Children’s Shelter fortalece
lazos entre padres e hijos

Ser un buen padre no se trata
simplemente de disciplinar y
mantener económicamente a
sus hijos, si no también de estar
involucrado en todos los aspectos
de su desarrollo.
Este es el mensaje que José
Muñoz, el director de servicios
de paternidad de The Children’s
Shelter, le da a los padres inscritos en el programa “Compadre y
Compadre”.
Dicho programa de The Children’s Shelter existe para ampliar
y fortalecer el conocimiento y
las habilidades paternas de padres, padrastros, tíos, hermanos,
abuelos y cualquier persona que
asuma la responsabilidad de padre en la vida de un niño.
El programa gratuito de quince
semanas es ofrecido en español
y en inglés con el propósito de
ayudar a padres a alcanzar su
mejor potencial.
En la primera parte los padres
aprenden a cambiar pañales, a
darle de comer a bebés, aprenden a entretenerlos y como darle
masajes a los bebés.

It took four sessions of Congress, but the expansion of the
San Antonio Missions is finally
a reality.
With U.S. Representative
Lloyd Doggett (TX-35) in San
Antonio and surrounded by the
likes of Bexar County Judge
Nelson Wolff, the agreement
signed today leads to a host of
changes, not the least of which is
expansion of the current boundaries of the historic missions

if I talked about what was going
on with my child that my child’s
future was going to be limited.
Will their employer see this information? Can they join the military
if a mental health incident is on
their record? Those are the things
that parents are worried about
day in and day out,” Halterbrand
explained.
The worst sentiment she receives, though, is one she hears
all the time: I wish I would have
gotten help sooner.
“That friends, is stigma at play,”
Halterbrand said to a crowd of
mental health advocates.
One particular advocate knows
the struggle of receiving mental
health help all too well.
In November 2013, Virginia
State Senator Creigh Deeds was
slashed in the face and stabbed
multiple times by his mentally
ill son, Gus, who then ended his
own life.
Days prior to the incident, Deeds
tried to get his son help at a mental
health facility, but they were unable to find an open hospital bed
in the area.
“Someone experiencing cardiac
arrest is not turned away from an
emergency room because there is
no space, someone who commits
murder is not turned away from
the jail because the jail is full,”
Deeds said.
Since the incident, Deeds has
worked to improve Virginia’s
mental health system in various
ways, including extending the
amount of time allowed to find a
psychiatric bed and to require state
mental facilities to provide a bed
of last resort.

Statistics show that children’s
mental health is a major issue in the
community, but experts say the attention it receives it is not up to par.
According to Clarity Child
Guidance Center (CGC), approximately one in five children has a
mental illness, many however, go
undiagnosed.
In an effort to educate the community about the struggles of
mental health in children, CGC
hosted its third annual summit:
Claritycon2015.
Mental health professionals and
experts from around the world
gathered this week to create dialog
about the issue at hand.
“We must have conversations
not just at a conference like this,
but at work, at a picnic, across
the aisle, at a church, at the dinner
table, that’s where the conversations are really needed,” Rebecca
Helterbrand, senior vice president
of marketing and resource development for CGC said. “We have
to care for our children’s mental
health the same way we do for their
physical health.”
She added that many parents
don’t talk about their child’s mental
illness because they are afraid to
be judged.
“Will people think I’m a bad
parent? Or worse, will they blame Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds discussed the importance of improving the mental health

For anyone who ever met Joe Sandoval, it was evident
they were in the presence of a great newsman of old.
On June 18, the veteran of radio and print media passed
away from a reoccurring bout with cancer. Sandoval, 68,
was a former Managing Editor for La Prensa of San Antonio
Newspaper before moving on to contribute to numerous
media outlets and serving as an editor in that capacity.
Most recently, Sandoval returned to La Prensa to the Assignment Editor post before undergoing treatment for Leukemia. The La Prensa family has suffered a significant loss
and wishes his family and friends our deepest condolences.
Always the fiery newsman and rarely one to seek the
spotlight, Joe valued honesty over pomp and intrepidness
over convenience. La Prensa of San Antonio joins the
many across the city mourning the loss of a stalwart of
journalistic tradition.

Primero lo
obvio. Estamos
rodeados de
cosas y, por lo
tanto, tenemos
dos opciones

acumular cosas inútiles, o tirarlas. Yo siempre he preferido esta
segunda opción.
The New York Times reportó
en 2013 que hasta el 5 por ciento
de la población es “hoarder,”o
sea, sufre de una recién diagnosticada enfermedad clínica que los
lleva a acumular cosas sin poder
tirarlas. Yo debo sufrir exactamente de lo opuesto.
Cuando camino por mi casa
soy una especie de aspiradora andante. Todo lo que sobra, estorba
o no se ha usado en más de un
año se va derechito al basurero.
Los miércoles es el día de la felicidad; es cuando pasa el camión
de la basura y se lleva todas las
cosas grandes que no caben en
una bolsa plástica. A veces me
escondo detrás una pared o veo a
través de las ventanas el momento
–liberador– en que todas las cosas
que no quiero caen en la panza
del camión y son trituradas sin
misericordia.
Estados Unidos es un país que
vive fundamentalmente de su
consumo interno, es decir, de
las cosas que compran y venden
sus ciudadanos. Y eso significa
que casi toda la sociedad está estructurada en torno a la frenética
actividad del consumo. Consumir
implica, antes que nada, adquirir
y desechar. En promedio, cada estadounidense tira a la basura más
de cuatro libras por día (según la
agencia EPA). Pero, sin duda,
tendemos a guardar más cosas
que las que tiramos.
Tirar cosas es un arte. Primero
hay que identificar el objeto a
tirar, luego evaluar si sirve para
algo o tiene un significado emocional y, acto seguido, hacer el
esfuerzo de deshacerse de él.
Guardamos muchas cosas porque
es más fácil regresarlas al mismo
lugar que tirarlas.
Quisiera tirar más cosas, pero
no siempre me atrevo. En mi más
reciente mudanza me encontré
con un par de grabadoras de audio
cuyos casetes ya ni siquiera se
fabrican. Tengo montones de discos compactos con mis reportajes
en formatos que ya no existen. Y
recuerdos –tarjetas, fotos, regalos, reliquias, máscaras africanas,
pedazos del muro de Berlín y hasta unos títeres chiapanecos– que
hace tiempo dejaron de significar
algo. Eso es lo más difícil de tirar:
objetos que en un momento dado
tuvieron un valor afectivo y que el
tiempo ha convertido en simples
pedazos de papel o de madera.
¿En qué momento algo valioso
deja de serlo?
La escritora japonesa Marie
Kondo en su libro “La Magia
del Orden” propone limpiar tu
casa completa en un solo día,
desechar por categorías (no por
cuartos) y solo guardar lo que te
alegra. “¿Te genera gozo? Si lo
hace, guárdalo”, escribe, “Si no,
tíralo”. Su filosofía limpiadora es
simple: limpiar tu casa te limpiará
la mente y te liberará. Pero no
es fácil.
Hace cinco años que mi contadora me envía por correo
electrónico mi declaración de
impuestos y cada uno de esos
documentos está debidamente
guardado y copiado. Pero ante
el justificado temor que todo
habitante de Estados Unidos debe
tener al IRS, tengo cajas y cajas
de recibos, gastos y comprobantes desde 1983. ¿Qué hago con
esos malditos papeles? ¿Los tiro?
La velocidad con la que avanza
la tecnología ha acelerado el
ritmo con el que guardamos cosas
inútiles. De entrada, casi todo lo
que tiene un cable es obsoleto o
está a punto de serlo, desde computadoras y teléfonos para la casa
hasta televisores.
También hay basura cibernética. Todas las noches me voy
de la oficina luego de borrar
mis correos electrónicos. Borro
todos. Solo dejo los que hay que
contestar al día siguiente. Pero
tengo compañeros de trabajo que
viven inundados con miles de
correos que no se atreven a borrar
“por si alguna vez los necesito”.
(No menciono sus nombres para
evitar humillaciones públicas).
Tienen años acumulándolos y no
se atreven a apretar el salvador
botón de “delete”.
Mi peor pesadilla es la Pink
House. Así le llamábamos a la
casa de estudiantes donde vivía
a principios de los años 80, cerca
de la universidad de UCLA en
Los Angeles, cuyo dueño se pasó
décadas guardándolo todo, desde
periódicos hasta huesos de aguacate. Tenía, supongo, una enfermedad que le impedía deshacerse
de las cosas. Murió en medio de
montañas de basura pero, eso sí,
protegido por el mundo oscuro
y oloroso que pedazo a pedazo
erigió.
Lo opuesto fueron esos monjes
que vi recientemente en el aeropuerto de Varanasi en la India que
se subieron al avión sin zapatos.
Sus largas túnicas era su única
posesión. Y me atrevo a decir
que se veían felices y libres. Pero
dudo que el principio budista de
no desear más (para no sufrir)
difícilmente puede aplicarse a
nuestra sociedad occidental.

