SAINT ATHANASIUS
Dear Parishioners,
I was surprised this week when I received my copy of the December National Geographic magazine in the mail and the
cover story was entitled-- "Mary: the Most Powerful Woman in
the World." The cover photo is a beautiful detail from the circa1480 painting "the Virgin and the Child" by Sandro Botticelli.
This got me thinking that Mary apparently has something to
offer the general public beyond just us Catholics. According to
the National Geographic article, Mary (Maryam) is also highly
revered by Muslims. She is the only woman to have her own
sura (chapter) in the Koran. "Mary is the purest and most virtuous of all women in the universe," says the dean of the theology
faculty at Al Azhar University, Cairo's leading theological university. I had no idea she was so popular among our Muslim
brothers and sisters.
So Why Do We Catholics Honor and Revere Mary?
Mary is mentioned in all four Gospels and once in the Book of
Acts. Church tradition has also linked her with the “woman
clothed with the sun” in the Book of Revelation (Rev. 12:1).
She is a model for us of discipleship. We honor her as the first
disciple of Jesus, the first one to hear the good news and accept
it. Because she said yes, Christ was born and we are redeemed.
"Let it be done to me according to your word." The Annunciation Lk 1:26-38. Like a good disciple, Mary is Christ-bearer to
the world. The early Greek Christians gave Mary the title Theotokos, which means “God-bearer” or Mother of God. This title
was confirmed by the Council of Ephesus in 431.
It makes sense that those who confess Jesus as their Savior
would also show honor and respect to his mother.
God the Father honors Mary: The angel Gabriel, sent from
God, announces "hail favored one! The Lord is with you." (Lk
1:28) "...you have found favor with God." (Lk1:30) This is
great praise from God. God honors Mary by choosing her and
allowing the fullness of divinity to take human form in her.
Jesus honors Mary. He chose her to be his mother. At the very
beginning of his public life, he changes water into wine at the
wedding feast at Cana at the intercession of Mary (Jn 2:1-11).
She was there with Jesus when he died (Jn 19:25). Jesus cared
for his mother even on the cross: "Women behold, your son.
Then to the disciple. Behold, your mother. And from that hour
the disciple took her into his home." (Jn19:26-27)
The first disciples honored Mary. She prayed with them while
they waited for the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14). Just
as Jesus is born of Mary in Bethlehem, so the Church of Jesus
Christ is born at Pentecost with Mary also present.
The early Church honored Mary: Mary was honored by the
first Christians. As early as 150 A.D. in the catacombs of
Rome, people painted pictures of Mary holding the baby Jesus.
I personally associate Mary more with this time of year than
with the month of May because of her role in the story of Jesus'
birth and because of her two upcoming feast days. As we move
into the Advent and Christmas seasons, I would encourage you
to reflect upon the role of Mary in our Catholic Tradition and
join us in celebrating her Immaculate Conception by attending
one of our Holy Day Masses on Tuesday, December 8th and by
participating in one of the many events scheduled for the celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe beginning on
Friday evening December 11th and continuing on Saturday,
December 12th.

BOLETIN HISPANO
Queridos feligreses,
a. Dios Padre honra a María: El ángel Gabriel, enviado de
Dios, anuncia "Dios te salve, El Señor está contigo." (Lc 1:28)
b. Jesús honra a María.
Ella estaba
allí con Jesús cuando murió (Juan 19:25). Jesús cuidó de su
madre, incluso en la cruz: ".... Mujeres he aquí tu hijo y dijo al
discípulo: He aquí, tu madre Y desde aquella hora el discípulo
la recibió en su casa" (JN19: 26-27)
