ACCREDITATION TIME! WE NEED YOUR HELP!
PLANNING FOR ACCREDITATION
Wooster will now begin the process of accreditation through the Northwest Accreditation Commission [NWAC] of the
AdvancEd Organization. This process takes place at a minimum of every six years and will culminate in a visit from
an external team of administrators and educators who review the data-based plan of the school providing recommendations and commendations. Parents, guardians, teachers, students, and community stakeholders will be asked to participate in this process over the next several months. The initial conversation will include questionnaires and/or surveys to analyze the school’s effectiveness in the five AdvancEd Standards for Quality Schools:
1. Purpose and Direction
2. Governance and Leadership
3. Teaching and Assessing for Learning
4. Resources and Support Systems
5. Using Results for Continuous Improvement
Strengths and weaknesses will be identified through this accreditation process and a final plan will be created to improve Wooster’s system of educational delivery and increase student performance for the next five years. This plan is
reviewed on an annual basis to determine if Wooster has met its annual goals and determine whether or not additional changes need to be made.
Please plan on participating in Wooster’s Accreditation over the course of the next year by responding to surveys or
volunteering to be part of a subcommittee. We will be reaching out to our parent organizations for support, but you
are invited to leave a message for Principal Keuscher at [email protected] or call her directly at 3213161 if you would like to volunteer in helping with this process.

CLASS SCHEDULES & INFO FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MARLY BARAINCA
Welcome Back Colts!
I hope everyone had a great summer and are able to access their class schedules on Infinite Campus. Schedules are subject to
change. If you are having trouble logging into Infinite Campus, we are happy to help. The office is open 7:30 AM-4:00 PM, everyday. Over the summer counselors and I have been doing our very best to schedule you into the classes you requested. Remember, we may not be able to give you all of the classes you want – but I do promise to give you the classes you need for graduation.
If you do not receive a class you had hoped for, these may be one/some of the reasons why:
 You need a different class in order to graduate.
 Space availability. Classes like weights and metalworking are very popular and we were only able to satisfy about
half of the schedule requests.
 Conflicts in our master schedule. Certain classes are only offered once or twice a day. If you requested more than
one of these classes, there is a high probability of a conflict. One of the most common conflicts is senior foreign language and off campus.
 Cancellation of the class due to low student enrollment.
Schedule changes WILL BE made:
 If you have already earned credit for a course during the summer.
 If you failed a course during the previous spring semester and need to retake it.
 If there is a class you need to fulfill graduation requirements.
 If you are misplaced in a class as verified by assessment results and transcript review.
 If you have taken the class already and passed it.
Schedule changes WILL NOT be made:
 During the first week of school.
 To request a different teacher.
If you have concerns about your schedule, you may email or call your counselor to make an appointment to review your schedule. Counselors will return to school on July 28, 2016. To make contact by phone, dial 321-3160, press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish; press 6 for counselors, then press

SCHOOL SAFETY PROCEDURES FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MIKE NAKASHIMA
Wooster High School staff and students participate in monthly drills to review standard procedures for
emergencies. Wooster administrators, counselors, and teachers review the Emergency Preparedness Plan on
an annual basis and review concerns identified during drills each month. While each and every emergency
situation will provide obstacles to the best plans, the identification and rehearsal of roles provide stability in
stressful situations. Wooster is assigned a WCSD Police Officer, as are all high schools in Washoe County
School District, and has worked to develop relationships with representatives from our local emergency
responders.
Some thoughts on Emergency Preparedness for Parents/Guardians
Providing a safe environment for your sons and daughters is our number one priority and Wooster understands the need to continually evaluate emergency procedures. Thoughts and concerns regarding student
safety from all stakeholders is important and communication is a key component between the parents and
the school.
It is extremely important parents provide the registrar of the school with updated telephone numbers. Only
the primary guardians are able to change this information.
Parents/Guardians need to understand the first response of schools in any emergency situation will be to
provide for the safety of students by activating the School Incident Response Team [SIRT]. A school police
officer is located on our campus and other adults have access to radios or telephones to alert first responders
of an emergency situation. SIRT members have been identified to carry out specific duties.
Communication from the school to parents will not take place immediately during an emergency due to a
need to focus on the situation and provide parents with correct information. It is extremely important parents provide the school with updated telephone numbers so we can communicate with them! Our primary
mode of communication is through Blackboard Connect which pulls telephone numbers from Infinite Campus. It is also a great idea to register telephone numbers to the emergency notification system at http://
www.washoecounty.us/em/
Students are to follow the instructions of the teacher during drills. Drills are communicated as such according to district regulations. Students, teachers, and parents are encouraged to communicate possible hazards on campus to Wooster’s administrative
team. Parents/Guardians should not plan on accessing the school campus during or
immediately after an emergency. First responders need to have access to the campus
and increased traffic could result in delays. It is important to note some emergencies
will result in police officers restricting access to the campus.
Evacuation from buildings or the campus could result in movement of students to a Reunification Site where
they would reunify with their parents. The Reunification Site would be communicated to parents through
our telephone/text Blackboard Connect program from the school or district. In the case of a building evacuation, this could be as close as the football field or, in the case of a campus evacuation, the nearest school or
facility capable of maintaining the school’s student population. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the school’s plan, please feel free to contact: Mr. Nakashima at 321-3163 or Ms. Rosas at 3213165.
Mr. Nakashima, Assistant Principal of Attendance, Discipline & School Safety