Ni muy muy ni tan tan. Pero

Just a Thought: It’s Father’s Day
have passed away.
In my case, my father passed
away at the age of 62 in 1985. My
grandfather (his father) passed
away at 65 in 1962. As a teenager I visited with my grandfather
maybe three or four times before
we moved for the umpteenth time.
Growing up in the fifties, I remember Father’s Day at my house
not being overly memorable as a
little kid. Later, as a teenager in
the 60s, I remember the family
would load up the car with my
five younger brothers, mother,
father and me and we would
trek to a local restaurant for that
special Sunday meal celebrating
fatherhood.
Since there were so many of us,
we usually were forced to wait
much longer than smaller families
for a table. Most of the time, they
had to pull two or more tables
together so we could all crowd in
around the tables for the Father’s
Day meal.
Once I graduated high school
in upper state New York, I left to
attend college in Fort Worth and
was not around for many celebrations after that.
Ironically when I worked as
a weekend reporter at KENS-5
Eyewitness News in 1982, my
very first assignment was to do
a Father’s Day story on George
Cisneros, the father of then Mayor Henry Cisneros, who I have
previously written a column
about for “Just a Thought.”
It was exciting visiting him at
his home and interviewing him
about his family’s Father’s Day
traditions since I had previously
served in the Army Reserves with
him in the 70s long before I met
the Mayor.
He was my unit commandant
at the 90th ARCOM on Harry
Wurzbach Road. Every Monday
night for our reserve meeting, I
would report in at the ARCOM
and either pass him in the hallway or report directly to Colonel
Cisneros’s office for assignments
for the evening. I do recall standing in front of him in his office
smartly saluting him until he
returned my salute.
By the time I interviewed him
for the story, he had retired from
the Reserves and I would run
into him at the local gym where
we both worked out. In some
ways he reminded me of my own
father.
During our workouts we would
visit and talk family. Like my
father, Colonel Cisneros was
a strict disciplinarian, but a
fair man and great commander.
Around that time he suffered a
stroke and got around with some
assistance. When we worked out
I would spot him when he attempted to lift some light weights.
He eventually passed away
some years later and I attended
his funeral that attracted hundreds
of family, friends and mourners.
In conversations with Henry and
his family at that time, he shared
that his dad was a great father.
I was privileged to have served
with that great father, spent time
with him militarily and in the
gym. Eventually I reunited with
my own father for his last two
Father’s Days celebrations here
in San Antonio, before he too
passed away.
Today is the day to spend with
your father, be it at his home or
yours or perhaps at a local restaurant. Either way, have a Happy
Father’s Day.

President Lincoln signed the
Emancipation
Proclamation
freeing slaves
Lloyd Doggett in parts of the
United States,
Union General Gordon Granger
arrived in Galveston on June 19,
1865 to announce the order. For
most of the time since then, Juneteenth has been celebrated with
festivities across Texas and the
nation. Juneteenth, like our local
march honoring the birth of Cesar
Chavez, is a time for all Americans to celebrate our freedom. In
San Antonio we recently joined
together to celebrate the contributions of one of our own—Jaime
Martinez—in a street dedicated
to honor his local fight for these
freedoms.
But even as we celebrate Juneteenth’s sesquicentennial, much
work remains. For example, right
now the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is deciding whether all who
want to vote will be able to do so
without the barriers erected by the
Texas Voter ID law. I strongly
believe that democracy thrives
when all citizens can voice their
concerns. Voter ID laws unconstitutionally create hurdles for
too many Americans. We should
be making voting easier, not
harder. Texas was found guilty
of intentional discrimination by a
federal court in a decision written
by Corpus Christi Judge Nelva
Gonzalez Ramos. She noted that
the unduly restrictive law put an
unfair burden on minority voters
and that this discrimination was
impermissible. Judge Ramos assisted me when I served as a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court.
Three years after the first Juneteenth, Congress passed the
Fourteenth Amendment, which
gave all people equal protection
under the law, and the Fifteenth
Amendment, which guaranteed the right to vote. Yet these
noble sentiments remained mere
words on a piece of paper for
almost a century. It took brave
Civil Rights leaders like Cesar
Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to
transform words into deeds. This
heroic struggle gave birth to such
protections as the Voting Rights
Act. But the Supreme Court, in
a 5-4 decision, struck down an
important provision of the Voting
Rights Act, making it harder to
challenge efforts to restrict voting
and challenge redistricting. I am
a sponsor of legislation to correct
this awful decision. Congress
needs to restore that promise of
the Voting Rights Act and reaffirm our commitment to equal
voting access.
I have seen the incredible engagement of our neighborhoods
in San Antonio. A key part of my
job is listening and remaining accessible to you. Let me hear from

Esta semana me propuse escribir una columna seria, analítica
y social sobre la identidad afro­
americana y los problemas que
causó Rachel Dolezal en la comunidad afroamericana.
Sin embargo, como un cuento
entremezclado de espanto, risas
y lágrimas, volvió a aparecer
la figura de Donald Trump y
empezó a dominar la política
norteamericana con su anuncio
presidencial. Mis planes se
fueron a la borda.
No es que una información
sobre Trump no sea importante,
especialmente si tomamos en
cuenta que se esta semana que
postuló oficialmente a la prime­
ra magistratura del país. Por
supuesto que es importante y hay
que darle el espacio necesario en
el análisis político.
Empero, un candidato que hace
relucir su ego ilimitado, que hace
brillar estereotipos, que hace res­
plandecer el sexismo, que hace
enaltecer el capitalismo salvaje y
que hace sobresaltar la hipocresía, no hace más que convertir un
circo a toda su campaña política.
Muy a su manera, como si
estuviera promoviendo un programa virtual de televisión, su
hija Ivanka lo presentó como el
nuevo candidato a la presidencia
de la República. Trump hizo
una entrada extravagante en su
propio edificio. Bajó la escalera
eléctrica y caminó a paso fijo
hasta el estrado donde lo esperaba su hija.
Desde allí, detrás del pódium,
empezó su diatriba.
Inicialmente sugirió que Estados Unidos no es el mismo; todos
le ganan, incluyendo México.
Este país latinoamericano,
según Trump, no está enviando
su mejor gente. Por el contrario,

benefit YOSA’s scholarship fund, enabling YOSA to change

NOCHE DEL RIO – It is the oldest outdoor dance performance
of its kind in the United States. Spanish for “Party Night on the

paid local professionals at the Arneson Outdoor River Theatre.

