For the month of December we pray for those involved with Lifeteen, Edge, Elementary Faith formation, Confirmation Spanish Youth Group and Los Niño's de Valor Blessed Advent! 3rd Sunday of Advent Luke 3:10-18 Remember last week where we read about this crazy man John "crying out in the desert"? Well, this week we read about what the people of his time wondered about him. They all asked him "What should we do?" The crowds were asking, the tax collectors were asking, the soldiers were asking. And he answers each of them according to the temptation of their particular state in life. To the crowds he says, share of your abundance. To the tax collectors he says, stop taking more money for yourselves. Only collect from the people what is proscribed. To the soldiers he says, stop extorting money. And so, what must we do to prepare? I ask myself if I am sharing from even the little that I think I have. Do I charge more than a fair price for my work? If I lend money to anyone, do I expect too much more in return? I challenge myself this week, and I challenge you, to take some time and think about how we are preparing for the coming birth of Christ, in history, in today's world, and in the future when he will come to bring all of creation back to the Father. Msgr. Mike Msgr. Mike has been recuperating at home. He will not be active in the parish just yet, but hopes to return by the beginning of January Please continue to Pray for Msgr. Mike PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS God of Love, You show your favor for us and grace us through baptism. Bless us with the courage to carry out the mission of Jesus. Grant us open and generous hearts to see the needs of others and to respond with compassion. May the Church be blest with women and men who are dedicated to You through marriage, the single life, the diaconate, priesthood, and the consecrated life. It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselves to You now and forever. Amen. Amen Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Oración de Papa Francisco para Jubileo de la Misericordia Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. The suggestions that are offered are designed to help the host and hostess show off a stunning atmosphere without spending days and weeks preparing for a party or dinner that may only last an hour or two. Often everyday items are transformed with a swatch of fabric, a candle, or some evergreens. Ingenious cutting makes plain vegetables or ordinary hors d'oeuvres into holiday delights. The operative concepts in getting people to buy these idea books and read them are: quick, easy, and practical. In the Gospel today, John the Baptist offers quick, easy, and practical ideas for those who would prepare for the coming of the Christ. As St. Luke tells us, people in his day were filled with expectation. John was pretty straightforward in what he thought they should do: If you have two coats, give one away to somebody who doesn't have one; be equitable in your dealings with others; don't push people around; don't lie about people. In modern parlance, we might say that John the Baptist was asking people to act justly in the world. Unfortunately, today we don't often think of justice as quick, easy, or practical. Our understanding of justice is more often colored by the contemporary legal system than by the divine laws of the covenant that binds God and his people. There was a reciprocity and equanimity in the covenantal relationship. There were duties to be fulfilled on each side. John was asking that those who were filled with expectation for the coming of the Messiah would set themselves aright with one another so that God's covenant would find full expression in the relationships that bind people to God and to one another. Justice is really about leveling things out. And when you think about it, that is pretty easy. If you have more, then you share. My Heart is sorrowful, Jesus said, because even chosen souls do not understand the greatness of My mercy. Their relationship [with Me] is, in certain ways, imbued with mistrust. Oh, how much that wounds My Heart! Remember My Passion, and if you do not believe My words, at least believe My wounds. We tend to think that if we ask for help, it is a sign of weakness. So we try to keep our struggles hidden, stuffed deep inside. However, that’s not God’s plan. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” God wants us to care for others—and allow others to care for us in our time of need. If you’re sad or struggling inside, don’t suffer alone. Ask for help. We’ve got a team of Stephen Ministers who are ready to listen, care, encourage, pray, and help you through a tough time. If you make forgiveness a habit – for everything from major mistakes to little annoyances you will keep resentment from growing. CALL – DO NOT TEXT BUT CALL your spouse two times randomly today and let them know how you care for them, love them and appreciate them. It is easy to get busy with life and forget to let our true love know how much we really love them. Love them as if today is your last day! GRATITUDE – Make a gratitude journal for your spouse by writing what he or she does that you are grateful for. During times of wanting to fight and argue, bite your tongue and read that journal before you criticize in a moment of frustration. ADORATION – Take a few minutes during the week to stop at a church and sit before the Tabernacle, simply be with Christ, the