DRESS CODE REMINDER FROM DEAN OF STUDENTS VIVIAN ROSAS
In preparing for the upcoming school year, please remember to keep the following in mind when shopping for school apparel.
Washoe County School District administrative regulations states, “The dress or grooming of all students must not present potential health or safety problems or cause distractions.” The dress code is outlined in a more complete manner on both the WCSD
website or at Wooster High School’s website: www.woostercolts.com. You will also find a copy of the district’s dress code policy
in your student’s planner that will be given to your student during the first week of school. A brief synopsis of the dress code is
as follows:
 Shirts must cover the upper and lower torso. Shirts must have a sleeve covering the shoulder.
 No tank tops, spaghetti straps or muscle shirts are allowed. Shirts cannot illustrate profane language, alcohol, drugs, or sexual overtones.
 Pants/shorts/skirts must cover the lower torso and undergarments. Shorts and shirts must be at least mid-thigh in length.
 Pajamas, lounge wear, and slippers are not allowed.
 Hats and head coverings are not permitted inside school buildings.
 Accessories such as bandanas, dangling belts, hanging chains, spiked jewelry, or blue and red shoelaces are not permitted on
campus.
A progressive discipline plan is in place in case consequences need to be assigned for a Dress Code Violation. Anyone found in
violation of this dress code must change their clothing, will receive a phone call home, and may receive lunch detention. Students wearing inappropriate attire will change and pick up the item after school. If the clothing is vulgar, obscene, or a safety
issue, parents will be notified and can pick up the item. On the 2nd offense the consequences can be
increased to include lunch detention, Saturday School, or 8th period detention. On the 3rd offense, in
school suspension and a parent meeting may occur. Please remember this dress code when you are

CELL PHONES
STUDENT REMINDERS: BE RESPONSIBLE, BE RESPECTFUL & BE ON TIME!
TARDY POLICY
Students may possess or use electronic devices, provided that the use of such devices does not interfere
with the instructional process. Students may use
their cell phones and electronic devices before
school, at lunch, and after school. Students who are
found to repeatedly violate the cell phone policy may
have their cell phone confiscated and taken to the
SSO office for the remainder of the day. The electronic device policy can be found in detail in your student’s planner that will be given to your student during the first week of school.
Wooster is not responsible for damage/theft of cell
phones, electronic devices, and/or personal property.
PARKING PERMITS
To support campus safety, students are required to register
their vehicles and purchase a parking permit from the Student Services Office for $5.00. Students must have a valid
drivers license in order to purchase a parking permit. The
parking permit is to be visible hanging from the rear view
mirror. Parking tickets may be issued to those vehicles without visible parking permits. Wooster is not responsible for
theft or damage to a vehicle parked on campus.
Attending class every day is extremely important to your
student’s education, progress, and success in and out of
school. Students who come to class tardy not only cause a
significant disruption to the classroom delaying instruction which can impede the learning of others, but can
also affect their own learning process. In addition, students need to learn that being on time is a life skill that is
critical in the future. If there is a reason, problem, or concern with your student getting to school on time please
contact me so that we can work together and come to a
solution.
Excessive tardies will be treated as insubordination and
the following procedure will continue for the 2016-17
school year.
A weekly report will be run each week by the Student
Services Office [SSO] to identify students who are not
meeting attendance expectations. After five tardies, the
student will be referred to the Student Services Office
[SSO] for a ‘Round 1’ consequence: Lunch Detention.
After eight tardies the student will be assigned a ‘Round
2’ consequence: Afterschool Detention. After eleven tardies the student is assigned a ‘Round 3’ consequence: Afterschool School Beautification...and so on. We will work
work to find a solution to be on time rather than continuing with consequences.

