FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Weekly Message
The Mission of the Disciple
Jesus sent seventy-two of his followers to preach the message in the towns he himself would
later visit. Some scripture texts put this number as seventy. Seventy or seventy-two is symbolic
for the Jews. It was the number of the elders who were chosen to help Moses with the task of
leading and directing the people in the wilderness (Numbers 11:16, 17, 24, 25). It was the number of the Sanhedrin, the supreme council of the Jews. It was also the number of the nations of
the world (Gen. 10:2-31). St. Luke’s use of this number as the number of those who went out to
speak about Jesus brings the universal mission of the Church into the ministry of Jesus.
In sending out his followers, Jesus knew that he cannot do everything by himself. These individuals were not perfect before he called them, but they were willing to use their gifts and talents for the gospel. Jesus told them not
to depend on themselves or what they had but rather on God. He asked them not to take anything with them but
depend on the providence of God. He did not want them to be cluttered up with material things, and the message
was so urgent that they need not greet anyone on the way so that they remained focused on their mission.
The disciples came back rejoicing that the devil obeyed them and that they had made some converts. Jesus reminded them that their greatest source of joy should be that they have their names written in the book of life.
Their success was to be measured by what God has done for them and what God is doing through them.
The universal mission of Christ is not yet complete. Christ still needs the help of many disciples today. He needs
you and he needs me to preach in “places he will later visit.” He wants us to bring his message of justice, peace
and equality, of life, love and responsibility to the marketplace, into politics and every sphere of our lives. We
cannot do this faithfully if we allow our comfort to dictate what we say or do. We cannot do this when we entangle ourselves with many things in life. The disciples were pleasantly surprised that demons fell before them when
they used the name of Jesus. We, too, will be pleasantly surprised at what God can do through us if we allow him
to use us.
Jesus told his disciples to be his ambassadors of peace. Their first words were to be: “Peace to this house.” This
peace is what we are also called to share with those that we meet. In fact, at Mass, the priest extends the peace of
Christ to us as he says: “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” Later on, he invites us to share that peace
with those around us. It is quite easy to notice how warm people are to others during the exchange of peace.
There are times when I also sense some tension among some persons and even family members in the way they
exchange the sign of peace. If we cannot warmly extend this peace in the church, one can only imagine how much
more difficult it will be outside the church. At the dismissal, the deacon or priest says: “Go in peace, glorifying the
Lord by your life.” This means that we are to take the peace we have received from the church to our homes,
workplaces and everywhere we go.
This Fourth of July, we celebrate the 240th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. We
thank God for the vision of our founding fathers as people celebrate with parades, fireworks, barbecue and all. In
last week’s second reading, St. Paul urged the Galatians: “For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not
submit again to the yoke of slavery.” Let us soberly reflect on ways in which we abuse the freedom of others, especially how our religious liberty is being threatened by some laws of our land today. We pray that we, the
Church, will stand firm in the midst of these threats against the faith, not only in the United States, but around
the world. Happy Independence Day!

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to “call down fire from heaven” (Luke 9:54–55) on an unwelcoming
town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10–11), showing us
how to be Jesus’s “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today’s first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So,
going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke’s image
for Eucharist), and Jesus’s healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus, Jesus bids us proclaim the kingdom of God by showing what God’s kingdom looks like in action. “Go, preach the Gospel,” Pope Francis’s saintly namesake of
Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, “and when necessary, use words!”

will be published in the Sunday bulletin. A donation of $75 will help

Word of Life
“The threats to religious freedom are more
subtle (in the West); many people don’t even perceive
them ...Whereas in other parts of the world…it’s
bloody, violent, overt, but in both cases, it’s a denial
of the rights of conscience; it’s a denial of the fundamental freedom to relate to one’s own God.”

PRAYER WARRIORS NEEDED FOR THE 1 CHURCH
1 DAY PRAYER VIGIL PROGRAM
This program provides prayer for our community
and the communities around us 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. Think of it as a canopy or umbrella of continuous prayer that protects us from evil
and temptations. KSBJ Radio is the program sponsor, and the Humble, Kingwood, and Atascocita
areas are the pilot cities for this program which is
rapidly expanding to many other cities. Eventually,
it is hoped to have our entire nation and, indeed,
the entire world covered with continuous prayer.
This program can only be successful if two major
points are observed:
1. Churches of all denominations and faiths must
unite in a common cause in prayer. So far, we
have 38 churches participating in the Kingwood, Humble, and Atascocita area.
2. Prayer warriors must keep their commitment to
pray during their assigned hour and must do
their very best to pray the intentions distributed
to them while praying for an entire hour. Satan
will find and take advantage of any hour that is
not prayed to disrupt and potentially cause our
“umbrella” to fail. We can only be as strong as
our weakest link, and each of us is a link in the
chain of continuous prayer.
Many of you already know the power of prayer
and find it easy and in fact find renew faith during
prayer. The Rosary, Adoration, Novenas, and the
like are examples of prayer times and are easily
adapted when praying the 1 Church 1 Day
intentions.
Just one hour a month from every member of our
dedicated and committed team of prayer warriors
is all that is required for this program. Each
Church has been assigned a specific day for prayer. St. Mary Magdalene has the 3rd Friday of every
month for our 24-hour period.
Please consider if you are willing and able to join
the St. Mary 1 Church 1 Day prayer warriors in
this incredibly challenging and rewarding program. Our Lady has said that prayer can save the
world, so let us begin by saving one community at
a time by each of us praying for one of the hours
during our 3rd Friday 24-hour vigil every month!