merciful. Thank God for your spouse and list the ways in which you are thankful. If you can, go to adoration together as a couple. PRAY – Praying together helps a couple stay together! Pray a Rosary every night before bed with your spouse. Allow God back into your marriage! Child Advocates San Antonio Be the voice for an abused or neglected child. Reflection ~ Sure Bet One time, as I was walking through a casino in Las Vegas, I heard a lot of cheering and commotion coming from a roulette table. Curiosity got the best of me, and I wandered over to see what was going on. I got there just in time to see the roulette operator slide three large stacks of chips toward a rather inebriated woman. She was enjoy herself immensely, all the while readily admitting that she had no idea what she was doing. The crowd gathered to watch the spectacle because she had won six times in a row, each time betting all her winnings again on red. With another loud cackle she yelled, "Put 'em all on red!" and she slid all her chips onto the red marker. Unfortunately, the woman was oblivious to the odds that dictated sooner or later she would lose. Sure enough, on the next spin, she lost--everything. Dumbfounded, she staggered from the table, her exuberance turned to disbelief. Unfortunately, most of us approach life much like that woman approached gambling. We try all different strategies to solve our problems and to get ahead, usually in vain. Some of us are fortunate enough to finally stumble on the one strategy that will always win: Christ. Nothing else truly works. Nothing else can help. Nothing else can save. Nothing. Only Christ. We are supposed to put it all on Christ. He is the only sure bet. Put everything on Christ--your worries, your fears, your dreams and your hopes, everything. When you do, you will win every time. Whatever gains I had, these I have come to consider a loss because of Christ. More than that, I even consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ. - Philippians 3:7-8 Copyright 2014, (c) Vince Frese For more resources visit DivorcedCatholic.org and vincefrese.com. Pl Please Contact Vincent Lewis K of o C Youth Activities Director 210-995-5127 ~ TIME ~ TALENT ~ TREASURE ~ HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH ~ TIME ~ TALENT ~ TREASURE ~ Everyday Stewardship Pope Francis has begun this Jubilee Year of Mercy because, as he has stated, mercy is "the beating heart of the Gospel." He states that the purpose of the year is to "reach everyone, both believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!" This is a profound statement because he is saying that mercy is for all humanity, not just those who are Christ's disciples, and we are not a people waiting for a coming kingdom, for the kingdom of God is already in our midst. When John the Baptist was speaking to his followers he spoke about showing mercy to others by giving away your second coat and not collecting more from others than what they owe you. But how much greater that mercy needs to be now that we live in a world redeemed by the power of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection! Certainly, the principles of stewardship can assist us in truly being fruitful in this jubilee year. As good everyday stewards, we should not only see the second coat as something we should give away, but indeed the first coat is not truly ours either. For it would not exist except for the generosity of our God. Since we are only stewards of all we have instead of owners, our ability to be generous greatly increases. We then begin to see that we have many tools at our disposal to offer mercy to those in need. This year we have the chance to really put into practice that which we claim to be true. As mature disciples we are to answer God's call regardless of the cost. During this jubilee year may we now more than ever offer ourselves freely to do his will. Aging religious need your help. In the United States today, there are more than 33,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. These religious worked tirelessly in Catholic schools, hospitals, and agencies, usually for little to no pay. As a result, many religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to today's collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nursing care, and more. Please be generous. Join Holy Trinity's moms group Mothering with Grace Friday, Dec. 18 for a roundtable discussion "A Missionary's Journey through Marriage and Motherhood." Our speaker will be Meredith Hanna, a wife and mother of four who also served as a missionary for nine years in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Come from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the St. Simon Room of the Faith Formation Building. Childcare will be provided for children over the age of 1, but you must RSVP by Monday, Dec. 14, to guarantee a spot. We are a group of moms working towards a closer relationship with God. Moms who strive to ignite a passion for God in our children and families. Moms who know we can't do it alone, support each other and need each other. Moms who band together for spiritual growth, social activities, and service projects in an effort to make a difference in this world, one tiny face at a time. We meet first and third Fridays of the month. (except holidays) 9:30AM-11:30AM, Please contact Emily Schuelke or Bridie Chaudoir at [email protected] if you are interested or would like more information. Sean generosos.
