“Called to rest awhile”
Father Mark Wagner
Today’s Gospel
(Mark 6:30-34)
describes
what
happened when the
apostles returned and
“reported all they had
done and taught.” Jesus’
response was: “Come
away by yourselves to a deserted
place and rest a while.” These words
describe what we continue to do as we
continue the mission of Jesus. We are
sent out to work, but then we gather
together again. We have “small group
discussions” and “faith sharing
sessions” and “retreats.” Jesus knew
that these things are important. Jesus
was the first one to use these
techniques in ministry. It is important
to take a break. It is important to get
together and share our experience in
order to receive advice and support
from one another. It is important to
“rest a while” together during
prayerful retreats.
During the summer many of us will
be taking family vacations. It may be
the only opportunity during the year
to really spend quality time with the
members of our families. During the
rest of the year our lives are very
hectic and we need to get away from
time-consuming projects, distracting
duties, and annoying electronics. A
vacation can be a time to enjoy the
beauty of God’s creation together, a
time to enjoy the beauty that we
discover when we get to know each
other better, and a time to pray
together.
A vacation can be a holy time. We
need a spirituality of
vacationing. Jesus called His disciples
to rest. They received a vocation to
vacation!
St. Therese said that you could
convert a soul just by “picking up a pin”
because of love. Perhaps we can save
many souls if we spend our vacation
time with great love in our hearts for
God and for one another!

World Youth Day Pilgrims from St. Joseph's are preparing
Pilgrims from St. Joseph's are
preparing to attend World Youth
Day 2016 in Krakow, Poland. They
are working to raise, with your help,
the $84,000 needed to make the
trip. From now until the time they
leave for Poland in July 2016, we will
include information and photos of the
pilgrims for you to get to know them
and begin to pray for them. The
entire group thanks you for your past
and future financial support during
their various fundraisers.
Jennifer Joseph attends Modesto
High School as part of the IB
program. She is a Lector at the 5:30
PM Youth Mass and an active
participant in the monthly Indian
Masses. During WYD 2016, she is
"looking forward to seeing the Pope,
seeing new places, growing in my
faith, and uniting with the Catholics
that came from all over the world to
Krakow to praise God." From now
until the time the group leaves she
"hopes to learn more about my faith
and to spiritually prepare herself
Jasmine Lara
prior to departure," so that she "may be
able to cherish the moments and to be
present to the Lord while" she is
there. She wanted to share what she
expects about the pilgrimage. It won't
be a vacation: "we will be having Mass
and praying often and our main focus
would be on God and living for His
glory, even if some things may not be
the way we would want it to be (for
example, bad weather, limited places
to stay for the night, etc.)."
Jasmine Lara attends Modesto
Junior College, while helping her
aunt run Alfonso's Mexican Bar and
Grill, a local restaurant. She shares, "I
am really looking forward to seeing
young people from all around the
world praising God and who share my
faith. Often, when attending daily
Jennifer Joseph
Mass there are not many young
people in attendance; and those who
are young, are young children who
come with their parents. I am a part of
the core team that leads high school
students; and I am hoping to have
some great experiences to relay back
to them that will spark their interest
in our faith!" For those who have
helped at any of the group's
fundraisers, she had the following to
say: "Thank you! It really means a lot
to us. I know that I could not pay for
this trip if not for those who donate
and support us by buying what we
have to sell or attend one of our
events, even when you did not need
what we were selling. Know that it is
truly appreciated."
Respect Life
“Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible
with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern
for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail
to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates
difficulties? ‘If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is
lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away’.”

Michael Rocha
Michael Rocha grew up in St.
Joseph’s Parish and now he is in his
second year studying theology in the
seminary to be a priest in our Stockton
Diocese. We are proud to proclaim that
Michael’s vocation is the locally grown
fruit produced by our vibrant St.
Joseph’s Parish!
Michael and his twin sister Michelle
were born in Modesto to Frank and
Evelyn Rocha who came from the Azores
Islands. Michael became an altar boy at
age eight and attended catechism at St.
Joseph’s. The seeds of Michael’s faith
were planted by his devout parents and
nourished by the sacraments.
With the grace of Confirmation
came the beginnings of an attraction
toward the priesthood. But during his
years at Downey High School he lost
some of his fervor and became less
faithful to serving at the altar, visiting
the adoration chapel and praying the
rosary. After High School Michael went
to U.C. Riverside to study biology with
the idea of becoming a dentist. But he
found that this did not give him a sense
of passion and fulfillment.
When he returned to Modesto for
when Christmas break 2010 he spoke to
his parents and to Fr. Illo about his
newfound desire to become a priest. He
changed his major to philosophy and
became involved in campus ministry
with the Catholic Newman Center at
U.C. Riverside. Upon graduating he
immediately entered St. Patrick’s
Seminary in Menlo Park.
Michael’s family is now grieving the
loss of Michael’s father who died in
December of 2013.
God bless you Michael for
responding to God’s call!

DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark
El Decimosexto Domingo del Tiempo
Padre Mark Wagner
En el Evangelio de hoy (Marcos
6:30-34), está descrito lo que pasa
cuando los apóstoles regresan y
“contaron todo lo que habían hecho
y enseñado.” La respuesta de Jesús
fue: “Vengan ustedes solos a un lugar
desierto, para descansar un
poco.” Estas palabras describen lo
que seguimos haciendo al continuar
la misión de Jesús.
Estamos
mandados a trabajar, pero después
nos volvemos a reunir.
Tenemos “discusiones de grupos
pequeños” y “sesiones de compartir
la fe” y “retiros.” Jesús sabía que
estas cosas son importantes. ¡Jesús fue
el primero en utilizar estas técnicas
en el ministerio! Es importante tomar
un descanso. Es importante reunirse
con otros y compartir nuestras
experiencias y “contarles” unos a
otros para poder recibir consejos y
apoyo de los demás. Es importante
“descansar un rato” junto durante
retiros llenos de oración.
Durante el verano, muchos
tomaremos vacaciones
familiares. Tal vez sean la única
oportunidad de pasar tiempo de
calidad con miembros de nuestras
familias. Durante el resto del año,
nuestras vidas están muy frenéticas,
y necesitamos alejarnos de los
proyectos que consumen mucho
tiempo y responsabilidades
tiempo sagrado. Necesitamos una
espiritualidad de vacaciones. Jesús
llamó a sus discípulos a descansar.
¡Recibieron una vocación de
vacación!
Santa Teresita dijo que se puede
convertir a un alma con sólo “recoger
un alfiler” por el amor. ¡Tal vez
podemos salvar a muchas almas si
pasamos nuestras vacaciones con un
amor grande en nuestros corazones
para Dios y para los demás!

Leer, Meditar, Orar y Vivir
Llamados a permanecer con El
Padre Hamilton Suarez
cosas. Por una parte, el Señor los invita
a descansar. Reponen fuerzas también
en compañía de Jesús. Así para el
discípulo de Cristo, el trabajo y el
descanso se dan siempre unidos a Él.
Vemos como Cristo salva a los
discípulos de ser arrollados por la
multitud que continuamente los rodea
y reclama. Es un signo más de su
bondad y de cómo hemos de dejarnos
cuidar por El. Si pretendiéramos
servirle sin dejar que Él nos cuidara,
acabaríamos exhaustos.
Es imposible llevar a cabo una
misión fecunda, sea cual sea desde el
hogar, el trabajo, los apostolados en la
parroquia o los voluntariados
prestados a cualquier institución,
especialmente a la Iglesia, sin estas
pausas reparadoras junto al Maestro,
destinadas a tomar nuevas fuerzas no
solo físicas sino espirituales. Pausa de
oración y de atención interior para
profundizar la Palabra del Señor y
encarnarla cada vez mejor en la propia
vida. Hoy el Señor nos recuerda que
debemos tomarnos muy en serio estos
encuentros de descanso con el: En la
oración personal; familiar; en la visita
al santísimo, en la preparación de mis
sacramentos; en los retiros espirituales
y en las misiones.
Por otra parte, Jesús aparta un
momento a los apóstoles de la
actividad para mostrarles una misión
más grande. Casi de inmediato, Jesús se
pone a enseñar con calma a una
multitud inmensa.
lado, debe guiar todas nuestras
decisiones.
modesta e indirecta, cuantos ocupan
reencontrado
de
hacerse
sacerdote. Cambió su especialización a
filosofía y participaba en el ministerio de
la Universidad con el Centro Católico
Newman en U.C. Riverside. Al graduarse,
entró inmediatamente en el Seminario de
San Patricio en Menlo Park.
Actualmente, la familia de Michael
sigue lamentándose la muerte del papá
de Michael quien se murió en diciembre
de 2013.
¡Qué Dios te bendiga,
Michael, por responder la
llamada de Dios!

WHY IS IT
A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor
he ADVERTISES it for sale.
