Matthew 25:14-30 The Parable of the Talents
Everyone has talents but not everyone uses their talents. In the Parable of the Talents, it appears
that Jesus is stressing the importance of a person using their talents. A talent is useless unless it is
used.
There is no one that has no talents. Some have the talent of helping, some of giving encouragement, others use their personal time at the expense of themselves to help others, yet others help
to financially support the church or help the poor, however there are many who simply bury their
talents. This is part of what is in the Parable of the Talents.

We have to remember and celebrate the fact that God
in His love has given each and every one of us an ability or aptitude that no one else has. Jesus reminds us
today that God expects us to use that special something
to benefit others. All of us are traveling on this relatively little blue ball floating in the universe amid the
stars enroute to a heaven beyond our powers of imagination. Each individual is charged with making the
journey better for the rest of us.
We know that some of us are able to do that for millions of others through the so-called “magic” of our
inventions. Recall the many tributes given recently to
Robin Williams and Joan Rivers. Of course, we don’t
have to reach millions. We are successful in God’s eyes
if we reach but one other.
Our belief in Jesus empowers us for this project. So we
need not fear or be daunted by the challenge of it.
However, there is a “downside” if you will to all this
happy talk of our individual gifts. It is captured in the
sad phrase “could have been.” We are not talking here
about some human prize lost. But just put your name
in front of “could have been” and the words “a saint”
behind that verb and see the potential for a bitter eternity.
Luckily for us all, that sentence does not have to describe us. We are blest to have the time and place right
here and now to change “could have been” to
“became” with a sincere decision to follow Christ’s
plan for our talents, and be a light in the darkness.

First Reading: Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31
More than simple praise for a good wife, the author
wants us to ascribe the compliments to Wisdom, as she
comes “down to earth.” When she does so, she can give
very practical service to all those who accept her.
Second Reading: I Thessalonians 5:1-6
Speculation about the arrival of the “Day of the Lord”
is really not as worthwhile as living each of our days as
true “children of the light.”
Gospel: Matthew 25:14-30, or 25:14-15, 19-21
Jesus describes the lifestyle He favors for all of His disciples, as we “look forward to his second coming”, as
the Third Eucharistic Prayer phrases it. We are to make
responsible use of our gifts. “Talent” was at the time of
Christ a fiscal term, but we translate it now as
“aptitudes or gifts” we have.

In today’s Gospel, (Matthew 25:14-30) we hear the
Parable of the Talents. When I was younger, I didn’t
realize that talents were coins worth a sizable amount of
money in Jesus’ time. Therefore, we need to look at this
Gospel in two ways. Firstly, we must look at the fact that
the master trusted three servants with different amounts
of money. One received 1 talent, another 2, and another
5. The servant with the one talent buried his, while the
other two servants invested theirs to make the master a
profit. To understand the Parable on this level, Jesus is
warning his listeners against sloth that is fueled by envy. The second way to interpret the Gospel is that talents
are talents in the modern sense of the word. Failure to
use our God given talents results in their loss.
Religious Education News: The Religious Education program has a great need for junior high catechists and
substitute catechists. We are also in need of bi-lingual
office help on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-7
PM. Maybe God is calling you to this ministry. Advent is
coming up. Maybe this is the Advent service that God
might be calling you to do. Thank You for considering

Social Concerns - Clothing
The Green House is in need of winter jackets and coats
for men, women, and especially children. Winter hats,
gloves and scarves are greatly appreciated. Winter
clothes are also needed. Please drop them off at the
Green House on Saturdays ONLY from 9:00 am to 11:00
am. Please do not leave items on porch as there will be
no one there to receive them. Please call Barbara

For large coat drive donations please call Barbara
before having the drive so that the date of delivery
can be coordinated. The Green House will be

Social Justice Corner - November 16, 2014
The Lord said: I think thoughts of peace and not of
affliction. Jeremiah 29:11
We are so fortunate to be in the hands of a loving God.
Why is it that so many of us think of God as one who
punishes or brings calamity on the heads of those who
disobey God's rules? Is it because we feel unworthy?
Is it because it's so difficult for us to forgive ourselves
that we think that God needs to afflict us before offering us forgiveness? In the Lord's Prayer Jesus teaches
us to pray “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us.” Those words suggest
that we have already forgiven ourselves. If we are a
forgiving people we never bring violence on the heads
of anyone, including people we consider enemies. We
bring peace rather than affliction.
“There is no hatred or violence in God. The absolute
allowings of all history should make it clear that God
cannot be violent or punitive, or even in control. The
Divine One did not stop the torturing of the Inquisition or the gas chambers of the Holocaust. God somehow uses death, and our own mistakes, even evil itself,
to bring us all to full life. But God does not punish us
with catastrophes or even stop catastrophes. 'Neither
he nor his parents sinned,' Jesus said, 'he was born
blind that the works of God might be displayed in
him' (John 9:3). God's total commitment to love becomes a total commitment to freedom, which means
God had to give up all enforcement and control. God
is clearly not a policeman. This is a huge price for
God and us to pay, which might well be revealed in
the broken body of Jesus itself. But there is no other
way for God to act, for God is love itself (1John 4:8,
16), which seems to be the only kind of power God
uses now, after the original omnipotence of creation

