Bergdahl charged with desertion
and faces possible life in prison

The U.S. Army on Wednesday
formally charged Sgt. Bowe
Bergdahl with desertion of his
post in Afghanistan and misbehavior before the enemy, which
will be examined by a court in
the coming months.
If Bergdahl is found guilty by
the court, he could face anywhere
from five years to life in prison.
According to Jeffrey Addicott,
the director for the Center for
Terrorism Law at St. Mary’s
University and a former Army
Officer in the Judge Advocate
General’s Corps, said the charges
against Bergdahl are deserved
and warrant punishment..
“It’s about time,” Addicott
told La Prensa. “It’s taken 10
months to decide what to do
which I think is outrageous, but
the Army has rightly charged
him with a crime that deserves
to be heard.”
“Desertion is the most serious
crime that you can commit, and
misbehavior towards the enemy
is not just helping the enemy,
but it is also a crime against your
fellow soldiers,” Addicott added.
Bergdahl was held prisoner by
the Taliban for five years after
leaving his post in Afghanistan
without orders in 2009. His
story attracted media attention
last May when the Obama Administration secured his release
by exchanging the sergeant for
five Taliban prisoners held at
Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
Bergdahl, now 28, responded
to the charges with a written
statement to the New York
Times, that said he was tortured
and beaten for attempting to escape the Taliban group.
The New York Times reported
his description of the capture,
“Without food and only putrid
water to drink, my body failed on
top of a short mountain close to
evening,” Bergdahl wrote.
Bergdahl went on to write that
he had attempted to escape his
captors 12 times before President
U.S. Army officials announced that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was held captive by the Taliban for five years after leaving his post in Obama intervened on his behalf.

Comentarios... Lógica mexicana
“Cuando despertó, el dinosaurio todavía
estaba ahí”.

En México, la
Jorge Ramos lógica y la justicia están invertidas. ¿Quién debe perder su
puesto: el que comete un acto de
corrupción o quien lo denuncia?
Claro, debería perderlo quien
es corrupto. Pero en México,
siguiendo la lógica del mundo
al revés, quien comete el acto de
corrupción se queda en su puesto
y quien lo denuncia es despedido.
Es la lógica mexicana del poder:
Mata al mensajero.
Hace cuatro meses la periodista
Carmen Aristegui y su equipo
de investigadores denunciaron
que la esposa del presidente de
México, Angélica Rivera, incurrió
en un grave conflicto de interés
al comprar y financiar una casa
–valorada en más de 6 millones
de dólares– a Grupo Higa, un
contratista del gobierno. Higa,
actualmente, tiene contratos por
varios millones de dólares con el
gobierno mexicano.
La inusual transacción –¿qué
mexicano puede recibir un trato
similar de un contratista?– hizo
preguntarse a muchos si la residencia (conocida popularmente
como la “Casa Blanca”) se vendió
en circunstancias muy favorables
a cambio de contratos gubernamentales. ¿Casa por favores?
Pongámoslo en perspectiva: Si
Michelle Obama hubiera financiado una casa privada con un
contratista del gobierno estadouni­
dense, su esposo, Barack Obama,
ya no estaría hoy en la verdadera
Casa Blanca. Eso no es ético ni
transparente.
Imposible saber si hubo presiones de la presidencia de México a
la empresa MVS para despedir a
Aristegui.
Voceros de MVS dijeron que
Aristegui fue despedida porque
ella y sus representantes utilizaron
el nombre de MVS para recaudar
fondos destinados para Mexicoleaks, un nuevo proyecto de
periodismo investigativo, sin su
autorización
Pero ella sospecha que sí las
hubo. Todo “nos hace pensar que
hubo una intervención gubernamental”, dijo la periodista en una
declaración. “No es un conflicto
entre particulares”. Se trata de un
“manotazo autoritario”.
La lógica y la justicia sugerirían
que un fiscal independiente o una
comisión del Congreso investigaran a fondo el aparente conflicto
de interés del presidente y su esposa en la compra de la casa. Pero,
en cambio, el presidente Enrique
Peña Nieto nombró a Virgilio
Andrade, un subalterno y miembro de su gabinete, para que lo
investigara.
Nadie le va a creer. Andrade
tiene colgada una gran foto del
presidente en su oficina, según
comprobó el diario español El
País. La designación de Peña Nie­
to fue tan tonta, burda e infantil
que hasta parece un juego. Pero
es la lógica mexicana del poder:
Hazles creer que haces aunque no
hagas nada.
Otro ejemplo. Cuando el papa
Francisco comentó en una nota
a un amigo que le preocupaba la
“mexicanización” de Argentina
–refiriéndose al aumento de la nar­
coviolencia– el gobierno de Peña
Nieto inmediatamente se quejó.
Pero en lugar de preocuparse por
lo que diga el papa y de la mala
imagen de México, primero ha­
bría que reconocer que la mayoría
de los crímenes en México no se
castigan. Además, desde que Peña
Nieto llegó al poder más de 37 mil
mexicanos han sido asesinados,
según cifras oficiales. La nueva
lógica mexicana es que hasta el
papa la trae contra México.
Un ejemplo más. Me encantan
las campañas turísticas del puerto
de Acapulco: “Habla bien de
Aca”, y del estado de Michoacán:
“Un destino que lo tiene todo, solo
faltas tú”. Las fotos son espectaculares. Pero ¿cómo promueves el
turismo en lugares donde matan
estudiantes, periodistas y civiles?
Es la lógica mexicana del poder:
tratar de imponer la imagen por
encima de la realidad. Esperan,
absurdamente, que la propaganda
haga olvidar los asesinatos diarios
en Guerrero y Michoacán.
Lo que estamos viendo en
México en estos momentos es a un
gobierno a la defensiva, con actos
de verdadera desesperación, y a
una sociedad civil, cada vez más
grande, consciente y poderosa,
que no se deja. Los gobiernos
asediados (ya lo vimos también
en Argentina) son muy peligrosos: pierden los límites, se aíslan,
tratan de imponer su (i) lógica y
hacen cualquier cosa – ¡cualquie­
ra!– para sobrevivir. Así está el
gobierno de Peña Nieto. Aristegui
lo describió como un “vendaval
autoritario”.
Entendamos. El poder nunca entrega el poder: hay que
a­rrancárselo. Y como el Congreso
y la oposición política en México
son tan tibios, cómplices y miedosos, le ha tocado a los periodistas
independientes y a los estudiantes
y a los maestros –y a todos los
ciudadanos de a pie– pelear por
un país más justo y democrático.
Cuando el poder abusa, el periodismo tiene que ser contrapoder.
Y en México tenemos grandes
y valientes mujeres perio­distas.
Además, México ya está listo para
un revolcón político. No tarda.
Los indignados son muchos.
Pue­de surgir un movimiento, o
muchos, como “Podemos” pero a
la mexicana, antisistema, sin las
ataduras chavistas, menos dogmático y más incluyente.
La voz de Carmen Aristegui y
de su equipo no se va a apagar.
Este no es el México del 1968.
Aristegui, y una maravillosa
generación de jóvenes comunicadores mexicanos en las redes
sociales, están del lado correcto
de la historia, y luchan por un
México nuevo.
Lo que pasa es que el México
viejo no acaba de morir; el dinosaurio sigue ahí, herido, y está
dando coletazos.

