To assist St. Augustine in administering to the sick we are asking your
cooperation when submitting names for the Prayers of the Faithful and
names to be added to the bulletin listing of the sick. The office staff will
be requesting some details that will help determine the need for a clerical
visit or assistance through a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound. The
bulletin listing of the sick will be grouped bi-weekly so that we all can be
aware of those newly added to the listing. The bulletin will maintain the
listings for three months unless otherwise specified to be listed
indefinitely. After three months names can be added once again if not
otherwise listed as indefinite. Thank you for your assistance and
cooperation.

ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Three: Equipping the Parish
REFLECTION
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich,
one's life does not consist of possessions." This isn't a message that
gets much advertising. On the contrary, just about every advertised
message we hear comes from someone who wants to make money
by selling us possessions. The message we hear loud and clear on
television or Internet ads or on highway billboards or the back cover
of magazines is that we need this product or that service in order to
be happy. Professional marketers are in the business of creating a
supposed need and then promising to fill it with their product. In
today's culture, it's hard to remember that life isn't about possessions.
But in this Gospel, Jesus reminds us that there is more to life than
having "so many good things stored up for many years." All of this
stuff-be it clothes, devices, equipment, decorations, entertainment
centers, or anything else-does no lasting good if and when "this
night your life will be demanded of you." Unlike the fool who
spends all of his time, energy, and money building larger barns, we
should focus our resources on becoming "rich in what matters to
God."
This means cultivating virtue instead of vice. It means sharing
our money with those in need instead of hoarding it out of selfish
greed. The call is a challenging one, and countercultural too. But
Jesus never said that the Christian way was the way of the world. As
St. Paul instructs us in today's epistle, "Put to death, then, the parts
of you that are earthly." Instead of falling for the marketers' messages, may we have the wisdom to store up our treasure in heaven.
Year of Mercy: Forgiveness is a decision not a feeling.
Baptism Parent Preparation Class Reminder: Summer time class
(2-part) will be held on July 24 and July 31 (this is a slight change) from
12:15-2:15pm in PC 1-2 for Class 1 and PC 3 for Class 2. Please contact
the Parish Office (Wanda Alvarado at Extension 1110) as soon as
possible to register for this program.
Adult Confirmation
If you are an adult Catholic desiring the Sacrament of Confirmation,
please contact Angy Corrigan (ext. 1117) at the parish office for general
information.
Interested in the Catholic Faith?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process offers the opportunity to
begin inquiry into the teachings and the practice of Catholicism. The program offers varied paths for individuals who are unbaptized, those baptized
in another Christian faith tradition, or baptized Catholics who have limited
upbringing in the Church.
Questions are welcome, dialogue is encouraged, prayer and support are
integral, and very individual spiritual journeys are the norm. Just curious? Just wondering? Really interested? A bit nervous? Married/engaged to
a Catholic and/or children in the faith and in need of information? Attending
Mass (perhaps for years!) and feeling awkward in stepping forward? Know
a little and thinking it’s all a bit mysterious?
For further details, and registration, contact Mary Anne Fighera at 2756701 or Kathy Jones at 748-5587.
EveryWoman The EveryWoman book group will resume meeting on
the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 6:30pm beginning on September 7th.
Please contact the office if you are interested.
WINGS’ (Women In God’s Spirit)— WINGS will resume on
Wednesday September 7th at 9:45am in the church hall. We will have
registration on August 20th & 21st and August 27th & 28th , after all
masses - Saturday 5:30pm, Sunday 8:30am and 11:15pm .
Also, registration will be done on Sept 7. All women are welcome!
Please contact Sharon Harrison at 804-683-7199.

DEACON CORNER: (BY DEACON AL)
In this election year the question has been asked about clergy. Canon Law (285) directs that “clerics are to refrain completely from all
those things which are unbecoming to their state, according to the
prescripts of particular law.” The canon continues in §3: “Clerics are
forbidden to assume public offices which entail a participation in the
exercise of civil power,” and §4 forbids clerics from “secular offices
which entail an obligation of rendering accounts…” Permanent
deacons, although clerics, may participate in political life to a degree
not permitted other clerics under the law. However, permanent deacons are required by particular law in the United States to obtain the
prior written permission of their diocesan bishop to do so. The National Directory on the Formation, Ministry and Life of Permanent
Deacons in the United States states (#91): "A permanent deacon
may not present his name for election to any public office or in any
other general election, or accept a nomination or an appointment to
public office, without the prior written permission of the diocesan
bishop. A permanent deacon may not actively and publicly participate in another’s political campaign without the prior written permission of the diocesan bishop.” Today, when political support is
often reflected through the social media, deacons need to be careful
and aware of how their opinions stated via these media may be
viewed as active participation in someone’s political campaign.
Children’s Liturgy “We need your help!” We now need many people
to help with this very rewarding Ministry. It is a once a month commitment. You work in pairs and you do not have to go to another Mass.
Training is provided and is very easy. Parents, teens, young adults why
not go out with the children and see how easy it really is to share the
Word with our children of St. Augustine. Contact the church office if you
can help.
All young adults (ages 18-30) ar e invited to join us for a ser ies of talks
at Saint Mary Church (9505 Gayton Road, Henrico) starting on July 27th.
The goal of this series is to explore the universal call to live a holy life in
Christ. Each week, the speakers will share how they have said “yes” to a
variety of vocations including the calls to marriage, parenthood, priesthood, and celibacy. Ordinary Holiness will begin with dinner at 7:00 pm,
followed by the presentation from 7:30-9:00 pm. This series is sponsored
by the Office for Evangelization and Saint Mary Parish.

PARISH LIFE
The St. Augustine Spanish Festival is just around the corner. This year the Festival will be August 11th through August 14th. This is a church and community event and we
encourage everyone to be a part of it. Specifically, we need
coordinators and volunteers for various tasks: cashiers,
money collectors, security, parking, clean up, vendor table
coordinator, food preparers, and people to staff the information booth.
We need your help! There will be carnival rides, vendor tables, and lots
of Spanish and carnival-type food. Your participation is needed to
make this festival a great event. Please contact Wanda at 804-275-7962
to volunteer and obtain more information.
THERE WILL BE A HEALING MASS IN ENGLISH ON
TUESDAY, AUGUST 16TH AT 7PM
REMEMBERING THE SICK:
Each week we explicitly name thirty or more who have requested our
prayers. Often the people improve with their illness yet remain as a part
of the Prayers of the Faithful. There are situations where the person has
passed away and yet remains as one of the sick. There are those who we
should be praying for but the person elects to keep their illness personal
and private. Overall management of the formal prayer for the sick as a
part of the Prayers for the Faithful is difficult. Beginning in August we
will continue to pray for all those who have asked our prayers with only
mentioning those newly added during the previous two weeks. All others
will be included in a general inclusion of “We pray for all those included
on our sick list, especially for……..” We appreciate your understanding
and cooperation. We are investigating the use of a “Special Intention
Book” as a part of the Prayers of the Faithful. Please provide any feedback to the Worship committee via Deacon Al.
PARISH FYI
The “Graced By God” conference is coming up the last weekend in
August. We encourage all catechists; children, youth, adult, and especially anyone who is new to the ministry; to attend this wonderful opportunity to hear a national speaker. This presentation is geared toward
the catechists to help them bring renewed excitement and “new eyes” to
their classes. The same presentation is being offered twice, once on
Friday evening, August 26th at St. Edward - south of the river, and again
on Saturday morning, August 27th at St. Mary - north of the river. Information on how to register is on the back of the flyer located in the
Information Center.

¿Has pensado en ello?
