Fr Eric's Departure
With praise and thanksgiving to Almighty God, I wish to
thank Archbishop John Joseph Myers for having made
me the next Pastor of Sacred Heart Church in North
Bergen, New Jersey, effective, July 1st. I will always have
much love for St. Vincent de Paul Church in Bayonne,
where I met some of the loveliest people and had the
most amazing support staff! Although I will miss the
good people of Bayonne, I also look forward to beginning
a new chapter in my life and embracing a new pastoral
assignment. Please pray for me and at the same time, be
assured of my prayers for all of you! Blessed be God forever! —Fr Eric Fr. Eric has not stated yet when his final mass
this month will be. No replacement has been named so far.

grown butterflies free in the school garden. The
second graders cared for and hatched chick eggs in
their classroom. The baby chicks were given a new
home on a farm.
ASCA’s Annual Art Show was held on May, 25. The
artwork of students in all grades was displayed
throughout the hallway “galleries” for all to appreciate and enjoy. Student Council elections were
held for Executive Board offices. Our newly elected

2016-2017 Religious Education Registration
Re-registrations and new registrations for the 2016/2017 Religious Education Program is open now
through Thursday, September 8th. All children presently registered will receive a letter and registration form (one registration form per child in the family). Registration forms must be completed for
all children attending our program. As the letter states, all four (4) Religious Education Programs in
Bayonne have been unified. If you would like your child to begin preparation for First Communion,
please be aware that it is a two (2) year program beginning in First Grade. If your child is new to
our program, a copy of his/her Baptismal Certificate must be provided either upon registration or
after, if he/she was not baptized at St. Vincent de Paul. For additional information and registration
forms, please contact Christine Smith at [email protected]. Thank you in advance!
Summer Mode
Summer seems to have finally reached us. For everyone Summer is a great time to take a step back
and reflect on our spirituality, try to breathe the
warm air, contemplate a starry sky or a sunrise
over the ocean and feel God's presence among us.
We encourage you to use those coming months
to deepen your relationship with God. Particularly,
we remind you that Mass attendance remains the
backbone of your spiritual life.
For those of you lucky enough to escape at the
weekend to shore houses or remote resorts, Summer means you will not be joining us at St Vincent
de Paul every week but you can find local Mass
times online at masstimes.org. Importantly, even if
you are away, you remain responsible for the stewardship of our parish simply because parish bills do
not take a vacation.
There are three ways you can accomplish this:
„„ enroll into our electronic donations system
so your offering will continue to be processed
in your absence — contact the parish office
for details;
„„ Send your envelope with your donation.
Note that you should not send cash, but
checks can be sent to the parish;
„„ "Make up" for missed collections by giving
your offering before you leave or after you are
back.
Supporting your parish is an important responsibility and we count on you to maintain the sustainability of our parish. In the long run, it is our ability
to pay our bill that ensures the parish will continue
to exist. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Alzheimer Information event — Alzheimer’s
New Jersey will be offering a local education program

disease or other form of dementia. Safety Considerations in Alzheimer’s Disease will be offered at the Bayonne Library on Thursday, June 23, 2016 from 7:00pm
– 8:00pm. Alzheimer’s disease causes progressive
changes in abilities and judgement. It is important for
family caregivers to anticipate potential safety risks
and take proactive steps to address the safety needs
of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease. This program
provides practical tips on fall prevention, home and
medication safety, driving concerns, reducing the risk
of wandering, and preparing for emergencies. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is
required. For more information or to register, individuals can call our Helpline at 1.888.280.6055.

rape, incest, or other forms of traumatic violation in
childhood, adolescence or as an adult. It is also suitable for those who have suffered abuse by a member
of the clergy. This model of care provides therapy for
the soul. We encourage anyone in need of healing to
participate in this worthwhile program. If you have any

