First Sunday of Advent ~ November 29, 2015
Treasures from our Traditions Advent is a time rich in family traditions. Many of them have been so effectively absorbed into our culture that their religious origins are hidden. Some of us will set candles in our windows tonight. The custom began in Ireland during the so‐called “penal” days, extending from 1691 to the “Catholic Emancipation” in 1829 and beyond. There were harsh penalties and fines for not attending the government church. Priests were forced into hiding, but people were resourceful and determined in guarding their faith. At Christmas, Irish families, particularly in the countryside, placed a lighted candle in the cottage window and left the door unlatched, hoping that a priest might come by and celebrate the Christmas Mass for them. The possibility of the Mass coming into the family home gave rise to other Irish customs at the beginning of Advent. The cottage received a fresh coat of whitewash, the threshold was swept especially clean, and fresh curtains were hung in the windows. The house was scrubbed until it gleamed, including all the pots and pans, and all garments and table linens were laundered. The custom of the Irish window candle was so admired in Catholic Europe that it was widely copied there, and now finds a welcome in households that may not exactly expect a priest to wander in! —Rev. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of preparation for us, a time to prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas. (The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming.”) Although Advent refers to Christ’s birth at Christmas, it also refers to the coming of Christ through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Finally, it reminds us of the need to prepare for His Second Coming. Everything we do during this holy period should be aimed at preparing our minds and hearts for Christ’s arrival. Our readings today, from our First Reading in which the prophet Jeremiah predicts the coming of Christ (“The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise.”) to our Gospel from Luke (“And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.”) anticipates Christ’s arrival, both as an infant and in His return. As individuals and families and households we need to develop or continue Advent traditions. Whether it is setting time aside for special prayer or carefully filling a manger or lighting an Advent wreath or singing Christmas carols or reading Christmas poems and stories, we need to do some different things and do them consistently throughout Advent. This will help us have the both the right focus and the right attitude. Jer 33: 14‐16; Ps 25: 4‐5, 8‐10, 14; 1 Thes 3: 12‐ 4: 2; Lk 21: 25‐28, 34‐36 San Jaime / San León

Jer 33: 14‐16; Salmo 25: 4‐5, 8‐10, 14; 1 Tesalonicenses 3: 12‐ 4: 2;Lc 21, 25‐28, 34‐36 St. James - St. Leo

"As By a New Pentecost" Pope Saint John XXIII implored the whole church to pray in preparation for the Vatican Council, asking God to send us a new Pentecost. More recently Pope Benedict XVI called for the whole church to pray for a renewal of baptism and confirmation and be baptized in the Spirit. Pope Francis in 2014 said, "I hope that you will share with all in the Church the grace of the baptism in the Holy Spirit." The Adult Faith Formation Team at St. James is pleased to respond to this call by presenting the recently released DVD seminar "As By a New Pentecost." This 7‐week/14‐hour series illustrates in very practical terms how the graces of baptism and confirmation can be released to effectively address the challenges facing our families, church, and society today. They will inspire and challenge you to pray with new confidence. "Come Holy Spirit and renew the face of the earth! December 8, 2015—November 20, 2016
“IT WILL BE A HOLY YEAR OF MERCY.” ~ POPE FRANCIS Año Jubilar de la Misericordia Primer Domingo de Adviento Besides a new liturgical year, this Advent features an additional “beginning”—next week’s opening of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a graced opportunity to contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s unconditional love. Pope Francis says that mercy, as the bridge connecting God and the human family, opens our hearts to welcome God’s love for us sinners and our eyes to recognize others, especially society’s least loved and most vulnerable, as brothers and sisters entrusted to our care. Today’s scriptures provide a perfect Jubilee preparation. Jeremiah comforts us with the promise of God’s justice; Paul challenges us to abound in love for all; Luke bids us anticipate Jesus’ future coming as the joyful advent of our redemption. But in a unique way, this Jubilee Year’s Advent reminds us that Jesus, whose coming we await, is already present among us, in those for whom we need to become instruments of God’s mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistes.org/english.htm
