ISBN is International Standard Book Number, a unique code that can be assigned to a book.
UBN: Universal Book Number
UABN: Universal Agency for Book Number; officially assigns and regulates legitimate UBN.
Universal Agency for Book Number is responsible for the collection, description, preservation
and accessibility of UBN. The UABN also serves as a development centre for the literature and
library sector and promotes strong cooperation in the field, on not for profit status.
Superiority of UBN over ISBN
Geneva Convention rules that UBN would take over ISBN system. However, both numbering
systems for identification of books would be in practical use, but UBN would be preferred over
ISBN in all over the world. UBN is most advanced system for identification of books compared
to ISBN.
Portability of UBN
Authors/ Self Publishers/ Publishers may sell/ resale unutilized UBN upon notifying UABN.
UBN can also be sold / purchased in a block. Unutilized UBN can also be sold within/ beyond
the countries, different publishers/ authors and to a book in different languages. If title of a book
is changed in future, it needs to be assigned new UBN. UBN can also be purchased in reserve for
further use/ a book being planned to edit/ publish. UBN does not expire. UBN can also be
demanded for a book, which is already having / not having an ISSN number.
If you are applying for ISBN / UBN on behalf of a company or organization, including self
publishers it does not matter in which country your company or organization is formally
registered (e.g. for legal or tax registration purposes), it is the location where your company or
organization carries out its business and operates from that is the important criterion. (If you
have more than one site, possibly in more than one country, then UBNs should be obtained from
[email protected]
It does not matter in which language your publications will be published or in which country
your publications will be printed, manufactured, marketed or sold. Single UBN costs US$ 100
only. Multiple UBNs can be availed if needed accordingly. Please find below Performa and
submit it online by mail to [email protected]