Fifty years
ago in the oneroom Texas
schoolhouse
where he once
studied, PresiLloyd Doggett dent Lyndon
Baines Johnson signed the original Elementary and Secondary Education Act
into law. This law was passed to
addresses inequality in educational opportunity. And it has played
a vital role in helping schools so
that economically disadvantaged
students can work their way into
the middle class.
The most recent, notable reauthorization of this law, signed by
President Bush, is known as No
Child Left Behind. That law has
many faults, and now we have
the opportunity to correct them
to better serve America’s school
children. But it is no surprise
that Republican leadership is
squandering that opportunity by
pushing their grossly misnamed
“Student Success Act.”
The same reactionary forces
who opposed President Johnson
want to further undermine his
civil rights law through this
new reauthorization. The Republican bill is supported by
the ideologues, who oppose the
very concept of federal aid to
education, who disparage public
schools as “government schools,”
and who previously have even
sought to abolish the Department
of Education.
The many who remain committed to quality education, have
urged a no vote on this bill—
LULAC, the NAACP, NCLR,
and the National Education Association.
This bill shrinks school funding and threatens protections for
disadvantaged students. San Antonio Independent School District
would be cut by $2.9 Million, or
9.9% of the current Title I funding. It fails to address the unique
challenges at-risk students face,
and it ignores the need of students
who want to learn English. And
it terminates required support for
professional development that
encourages innovative teaching.
This bill ignores 50 years of
studies regarding brain development and the importance of
quality learning for our youngest Americans. Despite the bipartisan support earned across
America, despite the incredible
return it offers on public investment, early childhood education
is totally omitted from this bill.
In contrast, Democrats have put
forward a counter proposal to help
states, if they choose, to expand
pre-K.
Their proposal completely
omits any requirement that states
use federal dollars to strengthen
education rather than simply using federal dollars to replace state
educational dollars and fill budget
gaps. But we know that in states
like Texas where school inequality is severe, state leadership
has demonstrated that, given the
chance, irresponsible Texas politicians will favor corporate tax
breaks over better schools without
hesitation. Children should come
before corporations in our education laws.
Despite our efforts, the United
States remains one of the few
industrialized country to devote
more money to the education of
the wealthy than the poor. The
Republican bill promotes such
irresponsibility and we must oppose it until we have a Congress
committed to a meaningful federal role in advancing individual
opportunity and developing a
competitive, world class workforce.
Just a Thought: Springtime is back!
L o o k ing up the
definition of
“springtime,”
in Webster’s
Dictionary,
I discovered
that it is deSteve Walker fined as “the
state or time
of being a child.” A second definition is “state or time of great activity, thriving, or achievement.”
As a man in the winter of his life,
reminiscing about my “springtime” and wondering where all
the years went, it gave me pause.
The list of synonyms from the
first definition made me take
notice and reminisce: infancy, toddlerhood, youth, boyhood, adolescence, immaturity, and so on.
Even though I am a senior citizen knocking on the door of 70
next year, I came to the conclusion
I still exhibit some of those traits
for better or worse. Obviously
“immaturity” comes to mind.
When I share with my old and
young friends that I am getting on
in years, many repeat the old expression, “Age is only a number.”
My retort is, “but my number is
a high number and I can’t count
that high!” Then there is the quote.
“You are only as old as you feel.”
That is when “adolescence,” kicks
in, which is not a good sign.
With the winter weather finally
coming to an end, it appears it’s
that time of year when flowers
blossom, trees leafing; the grass
turns green and rebirth of sorts
take over the landscape. This analogy of the season and age seem to
go hand in hand.
Back in my “spring time” as
a young man I was full of hope,
spunk and thought I knew everything-- since I was the smartest
guy around in my mind. It is
amazing how getting up in years
can temper attitudes like that.
What was I thinking? (Or not)
Growing up in the baby boomer
generation, my contemporaries
and I were shocked to learn that
the older we got, the smarter our
parents became. I realize every
generation of young people experience the same revelations as
my generation as we age. Why I
thought we were unique is now
beyond me. An inkling of wisdom
perhaps?
Now that it is literally springtime as far as the weather is
concerned as temperatures rise
and we get closer to Easter, it is
a time to put winter clothes away
and old mind sets as well. We
begin anew so to speak. Just as
the season changes from winter
to spring, so we can create fresh
ideas to get us to the next season
in our journey of life.
Remembering the second definition states, “state or time of
great activity, thriving, or achievement.” I think I will opt for the
second definition since I think I
still have some achievement left
in my future.
Since I am gently reminded that
70 is swiftly approaching in my
immediate future, I do believe I
better make the best of it, as I feel
that I have a few more seasons left
to experience. But then again that
may be my springtime mentality
talking!
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

dejemos engañar por las apariencias, Ted Cruz sabe lo que hace;
está vivito y coleando.

Liberty, Ted Cruz prometió des­
hacerse de la oficina federal que
recauda impuestos (IRS) una vez
que fuera elegido como presidente
de la nación. También prometió
borrar, palabra por palabra, la
ley de salud universal del presidente Barack Obama, la cual es
conocida coloquialmente como
Obamacare.
Asimismo, el senador Cruz se
ha convertido en el caballo de
batalla de los conservadores so-
ciales en torno a la problemática
de los LGTBI y la cuestión del
aborto. Dice ser enemigo acé­
rrimo de los matrimonios gays,
de la adopción de niños por parte
de homosexuales y no respalda
la liber­tad de la mujer en una decisión enteramente de su cuerpo.

Local experts aim to prevent premature births

According to the CDC, preterm
birth is the leading cause of longterm neurological disabilities in
children and it was the leading
cause of infant mortality in 2010.
To combat this on-going epidemic, local experts participated
in the “Down with Pre-Term Birth”
town hall meeting hosted by The
Children’s Shelter Nurse Family
Partnership program and March
of Dimes.
An infant born more than three
weeks early is considered premature, Dr. San Juanita Garza-Cox,
Neonatologist of the Pediatrix
Medical group, explained.
On average, 432 infants are born
in San Antonio every week, 60
of which are born premature and
three which die before their first
year of life.
According to Garza-Cox, most
of those premature babies are born
to teen moms.
“It’s suspected that in teen moms
pre-natal care is not as good, they’re
not as aware of preterm symptoms
and so they don’t seem to seek help
or medical advice as quickly as

Finding the cause of prematurity
is still a work in progress, however,
there are prevention tactics outside
of science that could make all the
difference.
Garza-Cox encourages early
education on proper prenatal care,
spreading out pregnancies, a good
nutrition, preventing stress and
avoiding toxic elements like drugs
and alcohol.
However, Martha Martinez,
clinical assistant professor of Family and Community Health System
of UT Health Science Center at
San Antonio, underscored a variety of social factors that cannot be
changed.
Statistics show that African
American women are at higher
risk of preterm labor, regardless
of their socio-economic level. She
added that risk factors like domestic
violence and drive by shooting will
always be there.
“Unless we’re able to remove
them, we are probably going to continue to struggle,” Martinez said.
“Even if we’re coming out with
cutting edge treatment, they can’t
afford it, social policy cycles are
going to keep us from the benefit
of science.”
All panelists agreed that stress
has a direct correlation with preterm births.
“If you measure the stress hormone levels of a preterm birth
mother compared to that of a fullterm birth mother, they’re off the
chart,” Dr. Patrick Ramsey, professor of Obstetrics-Gynecology at
UT Health Science Center at San
Antonio, said.
Martinez said continuous stress
triggers like food insecurity, inability to pay bills and immigration
status could lead to premature birth.
Ramsey added that most mothers
calm down when he admits them in
the hospital, but as soon as he sends
them back home where they’re often in a stressful environment they
start contracting again.
Unfortunately, the ramifications
of preterm labor don’t end at birth.
There are maternal health care
costs, neonatal health care costs,
immediate long term child health
issues, downstream effects on future pregnancies, potential loss of
work and disabilities.
Garza-Cox said the average
cost of having a full-term baby is
between $3,000 and $4,000; however, the birth of a pre-term baby is
averaged at $55,000.

horrific things that they have to
deal with, the economic expenses,
the social stress, stress in the marriage, stress in the family, as well
as the infant who ends up developing neurodevelopmental problems

of different programs that aim
to prevent preterm birth, one of
those is the Nurse Family Partnership program. As a part of The
Children’s Shelter, this program
connects a first time mother with a
nurse. The nurse guides the mother
from the moment she finds out she
is pregnant until the infant is two
years old.
These nurses encourage proper
prenatal care and help the mother
make better decisions when it
comes to all things related to her
pregnancy, including identifying
unhealthy relationships and inadequate jobs that require too much
physical exertion.
The March of Dimes March for
Babies walk on Saturday March
28 at Sea World is another way the
community is involved in preventing preterm labor.
The walk funds research to find
the cause of premature birth, supports families with a premature
baby in newborn intensive care
and helps women have full-term
pregnancies.

Coca-Cola gives back to Labor Street Park

City officials announced on
Wednesday plans to prepare San
Antonio for an expected population boom in the next 25 years.
“SA Tomorrow,” a threepart collaborative program
between residents, businesses
and officials hopes encourages
sustainable and positive growth
throughout the city.
Officials project that 1 million people will move to San
Antonio by 2040, which will
require the city to create additional transportation modes,
new jobs, and housing options.
Mayor Ivy Taylor stressed the
importance of citizen participation in the planning process.
“Citizen involvement in the
planning process will mean
the difference between a set
of plans that sits on a shelf, or
planning documents that are
living, breathing, reflections
of how our residents feel about
the future of our city,” Mayor
Taylor said.
Officials hope that transportation resources like VIA Metropolitan Transit’s new E-bus
will help manage downtown
traffic. The bus plans to run

during evenings from Tuesday
to Saturday, providing free
transportation to popular destinations including La Villita and
the Tobin Center for the Arts.
“The growth in San Antonio
is absolutely mind boggling in
terms of population, but also
in terms of congestion we are
experiencing in our streets and
the strain on our infrastructure,”
Dist. 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg said. “We’re trying to
develop an integrated plan to
deal with all those things.”
SA Tomorrow officially kicks
off with a free, interactive event
for residents on Saturday, April
11.
Attendees are invited to enjoy mini-workshops, familyfriendly activities and prize
giveaways like exercise equipment and family entertainment
packages.

