X A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR X
“IF I HAVE HEARD IT ONCE, I’VE HEARD IT A THOUSAND TIMES”
With the passage of time, there are certain things that we hear over, and over, and over again. So much so in
fact, that those things no longer grab our attention; or like some signs, they no longer (like cigarette butts
alongside the curb, or graffiti (not art) on a building wall) catch our eye. Because we don’t see anything we don’t
say anything. (Please, if you see something, say something, do something.)
As true as that is for all of us outside our absolutely beautiful church, it is as equally true for us
inside that church as well. (Some people actually think that Cheerios, candy, cell phones, etc.
belong in church.) Consider the following “inside the church” announcements. Some of them
you hear on a weekly basis, some on a monthly basis, and still others perhaps on an annual
basis. At first, hearing these announcements generated some sort of internal response from
hearers which eventually led to a tangible response that could be seen not just on faces but in a
change of behaviour/practice. We became not just "hearers but doers" (cf. Saint James I:22).
o “Next Sunday is First Works of Mercy, …”
have we forgotten the poor in Freeport?
o “Next Sunday is Tie One On with a Hat and …”
have we forgotten how to dress (in church and outside of church)?
o “Please remember that absolutely no food, candy, …”
have we forgotten what churches are for?
o “Your pledge to the Catholic Ministries Appeal …”
have we forgotten that charity only begins at home?
o “Our Holy Redeemer needs Altar Servers, Ushers, Catechists, …
have we forgotten about following and sharing Christ?
If the City of God (of which we sing) is going to come to completion in Freeport, then as familiar as these
announcements are, and as expected as they may have become, they still warrant consideration, as well as a
change of practice. And the Holy Season of Lent is a good time for that consideration and change. We should
never grow tired from this weekly/monthly/annual exercise, for as Saint Paul says in his Letter to the
Galatians: “for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we don’t give up” (Galatians VI:9).
Your Pastor, Priests, Deacons, and Staff will not give up making announcements because Jesus doesn’t give up
making announcements. Just think of the Ash Wednesday words we’ve heard over and over and over again:
o “Return to Me with your whole heart” (JL II:12).
o “Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Saint Mark I:15).
o “Pray” (Saint Matthew VI:5). o “Fast” (Saint Matthew VI:XVI).
o “Give alms” (Saint Matthew VI:2).
Just think of the Parables that we’ve heard over and over and over again. Parables like
The Prodigal Son. Perhaps in today’s hearing of that Parable a younger son might “return
to the Lord with his whole heart”; an older son might “repent and believe in the Gospel”;
and a Father might pray, fast, and give alms in thanksgiving for both his sons. Thanks be
to God that we’ve not only heard it once, but we’ve heard it a thousand times.

FAITH AND EDUCATION
SCHOOL’S IN: DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road)
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
The SAT is an exam administered to high school juniors and seniors over several hours. Most
colleges use the results of that test to assess the eligibility of a candidate for admission to their
school. Low SAT scores can keep successful students out of some really good colleges. Data shows
that the family income and the education level of a teenager’s parents impacts on the youngster’s
scores. Many families spend significant money on tutoring or test prep classes. An article in the 2 March 2016 New
York Times reported that more than half of the students who took the test paid for test preparation.
The alumni of The De La Salle School come from socio-economic backgrounds that put them at a disadvantage when
they sit for the SAT. Aware of this reality our Graduate Support Program began a series of classes this week that will
help them do well when they take the SAT. A dozen of our graduates now have the same opportunity many of their
more affluent peers have.
With money from a grant from the Morris and Alma Schapiro Fund and with content delivered by Americana Student
Center in Rockville Centre, the program concludes less than one week before the administration of the SAT on 7 May.
Many thanks to the Directors of the Schapiro Fund for the financial help and to the administration of Americana
Student Center for the group discount. Success to our De La Salle men!