beach on which thousands and thousands of starfish have
washed ashore. Further along, he sees an old man, walking
slowly and stopping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean. “Why are
you throwing starfish into the ocean?” he asked. “Because
the sun is up and the tide is going out, and if I don’t throw
them into the water, they will die.” “But, old man, don’t
you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all
along it! You can’t possibly save them all. You can’t even if
you work all day; your efforts won’t make any difference at
all.” The old man listened calmly, then bent down to pick
up another starfish and threw it into the sea. “It made a difference to that one.”
In 2015, 1-7 Texas households were food insecure, more than
any other state except for California. According to the report, 87% of food insecure Americans lived in households
earning less than 185% of the federal poverty line, and the
number of children who are at-risk of hunger increased by
18,630 in southeast Texas (Houston Food Bank Statistics).
The number of food insecure children grew from last year’s
24.7% to 26%. Texas has the third highest rate of food insecurity in the country at 18.5%, behind Arkansas and Mississippi.
At the center of the Church’s social teaching is the life, dignity, and rights of the human person. “We are called in a
very special way to serve the poor and vulnerable, to bring
good news to the poor, bring liberty to the captives, new
sight to the blind, and set the downtrodden
free” (Communities of Salt and Light). This is why the ministries of Magdalene House, Prison Ministry, Hospital Ministry,
Homebound Ministry, Respect Life Ministry, Blood Drive,
Bereavement Ministry, Nursing Home Ministry, Alcohol and
Drug Abuse, Prayer Chain Ministry, Prayer Quilt Ministry,
and Home Again Ministry are essential in overcoming the
adversities of the poor and vulnerable.

Opportunity for Young Adult Catholics to
Travel to Rome and Assisi
Shannon Deitz of St. Martha’s parish in Porter is or‐
ganizing a young adult Catholic travel program to
Assisi, Florence, and Rome in May of 2017 and invites
you to join her and Fr. Richard McNeillie. This is a
program that weaves together visits to places of great
historical and religious significance with opportuni‐
ties to enjoy the warm hospitality, food, and culture
of the Italians. We will walk in the footsteps of earlier
generations of Christians who have traveled to Rome
to visit the tombs of the great apostles Peter and Paul,
who have wandered through the mystical streets of
Assisi to learn from St. Francis and St. Clare, and who
journeyed to Florence to see the masterpieces of Mi‐
chelangelo, Brunelleschi, and other Renaissance vi‐
sionary artists.
Our accommodations are centrally located so that
during the built‐in free time, we will have a chance to
explore the piazzas, cafés, shops, and restaurants that
make Italy such a satisfying destination. Join us as we
travel across borders to make new friends, connect
with our faith heritage, and learn from the men and
women who have made Rome, Florence, and Assisi
the great art and cultural capitals of the world.

Children’s News and Adult Faith Formation
From The Ultimate Catholic Quiz by Karl Keating (Ignatius Press; Ignatius.com)
(Reprinted with permission)
Can you correctly answer this question?
Q: The Consecration of the Eucharist (a) can be performed by a Catholic priest or by a priest of an
Eastern Orthodox Church; (b) can be performed by a Catholic priest only if he celebrates Mass with at
least two witnesses; (c) can be performed by Catholic priests and Anglican priests if they have the proper intention and pronounce the correct words; (d) can be performed by deacons and specially commissioned laypersons in extraordinary circumstances; (e) none of the above.
Summer Study: Our two-week summer intensive CCE program just concluded. 432 children received a year’s
worth of catechism in those two weeks. Whew! Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who made it possible.
We could not have helped these children without you!
Your church needs you!: Sign up as a new recruit, or re-up your service as a catechist. The only way we can offer
the CCE classes needed by so many families in our parish is through the generous stewardship of our adult catechists.
You do not have to be a professional teacher to be a catechist. All you need is a love of the Catholic faith and a
heart for children. Please contact Mike or Ginger for additional information about serving as a catechist.
Reaching Ginger: If you need to reach Ginger, our Coordinator of Formation for Adults and Children, you can
email her at: [email protected] or you can call her at (281) 446-8211, extension 249.
The answer is (a). The Eastern Orthodox Churches have the seven sacraments and therefore a real priesthood; Anglican orders are not valid.
It takes a real priest to confect the Real Presence; therefore, neither deacons nor laypersons nor Anglicans can consecrate the Eucharist. A
priest may celebrate Mass by himself; the validity of Mass does not depend upon witnesses.

