Golden Cobras
Striking Success
Volume 39, Issue 10
Dear Parents:
This has been a wonderful year with numerous students excelling in many areas. National History
Day students participated in the state competition for the performance of “Powerful Women.” The music department performed at a very high level with both Chorus and Orchestra moving on to the state competition. We
are truly Cobras Striking Success.
The other wonderful quality our students demonstrated is that of social awareness. There were many
small efforts made in raising funds by various clubs this year. Our students are truly caring Cobras who want to
make a difference. Our students have raised funds for the Harvest for the Hungry, Alzheimer's patients, the
Davidsonville Wild Life Refuge, and the One Drop Association. Matthew Gasperino, one of our students wrote
this about his participation in the One Drop Quarter Wars: “It only takes one person that cares and it all spreads
from there. One person that dares to make a difference. One person that recognizes it’s unfair for the unfortunate to walk miles away for something we use everyday. One person to stand up and make a difference to give
people a voice that couldn’t even read before. One boy or girl to spread the word to help the poor people who
don’t know how to add so someone who truly cares needs to help save the day. We need to make a difference
so others have a chance to live to more than 10 years old. We humankind can overcome everything 1 drop at a
time. So we all need to stand up, any amount of money can help. All for water and water for all”
We have been blessed with wonderful students who have good hearts as well as keen minds. You send us your
best and they are amazing young adolescence.
Our professional development activity on April 27 celebrated our story and the students provided their
thoughts telling us My year was…, I learned…, a new idea is… The power point created for the teachers reflected ups and downs, and was overwhelmingly positive. They felt supported, that they worked hard, they
made many good friends, and that Central Middle is a “great school that cared about students’ futures”. This is
a large file but I can make it available if anyone wishes to view it.
The volunteer program has been working to support students, teachers, school activities and initiatives. I wish
to publicly thank Kim Barker for her leadership with the overall volunteer program. There were numerous parent
volunteers, who frequently provided services such as AVID tutoring, faculty breakfasts, fundraising events,
picture day help, field trips, office coverage, etc.
We could not have done it without you. In gathering data on volunteers for our annual report
we had 418 volunteers this year. These volunteers served 8040 hours. The data is taken from our sign-in system and does not always reflect those hours parents give outside of school. Thank you everyone for your support..
The PTSA has been very supportive, and I wish to thank the officers for their services to our school
community. Kate Jones, Kim Barker, Stephanie Pierce, Susan Merkel. Thank you to our committee chairs Amy
Richardson, Carla DeWitt, Lisa O’Hagan, Sarah Reimsnider, Lisa Maranto, Pamela Murray, and Debbie Mitutsky who have worked hard on many PTSA events. Please consider joining PTSA and be a part of a great parent team.
In closing, I would like to thank students, parents, and the Central Middle School faculty and staff for
all of their support. It is a privileged to serve such an outstanding community.
Sincerely,
Millie Beall,
Principal

Introduction to French 7th grade students are
expressing personal preferences and actions including the frequency, other participants, and the quality
of those actions with the goal of strengthening their
conversational skills about their personal lives. The last topic will be
comparing and contrasting French and American school systems with
some eye-opening videos! The final exam for this first half of the high
school credit course will be a 4-day skill exam May 27-June 7. Remember,
help is also just a click away at the textbook website at https://

Need extra credit? Keep your eyes and ears open for French opportunities!
Over the summer, students should practice, practice, practice on the
website! Keep those listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills sharp!
And be sure to watch the Tour de France in “juillet”! Live
French!
French 1 8th grade students are shopping, comparing, and evaluating as they
forge ahead toward the end of the year.
The “grand” review for the final exam for high school credit will
come in late May. Review packets and tips will be forthcoming.
Students should be reviewing vocabulary every night to
strengthen recognition skills which support speaking, listening,
reading, and writing. The journey is almost over for level 1, and Mme Yuan is confident that the destination will be well worth the trip! The Final
Exam for High School Credit will be administered May 31, June 1, 2, 3.
Bonne Chance in high school. Be sure to keep your mind open and tuned
to French opportunities in the future!
Students who may feel they need an extra boost should be attending Help Days on Tuesdays afterschool! Students can continue to
practice on their textbook website at https://my.hrw.com . Enter your