Coca-Cola and the City of San
Antonio will celebrate the grand
opening of Victoria Commons/
Labor Street Park this Saturday
with a family-friendly event that
includes music, health demos and
fun activities for kids.
Coca-Cola began work on the
park last December, dedicating
a $150,000 grant to improve the
area and add new fitness equipment.
“We’ve been offering sports
and park programs in San Antonio for years,” David Salazar, the
Austin/San Antonio market unit
general manager for Coca-Cola
said. “The Labor Street Park is
just an expansion of what was
already there in an urban area,
where recreational areas are
limited.”
Residents have already begun
forming a kickball team to play
on their new field this spring.
The park also features an area
for circuit training, as well as a
newly paved and painted basketball court.
Coca-Cola has been active
part of the SA 2020 Health and
Fitness initiative and is working
with the city to reduce the rates
of adult obesity by 10 percent and
childhood obesity by 25 percent.
The company previously
awarded the National Recreation
and Park Association a $1.5 million grant in 2012 which created
free health programs in San Antonio including “Troops for Fitness,” which provides boot-camp
style classes and “RoTenGo,” a
weekly instructional tennis program at parks throughout the city.
“We live and work in this com-
munity where businesses exist
and we want people to keep in
mind not only what they eat and
what they drink, but what they
do,” Salazar said.
Families are invited to join
the Zumba classes, test the new
exercise equipment and play ball
this Saturday, as a demonstration of the free fitness programs
available to the San Antonio
community.
“As a good corporate citizen
we need to be mindful of what we
do, and how we want to invest in
the community in San Antonio.
We want to encourage people to
get outside, get active and stay
healthy.”
Victoria Commons Park is located at 436 Labor Street, within
the Artisan Park apartment area.
The park’s grand opening takes
place on Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m.

Universidades, escuelas y centros
comunitarios en países latinoamericanos se conectaron para aprender
sobre los problemas internacionales
en la educación.
Según Machado-Casas, la conferencia pretende crear conciencia sobre lo que esta pasando en
otros países latinoamericanos,
principalmente en el aspecto de la
educación, y crear conexiones para
que se puedan ayudar.
“Una de las cosas que nos falta en
la educación es aprender a colaborar con diferentes países y aprender
a ver cómo podemos conectarnos
en términos de la educación”, explicó Machado-Casas. “Desafortunadamente, muchas veces estamos
trabajando en nuestro círculo y no
nos damos cuenta de laoque está
pasando en diferentes países, ni
ellos en lo que está pasando acá”.
La idea es eliminar fronteras
para que a todas las personas, como
ciudadanos del mundo, les importe
lo que está pasando en Nueva York
al igual que les importe lo que está
pasando en Costa Rica.
La conferencia ofreció pláticas
con panelistas de México, Chile,
Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras
y los Estados Unidos. Así mismo,
los panelistas discutieron maneras
de cómo comunicarse y colaborar
en futuros proyectos para fomentar
la educación.
Además, expertos en educación
animaron a estudiantes a enfocarse en las áreas de trabajo que
están en más demanda, como las
ciencias, la tecnología, ingeniería
y matemáticas.
“La futura fuerza de trabajo
en los Estados Unidos depende
de la educación de los latinos”,
comentó Murillo, quien fundó la
organización LEAD hace 20 años
y la conferencia anual hace 6 años.

Respiratory care student Children’s Hospital opens
conducts research while Medical and Surgical Units
earning bachelor’s degree

Respiratory care student Kelli Hand recently was one of 67
students from 57 universities
selected to participate in Texas
Undergraduate Research Day at
the Capitol in Austin.
Fellow student Amber Marquette, who contributed to
the research study, also participated in the undergraduate
research day at the Capitol.
Hand, who will earn her
bachelor of science in respiratory care this May from The
University of Texas Health
Science Center at San Antonio,
also presented her research
titled “An Observational Study
of Fractional Exhaled Nitric
Oxide Levels in Elementary
School Children Who Have
Been Diagnosed with Asthma,”
at the 2014 conference of the
American Association for Respiratory Care in Las Vegas.
While participating in the Department of Respiratory Care’s
2+2 Asthma Education Program for children with asthma
in local elementary schools,
Hand worked in the diagnostic
area with the young students.
This program is supported by
the McCaffree Humanitarian
Award from the CHEST Foundation.
“We were measuring the
Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide
or FeNO levels by having the
children blow into a disposable mouthpiece attached to the
Aerocrine NiOx device. When
they blew into the device, the
kids could see on an interfacing laptop the effect of their
breath on a girl, who resembles
the main character from the
`Dora the Explorer’ TV show,
in a hot air balloon. When they
inhaled, a sun rose to the top
of the screen, and when they
blew out, they could see the
hot air balloon move across the
screen,” she said.
While the children enjoyed
the colorful graphics on the laptop screen, their FeNO levels
were being measured.
The FeNO levels indicate
the amount of inflammation in
the lungs.
The FeNO test can show if
their asthma is controlled, or,
if is not controlled, then if the
asthma will respond to inhaled
corticosteroids. Inhaled corticosteroids are considered controller medications and, when
used daily, will keep the airway
inflammation down and exacerbations away, Hand explained.
After analyzing the findings,
Hand found 37 percent of the
students had either intermediately controlled or uncontrolled
asthma.
“Unfortunately, these numbers were on par with what
we found in current literature,
when we reviewed published
studies. We know this places
these students at increased risk
for asthmatic attacks, hospitalizations and even death,” she
said. “In theory, all the children
we saw should have been taking
the controller medications, an
inhaled corticosteroid, to best
manage their asthma.”
Because the 2+2 Asthma
Education Program is held after
school and includes parents, the
respiratory care students had
the opportunity to participate
with a pulmonologist discussing the importance of FeNO
level findings with parents and
stress the importance of the
controller medication.
By showing the parents their
child’s FeNO levels and explaining how to manage the
disease by using the correct
controller medication, she said
they hope to improve the percentage of those with controlled
asthma.

could monitor the levels. This
would allow them to reinforce

of the controller medication
regimen. This could be another
tool to help in the care of each
patient with asthma,” she said.
Gardner said they recommend this tool be used to support asthma management and
the FeNO Guidelines.

New Alzheimer’s Association report finds
less than half of people with Alzheimer’s
disease say they were told of the diagnosis

