in the Dipartimento di Economia,
Università G. D’Annunzio, Chieti-Pescara, Italy. His research interests include labor economics, the economics of disability, and spatial econometrics.
manuel balán is an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science
and Institute for the Study of International Development at McGill University,
Montreal, Canada. He received his PhD in political science from the University of Texas at Austin. His research has concentrated on issues of corruption,
corruption-related scandals, and political competition in Latin America. His book
manuscript on these issues is currently under review. His current research focuses on issues of media and politics in the region. His work has appeared in
Comparative Politics, Desarrollo Económico, and Latin American Politics and Society,
among other journals.
horace a. bartilow is associate professor of political science at the University
of Kentucky. His area of research is international political economy. His recently
published articles have appeared in International Studies Quarterly, Foreign Policy
Analysis, Latin American Politics and Society, and National Political Science Review.
His research has addressed issues relating to the politics of international trade,
the politics of international cooperation in counternarcotics, and drug enforcement. He is the author of The Debt Dilemma: IMF Negotiations in Jamaica, Grenada
and Guyana (1997).
thomas c. bruneau is Distinguished Professor of National Security Affairs at
the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. He conducts seminars
throughout Latin America on democratic civil-military relations for the Center
for Civil-Military Relations. He has published Patriots for Profit: Contractors and
the Military in U.S. National Security (2011); Maras: Gang Violence and Security in
Central America, coedited with Lucía Dammert and Elizabeth Skinner (2011); and
The Routledge Handbook of Civil-Military Relations, coedited with Florina Cristiana
Matei (2012).
j. justin castro is an assistant professor of history at Arkansas State University.
His research interests include media, engineering, technology, politics, and popular culture in modern Latin America. Castro’s current book project is on radio
and state power in Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. His most recent article, “Radiotelegraphy to Broadcasting: Wireless Communications in Porfirian
and Revolutionary Mexico, 1899–1924,” appeared in Mexican Studies/Estudios
Mexicanos.

regina horta duarte is full professor of history at the Universidade Federal de
Minas Gerais. Her research focuses on Brazilian history, environmental history,
and the history of science. She has published A imagem rebelde: A trajetória libertária
de Avelino Fóscolo (1991), Noites circenses: Espetáculos de circo e teatro em Minas Gerais
no século XIX (1995), História e natureza (2005), and A biologia militante: O Museu
Nacional, especialização científica, divulgação do conhecimento e práticas políticas no
Brasil, 1926–1945 (2010). She has also written articles for Environmental History,
Luso-Brazilian Review, Latin American Research Review, Global Environmental, Journal
of Latin American Studies, and several Brazilian journals. She is currently editor
in chief of Revista Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana y Caribeña, the journal of the
Sociedad Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Historia Ambiental.

marcela gonzález rivas is an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs of the University of Pittsburgh. She studies social equity, particularly how community development and regional economic planning
can overcome issues of marginalization of people and places. Her research has
been published in Annals of Regional Science, Mexican Studies, and Development in
Practice. She has a PhD in city and regional planning from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill.
sebastián ibarra es magíster en sociología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica
de Chile y actualmente se desempeña como profesional asistente de la Facultad

evelyn p. jennings is the Margaret Vilas Chair of Latin American History at
St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. Her area of specialization is Spanish colonialism in Cuba, with a focus on state enslavement and forced labor in Havana in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She has published a number of
articles and book chapters, most recently “All in the Family? Colonial Cuba in an
Iberian Atlantic Frame” (2014) and “‘Some Unhappy Indians Trafficked by Force’:
Race, Status and Work Discipline in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Cuba” (2010). Jennings is currently working on a book-length study of state enslavement and other
forced labor, “Constructing the Empire in Havana: State Slavery in Defense and
Public Works, 1763–1840.” She is also coediting, with historian John Donoghue, a

norberto lanza es doctor en ciencias biológicas y se desempeña como investigador del Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas y docente de
las Universidad Nacional del Nordeste de Argentina. Sus principales temas de
interés se centran en los efectos de los cambios sociales, económicos y culturales
sobre el comportamiento reproductivo, demográfico, nutricional y epidemiológico de las poblaciones indígenas del Gran Chaco. Es miembro de la Asociación
Latinoamericana de Población y de la Asociación Argentina de Antropología

luigi manzetti is a visiting researcher at the Centre for the Study of the Americas. His latest book is Neoliberalism, Accountability, and Reform Failures in Emerging Markets: Eastern Europe, Russia, Argentina, and Chile in Comparative Perspective
(2010). His journal articles have appeared in World Politics, Comparative Political
Studies, Comparative Politics, Journal of Latin American Studies, and Latin American
Research Review.
f. javier murillo torrecilla es profesor titular de la Facultad de Formación de
Profesorado y Educación, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, España, y director
del doctorado en educación y coordinador del Grupo de Investigación “Cambio

soledad nión es licenciada en sociología y candidata a master en sociología
(Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, Universidad de la República, Uruguay). Tiene estudios de posgrado en metodología de la investigación (Instituto Universitario,
Centro Latinoamericano de Economia Humana). Desde el 2005 trabaja en investigación sobre el trabajo y las organizaciones. Más recientemente incursionó en
temas sobre construcción social de la salud y del riesgo. En la actualidad se desempeña como docente e investigadora del Departamento de Sociología, Facultad
de Ciencias Sociales, y de la Facultad de Derecho (Universidad de la República),
y como consultora independiente. Ha publicado recientemente “Calificaciones y

fernando pedrosa is professor and researcher at the Institute of Latin American
and Caribbean Studies, Faculty of Social Science, University of Buenos Aires. He
has given lectures and conferences about contemporary Latin American political
history in Japan, Germany, Russia, Brazil, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Netherlands, Spain, and Uruguay. He is the author of La otra izquierda: La socialdemocracia
en América Latina (2012). He has participated in and conducted research projects
funded by the European Union, the Ministry of Education (Spain), the University

raanan rein is the Elias Sourasky Professor of Latin American and Spanish History at Tel Aviv University and director of its S. Daniel Abraham Center for International and Regional Studies. A member of Argentina’s Academia Nacional
de la Historia, he is also co-president of the Latin American Jewish Studies Association. Rein is the author or editor of more than twenty-five books and several
dozen articles in academic journals. He is a coeditor of the journal Estudios Interdisciplinarios de América Latina y el Caribe.
josé antonio román es magíster y doctor en psicología social de la Universidad
Autónoma de Barcelona, España, y actualmente se desempeña como profesor adjunto de la Facultad de Psicología de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado. Es director

genaro sánchez barajas is professor in the Faculty of Economics of the Universidad Autónoma de México and National Researcher in the National System of Researchers of the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología National (CONACYT),
Mexico. His research interests include urban and regional development, public
policies, and spatial econometrics.
claudia valeggia es doctora en zoología y se desempeña como investigadora y
docente de la Universidad de Pennsylvania de Estados Unidos. También ejerce
como directora del Population Aging Research Center de la misma universidad.
Sus líneas de investigación se centran en ecología humana reproductiva, fisiología reproductiva, la historia la vida humana, etnopediatría, perspectivas bioculturales en la salud sexual y reproductiva, la salud de los pueblos indígenas de

enrique yepes is associate professor of Spanish and Latin American studies at
Bowdoin College. He received his PhD from Rutgers, the State University of New
Jersey, in 1998. His work focuses on the intersection of contemporary poetry and
cultural activism. He is the author of several articles on this topic, as well as Oficios
del goce: Poesía y debate cultural en Hispanoamérica, 1960–2000 (2000). His new work
examines the development of ecological thinking in twentieth-century Spanish
American poetry.