Summer Reading Summer is a great time for reading, whether it’s your favorite book or

adult “summer reading.”
Religious Freedom is Under Stress
Just last summer—as relevant now as then—Archbishop Thomas Wenski gave a stirring homily on
the stress which religious freedom is undergoing.
75% of Religious Persecution is Against Christians
U.K. Cardinal Keith O'Brien of Edinburgh recently described persecution of Christians as "perhaps the biggest human
rights scandal of our generation."
A Global Problem: Anti-Christian Harassment Around the World
As of March 2015, the Catholic News Agency reports that Christian groups lead the world in a sobering statistic: they
suffer harassment in more countries than any other religious group.
Look up these articles, or send me an email and I will send you links to them: [email protected]

We are asking all of our parishioners to please pray that we will find and train the people we need to minister to the people of our
parish. We need team members to help us with people who want to become Catholic; we need sponsors, CCE teachers, youth
workers and others who will help us run our programs. Many people need our care, our love and support. There are some critical needs we need to fill by August. Please consider what you can do to help us. Contact me or Mike Smith if you would like to
serve. Thank you, and may God send us his help through people like you! — Ivana

A Prayer for Our Country for Independence Day 2016
Ivana T. Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
It is ever more real to us how the present state of affairs in our country affects all of us. Gritty
questions about the economy, immigration, racism, terrorist attacks, so-called same-sex
“marriage” and other burning issues fill the news media and talk shows daily. Even the TV
commercials and advertisements are imbued with these themes. There is mounting concern
about the future, and everyone is wondering just what the new presidential election will
bring. As Christians, we respond to this crisis in the same way as we do in all of life’s circumstances—we respond with faith. In all things, we believe that there is a power greater
than ourselves and that God has clearly and definitively demonstrated his love and mercy. Even in dire circumstances, we believe in God’s love and care for us. We are called to take courage because Christ has
“overcome the world” (John 16:33) and not to despair but to “encourage one another “(1 Thessalonians 5:11).
It seems fitting that as we have just completed the solemn celebration of the Easter season, in which hope is
a key theme, that we face with hope the challenges that now face us socially and economically.
Hope is often expressed through art, music and poetry. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), an American poet, wrote a poem during the American Civil War entitled Christmas Bells, later set to music in a song
now known as I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. In the poem, Longfellow looks at the destruction being
caused by a country torn apart by war and strife; in a moment of despair, he laments of ever finding peace on
earth. In part, it reads:
I HEARD the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."
This song, like all inspirational songs, ends with a
note of hope. We must put our faith in God and believe that God is truly alive and that “wrong shall fail;
right will prevail.” Let us, then, pray for ourselves
and our country as we grapple with important
moral issues facing our nation today, that wrong
shall fail and right prevail.
“God our Father, we come to you today and ask you to
bless and protect the people of the United States of America. We join in prayer to celebrate our homeland and
surrender its destiny to you.
We give you thanks for those who founded this great nation. May the dreams of our forefathers be realized in us,
that we might live in honesty and integrity with our
neighbors. We pray that bigotry, racism and intolerance
be removed from our hearts. May violence and hatred
find no fertile ground in which to grow here. May our
minds be filled with your unconditional love and acceptance of all people.
May we learn from our mistakes, so that the people who
have suffered and died because of them shall not have
died in vain.
We ask you to strengthen and guide our leaders and our
military, especially those men and women of the armed
forces who are from within our own families. We pray for
those who would seek to harm us personally and for
those who harm innocents in other places. Give us peace
during these troubled economic times and grant special
grace to our President, Barack Obama, who is entrusted
with the leadership of our nation, and to those who will
come after him.
May this country be once again a light to the nations of
hope and goodness, peace and freedom. Rekindle in us
the spirit of truth in our hearts. We trust that you, Almighty God, hear and answer our prayers according to
your most holy and true will. Amen.”
Prayer written by Ivana Meshell, inspired by the writings of Rutherford Lawson, Brian Stinecipher & Marianne Williamson.

a algunas personas.
Si no podemos amablemente ofrecer

Misericordia. Como los primeros discípulos, somos enviados
no a proclamarnos nosotros, sino a Jesús.
hoy, nuestro consuelo, nuestra madre atenta y amorosa