Mme Yuan says a sad “au revoir” to the 13
members of Cercle français 2015-16 who
have
worked so hard all year to share their French passion with the school and with our friends in France! We have much to
celebrate as we draw near to our last reunion in mid May.
Our sister school friends of Collège Châteaucoin in Baugé, France
have enjoyed getting to know the group this year! We have grown closer
as a club by honoring cultural holidays. We have creatively brainstormed,
organized, planned, implemented, and meticulously analyzed our
“L’Espoir, la Victoire!” week-long celebration of the language. Most importantly, we have grown in our language skills and knowledge.
The “cercle” is strong; members will always be a part of it! Au revoir!
Our annual French Week was celebrated April 18th through 22nd.
This year’s theme, “L’Espoir, La Victoire” was inspired by French
Canadian One Drop.org founded by Cirque du Soleil’s Guy Laliberté.
French Club members worked hard to produce French class and faculty activities
to promote the positive influence of One Drop which seeks to provide adequate
access to clean water and sanitation in various projects they fund around the
world. Students were exposed to a variety of thought-provoking water-themed
videos throughout the week to better understand the need to address the world
water crisis. They had many opportunities to discuss and reflect as we worked
through filling their individual “drops of knowledge”.
The month of April we have been dazzled by the front entrance artistic lobby display for One Drop created by Líle Casey, Merle Nommensen, Mollie Long, and
Laura Carter.
During French Week, P.A. announcers Líle Casey and Jordyn Habib kept the energy flowing in the morning while providing interesting and important background
on One Drop through the mini themes each day.
Most spirited 7th grade winners for the week are still being calculated, but there
were 15 winners of daily water riddles. For 8th grade, the most spirited winners
are still being calculated as well as Mrs. Yuan reads through the “buckets” of water drops of knowledge to determine extra effort! In addition, the most spirited
class per grade level was acknowledged and rewarded—Pd 3 (8th) and 4B (7th)!
Plus, there were many chic “Fashionistas” all week—most notably: Líle Casey(8),
Caroline Davisson(8) and Sofia Reicherter(7)!
The activity committee (Jordyn Habib, Liz Mezan, Jack Conley, Sara Haller) organized activities for students all week.
6th Graders competed with daily themed puzzle buckets for prizes w/ 15 winners!
7th graders competed in solving daily cultural riddle ripple puzzles and savoring
French “goûter” with a “Drop of Knowledge” daily reflection activity!
8th graders played the LOTO (12 winners), snacked, and competed in the final
Friday for French Immersion prizes for Flag Day...le Jour des drapeaux! The best
French student who won for using her French language all day was Leah Pickering, and Morgan Brookman captured Mme Yuan’s flag for speaking in English.
7th/8th graders also participated in a One Drop Art contest to promote the goals
of this amazing organization. Art contest entries will be judged the week of May
2nd by the Art Department, and winning entries will be on display in front of the
main office during the month of May.
FACULTY Members were treated to delicious French cuisine and prizes funded by
students Mike Morley, Laura Christie, Lincoln Doney and Leah Shapleigh. Faculty
members Mr. Horwitz, Mrs. Edmond, Mrs. Akers, and Mr. Marcus-Wenger won gift
certificates for answering water puzzle questions, and 11 runner-ups also received Perrier water with truffles.
Most importantly, the competitive Quarter Wars led to VICTORY raising $2863 for
One Drop in just 5 days, and 8th grade won the bragging rights for having the
best strategy...again! Best of all, this amount will help One Drop change the lives
of about 32 people forever in a sustainable way in accessing water.
Mrs. Yuan says “Merci mille fois, Cercle français”!!
Your passion for the language and culture is contagious! BRAVO!