Myth: Spending hours in front of a computer will wreck
your vision.
Reality: Using the computer doesn't hurt your eyes. After
a while, however, you can start to lose focus due to fatigue or eyestrain, which can lead to brow
pain and headaches. You may also blink less
while working at a computer, making your
eyes dry and irritated. To prevent these
symptoms, take regular breaks from the
computer and look at objects far away. Your
monitor should also be at least 18 inches
away from your face.
Myth: Eating carrots can improve your eyesight.
Reality: So it turns out Mom was right about this one —
carrots are good for your eyes, but they aren’t the only
foods that boast vision superpowers. Carotenoids are
also found in spinach, kale, and other colorful vegetables, such as red, orange, and yellow peppers. Dietary
carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein,
and zeaxanthin, provide a number of health benefits,
including a reduced risk for certain cancers and eye
disease, according to a review article published in 2013
in the journal Nutrients. For example, lutein and zeaxanthin, which are found in parsley and egg yolk, have
been linked to a lower risk for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Myth: There’s nothing you can do to prevent vision loss.
Reality: When it comes to protecting your vision, you
are not powerless,. Having good health, which includes
controlling blood pressure and diabetes, eating a
healthy diet, and not smoking, will help protect your
eyes. By controlling all these things, you are protecting
your vision now and in the future. If you have diabetes,
careful management is the best way to prevent vision
loss, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Regular physical activity can also keep your
blood sugar levels in check and help protect your vision.

Building Fund/Capital Campaign Fund
A big THANK YOU to all those who continue to support
our monthly Building/Capital Campaign Fund by making their generous donations. We continue to pay our
monthly mortgage payments of $8,446.86 and now
have only 11 more payments to make totaling
$92,915.46 and will be paid off in August of 2015.
Along with these important loan payments we continue
to provide the proper maintenance and repairs required
to keep our buildings and grounds in pristine condition,
all the while paying very close attention to costs. We are
proud to say that our maintenance costs have been reduced substantially this year over the previous several.
Over and above the day to day maintenance and repairs
there still are plans for several projects that will require
substantial investments. As noted previously, the parking lot and concrete walks are a concern and will need
to be addressed, along with our sound and computer
system and backup power.
Once the mortgage is paid off it will free up funds that
will enable us to make these necessary improvements,
which is why your continued support of the Building/
Capital Campaign Fund is so important. In the meantime we will continue our current maintenance program
to keep the building and grounds safe and in the best
condition.
The Mass Offering Total for November 9: $15,146.74.
Your donations are important; they help Saint Anthony
of Padua continue the good work in the parish and the
community. Please remember the Parish in your Wills
and in your Estate Planning.

XXXIII DOMINGO ORDINARIO (Mateo 25:14-30)
Un mensaje importante para el presente. Debemos tener en
cuenta que estos textos se ubican en el llamado “Discurso
Escatológico” y han propiciado que, con mucha facilidad, se
interpreten como si Mateo estuviera hablando del futuro y
no del presente, del final y no del comienzo. El evangelista ha
colocado un texto sobre la buena marcha de la comunidad
en un discurso escatológico precisamente porque le interesa
dar a entender que lo que dirá a continuación tiene utilidad,
seriedad e importancia para la vida presente. En la cultura
mediterránea cuando algo se desplaza al final es, entre otras
cosas, para enfatizar su seriedad e importancia para la vida
presente.
¿Quién es el servidor fiel prudente? El texto de Mateo aparece profundamente ligado a la parábola de las diez vírgenes, a
la de los talentos y al relato del juicio final. La presentación
de un siervo fiel y prudente y de otro malvado introduce al
lector atento en las actitudes que aparecerán en los textos
posteriores: las diez vírgenes: cinco necios y cinco prudentes;
los servidores a los que les fueron entregados los talentos; el
de cinco y el de dos son catalogados como buenos y fieles, en
cambio el que recibió uno, el que no produjo nada, es presentado como malo perezoso. Por último, se presenta al Hijo
del Hombre separando a las ovejas de los cabritos, los benditos de los malditos. De este modo, parece que solo se puede
resolver la pregunta sobre quien es servidor fiel y prudente a
partir de la parábola de las vírgenes, la de los talentos y del
relato de la venida del Hijo del Hombre.
Pero, ¿Qué significa para Mateo fiel y prudente? El término
fiel aparece, al menos en los evangelios de Mateo y Lucas,
con el significado de ser digno de confianza, cumplidor, responsable. Estamos ante una palabra que enfatiza el desempeño adecuado de alguien, la responsabilidad de estar a la altura de las circunstancias para cumplir lo encomendado. En el
caso del término prudente está detrás el significado de pensar, comprender y ser componente. En Mateo se confirman
estos significados con el matiz de cordura y sensatez en oposición a estupidez de habilidad ante los peligros y de previsión. Fidelidad y prudencia tienen que ver en Mateo, entre
otras cosas con el desempeño competente de una responsabilidad que ha sido confiada.
La parábola de los talentos remarca las características del
ciervo fiel y prudente en la bondad y fidelidad de los dos
siervos que administraron bien los talentos. La capacidad de
aquellos siervos para estar a la altura de las circunstancias
de lo que se les había encomendado los hacía merecedores de
mayor confianza y de participar, cosa sumamente extraordinaria en aquel tiempo y cultura de la alegría (de la vida de la
casa) de su señor. Su acierto estuvo en ser administradores.
El Señor confía en el siervo; sin embargo esto no lo hace dueño de los talentos. Más aun, en la medida en el que el siervo
se comporta como dueño se inutiliza y pone en riesgo lo que
le ha sido confiado. Y es que el ser humano tiene el riesgo,
ante la incapacidad de dar frutos, de buscar pretextos o excusas que a fuerza de enfatizar quiere convertirlas en razones.