Joven acusado de los asesinatos en SC confesó su crimen

Charleston (EE.UU.) que causó
nueve muertos fue acusado el
viernes de asesinato, lo que puede
acarrearle la pena de muerte, tras
confesar la autoría del crimen,
que aparentemente cometió para
iniciar una “guerra racial”.
La Policía de Charleston (Carolina del Sur) anunció que Dylann
Roof, de 21 años, está acusado de
nueve cargos de asesinato y otro
de posesión de arma de fuego para
cometer un crimen violento.
Detenido horas después del
tiroteo en el vecino estado de
Carolina del Norte, el joven ha
confesado que fue él quien disparó el miércoles por la noche
contra un grupo de personas que
participaban en una lectura de textos sagrados en la Iglesia Africana
Metodista Episcopal (AME) de
Charleston.
En la audiencia de lectura de
cargos a través de una videoconferencia, el juez fijó para el 23
de octubre la próxima vista y el
acusado respondió a las preguntas sobre su edad, dirección y
situación laboral, sin hacer más

El juez estableció una fianza

that the treatment was significant,”

cuenta que se necesitan dos personas para criar un hijo”, insistió.
Además, subrayó la importancia de que la madre y el padre
pongan 50 por ciento del esfuerzo
en criar a su hijo para así romper
el estereotipo de que el padre
simplemente es el disciplinario.
El programa también le enseña
a los padres a poner límites y a
manejar su estrés.
Después de las 15 semanas del
curso los padres se gradúan con
una ceremonia formal y, de acuer­
do a Muñoz, los padres mejoran
su actitud con sus hijos.
“Durante las primeras sesiones
unos padres están distraídos en
sus celulares, pero después de
unas semanas empiezan a darse
cuenta que están aquí por sus hijos y empiezan a transformarse”,
comentó el director de servicios
de paternidad de The Children´s
Shelter.
El director añadió que le ha tocado trabajar con padres enviados
de Child Protective Services o
de las cortes que –al principio–
se oponían al programa, pero
después de varias semanas em­
piezan a reconectarse con sus hijos y durante la graduación están
en lágrimas de lo agradecidos que
están con el programa.
Las graduaciones ocurren cada
otro mes, de hecho, 61 padres se
graduarán el martes 23 de junio.
Después de la graduación, los
padres tienen la oportunidad de
convertirse en un mentor para
el programa “Compadre y Compadre”. El programa anima a los
padres a ayudar a sus hijos a leer y
a escribir para desempeñar un papel activo en la vida de sus hijos.
“¿Conocen a los maestros
de sus hijos? ¿A sus amigos?
¿Saben cuáles son sus materias
favoritas? Están son preguntas
que le hacemos a los padres”,
explicó Muñoz. “Queremos que
los padres sean miembros activos
en las escuelas de sus hijos”.
Como mentores, los padres
tienen la oportunidad de compartir lo que aprendieron y servir como un ejemplo para otros
padres.
El próximo curso iniciará el
miércoles 24 de junio. Los participantes se reúnen una vez a la
semana por dos horas. Las clases
se ofrecen los martes y miércoles
de las 10 a.m. a las 12 p.m. y de
las 5:30 p.m. a las 7:30 p.m.

