Your Blood now runs in mine, Your Soul, Incarnate God, compenetrates mine, giving courage and support. What miracles! Who would have ever imagined such!" - St. Maximilian Kolbe TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the "Consecration of Virgins," a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a "veiling" of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman's status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glx, OFM, © Copyright, J. Página Cuatro Tercer Domingo de Pascua 10 de Abril de 2016 Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, Two themes will be touched upon in this writing—praise and love of the Lamb and his absolute authority over all creatures . . . us included! The Apostles in the First Reading are being directed to ‘ stop teaching “in that name.” The Jewish leaders of the day had the Apostles jailed and beaten for their actions. But, they did not submit no matter the trial or suffering they faced or were to experience. The Apostles, we learn, felt worthy to suffer dishonor for “that name (Jesus).” Could we do the same? This is something to think about during our personal tribulations that we face—can we endure and conquer death through the Lamb, who is our hope? The Second Reading describes a future hope that all who give themselves to the Lamb will in fact praise the Father and the Lamb forever. We will be like Christ not a victim of our suffering but rather a victor through faithfulness in him. In the Gospel of John, the reading ends with Christ telling the Apostles and therefore us, to “follow me.” Recall the other two very important admonishments—Mary, the Mother of Christ at Cana telling the servants to “do what he says” and the Father at the Transfiguration saying “listen to him.” These three very clear instructions that if adhered to would have us walking in the way of Christ. Yet, we are in some ways like those who through fear denied Jesus during his time of need. Jesus in reality needed no help but he needs us to understand that which we are to do and that is to come to him, our Savior, with a humble heart and a love of the Father. Jesus does not deny Peter but through mercy Jesus forgives Peter by asking him three questions and three declarative requests to “feed my sheep. . . tend my sheep . . . feed my sheep.” The end result is that Peter is forgiven for his three denials of Christ and Peter is to become the leader of the emergent church built upon the love of the Lord and in stewardship of his people. The actions taken by Jesus were always to teach and signal a future event. Reflect upon the breakfast by the shore, was it merely a meal or was it much more? The meal of fish and bread Jesus is preparing for the Apostles is similar to what he did when he fed the multitudes whom he fed with the fish and bread contained in the seven baskets. Jesus is feeding his lambs with the Word, tending his sheep with love and feeding his lambs the Bread of Eternal Life, the future Eucharist that is available to us! My our Easter journey be filled with the knowledge of the love and mercy Jesus has for his faith community and our knowing that he is always with us on life’s journey. How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both because of the “breakfast” Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fifty-three”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be caught in the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of suffering. Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the full number of known species of fish, signifying that the Church’s “net” has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unity-indiversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church— we—“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone without exception” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12). --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J.