The Alzheimer’s Association 2015 Alzheimer’s Disease
Facts and Figures report, released on March 24. The report
is a comprehensive compilation of national statistics and
information on Alzheimer’s
disease and related dementias.
The report conveys the impact
of Alzheimer’s on individuals,
families, government and the
nation’s health care system.
Since its 2007 inaugural release, the report has become the
preeminent source covering the
broad spectrum of Alzheimer’s
issues. The Facts and Figures
report is an official publication
of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“Today’s release of the 2015
facts and figures on Alzheimer’s paints a clear picture of the
crisis we are facing. The time to
act is now, let’s lead the fight to
end Alzheimer’s” said Edward
C. Camarillo, Alzheimer’s Ambassador Volunteer.
The most shocking discovery was that only 45 percent
of people with Alzheimer’s
disease or their caregivers say
they were told the diagnosis by
their doctor. In contrast, more
than 90 percent of people with
the four most common cancers
(breast, colorectal, lung and
prostate cancer) say they were
told the diagnosis.
The Alzheimer’s Association
2015 Facts and Figures report
also found that people with
Alzheimer’s or their caregivers
were more likely to say they
were told the diagnosis by their
doctor after the disease had become more advanced. According to the Association, this is a
problem because learning the
diagnosis later in the course of
the progressive brain disease
may mean the person’s capacity
to participate in decision making about care plans, or legal
and financial issues, may be
diminished, and their ability to
participate in research or fulfill
lifelong plans may be limited.
One of the reasons most
commonly cited by health care
providers for not disclosing an
Alzheimer’s diagnosis is fear of
causing the patient emotional
distress. However, according
to the new report, “studies
that have explored this issue
have found that few patients
become depressed or have other
long-term emotional problems
because of the [Alzheimer’s]
diagnosis.”
Benefits of Disclosing an
Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
According to the Alzheimer’s
Association, telling the person
with Alzheimer’s the truth
about his or her diagnosis
should be standard practice.
Disclosure can be delivered
in a sensitive and supportive
manner that avoids unnecessary
distress.
“Alzheimer’s affects everybody,” Margaret Barron,
Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Association, San
Antonio and
South Texas Chapter, said.
“Alzheimer’s is non-discriminatory. It’s going to impact us
as a Nation, whether we want
it to or not.”
The benefits of promptly
and clearly explaining a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s have
been established in several
studies. Benefits include better
access to quality medical care
and support services, and the
opportunity for people with
Alzheimer’s to participate in
decisions about their care,
including providing informed
consent for current and future
treatment plans. Knowing the
diagnosis early enables the
person with Alzheimer’s to
get the maximum benefit from
available treatments, and may
also increase chances of participating in clinical drug trials that
help advance research.
The Alzheimer’s Epidemic
and Its Impact
The 2015 Facts and Figures
report provides an in-depth
look at the prevalence, incidence, mortality and economic
impact of Alzheimer’s disease
and other dementias – all of
which continue to rise at staggering rates as the American
population ages.
Prevalence, Incidence and
Mortality
• According to the report, an
estimated 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease
in 2015, including over 340,000
in Texas. Barring the development of medical breakthroughs,
the number of Americans with
Alzheimer’s disease will rise to
13.8 million by 2050.
• Almost half a million (approx. 473,000) people age 65 or
older will develop Alzheimer’s
in the U.S. in 2015. Every
67 seconds, someone in the
U.S. develops Alzheimer’s.
By mid-century, an American
will develop the disease every
33 seconds.
• Two-thirds (3.2 million) of
Americans over age 65 with
Alzheimer’s are women.
• Alzheimer’s disease is the
sixth-leading cause of death in
the U.S., and the fifth-leading
cause of death for those age 65
and older. In Texas, over 5,300
will die with Alzheimer’s in
2015.
• From 2000-2013, the num-
ber of Alzheimer’s deaths
increased 71 percent, while
deaths from other major diseases decreased.
• Heart disease deaths decreased 14 percent; stroke
deaths, 23 percent; HIV deaths,
52 percent; prostate cancer
deaths, 11 percent; and breast
cancer deaths, 2 percent.
Costs and Financial Impact
• Alzheimer’s is the costliest disease to society. Total
2015 payments for caring for
those with Alzheimer’s and
other dementias are estimated
at $226 billion, of which $153
billion is the cost to Medicare
and Medicaid alone.
• Total payments for health
care, long-term care and hospice for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias are
projected to increase to more
than $1 trillion in 2050 (in current dollars).
• In 2014, the 15.7 million
family and other unpaid caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias provided an estimated 17.9
billion hours of unpaid care,
a contribution to the nation
valued at $217.7 billion (with
care valued at $12.17 per hour).
• There are 1,331,000 Alzheimer’s caregivers in Texas providing 1,516,000,000
hours of unpaid care valued at
$18,446,000,000.

Oral drug normalizes potassium
in 98 percent of kidney
patients with side effect

Patients with chronic kidney
disease may be treated with a
class of medications called Renin
Angiotensin Aldosterone System
inhibitors (RAASI’s). Although
these drugs protect the heart and
kidney, a significant percentage
of patients develop a dangerous
side effect — high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia).
Elevated potassium puts patients at risk of death from cardiac arrhythmias. Lacking a drug
to treat the problem, doctors
either stop these beneficial drugs
or may use kidney dialysis to
quickly lower the potassium.
At the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings
this week in Dallas, UT Medicine
San Antonio renal specialist Wajeh Y. Qunibi, M.D., presented
results of two national studies
of ZS-9, a new oral drug that
has been tested in more than
1,000 patients with high blood
potassium. Dr. Qunibi is professor of medicine in the School of
Medicine at The University of
Texas Health Science Center at
San Antonio.
The studies evaluated the effectiveness and safety of ZS-9.
“Dialysis is logistically difficult for patients, requires a
catheter and is expensive,” Dr.
Qunibi said. “In our studies,
patients took a dose by mouth
three times daily with meals,
and potassium normalized in 98
percent of them within 48 hours.

Bureau, 24 million children in
America -- one out of every
three -- live in biological fatherabsent homes. Without nurturing, guiding fathers, young men

to treat hyperkalemia.”
He said between 5 percent and
30 percent of patients, depending
on the type and stage of chronic
kidney disease and whether they
are treated with one or more
RAASI’s, may develop this high
potassium condition.
It is estimated that more than
20 million people in the U.S.
have chronic kidney disease in
varying levels of severity. Risk
increases with age, and the disease is most common in adults
over 70, particularly those with
diabetes.

were reported in recent months
in the New England Journal of
Medicineand the Journal of the
American Medical Association.

Con el cambio climático por
el que estamos pasando en la
región de El Álamo, uno ya no
sabe qué tipo de ropa tener lista
para vestir al siguiente día.
Por igual en el sentido de la
alimentación cotidiana que nos
lleva a buscar los mejores plati­
llos de la temporada invernal y
primavera.
Recientemente, como de costumbre, acudí a mi restaurante
favorito en la preparación de
productos del mar.
Mi preferencia se inclina por
filetes de pescado frito, a los
que acompaño con bastante
juego de limón, dos porciones
de vegetales, una de espinacas
y la otra de ensalada de repollo,
dejando a un lado las bolitas de
maíz fritas por su alto contenido
graso.
Todo esto me llevó a sabo­
rearlo deliciosamente ya que los
dos filetes que se me sirvieron
lucían una textura crujiente.
Lo malo fue que me sobrepase
añadiéndole salsa y crema para
mariscos, con su respectivo cátsup y salsa picante Cholula, lo
que para mi ver era lo suficiente
por mi propio deleite.
Al paso de las horas, mi sistema estomacal no daba muestras
de hostigamiento, todo estaba
funcionando perfectamente,
ninguna señal de malestares,
por lo que estuve disfrutando
de la programación deportiva
nocturna que diferentes canales
transmiten las 24 horas.
A eso de las cinco de la madrugada, repentinamente, comencé
a sentir inicios de vómito, el
estómago se me “revolvió”, lo
que me parecía comienzo de
náuseas de lo que padezco poco.
En lo que canta un gallo,
pude prepararme una taza de
té de manzanilla, sorbiendo
breves tragos para evitar quemaduras de lengua y garganta.
A los pocos minutos, comencé
a sentir alivio y tranquilidad en
mi sistema estomacal. Una vez
más “la otra medicina” como le
llamo al té de manzanilla logró
ayudarme y ponerme de nueva
cuenta en buen estado tanto de
humor como físico.

both have ties to the Spurs. One
a player the other a coach.
Foul Language
NFL players may have to curb
their trash talk on the field. The
NFL league meeting targeted what
can be said on the field. Slurs and
hateful language will be closely
watched. The only item it didn’t
address was the use of from was the
use of the word redskin.

April is a time in San Antonio for Easter, Fiesta, and most
importantly, the Spurs. It’s time
for the Spurs to make a late push
heading into the playoffs.
What seems to have been a
season filled with the burden of
injuries and increasingly tough
competition in the conference,
the Spurs haven’t had the season
like they had last year or the
year before that. But, that hasn’t
stopped this old, wise team from
giving up another run for another
title.
To many, it seems like the
“Race for Seis” is done for this
year but to those who truly know
this team, know that the Spurs are
the quiet guys that make the loudest impact in the NBA playoffs.
This last month of games is their
toughest. And with the standings
in the Western Conference there
is no place set in stone for the
Spurs.
Although currently in sixth
place, if they make a great push
to the finish and win a majority
of their games which include
opponents the Dallas Mavericks,
Portland Trailblazers, and Houston Rockets, they might end up
the third seed in the west.
After Tuesday’s loss against
long-time rival Dallas Mavericks,
the Spurs looked to bounce back
against new rival Oklahoma City
Thunder. Kevin Durant and Serge
Ibaka were out with lingering
injuries and the Spurs got their
revenge from their last game on
Christmas Day with a 130-91
victory.
Tony Parker led the way finishing with 21 points, six rebounds
and six assists. The big key to
their win was keeping Russell
Westbrook from achieving a
double-double and rookie Enes
Kanter from controlling the paint.
Consistency is the biggest
key to success this year as they
haven’t been as consistent as the
past four years. As they get older,
it’s getting tougher for them to
figure out how to win games every night and it doesn’t help that
Coach Pop has given up games
early in the season, games that
could ultimately affect our place
in the standings and who we play
in the first round.
Worst case scenario has been
the eighth seed come the playoffs, but with some last minute
victories this season and Oklahoma City’s struggles, the Spurs
won’t have to deal with the
number one team in the league,
the Golden State Warriors in the
first round.
Our possible opponents in the
first round include Portland, Dallas, and Houston. All three have
been phenomenal this season.
Playing against Houston would
mean we would need to figure out

has performed a multitude of events
throughout San Antonio, producing
outstanding wrestling talent as well
as attracting some of the industry’s
top names. On April 3, things will
be no different.
TASCO Air Conditioning presents the 13th Anniversary Show for
River City Wrestling (RCW) on
Friday, April 3 at the Turner Club,
located at 5555 Duffek Dr. in Kirby
(San Antonio). The event starts at 8