Trump en México

Estamos a unos días de que
fina­lice la mitad del 2015, por
lo que debemos de preguntarnos sobre si hemos cumplido
con nuestros propósitos de Año
Nuevo en términos de salud y
buen estilo de vida.
En lo que a mí respecta, les
diré abiertamente que he cumplido a “medias” los que fueron
mis deseos para comenzar con
el pie derecho el 2015.
Sobre mi evaluación personal
de salud general, les comentaré
que el Creador Divino me ha
dado la suficiente energía para
cumplir con mis obligaciones
cotidianas y para seguir en mi
lucha diaria para evitar recaída
ante el alcohol.
Por la gracia del Todopoderoso me he mantenido sobrio
por 15 años. No falta un día en
que los disque llamados amigos
(as) me ofrezcan una copa o me
inviten a una “parranda”.
Mi respuesta seguirá siendo
un simple agradecimiento y un
rotundo NO.
Con decir NO, nada me pasa,
sigo siendo el mismo, ni se me
cae el pelo, ni me afecta en lo
más mínimo en mi sistema físico
y mental, sino todo lo contrario,
me deja un placer enorme el rehusarme al consumo de bebidas
de contenido alcohólico.
En mi propósito de pelearle
a la báscula, creo que con 190
libras, que actualmente peso,
le estoy ganando al sobrepeso.
Al comienzo del 2015 estaba
en las 200 libras, por lo que en
cada visita a mi doctor se me
requería bajar unas cuantas, por
tener “alto colesterol”, las cuales
tenía que rebajar mediante una
dieta balanceada y rigurosos
ejercicios.
Por prescripción médica estuve tomando medicamento para
reducir o mantener controlado el
alto colesterol, el cual logré pero
a un costo bastante alto, ya que
dicho medicamento comenzaba
a dañarme tendones y músculos.
Esa reacción me forzó a dejar de
tomar medicamento para el alto
colesterol, la cual reemplacé con
un menú alto en proteína y bajo
en calorías y grasa, consumiendo
bastante líquidos acompañados
de jugo de limón, el cual me
ha mantenido en buen nivel de
colesterol y he recuperado la
movilidad física en un cien por
ciento.
No por ello les puedo recomendar que si están en un plan
médico para la reducción o control de alto colesterol lo dejen
y hagan lo mismo que yo. Si
comienzan a sentir los síntomas
que aquí describo, por favor consulten con su doctor y háganle
saber que no quieren comenzar a
sentir los efectos secundarios del
medicamento que están tomando
por alto colesterol. Si él les recomienda dejarlo y hacer otro plan
de salud, háganlo nunca es tarde
para tomar segundas opiniones.
Recientemente por televisión
me informé en un programa especial de salud y economía que
el gobierno federal está a punto
de darle permiso a un laboratorio
para que comience a distribuir lo
que sería una dosis de largo plazo
para controlar el alto colesterol.
El medicamento al parecer
tiene duración de “por vida”,
con un costo que sobrepasa los
siete mil dólares, cantidad que se
debe pagar el mismo día que el
paciente recibe la dosis mediante
una inyección.
De por si el medicamento oral
(pastilla o capsula) es caro. Yo
no creo que podría costearme
una de esas inyecciones, se me
iría la mitad de mi sueldo, y luego ¿con qué le saldría a la dueña
de mis quincenas?
Bueno, ya comenté lo positivo de mi evaluación de salud
de mitad del 2015. Ahora sigue
lo negativo o cosas que no he
llevado a efecto, ya sea por falta
de tiempo, como el periodo que
dediqué en la cobertura de los
Spurs, que en la temporada hicieron buena defensa de su título,
pero luego fallaron en ganar su
sexto campeo­nato tras ser eliminados en la primera ronda del
playoff del oeste por los angelinos del club Clippers, serie que
se fue hasta el séptimo partido
para beneplácito de la base de
seguidores de ambas franquicias.
Los deseos que no he logrado
concretar en los primeros seis
meses son no haber logrado
volver a ponerme el uniforme
para jugar béisbol a nivel veterano.
Sigo teniendo ofertas de equipos que les gustaría tenerme en
su alineación, por igual en el
deporte de la pelota blanda, el
softball categoría “Slowpitch”.
No lo he podido jugar, pero
tampoco he dejado de cubrirlo
trayéndole a nuestros lectores de
la sección deportiva resultados,
entrevistas y programación de
ligas independientes que operan
en San Antonio difundiendo el
béisbol sabatino y dominical, así
como en el deporte del balompié
independiente regional.
Otro de mis propósitos aun no
cumplido es que no he tomado
vacaciones correspondientes al
2015. Sigo pensando que sería
mejor tomarlas el próximo año;
sin embargo, mi familia me
recla­m a que las tome, ya que
tiene planes para que vayamos
a visitar familiares que residen
en el área de Los Ángeles y
el Condado de Orange (California), sede de la maravillosa
Disneyland, donde a un par de
cuadras de distancia en el Humana Hospital el 25 de mayo de
1990 nació mi heredero Vidal
Rodrigo Franco De La Garza, y
él quiere celebrar sus 25 abriles
en el “Reino de Disney”.
Todavía restan seis meses del
2015, por lo que no descarto
tomarme las dos semanas de mi
periodo vacacional que por ley
laboral me corresponden en esta
empresa periodística que por 24
años me ha dado oportunidades,
que nunca hubiera encontrado en
otro empleo.
Por cierto que La Prensa de
San Antonio siempre ha tenido
sus puertas abiertas a periodistas
que comienzan sus respectivas
carreras y para los que ya tienen
experiencia como redactores, así
como para agentes de ventas con
o sin experiencia.
Por otra parte, este Día del
Padre, de todo corazón les deseo
a los padres que lo pasen felices
con sus familiares.
Si toman no manejen, háganlo
por el amor a sus seres queridos,
y por el bienestar propio.
Salud pero de la buena, alimentándose correctamente y
haciendo ejercicio de su especialidad.
Dios nos da la oportunidad de
vivir un día a la vez. Nosotros
somos quienes decidimos que
pasos tomar.
Si amas a tu familia haz el
esfuerzo de concretar tus deseos de Año Nuevo. Aún queda
tiempo para evaluar nuestro
plan de salud, hay que hacer el

la piñata de Donald Trump.
Y como ya va siendo tradición
de este taller de artesanía popular,
la piñata es su forma de expresar
(protestar) por las polémicas
declaraciones despectivas del
magnate inmobiliario Donald
Trump en contra de los inmigrantes mexicanos.
“México manda a su gente,
pero no manda lo mejor. Está
enviando a gente con un montón
de problemas (...). Están trayendo
drogas, el crimen, a los violadores. Asumo que hay algunos
que son buenos”, afirmó Trump
durante la rueda de prensa que
montó en la torre de su mismo
nombre, ubicada en el centro de
Manhattan, en la que anunció su
intención de buscar la candidatura
presidencial republicana en 2016.
Trump dijo, además, que propondría levantar un “gran muro”
en la frontera entre los dos países
y hacer que “México lo pague”.
Las reacciones no se hicieron

“10 ways to love your brain”
The evidence is mounting:
People in San Antonio can reduce
their risk of cognitive decline by
making key lifestyle changes.
That is the conclusion of a new research summary published online
in the June issue of Alzheimer’s
& Dementia: The Journal of the
Alzheimer’s Association.
“Practicing good judgment
during childhood and adulthood
by wearing protective gear and
being aware of your surroundings
can help prevent brain injury,”
says Dr. Kate Glywasky of Clinical Trials of Texas. “As we get
older, good physical health and
continued education are protective factors that can delay aging
of the brain.”
In recognition of Alzheimer’s
& Brain Awareness Month in
June, the Alzheimer’s Association offers 10 Ways to Love Your
Brain, tips that may reduce the
risk of cognitive decline.
1. Break a sweat. Engage in
regular cardiovascular exercise
that elevates your heart rate and
increases blood flow to the brain
and body. Several studies have
found an association between
physical activity and reduced risk
of cognitive decline.
2. Hit the books. Formal education in any stage of life will help
reduce your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. For example,
take a class at a local college,
community center or online.
3. Butt out. Evidence shows
that smoking increases risk of
cognitive decline. Quitting smoking can reduce that risk to levels
comparable to those who have
not smoked.
4. Follow your heart. Evidence shows that risk factors for
cardiovascular disease and stroke
– obesity, high blood pressure
and diabetes – negatively impact
your cognitive health. Take care
of your heart, and your brain just
might follow.
5. Heads up! Brain injury can
raise your risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Wear a seat
belt, use a helmet when playing
contact sports or riding a bike, and
take steps to prevent falls.
6. Fuel up right. Eat a healthy
and balanced diet that is lower
in fat and higher in vegetables
and fruit to help reduce the risk
of cognitive decline. Although
research on diet and cognitive
function is limited, certain diets,
including Mediterranean and
Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary
Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to risk
reduction.
7. Catch some zzz’s. Not getting enough sleep due to conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea
may result in problems with
memory and thinking.
8. Take care of your mental
health. Some studies link a history of depression with increased
risk of cognitive decline, so seek
medical treatment if you have
symptoms of depression, anxiety
or other mental health concerns.
Also, try to manage stress.
9. Buddy up. Staying socially
engaged may support brain health.
Pursue social activities that are
meaningful to you. Find ways to
be part of your local community
– if you love animals, consider
volunteering at a local shelter.
If you enjoy singing, join a local
choir or help at an afterschool
program. Or, just share activities
with friends and family.
10. Stump yourself. Challenge
and activate your mind. Build a
piece of furniture. Complete a
jigsaw puzzle. Do something artistic. Play games, such as bridge,
that make you think strategically.
Challenging your mind may have
short and long-term benefits for
your brain.
“Our journey for a healthy
lifestyle begins with a single
step. Make that step to attend a
yoga class three times a week.
Eat a Mediterranean diet, rich in
produce, olive oil and fish. Go
outside, walk your block, enjoy
your neighbors and take that first
step to building your healthy
lifestyle,” said Amber Anthony,
owner of Papouli’s Greek Grill.
In addition to reducing your
risk of cognitive decline, these
tips may also reduce your risk of
dementia. Evidence for reducing risk of dementia is currently
strongest in relation to formal
education and the avoidance of
head injury; other tips show indication of possibly reducing risk.
Alzheimer’s disease, the most
common form of dementia, is
one of the nation’s largest public
health crises. Alzheimer’s is an
irreversible neurological disease
that impairs cognition, orientation
and functional capacity, and it is
the only cause of death among the
top ten life-threatening conditions
in the United States that cannot be
prevented, cured or even slowed.
Cognitive decline is the deterioration in memory or cognition.
Although some cognitive decline
is expected with age, it is not yet
known how this may directly
relate to dementia.
Given the growing evidence
that people can help reduce their
risk of cognitive decline, the Alzheimer’s Association is launching a new brain health education
program, Healthy Habits for a
Healthier You, available through
our San Antonio & South Texas
chapters.
In addition to recommending
these healthy habits, the Alzheimer’s Association is asking
the community to come together
and help fight Alzheimer’s disease during Alzheimer’s & Brain
Awareness Month by doing the
following:

Experimental vaccine generates HIV antibodies in rats

have developed an experimental
vaccine to generate antibodies
in rats, which can neutralize
the Human Immunodeficiency
Virus, HIV, that causes AIDS.
The conclusions of the research, developed by scientists at the U.S. Institutes of
Rockefeller University and
The Scripps Research Institute,
TSRI, as well as International
AIDS Vaccine Initiative, were
published on Thursday as three
studies in the journals ‘Cell’ and
‘Science.’
The research could pave the
way for developing an effective
vaccine against AIDS, say the
authors.
The nature of HIV to mutate
as soon as it enters a body has
baffled HIV vaccine researchers
for long.
Historically, efforts have
focused on creating a vaccine
that allows the development
of antibodies to protect against
different versions of the virus.
But these efforts have always
failed in the preclinical and
clinical trial stages.
In recent years, scientists
found a small fraction of people,
living with HIV broadly develop neutralizing antibodies,
which are very powerful against
different variants of the virus.
Rats are immune to HIV or
any such equivalent infection,
so researchers underlined the
need for further research to
prove if the new approach will
be as effective on human beings.
“The results are pretty spectacular,” said one of the researchers, Dennis Burton,
Chairman of the Department of
Immunology and Microbial Science of the TSRI and co-leader

Diabetes and obesity

The rate of diabetes in San Antonio is among the highest in the
country, as more than 14 percent
of our citizens carry this diagnosis.
This correlates closely with the very
high rate of obesity in our city. As
a community, we must find ways to
decrease the prevalence of this disease and to ensure that the disease
is managed effectively.
Adult-onset, or type 2 diabetes,
occurs because the body is not able
to use insulin normally. Insulin is
produced by the pancreas and allows the cells in our body to take
up and utilize glucose from our
bloodstream. If our body is resistant to insulin, the glucose level in
our bloodstream, or “blood sugar”,
rises, and we are at risk for developing many diabetes complications.
Poorly controlled diabetes can lead
to the development of plaques, or
atherosclerosis, in the lining of our
blood vessels, and, over time, these
plaques can lead to arterial blockages. This process can occur in the
heart, brain, kidneys, and limbs,
resulting in heart attack, stroke,
kidney failure, and amputation.
While there is no cure for diabetes, we do have some control over
the risks of developing it, and we
can treat the disease to prevent its
complications. As a medical community, our efforts are certainly
focused on achieving this control.
The development of diabetes is
not well understood, in that there
is both a genetic component and
an environmental one. While a
patient’s family history is important in determining one’s risk and
cannot be changed, we can work
hard to change the environmental
influences, including weight, diet,
and level of activity.
Which brings us to the issue of
obesity. In addition to diabetes,
obesity is associated with many
diseases, including hypertension,
high cholesterol, obstructive sleep
apnea, and acid reflux. The control
of obesity leads to improvement
and, in most cases, resolution of
these diseases. Unfortunately, the
control of obesity remains extremely challenging.
The severity of obesity is determined by one’s body mass
index, or BMI, which takes into
account weight and height. Above
a BMI of 35 with obesity-related
diseases like diabetes, or above a
BMI of 40 without these diseases,
a patient falls into the category of
“morbidly obese.” This means that
their obesity level puts them at high
risk for developing things like heart
disease, stroke, and even some
types of cancer. Life expectancy is
decreased in these patients.
Medical therapy and attempts
at nonsurgical weight loss are the
logical first steps in fighting this
disease. But, in the morbidly obese
category, many patients experience
insufficient weight loss or bounce
back to their original weight after
a brief period of success. In these
cases, the health risk of remaining
morbidly obese will exceed the risk
of weight loss surgery, and surgery
should be seriously considered.
The risk of surgery has decreased
significantly over the past several
decades, with new technologies
and techniques leading to lower
morbidity and improved outcomes.

LeBron James walked up to
Stephen Curry and reached out
his hand and congratulated him.
A classy moment shared by

Seconds later the Warriors
would celebrate their game 6
victory, 105- 97, by hoisting
the Larry O’Brien trophy on the
Cavaliers floor on Tuesday.
LeBron has fallen short in the
NBA Finals four times in his
career leading to a 2-4 finals
record.
Although he put up historicnumbers in the series, the Warriors depth was too much for
him and the crippled Cavaliers.
“We ran out of talent tonight.
The guys played as hard as they
could, as long as we could,”
James said.
LeBron led both teams in
points, rebounds and assists,
averaging 35.8 points
8.8 assists and 13.3 rebounds
in this series. He also averaged
45.7 minutes per game, five
minutes more than the next highest player.
“If I could have gave more,
I would have done it. I gave
everything I had,” James said.
He was not the only one who
made history throughout the
finals. The Warriors 83 combined regular and post-season
victories this season made them
the third winningest team in
NBA history.
Only two teams had more,
the 1996 Chicago Bulls with
87 wins, and 1997 Bulls with
84 wins. Steve Kerr was apart
of both Bulls teams as a player.
Kerr is the first rookie head
coach to capture an NBA title
since Pat Riley in 1982.
“We were fortunate in a lot of
ways this year, maybe number
one health,” Kerr said.
Andre Iguodala did not start
a single game this season until
game 4 of the NBA Finals. This
decision would alter the series
and help lift the Warriors past
the Cavaliers.
“He was great the entire series. But he saved this season
for us,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said.
“He stepped up when we
needed him... he deserves that
trophy,” Warriors guard Klay
Thompson said.
Iguodala scored a season high
25 points for the Warriors in
game 6 and averaged 16.3 points,
5.8 rebounds and four assists the
entire series. Although his numbers don’t scream “Finals MVP,”
his consistency and presence
earned him the title.