ATTENDANCE INFORMATION FROM ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MIKE NAKASHIMA
Hello Wooster Parents and Students!
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying your summer vacation. First day of school: Monday, August 8th.
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE INFORMATION
Please access Attendance Policies at http://www.woostercolts.com/resources/policies/
Wooster has made great gains over the past few years in many areas and ultimately with graduation rates. An area of
growth which needs to be addressed is attendance and the greatest way we can improve attendance is increased communication between the school and parents. Attending at least 90% of the semester to have the opportunity to receive
the credit earned is the law and
students are required to attend 100% of all scheduled classes they are enrolled unless otherwise excused.
 Parents must submit a note to the attendance office which includes the dates of the absence, reason for the ab

sence, the student’s full name, the parent’s full name or call the school at 321-3160 regarding the student’s absence within three days after the student returns to school or the absence will be unexcused.
Any Absence not verified by a parent counts as unexcused and students who have received a truancy notice will
have that unexcused absence changed to a truancy if the parent doesn’t verify the attendance.
5 Circumstance absences per semester for high school students do not count against their attendance if approved
by the sited administrator: Bereavement; Medical Emergency; Person Business; Family Business; Pre-Arranged Legal or Religious Event.
Parents must provide documentation that a student is receiving medical attention if out for extended sickness.
Parents are requested to prearrange legal, medical, and dental appointments. Verification of those appointments
should be obtained for the school attendance office.
Students must obtain an Off-Campus Pass from the Office or Nurse’s Office to leave campus. A student who leaves
without obtaining a pass will receive an Unexcused Absence for classes missed that day.
Appointments, job interviews, and military recruitment testing are considered personal appointments and should
be made after school hours.
Students receiving 8 unexcused absences during the regular school day will fail their class. (Subject to Appeal to
the Principal or Office of the Superintendent)
I look forward to working with parents and students this school year to help them complete this leg of their four year
trip towards graduation.
Michael Nakashima,
Assistant Principal of Attendance, Discipline, & School Safety

IB MYP PERSONAL PROJECT SHOWCASE
All Sophomore students are required to compete a personal project. This project is a culminating activity that ends with a
showcase in the spring. Sophomore students will display their projects for Freshmen students. If they successfully pass the
personal project, sophomores can earn off-campus privilege passes for lunchtime (if on track for graduation), their Academic
Letter, and their MYP Certificate!
IB MYP GRADES FOR 9TH & 10TH GRADE STUDENTS
As a requirement of our IB MYP program at Wooster, we must report MYP grades for all our 9th and 10th grade students. You
may have seen a separate column on Infinite Campus labeled “MYP”. The MYP column may be blank as we train teachers and
parents on what the MYP grade means. As always, feel free to call with any concerns regarding your student’s grades.

How does the MYP grading change my student’s grade?
IB MYP grading is completely separate from traditional grading. Your student will continue to receive a traditional %
and letter grade which will go on his/her transcript and will reflect many factors (homework, tests, completed work,
participation, etc.).

Why is the MYP grade a number?
IB MYP grading is based on an international number-based grading scale of 1-8. The numbers correspond to scores
on specific IB MYP rubrics which you can find on our website. Unfortunately, Infinite Campus isn’t set up on a 1-8
scale, but rather a % scale. At this point, Infinite Campus still calculates a 4/8 as a 50% but this isn’t accurate. The
“4” is only meant to describe a list of skills on a rubric that a student can do and is not meant to be interpreted as a
50%. We are working on educating parents to ignore the % when it refers to an MYP grade.

How is the MYP grading different?
IB MYP rubrics are skill-based and are different for each subject area (math, science, etc). The same rubrics are used
in all years of the program so that teachers, parents, and students can see growth in specific IB skills over time. As the
program grows, it will be valuable to see a student’s MYP scores from Vaughn and Wooster during grades 7th, 8th, 9th
and 10th. This will allow us to analyze which skills require more practice or which are a strength. It will help us to
encourage more students to try an IBDP course in a subject which they continuously scored well in MYP. If your
student is planning on taking IBDP or IBCP classes their 11th and 12th grade year, similar grading rubrics and numerical grading scales are used. This is great information for them to see their progress in the skills necessary to be successful in those classes.

Will all students receive an MYP grade?
Nearly all students will receive an MYP grade in their 9th and 10th grade courses. This includes English, Language,
Social Studies, Science, Math, Art, PE and Technology classes.

IB MYP Coordinator

The Wooster High School leadership students are hard at work this summer planning many great activities
for our students during the 2016-17 school year. This year’s theme is “Decades”
We have many clubs, sports, and co-curricular activities such as band, theater, ROTC, journalism and
yearbook to name a few, so there are lots of ways to get involved. Students do better academically -- and
they have a lot more fun -- when they are involved in school activities. Plan to pick one (or two or three…)
and go for it!
