She said that her pastor growing up told her that as long as you got to Mass before the Gospel and did not leave until the priest had received communion one fulfilled the duty to attend Mass. Part of the problem of answering this question is akin to answering a young man who asks, “How little can I spend on a date for it to count as a date?” Asking that question is obviously a plea to the minimalistic attitude toward the other. We understand why that type of question makes the date all about oneself, not the one being asked out. “So, what’s the answer?” Actually, there is no official rule. Our Church is rather lenient because life can always throw curve balls; car won’t start, child gets sick, I over sleep [from a hangover does not count], etc. The real question is, “Why?” Am I being careless, or lazy, or irreverent, or proud, etc.? We are invited by the Lord to be holy and there is no better help here on earth than coming together with my faith family and sharing the family meal of the Eucharist. Each of us can make sure that we are not the reason my family is late. I should get up and get ready without being told seven times. I can help with younger brothers and sisters. I can stop complaining about going to Mass and start paying attention to the one I am going to Mass to adore. We need to stop using the weakness of others to bolster our own weakness; “Well so and so doesn’t go to Mass either!” I tried this once on my dad and he gave me his favorite answer, “So?” After all these years, I still have not come up with a good answer. I pressed him for an explanation and he replied that we are a family and this is what we do — can’t argue with that. This person pressed me for a more specific answer. I would say that if we came in after the consecration of the Mass we probably should wait and not receive communion at that Mass but go to the next Mass (if we’re talking about Sunday or Holy Day Mass). Since weekday Mass is not obligatory we could receive communion. “Are there any official rules about how to dress for Mass?” “Yes,” and “No,” is the best answer. To understand the answer we should once again examine why we go to Mass. We attend Mass to show respect, honor, adoration, humility, and recognize in our lives our creator. This does NOT mean we have to wear the absolute best outfit we have. Going to Mass is different from going to prom or a wedding. On the other hand, we aren’t going to the beach either. I think most would agree that swim trunks or a bikini are not proper clothes for Mass. That’s the easy part. Is anything we wear OK, is a more difficult question. First, whatever we wear ought to be modest, respectful, clean, etc. We ought not to wear clothes just to show off and prove we could care less. We should all avoid being too casual with the things of God. No one reading this would go before a judge about a simple traffic ticket dressed too casually. God Our Father deserves at least as much respect as the earthly judge. Sunday Mass is of much higher rank than a weekday Mass. Sometimes we find ourselves with a few extra minutes and we drop in for Mass. Great! We may not be dressed as neatly as on Sunday, but come anyway. On Sunday, since we know after every Saturday comes a Sunday, we can plan and work to make it very special by the way we pay attention to time, get dressed up a bit, work a bit harder to be loving to our brothers and sisters, etc. After all, it is Love’s day for loving him and one another. The top five happiest professions, according to University of Chicago researchers, include (numbers 5 through 2), special ed teachers, authors, physical therapists, and firefighters. Who’s number 1? The clergy! What would it be like to make the choice to live a celibate life? Sister Julie, in the blog “A Nun’s Life Ministry,” recalls what her mentor told her when Julie fell in love with someone as she discerned a religious vocation. “If we lose the capacity to fall in love,” the mentor said, then we lose the ability to truly open our hearts to God, to the people with whom we live and minister, with God’s beautiful creation.” Falling in love doesn’t mean, Sister Julie came to understand, that we have to act on it. Catholic priests in Australia discussed their choice with a journalist this way: “It gives me plenty of time to deal with people who come to me for help; more time for my work. It also allows me an intimacy with Jesus in the sense that He is the only one I come to as my ultimate, intimate companion; rather than any non-divine person.” “We discussed celibacy a lot in the seminary. We looked at it not as a giving up, but a giving for. Pray for Vocations! Brought to you by the SVDP Vocations Committee. Last week we began a long stretch of Ordinary Time that will bring us to late November. Saint Paul tells us today that those who are baptized “have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:27). This scripture is echoed in the Church’s baptism ritual when we sing, “You have put on Christ, in him you have been baptized.” This message is inspiring and sobering at the same time, for in today’s Gospel, we get to the heart of what it means to be clothed in Christ. The Lord tells us, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). For the next twenty-two weeks we are called to take up the cross and, with Saint Luke as our guide, fol- Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time; Father’s Day; Julian Calendar Pentecost Monday: Summer begins Tuesday: St. Aloysius Gonzaga Wednesday: St. Paulinus of Nola; Ss. Gospel — Peter proclaims Jesus as the Christ; Jesus speaks of his great suffering to come (Luke 9:18-24). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s almost midsummer day! One of the great hidden treasures of our liturgical calendar occurs this week. There are only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist on June 24. Friday’s date is anchored by the Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child. We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve. There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for Christmas, so does the abundance of light at midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture. As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched zones of northern Europe see people staying up all night, kindling “St. John’s Fires” in the long summer twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St. Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor illuminations in France. You may be most interested in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s own city. People there will leap into the sea between midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach this week and plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition! Lecturas de hoy: Zacarías 12:10–11; 13:1; Salmo 63:2–6, 8–9; Gálatas 3:26–29; Lucas 9:18–24 Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J. S.