“I’ve been preparing for this
moment for 11 years now,”
Iguodala said.
This Warriors team is the first
team since the 1991 Bulls to win
a title without any Finals experience on their NBA playoff roster.
The only other person would
be Coach Steve Kerr, who hasn’t
been to the finals since he was
a player with the Spurs in their
2003 championship run.
“It had been 12 years since I
had been there since my last year
with the Spurs. I almost forgot
just how grueling the stretch is,
emotional stress and physical
stress.” Kerr said.
Curry was able share the finals
moment with his father.
“This is special,” Curry said.
“This is for my whole family, he
[Dell Curry] played 16 years in
this league, and never ever been
able to enjoy this but he can live
through myself and the whole
team because he is just as apart
of this as we are.”
The Cavaliers injuries eventually spelled their demise.
“I feel bad for Kevin and
Kyrie because they did so much
during the course of the sea-
son, having them in the series
would’ve been significant,”
Blatt said.
It was tough pill to swallow
for Blatt, nonetheless, he was
optimistic about the season as
well as next season.

la importancia de prepararse
físicamente para el comienzo de
cada partido, con calentamiento
del físico y disciplina deportiva.
Durante la sesión abierta para
los medios informativos, el
francés sorprendió a los pequeños encestando un disparo desde
la media cancha, recibiendo a
cambión aplausos y saludos de
High Five.
Parker dedicó también tiempo
a niñas y niños enseñándoles las
técnicas para bloquear al rival,
realizar disparos al aro dentro y
fuera del perímetro.
Incluso, hizo pareja con algunos de ellos que fueron elegidos
para que mostraran sus habilidades ante la audiencia.
“Para nosotros los padres de
familia es bonito ver a Parker
interactuar con los niños y
enseñarles lo que él sabe de
basquetbol. Estoy orgullosa de
haber podido traer al campo de
aprendizaje a mi hijo que es fan
de Parker”, expresó emocionada
una mamá.
En su mensaje dirigido a los
pequeños basquetbolistas, el
estelar francés destacó la importancia de seguir haciendo cualquier tipo de deportes, cumplir
con sus tareas en el hogar y la
escuela.
“A todos los felicito por estar presentes en este campo
de entrenamiento. Deseo que
aprovechen este momento y
que aprendan cada día más en
el juego del basquetbol. Hagan
todo lo que sus padres les indiquen y que tengan éxito hoy
y siempre”, concluyó.

Cristina Lopez and Mariana Rong Famosos analistas en cobertura
Named Academic All-Americans Juegos Panamericanos por ESPN

Two familiar names in St. Mary’s
Women’s tennis have added another
prestigious honor to their mantels,
and they have made school history in the process. All-Americans
Mariana Rong and Cristina Lopez
have been named Academic AllAmericans, as the dynamic duo
has been named to the Capital One
Academic All-America Division II
At-Large Team, which was selected
by CoSIDA.
Rong, a senior from Jinan, China,
was named to the Academic AllAmerican First Team after maintaining a 3.94 grade point average as a
biology/chemistry major. Lopez,
a junior from San Antonio, made
Third Team after keeping a 3.86
GPA while studying accounting.
The selections give St. Mary’s
three CoSIDA Academic All-Amer-
icans this school year, as Rong and
Lopez join softball’s Haley Richter
in achieving the honor. It marks
the most CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans St. Mary’s has ever had
in a school year, dating back to the
school’s first-winner, Catherine
Ashour, in 1982-83.
Rong also becomes the first twotime All-American and two-time
CoSIDA Academic All-American
in any sport in St. Mary’s history.
Rong was a Third-Team CoSIDA
Academic All-American last year,
and was an Intercollegiate Tennis
Association All-American in singles
in 2013 before being named an AllAmerican in doubles this season.
On the court, Rong was 24-3
in overall singles play and Lopez
was 23-3, helping lead St. Mary’s
to its first-ever NCAA Division II
national championships quarterfinals appearance. Rong finished the
season ranked No.32 by the ITA
while Lopez ranked 34th.
In doubles, the Rong/Lopez tandem finished the season ranked
10th nationally after placing seventh
at the ITA small college national
championships in the fall and helping lead St. Mary’s to its first-ever
NCAA national championship quarterfinals appearance in the spring.
The two combined to post 26-3
overall record, including 18-3 in
dual play and 8-0 in tournament
competition. They were unbeaten
in regular-season Heartland Conference play, going 5-0.
As a team, St. Mary’s finished
the season ranked 12th in the ITA’s
final national ranking. The Capital
One Academic All-America Division II Women’s At-Large program
includes the sports of bowling,
crew, fencing, field hockey, golf,
gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse,
rifle, skiing, swimming and diving,
tennis and water polo.
AT&T Center gets $100 million facelift

When the Bexar County-owned
AT&T Center required renovations,
the final bill was no doubt going to
raise eyebrows.
The $100 million tab approved
by the County will go to providing
new seating throughout the arena,
renovating the numerous boxes for
fans and VIPs and providing a new
look to the interior of the facility.
“It’s been a long process with the
voters approving the funding for this
project in 2008. Recently, we’ve
been working with the County and
the rodeo and the Coliseum Advisory Board to identify how we can
enhance the fan experience,” said

Para el renombrado piloto Kurt
Busch el haber arrancado desde
el puesto 24 y en un auto de
repuesto (suplente), no fue problema alguno para adjudicarse
la victoria de la carrera Quicken
Loans 400 que se corrió bajo la
lluvia en el autódromo Michigan
International Speedway.
La carrera fue recortada a 138
de las supuestas 200 vueltas que
originalmente son las programadas para tan importante competencia automovilística.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. finalizó en
el segundo lugar luego de que la
NASCAR colocara la bandera
roja por cuarta ocasión en la
jornada, seguido por Martin
Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth y los
compañeros de Team Penske,
Joey Logano y Brad Keselowski
para completar el Top 5.
Esta fue la segunda victoria
de la temporada para Busch, su
tercera en Michigan y la número
27 de su brillante y espectacular
carrera como uno de los mejores
pilotos que forman parte de la
élite en el circuito NASCAR.
“Es increíble sentir esto luego
de lo que pasamos”, dijo Busch
en Victory Lane (Callejón de
la Victoria). “Mantuvimos el
ritmo y encontramos la punta
al final justo cuando llegó la
lluvia. ¿Saben lo que es más
especial de todo esto? Ganar en
casa de Chevrolet. Eso es lo más
importante, ganar en Michigan…

