Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine
25TH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
FIRST READING: WISDOM
2:12, 17-20
Wicked people discuss their
anger at the just one, because
they do not like being reproached for their evil ways. They want to
see if he is the Son of God, so they decide to torture him and see if
God will come to defend him.
SECOND READING: JAMES 3:16—4:3
James discusses the importance of avoiding jealousy and strife.
People should strive for peace and justice instead of concentrating
on material pleasures which can tempt people to sin to obtain
whatever they desire.
GOSPEL: MARK 9:30-37
Jesus again attempts to prepare his disciples for his death and
resurrection, although they do not yet fully understand. They had
been arguing over who was the most important one, but Jesus tells
them whoever wants to rank first must be willing to remain a
servant to all. He also tells them that anyone who welcomes a child
in his name welcomes both him and God.
“Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come
from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your
members? You covet but do not possess.
You kill and envy but you cannot obtain,
you fight and wage war. You do not
possess because you do not ask. You
ask and you do not receive, because you
ask wrongly to spend it on your
passions.”
The words of James’ letter we can apply
to the world around us. Although he
speaks of the root of the conflicts within
us, we can concede that they also go
outside us. Conflicts exit in so many places in the world. The
‘enemy’ seems to arise on all fronts. Al Caida, ISIS, Boko Rama,
Taliban – it is easy to put a name on it. But we should look closer
to home.
The weapons we sell to other nations are often confiscated and
used against good people. The monies nations use to wage war
could be directed to saving lives. Training persons to wage war is
contrary to the gospel of Jesus.
Nonviolence is the way of Jesus and the gospel. If we do not seek
peace and work for justice, we will never know either. Pope Paul
VI told us ‘if you want peace work for justice.’ The prophets of
nonviolence Ghandi, Dr. King and Dorothy Day are admired, but
somehow their message, like that of James is drowned out by
rhetoric pushing war.
*Above picture is an actual manuscript of the Epistle of St James
The final plans for the Papal Mass are
being finalized by the Archdiocese
and the winners of the tickets have
been (by the time of this printing)
notified. Congratulations to all of
them. I ask that all parishioners do watch it at home if they can
and if you work in the city that day, please stay home. Many of
the routes into Manhattan will be closed off due to the Pope’s
visit and the general meeting of the United Nations.
If you did not know or you didn’t read the column from a
couple of weeks ago, members of our Parish Choir will be
singing at the Papal Mass. I saw a funny little picture recently
that had Jesus giving a sermon and someone drew in “Join the
Choir!”. I got a good laugh out of it, but there is some truth in
that. Saint Augustine said “he who sings well prays twice.” but
truth be told, he never said that. What he said was “cantare
amantis est… Singing belongs to one who loves.” Some people
may not realize the extend, in particular, the Parish and Chancel
Choirs work to create the music for the liturgies and special
events. I hear them on Thursday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m.
warming up and then engaging themselves into the hymn, the
anthems, or whatever it maybe. I am particularly fond of “If Ye
Love Me” written by Philip Wilby, a British composer. The
beautiful blending of the voices with the organ is sumptuous to
say the least. What would the liturgy be without the organ and
the choir? Well very quiet at times. Last week you may of heard
odd noises coming from the organ; it seems like with all things
old its falling apart.
Starting in October, as I mentioned previously, we will start the
increasing giving campaign. I hope and pray that we can all
come together and make this a steady reality. Many of you say,
“why does Father need money, I don’t see things being done.”
Please be assured we are using the monies collected to repair
areas of the Church and Chapel, but these are things that
sometimes we can not see or touch readily. Your good
stewardship makes Saint Joseph a church that is welcoming to
new and old faces.
My last important thought for this column is something that
will affect a majority of us. As the directive the Archdiocese of
New York, I will, with the help of the Parish Council be
reconfiguring the Masses here at the parish. This will go in
affect the first week of Advent 2015. As always it is important
that you read the bulletin to keep up with events in the parish.
Thank you for making Saint Joseph the best parish in the
Archdiocese of New York.

VIGESIMOQUINTO DOMINGO
Ustedes
O bien, piden y no reciben,
Si no
Canto pertenece a quien ama." Algunas
Me gusta

toutes sortes d’actions malfaisantes
EVANGILE : LE FILS DE L’HOMME EST LIVRÉ…SI
QUELQU’UN VEUT ÊTRE LE PREMIER, QU’IL SOIT LE
SERVITEUR DE TOUS (MC
9, 30-37)
cela. Ce qu'il a dit était " cantare amantis is… Chanter appartient
l'Archidiocèse de New York.