The San Antonio Scorpions
have agreed to terms with Sporting Kansas City of Major League
Soccer (MLS) on terms of a
loan deal for recent U.S. Men’s
National Team call-up Jon Kempin, team President/GM Howard
Cornfield and Head Coach Alen
Marcina recently announced.
“We are very pleased to welcome Jon to the Scorpions for the
upcoming season,” Marcina said.
“Jon has experience at the MLS
level, in CONCACAF Champions League, and recently with
the U.S. Men’s National team.
Jon has very good qualities for
a young goalkeeper and we are
excited to have him as part of our
team this season”
Kempin, 21, is about to start
his sixth professional season
after joining the U.S. Men’s
National Team this past January.
The Leawood, Kansas, native
made five competitive appearances for Sporting Kansas City in
2014, including his debut in MLS
and the CONCACAF Champions
League, while also spending time
on loan at OKC Energy FC of the
United Soccer League.
Kempin earned back-to-back
Save of the Week honors in
his first two MLS appearances
and was named MVP of the
2014 MLS Chipotle Homegrown
Game. In doing so, he became the
youngest at his position to play
in MLS since 2012 and entered
the record books as the youngest goalkeeper to start an MLS
match in Sporting KC’s history.
“We are extremely excited that
Jon will be joining the Scorpions
family in 2015 as he’ll be the
first player in team history to
have experience with the senior
U.S. Men’s National Team,” said
Cornfield. “He is a tremendous
talent that Jurgen Klinsmann has
his eyes on and we think he’ll
make an immediate impact on
our squad.”
A product of the Sporting KC
Academy, Kempin became the
team’s first homegrown player
signing at age 17. He made his
competitive debut during the
2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open
Cup and helped Orlando City SC
claim the USL PRO Championship in 2013, making 34 saves in
nine games while on loan with
the Lions.
The Scorpions have also
agreed to terms with rookie
Tyler Gibson. The midfielder
played college soccer for the
Charlotte 49ers, when he was a
four-year starter and was named
an Academic All-American his
senior year. With the signings,
the Scorpions now have eighteen
players on the roster for 2015:
GK-Sattler, Kempin. D-DeRoux,
James, Zea, Attakora. M-Menji-
var, Castillo, Forbes, Soto, Cruz,

The San Antonio Scorpions,
under Soccer for a Cause, play
in the North American Soccer League (NASL). All home

Twisters F.C. formando campeones en el balompié infantil y juvenil

El plantel de fútbol soccer
Twisters F.C., fundado hace casi
diez años por el futbolista amateur
Francisco Castro (apodado “Paco
Palencia” por su parecido al astro
mexicano Francisco Palencia) con
el respaldo de su esposa señora
Lilia Romero, ha logrado salir adelante. Con el paso del tiempo ambos han sobresalido por su pasión
y dedicación al balompié infantil y
juvenil, deporte que sus hijos Lilú,
de 14 años, y Franky, de 10, lo
han venido practicando desde que
dieron los primeros pasos.
Actualmente, Lilú juega en el
equipo Twisters U-15 (menores
de 15 años) y Franky en Twisters
F.C. U-10, ambos clubes tienen sus
partidos en el complejo deportivo
Mainland Sport Complex, que
cuenta con varias mini canchas
con pasto artificial, donde el domingo 22 de marzo Castro debutó
al equipito Twister F.C. menores
de 6 años (U-6), que juega bajo
el formato de 4 vs.4. Entre ellos
a los debutantes jugadores Sergio
Romero Jr. y Nikolai Carranza, hijos de los futbolistas locales Sergio
Romero Sr. y Armando Carranza,
ambos integrantes del club Pique
F.C., que dirige el señor Alberto
Ramírez “Malancas”.

como futbolista amateur formó
parte de la alineación titular del
Pique, destacando con otras organizaciones en el balompié regional
independiente de San Antonio.
Ahora que los tres son orgullosos padres de familia se volvieron
a reunir con la finalidad de que en
el plantel Twisters F.C. se logre
inculcarle los secretos del fútbol
a Sergio Jr. Nikolai y sus compañeros, que en los primeros partidos jugados el domingo pasado
mostraron sus habilidades sobre la
grama artificial en Mainland Sport
Complex.
Durante las prácticas, Castro se
dio tiempo para dirigir a los nuevos
jugadores indicándoles la importancia de compartirse el balón,
nunca perder de vista la portería
y comportarse disciplinariamente.
De acuerdo a Paco Castro, la
academia Twisters F.C. se encuentra realizando los preparativos
para celebrar con bombo y platillo
su décimo aniversario, que será
durante el mes de octubre 2015.
“De antemano estamos agradecidos por todo el apoyo que se
nos ha dado, tanto por parte de
padres de familia, como de personas que nos han dado su apoyo
para solventar costos que acarrea
este deporte que en casi diez años
nos ha dado la oportunidad de
crear campeones, tanto en lo deportivo como fuera de la cancha.
Muchos de los jugadores que aquí
se calaron ahora son personas
responsables en sus respectivas
actividades y profesiones”, afirmó
Castro.

renglón, dio crédito al gran respaldo que su esposa Lilia Romero, le
ha dado a la academia. “Mi esposa
ha sido el pilar de este plantel, ella
como sobreviviente de cáncer no
ha dejado para nada las actividades
en la promoción y desarrollo del
fútbol que se acostumbra a jugar
en Twisters. Prueba de ello es el
éxito que nuestros hijos han tenido.
Lilú y Franky se han destacado
jugando bajo sus propios estilos
y habilidades. Ambos han sido
contactados por buscadores de
talento, sin embargo ellos serán
quienes decidan lo que más les
convenga. Estamos orgullosos de
ellos y de nuestros equipos que
durante años han puesto muy en
alto el nombre de nuestra academia
que comenzó como SA Twisters,
con un solo equipo, y que por
los buenos resultados que hemos
tenido la cantidad de equipos con
el mismo nombre se ha extendido
con éxito ganando campeonatos en
varias categorías. Todo ello gracias
al apoyo que padres de familia le
han dado a sus hijos, lo cual es un
requisito exigido por Twisters F.C.

Sergio Jr. “Creo que nos quedamos
aquí, ya no le buscaré más donde
pueda comenzar a jugar mi hijo.
Twisters F.C. es el equipo ideal
para su comienzo. Por mi parte lo
estaré entrenando en casa para que
se familiarice pronto con el balón.
Sé que le gusta andarle dando de
patadas al balón, pero ahora todo
irá en serio. Ya nos emocionamos
al ver que habilidades tiene para
seguir adelante jugando en esta
liga donde aprenderá a enfocarse
más al contacto con el balón y
asistir a sus compañeros”, expresó
Romero Sr.
Por su lado, Armando Carranza
y su esposa Mónica, que son dos
grandes seguidores del club Chivas
de Guadalajara, dijo sentirse contento porque su hijo Nikolai encajó
bastante bien con Twisters F.C.
“A Nikolai le gusta practicar,
por ello su debut no fue del todo
malo, estuvo activo en la defensiva, por lo que esperamos que
siga aprendiendo bajo la dirección
del buen amigo Paco”, comentó
Carranza.
“Yo le pegué al balón muy pocas
veces. Ellos (sus compañeros) han
tenido más tiempo practicando
para darle de patadas al balón. Mi
papá y yo vamos a entrenar juntos
para que yo aprenda a echar goles”,
contó Sergio Jr.