Busch agradeció a su equipo
por el trabajo extra con el que
pusieron a punto y bien afinado
el auto reserva, tras haber perdido al estelar en sorpresivo
accidente contra el muro exterior
del autódromo donde estuvieron
realizando las debidas sesiones
de prácticas.
“Te tienes que ensuciar las
manos y hacer el trabajo. El jefe
de equipo Tony Gibson hizo
que todos trabajaran un poco de
tiempo extra. Gracias a todos
tenemos una gran química en el
equipo”, apunto Busch.
La carrera
Busch tomó la delantera por primera vez en la vuelta 133, cuando
Kyle Larson, que se había arriesgado a seguir en la pista en
lugar de entrar a pits (taller)
para cargar gasolina, se quedó
sin combustible, por lo que el
piloto del Chevrolet No. 42 de
Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet
vio frustradas sus posibilidades
de victoria.
Busch había estado detrás de
Larson en el reinicio de la vuelta
130, pero este último no había
parado a pits desde la vuelta 88
y su jefe de equipo, Chris Heroy,
esperaba que la lluvia llegara antes. Sin embargo, se quedó a tres
vueltas de concretar la estrategia
y le entregó la victoria a Busch.
La tormenta que empezó en
la vuelta 136 obligó a oficiales
de la NASCAR a suspender la
carrera.
Busch ya había recibido otro
favor de su compañero de equipo, Kevin Hrvick, quien tuvo
uno de los mejores autos de la
jornada, cuando en la vuelta 63
se vio forzado entrar a pits debido a una llanta pinchada, por lo
que perdió dos vueltas y terminó
oficialmente en el puesto 29.
Earnhardt Jr. estaba al lado de
Larson para el último reinicio,
pero fue Busch quien impulsó
a Larson.
“En los reinicios no salimos
tan bien como el No.41”, reconoció Earnhardt Jr. “Nos pasó lo
mismo en el Charlotte Speedway, cuando el No. 78 (Truex
Jr.) y el 41 salieron muy bien”,
dijo Earnhardt Jr.
El más desafortunado de la
jornada fue el estelar piloto Kyle
Busch, quien había ganado la
carrera de la XFINITY Series
el sábado, pero se estrelló en la
vuelta 52 y terminó en el puesto
43, lo que vio disminuidas sus
posibilidades de avanzar para
el Chase.
Kurt Busch, Chevrolet, 138, se
hizo acreedor al premio monetario por la cantidad de $186, 125.
El promedio de velocidad del
ganador fue de 116, 688 MPH.

el desarrollo del béisbol sabatino
(categoría veteranos) y dominical
(categoría abierta), por lo que se
espera ver en el futuro algo diferente en la promoción y la práctica
del rey de los deportes.

Guerrero, ahora que ha tomado
la decisión de reanudar acciones
en la Colt 45 Baseball League, se
ha echado a cuestas el compromiso de formar dos equipos que
llevarán el nombre de Colt 45,
tanto en la liga de veteranos como
en la dominical abierta.
Actualmente Colt 45 Baseball
League cuenta con cuatro equipos
registrados para la temporada de
veteranos, por igual 4 clubes con
registro en la liga dominical. “Se
han jugado partidos de exhibición,
por mientras se llega a obtener el
registro de ocho equipos por liga
(sabatina y dominical). En dado
caso de que no se logre reunir los
equipos necesarios, arrancaremos
con cuatro los sábados y cuatro
los domingos”, dijo Guerrero.

veteranos y abierta continúan
abiertos, por lo que el presidente
Guerrero sigue convocando a
clubes ya formados y equipos

For the third year, the Folklife
Mass was held at the St. Paul
Community Center House of
Mercy, featuring local ethnic choir
participation with native dress
complemented with a procession
celebrating the feast of Corpus
Christi.
Celebrant of the Mass was Bishop Emeritus Charles Grahmann
of the Diocese of Dallas. Concelebrants included Bishop Emeritus
John Yanta of the Diocese of Amarillo, and Msgr. Charles Chaffman, pastor of St. Paul’s Church,
assisted by Deacon Rafael Lara.
The liturgy began with a procession of flags representing the
Catholic ethnic groups of Texas.

ethnic group flags of Texas. The
eloquence of the procession was
enhanced by the flag bearers wearing their traditional costumes of the
countries they represented.
Lectors were: Al Notzon, Larry
Keller, and Aracelia Garcia. Readers of the prayers of the faithful
were: Venice Grantham, James
Benavides, Greg McKinney, Dorothy Pawelek, Steve Persyn and
Mary Wisniewski, all wearing their
traditional costumes with some
prayers read in native languages.
Music was provided by the St.
Paul’s Spanish Choir, the San
Antonio Congolese Choir, the St.
Jerome’s Parish Saturday Mass
Choir, musicians, and Scottish bagpipes. A clarinet solo of the “Ave
Maria” for the meditation hymn
was performed by Ronnie Ibrom.
At the conclusion of Mass, everyone in the congregation participated in the traditional procession
that takes place on the feast of Corpus Christi, along with the children
who had made their First Holy
Communion. Msgr. Chaffman
carried the monstrance as everyone
followed. In the community center
there were four decorated altars
positioned for this special day to
honor the Blessed Sacrament.
Bishop Yanta expressed his appreciation to everyone for attending the Mass, and he acknowledged
the committee members for all of
the time and effort they provided in
preparing for the special occasion,
citing Msgr. Chaffman, Steve and
Elaine Persyn-Chairpersons, Larry
and Gloria Keller, Richard Reyna,
Mary Davila, Greg McKinney,
Notzon, and JoAnn Andera of the
Texas Folklife Festival.
The bishop also recognized the
Order of the Alhambras Bejar
Chapter No. 56, who assisted as
ushers, as well as the Knights of
Columbus.
The festive day continued in
the community center with food,
refreshments, entertainment and a
splendid time for community fellowship. A group called the Jesus
Mary Joseph Band from St. Mary
Magdalen Church was the first to
perform.
Filipino dancers of San Antonio
performed several dances and
amazed attendees as they danced
with lit candles in each hand and
on top of their heads. The Hermann Sons Polkateers, under the
direction of Stephanie Gonzales,
performed several lively, fun and
fast German polkas.
The last performance to close out
the day was by the Flemish Folkdancers Belgium American Club
of Texas. They surprised Bishop
Yanta by inviting him to come up
and be part of their special dance.
A tall decorated Maypole with
flowers and long streaming red
and white ribbons was erected in
the middle of the dance floor. Each
dancer held a couple of ribbons
and with the music went around
and around the maypole, creating a
complex pattern of ribbon designs.
They reversed the process and the
goal was to unwind all of the ribbons, which they did successfully.
The Folklife Mass, heralding the
Texas Folklife Festival, began in
1977 and the last one of this kind
was celebrated in 2003.
The Texas Catholic Conference
on Community Ethnic Affairs
(TCC-CEA) was the sponsor of
those Masses.
Though not active locally for the
past dozen years, the TCC-CEA
was committed to celebrating ethnicity and culture in the Catholic
faith community of Texas, and
to facilitating the blending of the
culture and history of each ethnic
group into the rich fabric of the
Catholic faith.

La Prensa de San Antonio Los billetes de 10 dólares tendrán
un rostro de mujer en 2020

los billetes de 10 dólares estadounidenses a partir de 2020,

aún se desconoce quién será la
figura histórica que aparezca en

“Vamos a pasar mucho tiempo
este verano escuchando a la
gente”, dijo Lew al respecto,
una decisión que según apuntan

dilucidarse este otoño.
No obstante, llevará cerca de
cinco años que el nuevo billete
esté en circulación debido a la
complicada planificación que requiere el rediseño, que además incorporará nuevos métodos contra

Though the Municipal Court
Truancy Program serves 16 school
districts and charter schools in
Bexar County, SAISD accounts
for 47 percent of truancy cases
filed. Demographic research
verifies that the east side of San
Antonio represents a majority of
cases under the domain of the
program with many resulting in
a warrant for failure to appear.
“The Truancy Court annex
scheduled to open in August will
greatly contribute to the educational outcomes of the Eastside
Promise Zone,” said Dr. Mike
Etienne, the City’s Promise Zone
director. “Our goal is to ensure
that all residents have equal access to opportunity by improving
educational opportunities, creating jobs and increasing economic
activity.”

designated a Promise Zone by
the White House in January
2014. The Promise Zone is a
partnership with the federal
government and the community
to transform the east side from a
high poverty area into a vibrant,
safe and healthy mixed-income
community.

the popularity of the destination boomed 1968 when the
city hosted the World’s Fair.

study report conducted by Dr.

million non-resident visitors
come to San Antonio for the
primary reason of visiting the
River Walk. Additionally, it is
estimated that residents make
about 2.2 million trips to the
River Walk resulting in a total
of about 11.5 million visitors
annually. This is most likely a
conservative estimate because
it does not include those visitors who visit the River Walk
but whose primary purpose in
traveling to the area was for
some other reason.