Mr. Odalis Rodriguez
FROM THE TREATISE "ON PRAYER" BY TERTULLIAN
Of old, prayer was able to rescue from fire and beasts and hunger, even before it
received its perfection from Christ. How much greater then is the power of Christian
prayer. No longer does prayer bring an angel of comfort to the heart of a fiery furnace,
or close up the mouths of lions, or transport to the hungry food from the fields. No
longer does it remove all sense of pain by the grace it wins for others. But it gives the
armour of patience to those who suffer, who feel pain, who are distressed. It
strengthens the power of grace, so that faith may know what it is gaining from the
Lord, and understand what it is suffering for the name of God.
In the past prayer was able to bring down punishment, rout armies, withhold the
blessing of rain. Now, however, the prayer of the just turns aside the whole anger of
God, keeps vigil for its enemies, pleads for persecutors. Is it any wonder that it can call
down water from heaven when it could obtain fire from heaven as well? Prayer is the one thing that can conquer
God. But Christ has willed that it should work no evil, and has given it all power over good.
Its only art is to call back the souls of the dead from the very journey into death, to give strength to the weak, to
heal the sick, to exorcise the possessed, to open prison cells, to free the innocent from their chains. Prayer
cleanses from sin, drives away temptations, stamps out persecutions, comforts the fainthearted, gives new
strength to the courageous, brings travelers safely home, calms the waves, confounds robbers, feeds the poor,
overrules the rich, lifts up the fallen, supports those who are falling, sustains those who stand firm.

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them” (See Luke15:1-32). In today’s readings we see two
different paradigms of how God is. The writer of Exodus sees God as an angry God who casts away
sinners. God tells Moses “let Me alone, then, that My wrath may blaze up against them to consume
them” (See Exodus 32:7-14). In contrast, the writers of the New Testament after having experienced
Jesus Christ in their lives see a God Who welcomes sinners and eats with them. They see a God
interested not so much in casting out sinners, but in gaining them back. We have the parable of the lost
sheep. The shepherd (a picture of God) goes to look for a lost sheep and upon finding it he sets it on his
shoulders with great joy and calls his friends to rejoice with him over the sheep. The woman—again
another picture of God—searches all over the house for her lost coin and rejoices over finding it. Finally
we see the Father—Jesus’ preferred picture of God—welcoming the lost son and encouraging the faithful one to enter into
the feast. We must remember that the true picture of God is the one given by our Lord Jesus Christ. This is the God Who
says to His faithful children “We must celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he
was lost and has been found.” How do you see God?
SEA SCOUTS, B.S.A.
(Coming Soon to Our Holy Redeemer!)
Sea Scouting is adventure on sea and land -- for you. Sea Scouting is program
of the Boy Scouts of America we will be offering to young men between the
ages of 13 (who have completed the eighth grade) and 21. It's a chance to
learn and have fun at the same time.
Sea Scouts is a specialized segment of the Scouting program, which teaches
boating skills and promotes knowledge of our maritime heritage.
Sea Scout units, called "ships," focus on sailing and cruising either sailboats or power vessels. During the
boating seasons, Sea Scouts learn to maintain and operate their vessel, with a focus on learning the safe
and proper methods of handling boats. Sea Scouts also learn the meaning of buoys and lights, how to take
advantage of wind and tide, and how to drop anchor or approach a dock.
Those interested in joining the Sea Scouts or becoming a volunteer adult leader (ages 21+) are asked to
leave their name for Father Alessandro da Luz at the Rectory: (516) 378-0665.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Amado, escúchenlo a Él” (San Lucas IX:35).
San Lucas X).
A ustedes

LOST AND
FOUND
To the Pharisees, Jesus addressed this
parable: “A man had two sons, and the
younger son said to his father, ‘Father,
give me the share of your estate that
should come to me.’ So the father
divided the property between them. ….
The younger son collected all his
belongings and set off to a distant
country where he squandered his
inheritance. When he had freely spent
everything … he found himself in dire
need. Coming to his senses … he got
up and went back to his father. While
he was still a long way off, his father
caught sight of him, and was filled with
compassion. His son said to him,
‘Father, I have sinned against Heaven
and against you; I no longer deserve to
be called your son.’ … His father
ordered his servants, ‘Let us celebrate
with a feast, because this son of mine
was dead, and has come to life again;
he was lost, and has been found.’”
