Pastor’s Corner
Holy Week and Easter Triduum
Holy Week is the last week of Lent. It is the week we commemorate and enact the suffering (Passion) and death of Jesus through various observances and services of worship. While some church traditions focus specifically on the events of the
last week of Jesus’ life, many of the liturgies symbolize larger themes that marked Jesus’ entire ministry. In Catholic tradition,
the conclusion to the week is called the Easter Triduum (a triduum is a space of three days usually accompanying a church festival or holy days that are devoted to special prayer and observance).
Palm Sunday
This Sunday observes the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem that was marked by the crowds who were in Jerusalem for Passover waving palm branches and proclaiming Him as the messianic king. The Gospels tell us that Jesus rode into the
city on a donkey, enacting the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, and in so doing emphasized the humility that was to characterize the
Kingdom He proclaimed. The irony of His acceptance as the new Davidic King (Mark 11:10) by the crowds who would only
five days later cry for His execution should be a sobering reminder of the human tendency to want God on our own terms. This
Sunday is also known as Passion Sunday to commemorate the beginning of Holy Week and Jesus’ final agonizing journey to
the cross. The English word passion comes from a Latin word that means "to suffer," the same word from which we derive the
English word patient.
Maundy Thursday/Holy Thursday
Maundy Thursday, also known as “Holy Thursday” is the Thursday of Passion Week, one day before Good Friday.
Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last
Supper. Two important events are the focus of Maundy Thursday. First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and
thereby instituted the Eucharist (Luke 22:19-20). Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service,
thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17).
The word “Maundy” is derived from the Latin word for “command.” The “Maundy” in Maundy Thursday refers to the
command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another.
Good Friday
Good Friday is the Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. It is celebrated traditionally as the day on which Jesus
was crucified and had died. Why is Good Friday referred to as “good”? What the Jewish authorities and Romans did to Jesus
was definitely not good (see Matthew chapters 26-27). However, the results of Christ’s death are very good! Romans 5:8, “But
God demonstrates His own love for us in this: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Monetary offerings collected today will be sent to the Holy Land to support the needs of Christians who struggle daily
to survive in conditions marred by violence and strife and also to maintain shrines in our Lord’s place of birth, agony, death and
resurrection.
Holy Saturday
Holy Saturday is the name given to the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Some Christians recognize this
day as the seventh day of Holy Week, the day on which Jesus “rested” from His work of providing salvation for the world. Holy
Saturday is the day Jesus remained in the tomb where He had been buried following His crucifixion.
Easter Vigil
The Easter Vigil liturgy is the most beautiful liturgy in the Roman Catholic Church. Although celebrated Holy Saturday
evening, it is the dramatic Easter vigil liturgy that marks the beginning of Easter. We are awaiting our master's return with our
lamps full and burning, so that He will find us awake and seat us at His table (cf. Luke 12:35ff). All Catholics should try to attend this beautiful service. It is in the Easter Vigil that we welcome adult new members to the faith in the Sacrament of Baptism
and also administer the Sacraments Confirmation and Eucharist to them. The vigil is divided into four parts: (1)Service of
Light; (2)Liturgy of the Word; (3)Liturgy of Baptism; and (4) Liturgy of the Eucharist.
God bless!!! Fr. Elmer

Serra Daily Prayer for priestly and religious vocations:
Jesus, Lord of the harvest, Look with love on this portion of your vineyard. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like
your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.
Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12,
13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a
holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard
among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV)

You taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us
your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being
enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his
betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the
world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be
clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved,
and forgiven by God. Send Your Spirit And Consecrate Every One Of Us With Its
Anointing. So The Jubilee of Mercy May Be A Year Of Grace From The Lord.
And Your Church.
With Renewed Enthusiasm, May We Bring Your Good News To The Poor. Proclaim Liberty To Captives And The Oppressed, And Restore Sight To The Blind.
We Ask This Through The Intercession Of Mary, o Mercy, and You who livea and
reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever Amen.
“A Time to Heal, to Help, to Forgive."
Pope Francis “ Five Finger Prayer”
1. The thumb is the closes finder to you. So start praying
for those who are closest to you. They are the persons
easiest to remember. To pray for our dear ones is a “Sweet
Obligation,.”
2. The next finger is the index. Pray for those who teach
you, instruct you and heal you. They need the support and
wisdom to show direction to others. Always keep them in
your prayers.
3. The following finger is the tallest. It reminds us of our leaders the governors
and those who have authority. They need God's guidance.
4. The fourth finger is the ring finger. Even though it may surprise you, it is our
weakest finger. It should remind us to pray for the weakest, the sick or those
plagued by problems. They need your prayers.
5. And finally we have our smallest finger, the smallest of all . Your pinkie
should remind you to pray for yourself. When you are done praying for the other
four groups, you will be able to see your own needs but in the proper perspective,
and also you will be able to pray for your own needs in a better way.

con amor a esta porción de tu viña. Bendice la Diócesis de San Diego Bendito sea el Señor, porque él ha escuchado el sonido de mi escrito: "el Señor es mi fortaleza y mi escudo. En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda; a continuación, mi corazón exultante y con mi hijo le doy fuerza mi escudo . En él confía en mi corazón, y encontrar ayuda;

del buscar la felicidad solamente en una creatura;

Holy Week and Easter Triduum
Jueves Santo/o Jueves Maundy
Jesús definitivamente no era buena (veánse Mateo capítulos 26-27).