La última fecha del rol regular fue
cancelada el sábado 21 de marzo en
Liga Regional Veteranos Carramán,
que durante su campaña invernal se
ha visto afectada por las buenas acciones de la madre naturaleza que ha
dejado el terreno de juego anegado
tras sorpresivas lluvias en los fines
de semana.
De acuerdo al pronóstico del
clima, este fin de semana no hay
señales de lluvia o descenso en la
temperatura ambiental; por lo que
el presidente Gonzalo Carramán
tiene programados tres partidos con
los que se dirá adiós a la temporada
invernal jugada en honor de los
esposos Linda y Roberto Garza,
propietarios del club Broncos de
Reynosa.
El primer cotejo a celebrarse a las
10 a.m. en el diamante del Colt 45
Baseball Field lo jugarán las novenas de Broncos y el actual monarca
Astros, que comandan Jaime Guerrero y José Montes, quienes ya
tienen boleto en mano para competir

Today’s Catholic
Sisters from Latin America are
making a difference in eleven
underserved church communities
scattered throughout the United
States, thanks to a program by
Catholic Extension funded by a
$3 million grant from the Conrad
Hilton Foundation.
On March 17, over 30 of these
women religious came together
for a retreat at the Moye Retreat
Center in Castroville to share their
stories, get to know one another
and renew their commitment to
the marginalized and primarily
Hispanic church populations they
serve.
That this event took place at
Moye was especially fitting as 100
years ago (from 1915 to 1918) it
served as St. Philip Neri Seminary,
funded by Catholic Extension to
assist Mexican seminarians who
fled persecution in Mexico for
their faith.
The sisters on these U.S. assignments come in threes from
their congregations, which are
primarily from Mexico, but also
from Colombia, El Salvador
and Puerto Rico. They currently
serve parishes in the dioceses of
Bismarck, N.D., Charleston, S.C.,
Des Moines, Iowa, Kalamazoo,
Mich., Little Rock, Ark., Monterey, Calif., Richmond, Va.,
San Bernardino, Calif., Yakima,
Wash., and Tyler and San Angelo
in Texas.
“The U.S. Latin American
Sisters Exchange Program,” said
Vice President of Mission Joseph
Boland, “enables sisters from
Latin America to be able to come
to the United States to do pastoral
work in areas where there is a large
presence of the Hispanic community, but where the church does not
yet have a strong presence, at least
institutionally and magisterially.”
The hope in creating this program was, he explained, that the
program would benefit the sisters
as well, by extending educational
opportunities not only to study
English, but learn about U.S.
culture and gain experience in
leadership that they will take back
to their native countries when the
five year program ends.
“As Latin American sisters,
they’re obviously formed by their
experience as Latin Americans,”
related Boland, “and so we see in
them many of the same attributes
that we recognize in Pope Francis
— a love for the poor, a real commitment and dedication to lifting
up families and empowering
lay people to do the work of the
church in the trenches.”
While working primarily with
immigrant populations, the sisters’ work touches others in their
host parishes as well, giving them
the experience of serving in a
multicultural environment. They
have also learned much through
special immersion classes at the
Mexican American Catholic College (MACC).
“MACC has been a critical
partner for us in making this
initiative successful,” Boland
added, “and they’ve really adapted
their programming to make sure
that these sisters go back to their
dioceses very well prepared, not
only in the language but in terms
of culture and cultural sensitivity
to the various realities that they’re
going to encounter when they get
out in the field.”
That morning at Moye, each trio
of sisters spoke to the group on
their congregation and its charism
and on what they are doing and
have encountered in the parishes
in which they work. All spoke in
glowing terms of the welcome
they received. For the sisters in
Bismarck and Kalamazoo, the
biggest culture shock was snow
— and lots of it! The Kalamazoo
sisters had brought no winter
clothing, so the pastor took them
shopping and got them properly
outfitted.
“We have been welcomed, appreciated by the whole diocese,”
said a sister from Mexico. A missionary sister from Puerto Rico
commented that parishioners were
always asking if the sisters needed
anything. “When we go to their
houses,” she said, “they open not
just the door, but their lives, their
story.”
The sisters’ ministries have
included formation for catechists
and eucharistic ministers, work
with children and young adults and
a variety of parish ministries, including Cursillistas, pre-baptismal
classes, classes for parents while
their children receive catechesis,
preparation for Quinceañeras and
for Lent, posadas and retreats.
They lead groups in praying the
rosary, teach Bible study, visit the
sick and those in nursing homes.
“We want to take the people to
heaven and reach out with Christ,”
said a nun from El Salvador.
“There are many people who have
taken God out of their lives and
have turned God into something
material,” said a sister working in
the Diocese of San Angelo. “So
that is one of our greatest challenges — to make our charism
more dynamic and implant it into
the communities, to help everyone
to experience that great love of
God and that we are his sons and
daughters.”
One told of the immigrants they
work with living in fear of persecution; another spoke of dealing
with young people drawn into
gangs. In the Diocese of San Bernardino, a sister recounted putting
into practice Pope Francis’ call “to
go out into the periphery, to put
attention on youth, to rescue the
Christian values and to be a bridge
of all cultures in our community.”
To this end, they enlisted a team of
lay missionaries in evangelization,
holding weekly formation classes.
“They are still going house by
house to knock on the doors, even
though we’re not there,” the sister
related, “and we see the fruits of
our work.”
Other effects of the sisters’
presence have been felt as well. In
her address to the sisters at Moye,
Sister Rosemarie Nassif, SSND,
director of the Catholic Sisters
Initiative for the Conrad Hilton
Foundation, noted.
“Many of the people that you
will encounter have never been in
touch with a sister before.” Later,
Sister Maria Yelitza Ayala, one of
the Hermanas Dominicas de Fatima sisters in the Tyler Diocese,
related how a 12-year-old girl in
one of their parishes had told her
that before the sisters’ coming she
did not know what she wanted to
be. “But now I know I want to be
a sister,” she told Sister Yelitza.
“Women religious,” said Boland, “are so often the face of the
church in the poor communities of
America. So often you find them
working in the shadows, just doing
absolutely tremendous work, and
if we can play our part to help shed
light on this wonderful experience
called religious life, consecrated
life, that to me would be another
wonderful benefit of this initiative
that we’re sponsoring.”

“Estoy muy preocupada, con
depresión. Solo pienso en suici-
qué hacer con esto que siento”.
Este es el consejo que le dio
mi esposa:
“Estimada amiga:
“Lamentamos (tener que
decirle) que usted no era importante para (ese hombre).
Hay un dicho que sostiene que
los hombres se valen del amor
para obtener el placer sexual,
mientras que las mujeres se
valen del placer para obtener
el amor. Él logró convencerla
de que la amaba porque quería
tener relaciones sexuales con
usted. Y usted accedió porque
quería sentir su amor. Él obtuvo
lo que quería, pero usted solo
obtuvo decepción y tristeza. Él
ahora puede buscar a la próxima
mujer vulnerable y crédula que
se deje seducir por sus mentiras.
Usted tiene que dejar de hacerse
ilusiones de que él de veras la
amaba. Él se aprovechó de usted
y la despojó de su virginidad, y
ahora usted tiene la oportunidad
de decidir si también permitirá
que la despoje de su felicidad en
y culpándose, o si no deja de esperar que él vuelva a su lado, entonces no va a mejorar su estado de
ánimo. En ese caso, creemos que
usted debe consultar a un médico
de inmediato y contarle acerca
de sus pensamientos de suicidio.
“En cambio, si usted quiere

ayudarla. La culpa que siente se
debe a que usted sabe que lo que
hizo es indebido. La manera de
olvidarse de la mala conducta
pasada y comenzar de cero es
pedirle a Jesucristo que forme
parte de su vida y perdone todos
sus pecados. Cuando Cristo nos
perdona, también se olvida de los
pecados que nos ha perdonado.
Ya no nos considera culpables.
Así que para Él será como si
nunca hubiéramos pecado. Eso
la ayudará a que vuelva a sentirse
limpia. Y el saber que Cristo la
ama y quiere ayudarla en su diario vivir le dará la seguridad y la
confianza emocional que no ha
tenido hasta ahora”.
Luto por Don Pepe, fundador
de la Charrería en el país

de San Antonio se encuentran
de luto por el fallecimiento
del fundador de la Charrería
en Estados Unidos: José de
Jesús Diaz, a quien con cariño
y respeto le decían Don Pepe,
nacido el 4 de mayo de 1919
en el Rancho Palos Verdes ,
Mazamitla Jalisco, México.
José de Jesús Diaz falleció
este 19 de marzo del 2015 a la
edad de 96 años.
Don Pepe era un auténtico
charro de corazón, ya que todas
las “suertes” de la charrería las
aprendió en su rancho; mismas
que después trajo a San Antonio, allá por el año de 1957
cuando casó con Rosa Guajardo
en lo que fue la primera ceremonia charra en la Catedral
de San Fernando.
Su amor por la charrería se
extendió a otros estados del

Vegas, donde su espectáculo
se extiende por varias semanas
y es un gran maestro de las
suertes charras, incluyendo el

uno de sus caballos.

SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. San Antonio Water System, 2800 U.S. Highway 281 North,
San Antonio, Texas 78212, ha aplicado a la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental del Estado de Texas
(TCEQ por sus siglas en inglés) para la renovación del permiso No. WQ0010137008 para la descarga de contaminantes del sistema de eliminación (TPDES por sus siglas en inglés), que autoriza
la descarga de aguas residuales domésticas tratadas en un flujo promedio anual no debe exceder de
46.000.000 galones por día. TCEQ recibió esta solicitud el 21 de agosto de 2014.
La planta se encuentra en 13496 Blue Wing Road, aproximadamente 1,5 millas sur de la intersección
de Southton Road y Blue Wing Road en el Condado de Bexar, Texas 78223. El tratado de efluente es

aguas residuales sin proveer una oportunidad de una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso.
ACCIÓN DEL DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO. El Director Ejecutivo puede emitir una aprobación final de la
solicitud a menos que exista un pedido antes del plazo de vencimiento de una audiencia administrativa
de lo contencioso o se ha presentado un pedido de reconsideración. Si un pedido ha llegado antes
del plazo de vencimiento de la audiencia o el pedido de reconsideración ha sido presentado, el Director Ejecutivo no emitirá una aprobación final sobre el permiso y enviará la solicitud y el pedido a los
comisionados de la TECQ para consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
LISTA DE CORREO. Si somete comentarios públicos, un pedido para una audiencia administrativa
de lo contencioso o una reconsideración de la decisión del Director Ejecutivo, la Oficina del Secretario
Principal enviará por correo los avisos públicos en relación con la solicitud. Además, puede pedir que

SOLICITUD Y DECISIÓN PRELIMINAR. East Central Independent School District, 6634 New
Sulphur Springs Road, San Antonio, Texas 78263, ha solicitado a la Comisión de Calidad Ambiental del Estado de Texas (TCEQ) una` renovación Tejas de Eliminacion de Descargas Contaminantes
Permiso (TPDES) del Sistema No. WQ0013701001, que las autoridades de la descarga de aguas
residuales domesticas tratadas con un flujo promedio diario no exceda de 60,000 galones por dia. La
TCEQ recibió esta solicitud el August 25, 2014.
La instalacion está ubicada en 7173 Farm-to-Market Road 1628, en el condado de Bexar, Texas 78263.
El efluente tratado es descargado a un tributario sin nombre; de allí a Calaveras Creek Dam No. 5
embalse; de allí a un tributario sin nombre; de allí a Chupaderas Creek; de allí a Calaveras Lago; de
allí a Calaveras Creek; de allí a la parte superior del rio San Antonio en el segmento No. 1911 de la
Cuenca del Rio San Antonio. Los usos del agua que reciben no clasificados son uso de vida acuatica
minimo para el afluente sin nombre y alto uso de vida acuatica para el deposito Calaveras Creek Dam
No. 5 embalse. Los usos designados pare el segmento No. 1911 son altos uso de vida acuatica y la
recreación de contacto primario. Todos las determinaciones son preliminares y recreación de contacto
primario. Todos las deteminaciones son preliminares y están sujetas a revisión y/o revisiones adicionales.
El Director Ejecutivo de la TCEQ ha completado la revisión técnica de la solicitud y ha preparado
un borrador del permiso. El borrador del permiso, si es aprobado, establecería las condiciones bajo
las cuales la instalación debe operar. El Director Ejecutivo ha tomado una decisión preliminar que si

recibir correspondencia en el futuro; debe identificar un miembro del grupo que sería afectado
adversamente por la planta o la actividad propuesta; debe proveer la información ya indicada
anteriormente con respecto a la ubicación del miembro afectado y la distancia de la planta o
actividad propuesta; debe explicar como y porqué el miembro sería afectado y como los intereses que el grupo desea proteger son pertinentes al propósito del grupo.
Después del cierre de los períodos para los pedidos y comentarios, el Director Ejecutivo enviará la
solicitud y los pedidos para reconsideración o por una audiencia administrativa de lo contenciosos a
los Comisionados de la TCEQ para su consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
La Comisión otorgará solamente una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los hechos
reales disputados del caso que son pertinentes y esenciales para la decisión de la Comisión sobre la
solicitud. Además, la Comisión sólo otorgará una audiencia administrativa de lo contencioso sobre los
asuntos que fueron presentados antes del plazo de vencimiento y que no fueron retirados posteriormente. Si ciertos criterios se cumplen, la TCEQ puede actuar sobre una solicitud para renovar
un permiso para descargar aguas residuales sin proveer una oportunidad de una audiencia
administrativa de lo contencioso.]
ACCIÓN DEL DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO. El Director Ejecutivo puede emitir una aprobación final de la
solicitud a menos que exista un pedido antes del plazo de vencimiento de una audiencia administrativa
de lo contencioso o se ha presentado un pedido de reconsideración. Si un pedido ha llegado antes
del plazo de vencimiento de la audiencia o el pedido de reconsideración ha sido presentado, el Director Ejecutivo no emitirá una aprobación final sobre el permiso y enviará la solicitud y el pedido a los
Comisionados de la TECQ para consideración en una reunión programada de la Comisión.
LISTA DE CORREO. Si somete comentarios públicos, un pedido para una audiencia administrativa
de lo contencioso o una reconsideración de la decisión del Director Ejecutivo, la Oficina del Secretario
Principal enviará por correo los avisos públicos en relación con la solicitud. Ademas, puede pedir que
la TCEQ ponga su nombre en una or mas de las listas correos siguientes (1) la lista de correo permanente para recibir los avisos de el solicitante indicado por nombre y número del permiso específico
y/o (2) la lista de correo de todas las solicitudes en un condado especifico. Si desea que se agrega

Leonel N. Ojeda, de 12 años de edad, amante de la pesca, acompañado de su papá Leonel Ojeda, en
el sitio “Red Dot Pier” (South Padre Island Dr.), el sábado 14 de marzo capturó un bello ejemplar
de la especie “Black Drum”, que pesó 48 libras. Poco le duró el gusto, ya que por reglamentación
del Departamento de Pesca tuvo que dejarlo ir a su hábitat en la rivera del Golfo de México. Peces
de esta especie son difícil de capturarlos, quienes se dedican a la pesca deportiva en raras ocasiones
logran pescar uno de estos ejemplares. En caso de capturar uno de ellos, si llega a pesar menos de
15 libras se les permite conservarlo. “Por el peso no me dejaron quedármelo, lo tuve que echar al
mar. Para mí fue una gran satisfacción regresarlo al agua”, apuntó Leonel, quien es el orgullo de

Jovencita de San Antonio recibe ovación en “La Voz Kids”

Portando un vestido colorido
y representando a San Antonio,
Isabel Marie Sánchez llegó arrasando
al programa de canto de Telemundo
“La Voz Kids” poniendo a todos
de pie en ovación dentro del estudio de Universal Orlando Resort.
La jovencita de 11 años logró
que los tres coaches, Natalia
Jimenez, Daddy Yankee, y Pedro
Fernández, giraran su silla durante las “Audiciones a Ciegas” para
pedirle que se uniera a su equipo.
“Cuando vi que las sillas de
Natalia Jiménez y Daddy Yankee
se voltearon, estaba súper emocionada y mi corazón empezó a
latir bien rápido”, recuenta Isabel
vía telefónica a La Prensa de San
Antonio. “Me dije, ‘ahora solo
tengo que convencer a Pedro
Fernández que volteara su silla
también’ y seguí cantando”.
Antes de terminar la canción,
Pedro Fernández presionó el
botón para girar su silla.
“¡Fue increíble!”, dijo Isabel,
quien reza y besa su medallita de
la “Virgencita y Jesús” antes de
subir a cualquier escenario.
Al terminar la canción, los
coaches la felicitaron y cada uno
le pidió que se uniera a su equipo.
“Has cantado como una diosa”,
le dijo Natalia Jiménez.
El reguetonero puertorriqueño Daddy Yankee no se quedó
atrás con los piropos diciéndole:
“Tienes el paquete completo”.
Pedro Fernández le dijo a la
pequeña cantante: “Yo estoy convencido de que tienes un potencial
impresionante y yo necesito esa
voz tan linda en mi equipo.”
A fin de cuentas, Isabel optó
por unirse al equipo de Natalia
Jiménez. Según la jovencita,