A Sinful Woman
Anoints Jesus' Feet
Before Lent began we were reading Luke's version
of the Sermon on the Mount, which is known as
the Sermon on the Plain. Today's Gospel passage is
taken from the following chapter of Luke's Gospel.
The concern of this chapter, as well as in Chapters
8 and 9, is Jesus' identity as the Messiah, one who
is greater than a prophet. Throughout the chapter Jesus has been performing miracles similar
to those done by Old Testament prophets. When
John the Baptist sent some of his disciples to Jesus to ask who he was, Jesus listed the miracles
they had seen him perform and then compared
himself with John the Baptist to show that he was
greater than John.
In today's Gospel Jesus sits down to eat a meal at
the house of Simon, a Pharisee. A sinful woman
approaches him, falls to her knees, wets his feet
with her tears, dries them with her hair, and then
anoints them with oil. A similar scene occurs in
the other three Gospels, but in those versions the
anointing takes place in Bethany, near Jerusalem,
before Passover. In the other three Gospels, this
anointing is related to his being proclaimed king
by the crowds when he entered Jerusalem. It also
related to his being anointed as a preparation for
his burial. In Luke the anointing takes place north,
in Galilee, early in his ministry.
Simon the Pharisee challenges Jesus, telling him
that a prophet would surely know that a sinful
person was touching him. Jesus responds by telling a story about the true nature of forgiveness.
Two men owe money. One owes an amount that
would equal 500 days' wages. The other owes 50
days' wages. Yet the moneylender forgives the
debt of both when they ask him. Simon is forced
to admit that the one who had the bigger debt
canceled probably loves the moneylender more.
After telling the story, Jesus turns to the woman and tells her that her sins are forgiven. In this
scene we see that Jesus does more than heal physical ailments, as prophets of the past had done.
He also forgives sins. This leaves the crowd to ask,
“Who is this who even forgives sins?” This question
is answered in Chapter 9 by Peter when he professes that Jesus is the Messiah and at the Transfiguration when the voice from heaven declares, “This is
my chosen Son.”
Today's reading ends with the first three verses
of Chapter 8. At first they may seem unconnected
to the scene that has come before. But they serve
to show Jesus' ministry beginning to move from
one town and village to another, proclaiming the
Kingdom of God, until he eventually arrives in Jerusalem. He is accompanied not just by the Twelve
but by a group of women, three of whom Luke
names. It is significant that they are linked with
the Twelve, and they seem to be equally important to Jesus' ministry. It is the women who provide
for the needs of these travelers out of their own
resources. Although in Palestinian society women
had a much lesser role than men, in Luke's Gospel
they are shown as equals.
OUR PARISH
WITNESS TO FREEDOM
St. Maximilian
Kolbe
“No one in the world can change Truth.
What we can do and should do is to seek truth
and to serve it when we have found it.”
The 20th century has been called the Century of
Martyrs. Some historians estimate that more people
died for their faith in the 20th century than the previous nineteen centuries combined. The 20th century saw a massive amount of bloodshed from people
who died because of their faith. One of the most
dramatic examples of these martyrs is Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan priest who offered
his life in the Auschwitz death camp in exchange for
the life of another man, a husband and father.
Maximilian Kolbe saw the evil of both the Nazi fascism invading Poland from the west and communism invading Poland from the east. The squeezing
of the Polish people was partly a military effort, but
perhaps more profoundly, it was an attempt to drain
Poland of its culture, which was decidedly Catholic.
Totalitarian regimes cannot tolerate an authoritative voice other than the state. In response to the
attack on the very life of the Polish faithful, Maximilian Kolbe invested his time and energy into creating a counter voice through print media and the
formation of priests. The saint knew that what faced
Poland and the western world was first and foremost a spiritual battle and thus needed a spiritual
response. In establishing various newspapers and
houses of formation, Maximilian Kolbe heroically
and courageously stood up to the secular powers of
his time. His work showed that the political powers
may gain control of civil institutions, but they would
never and could never gain control of the human
spirit.
This great priest must have known he risked his
life, but it was a risk he was willing to take in order
to witness to the true dignity of the human person.
In the end, he did give up his life when he offered to
take the place of a father and husband who was to
be executed at Auschwitz. In his life and death, Fr.
Kolbe achieved victory over the lies of the totalitarian movements that tried to redefine God’s created
order. Totalitarian ideologies may appear strong
temporarily, but the martyr reveals that the human
spirit, strengthened by God’s grace, is stronger.
St. Maximilian Kolbe, pray for us!
NUESTRA IGLESIA
Pero A Quien Poco Se Le Perdona, Poco Ama.
ado habían hecho. Él también perdona
pecados. Esto deja a la gente a preguntar:
"¿Quién es éste, que también perdona
pecados?"
finalmente llega a Jerusalén.
nombre”, dijo.
“Puedo orar para que el otro sea
santo, pero el camino debe hacerlo
él, no yo. Caminar en la presencia
de Dios, de modo irreprochable. Y
yo usaré hoy algunas palabras que
nos enseñan cómo es la santidad
de cada día, esa santidad –digamostambién anónima. Primero: coraje,
el camino hacia la santidad requiere
valentía”, explicó.
Esperanza
‘No, no, no:
santo’”.
“¡Es así de simple!”, dijo para concluir. “Yo sé que vosotros nunca habláis
mal a espaldas de los otros, ¿verdad?
Pequeñas cosas… Tengo ganas de
criticar al vecino, al compañero de
trabajo: morderse la lengua un poco.
Se hará un poco grande la lengua,
pero vuestro espíritu será más santo
en este camino”.
Por tanto, “el camino de la santidad
es sencillo. No volver atrás, sino ir
siempre adelante. Y con fortaleza”,
terminó.