tomó esa difícil decisión porque
le fascina la gran presencia en el
escenario de la cantante española
y su rango vocal. “Ella es súper
maravillosa y me gustaría aprender
de ella y ser así algún día”, contó
Isabel.
Carlos Sánchez admitió haberse
sentido un poco sorprendido por
la decisión de su hija, ya que
él desde niño cantaba todas las
canciones de Pedro Fernández y
por mucho tiempo ha sido el ídolo
de ambos. “Yo pensé que iba a
escoger a Pedro Fernández, pero
no quise influenciarla”, explicó
Sánchez. Le aconsejé que se
informara bien sobre cada coach
para que ella decidiera lo que su
corazón le indicara”.
Al parecer, Isabel siempre ha
hecho lo que le dicta el corazón.
Por ejemplo, escogió “Cucurrucucú paloma” porque le encantaba
a su tía materna, Jilma Núñez,
quien recientemente perdió la
batalla contra el cáncer. “Cuando
la canté (en “La Voz Kids”) lo
hice con todo mi corazón porque
pensé: ‘Dios mío, mi tía está ahí
frente a mí’”. También agregó
que su máximo objetivo es ayu-
dar a personas con cáncer. “Sería
genial que se encontrara una
cura para el cáncer porque si eso
sucede ya no sufrirá tanta gente
que se encuentra en esa posición.
Me encanta ayudar a la gente”.
Esa esencia altruista ha mantenido a Isabel muy ocupada, ya
que seguido dona su voz y tiempo
a diferentes organizaciones caritativas y eventos.
Originaria de Chicago, en los
dos años pasaditos que lleva
en San Antonio, donde su carrera emprendió con viento en
popa, Isabel se mantiene ocupada
cantando en eventos deportivos,
políticos y cívicos. Como si eso
fuera poco, cada que puede le
canta a pacientes de cáncer, veteranos
guerra y a cualquiera que ocupe
de una sonrisa.
Antes de despedirse por teléfono, la aspirante a artista y
estudiante de Young Women’s
Leadership Academy, quiso dar
gracias a todos sus seguidores.
En especial, quiso agradecer a
Margo Uriegas (Ayuda), Fernando Reyes (Presidente de Fiesta
Comission) y Roberto Treviño
(Gibson Guitars).
“También me gustaría dar gracias a La Voz Kids y mi coach
por la experiencia tan maravillosa, no puedo esperar a seguir
continuando en la competencia”,
concluyó Isabel.
El tercer episodio de las audiciones a ciegas de La Voz Kids se
trasmitirá el domingo 29 de marzo
por la cadena Telemundo.
En la etapa final del programa
la teleaudiencia tendrá la oportunidad de votar por su cantante

de los años 50 en el cine mexicano, presidió una conferencia
con los medios de comunicación
hispanos este miércoles 25 de
marzo para anunciar el proyecto
de presentar en diversas ciudades
el país un holograma de este
actor fallecido en un accidente
aéreo el 15 de abril de 1957.
La reunión con los medios se
realizó en Losoya Conference
Center, donde fue presentado el
diseñador gráfico Javier Salgado,
comisionado para el diseño del
retrato digital de Pedro Infante
por la firma publicitaria Vision
International LLC, en coordinación con la agencia First Us
Entertainment LLC.
Los organizadores todavía
no tienen fechas o localidades
donde presentarán el espectáculo del holograma, en el cual
Lupita Infante también formará
parte. Esta información estará

Pedro Infante fue uno de las
más importantes figuras del
cine mexicano de mediados del
siglo pasado, y quien dejó un
grato recuerdo en las generaciones de esa época, a las que
debe sumarse el público de San

actress also amassed a collection
of objects ranging from works of
art by Miro, Goya, Picasso and
Henry Moore to trinkets of questionable taste, all of which are
now going up for auction.
With her cat-like grace, Bacall
not only captivated film-goers
in movies such as “Key Largo”
and “The Big Sleep”, she also
dedicated time to collecting art,
although as one of the men in her
life, Frank Sinatra, might have put
it, she did it her way.
“This is more the property of
a collector who happened to be
a celebrity rather than a celebrity
auction,” Bonhams Vice President Jon King told Efe.
The auction house expects
the items on offer in the March
31-April 1 auction to generate
around $3 million, which is not
high considering the number of
lots, 740. This is what makes the
sale extraordinary.
“She didn’t care if it was $10 or
$100,000. It had to appeal to her.
If she liked it, if it appealed to her,
she would collect it,” King said.
Henry Moore sculptures and

El salsero puertorriqueño Víctor Manuelle estrenó el video
musical de su nuevo tema “Algo
le pasa a mi héroe”, que es una
canción dedicada a su padre y
a todos aquellos que batallan el
Alzheimer.
El martes de esta semana, el
cantante repartió gratuitamente
en San Juan (Puerto Rico) copias de su nuevo sencillo, según
reportó EFE.
“Es uno de los días más importantes de mi vida. No había
analizado bien esta promoción,
pero cuando me levanté, me di
cuenta de que hice algo bien
positivo. Creo que estoy creando
conciencia y con un objetivo”,
dijo el artista a la agencia de
noticias.
El salsero se ubicó en un semáforo de la Avenida Roosevelt de
San Juan para repartir las copias
de la canción, grabada en forma
de balada y no a ritmo de salsa.
Según se sabe, el padre de
Manuelle tiene 66 años y padece
de Alzheimer desde hace más de
diez. El progenitor está en una
etapa muy avanzada y necesita el
cuidado de un supervisor.

“Reconoce y no habla, pero
por los gestos de su mirada, sabemos lo que nos dice”, expresó el
intérprete de “Dile a ella”, “Que

Víctor Manuelle ha ganado
muchos premios y reconocimien-
tos a su talento, incluyendo los
Premios Billboard a la Música
Latina, Premio ASCAP a la

that she will not return to direct
the sequel.
“Directing Fifty Shades of Grey
has been an intense and incredible
journey for which I am hugely
grateful. I have Universal to thank
for that,” Taylor-Johnson said in a
statement posted by Deadline on
Wednesday.
“I forged close and lasting relationships with the cast, producers
and crew and most especially,
with Dakota (Johnson) and Jamie
(Dornan),” she said.
“While I will not be returning to
direct the sequels, I wish nothing
but success to whosoever takes on
the exciting challenges of films
two and three,” Taylor-Johnson
added.
The film adaptation of the first
book of the E.L. James trilogy
earned more than $500 million
worldwide.

new film is yet to be confirmed,

924,000 adults 18 to 49, delivering a 60 percent and a 39 percent
growth in its time slot versus the

premiere of “La Biblia” ranks as
Telemundo’s highest-rated premiere at 8pm among total viewers,
and second-highest among adults
18-49.
Locally, “La Biblia” ranked #1 in
its time slot, regardless of language,
in Miami, among total viewers and
adults 18-49. The miniseries also
was the #1 most social Spanishlanguage program during primetime, according to Nielsen Social.

Bradley Cooper to debut as director
with ‘A Star is Born’ remake
EFE - Four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper is to make
his directorial debut with a
remake of the famous musical
‘A Star is Born,’ a project that
Clint Eastwood had previously
set his eyes on.
According to The Hollywood
Reporter Tuesday, Warner Bros
studio is negotiating with Cooper to get him aboard. Beyonce
was roped in to play the female
lead until her pregnancy disrupted all plans.
Eastwood had been attached
to the production since 2011, but
after a forced delay due to the
singer’s pregnancy, he decided
to take on other projects and
filmed ‘Jersey Boys.’
The movie will be a remake
of a 1937 film, starring Janet
Gaynor and Fredric March,
which narrates how an alcoholic, fading movie star helps
a young aspiring actress to
achieve fame.
According to other publications, Cooper is to also feature

remade twice - in 1954, starring

and in 1976, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in
lead roles.
Cooper was nominated for an
Oscar in three consecutive years
for his roles in ‘Silver Linings
Playbook’ (2012), ‘American
Hustler’ (2013) and ‘American
Sniper’ (2014) for which he was
also nominated as a producer.

SAHS y Sheraton Gunter Hotel se
unen apoyar a animales en necesidad

En esta “Barkery” se puede ladrar
y también se pueden comer galletitas. Y con este nombre es que el
Sheraton Gunter Hotel San Antonio
abrió un espacio dentro de sus instalaciones esta semana en el evento de
anuncio de su asociación con San
Antonio Humane Society (SAHS).
Durante la Puppy Hour realizada
el martes 24 de marzo por la tarde,
los visitantes pudieron disfrutar de
aperitivos en las instalaciones del
hotel, ubicado en el downtown,
acompañados de sus mascotas.
Asimismo, SAHS aprovechó para
presentar a cachorritos listos para
adopción, brindar información de
sus servicios y sobre sus próximos
eventos en Fiesta 2015.
Como punto importante de esta
alianza para apoyar a los perros y
gatos alojados en las instalaciones de
SAHS (4804 Fredericksburg Road
, San Antonio, TX 78229) estuvo el
lanzamiento de la “Barkery” y sus
productos.

visitantes pueden adquirir galletas
para perros (también comestibles

Sheraton Gunter.
Martínez explicó que en este
momento se ofrecen galletas de
cuatro sabores, entre ellos pescado,
res y bacon. Y que además, están
a la venta bowties para mascotas,
coasters, camisetas y otros accesorios bajo la marca “Barkery”.
Felicia Mercado, de comunicaciones de San Antonio Humane Society,
explicó que el hotel donará el 20 por
ciento de las ventas de “Barkery”
para beneficiar a los animales de
SAHS, además que el 50 por ciento
de la venta de tiquetes para asistir
a esta Puppy Hour también serían
destinados a la institución.
Asimismo, San Antonio Humane
Society presentó la medalla y nuevos diseños de camisetas para Fiesta
2015. Además de anunciar que la
Coronación del Rey Fido 2015 se
llevará a cabo el sábado 18 de abril
de 10 a 11 de la mañana en el Grand
Hyatt San Antonio.