This summer, construction on
SAT’s (San Antonio International Airport) $165.6 million Consolidated Rental Car Facility, or
CONRAC, is set to commence.
Funded by a Customer Facility Charge, the CONRAC will
provide a conveniently located
facility for customers renting and
returning vehicles at SAT. When
complete, the facility will house
up to 13 car rental brands in the
same customer service lobby,
serving as a one-stop location
for vehicle pickup and return,
as well as a Quick Turn Around
(QTA) facility for the rental
agencies.
The same facility will include
short-term public parking for
airport customers.
Located on the site of the existing hourly garage across from
the terminals, the new facility
allows customers quick, easy access via a pedestrian sky bridge.
Once completed, the facility
will improve customer service,
make the rental car process
more efficient, environmentally
friendly and ease terminal curbside congestion.

the 30-year old hourly garage is
set to be demolished and hourly

through a Customer Facility
Charge (CFC), paid only by individuals renting a vehicle at
the airport, and not by taxes or
the City’s General Fund. The
CONRAC is scheduled to open
March 2018 with the public parking levels open at an earlier date.

El fin de semana anterior en
San Antonio se celebró el 44
aniversario de Texas Folk Life
Festival que –por más de cuatro
décadas– es el aparador ideal
que muestra la riqueza de la
cultura del Estado.
Este festival ofreció una gran
variedad artística y cultural
en la que participaron 40 grupos folclóricos representando
diferentes países; desde Asia
con danzas de Corea, hasta la
el extremo sur del continente
americano con una academia de
baile chilena.
El sábado 13 y el domingo 14
de junio, en terrenos del museo
Institute of Texan Cultures, el
festival abrió sus puertas para
que miles de visitantes disfrutaran de un programa musical
ininterrumpido en 4 escenarios
y tuvieran la oportunidad de
admirar y adquirir artesanías
de diferentes partes del mundo,
sin que faltaran los platillos

Tras 23 años de honorable servicio militar, Quetzal Jiménez, exsoldado del U.S. Army, retornó a
San Antonio, donde estuvo estacionado en Fort Sam Houston de 1998 al 2001. Jiménez realizó tours
por Kuwait, Alemania, Irak, Japón, Corea del Sur y Hawai, con entrenamientos en Fort Raleigh,
Carolina del Norte. Ahora, tras su retiro del Army, Jiménez se establecerá en San Antonio con su
familia y abrirá un taller de madera. En la foto lo acompañan familiares y amistades, entre ellas
su mamá Teresa Jiménez y su gentil esposa Maribel (blusa oscura). Bienvenido, Quetzal, y gracias
por servir al país.
En el Coliseo Freeman, la intérprete Janay Gardner cantó el Himno Nacional en el partido de

Alamo Brewery hosts FatherFest Celebrate Father’s Day at Pearl!

throw a Father’s Day bash with a
cause. The event will be held this
Sunday, June 21, from 12 to 6
p.m. with free admission, and will
include food, live music, familyfriendly activities, and plenty of
beer. Dads and family can enjoy
the Kiolbassa sausage cook-off,
featuring local chefs and celebrity judges. Also included will
be a variety of fun “dad stuff:” a
mobile barber, cigar rollers, trucks
and more! REI, Club Humidor,

and will provide fun activities.

The Briscoe Western Art Museum is pleased to announce “Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe,” offering
free admission on Tuesday nights
from 4 to 9 p.m. along with planned
programming such as concerts, gallery talks, dance performances and
lectures. The Briscoe Museum is

stored 1930s neo classical/art deco
building that was home to the
City’s original library and later the
Hertzburg Circus Museum, the
Briscoe Museum showcases the art
of the American West through contemporary and historic paintings,
sculptures, photography, artifacts,
weapons, and more.
Nine galleries spread across
the Museum’s three floors feature
works by Frederic Remington,
members of the Taos Society of
Artists, Maynard Dixon, Howard
Terpning, Z.S. Liang and Allan
Houser. Highlights include dramatic displays of intricate saddles and
spurs; Pancho Villa’s last known
saddle; an interactive diorama of
the Alamo; Santa Anna’s sword; an
authentic replica Wells Fargo Stage
Coach; a Comanchero jacket; a 16th
century Manila Galleon trade chest,
and listening stations with songs and
stories of the West.
The Briscoe’s free admission program also coincides with the City’s

Gloria Trevi lanza “Como yo te amo” Disney prepares ‘Maleficent’ sequel

in Linda Woolverton to write
the screenplay for the sequel to
‘Maleficent’ according to entertainment blog Deadline.
Deadline reported Monday
that Woolverton -who wrote the
script of the first part- has also
been signed for ‘Alice Through
the Looking Glass’, a continuation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’
set for a 2016 release, with Mia

Rock group “Mana” condemn Donald
Trump’s anti-Latin statements

“Mana” defended the dignity of
Mexican immigrants following
business tycoon Donald Trump’s
verbal attack against the community during his presidential
campaign speech.
“There is a person named Donald
Trump who made very violent
statements, full of hate against
Mexicans and Latin Americans;
called them rapists, criminals,
drug traffickers, and that they
were rubbish,” said Fher Olvera,
leader of the group, at a press
conference preceding the concert
for the ‘Burning Bed’ tour at the
Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Angelina Jolie is expected to
reprise the role of Maleficent in
the sequel too.
The first part was a huge success, earning more than $750
million worldwide.
It marked the return of Disney
to the world of ‘The Sleeping
Beauty’ with a version narrated
from the point of view of the villain, played by Jolie.
In the film, she brings to life
Olvera, also a guitarist, and
his bandmates Juan Calleros,
Sergio Vallin and Alex Gonzalez, reacted to Trump’s accusations after the sound test of their
performance on Thursday in Los
Angeles.
‘Burning Bed’ is the group’s
latest album, whose runaway
success got them a platinum disc
from the label Warner Music
Latin.
“It makes me sad because Mexicans have come to help build this
country and it is sad that someone
with so much hatred in his heart
has a microphone to say these
things,” he said about the state-
ments made by Trump, after
he announced his presidential
nomination for the Republican
Party on Tuesday.
He added such hatred was last
seen in German and Nazi films
and demonstrated “an excessive
xenophobia.”
“We are very angry with
Trump, because many Latinos
are construction workers who
have helped build his buildings
and he is forgetting that they are
the ones working hard to build the
United States,” Gonzalez said.
Mana was created in 1986 and
has won 11 Grammies and 14
Billboard awards among others.

semana para conmemorar el 40
aniversario de su estreno en Estados Unidos el 20 de junio de 1975,
una fecha clave para entender
la estrategia actual veraniega de
Hollywood y determinante para la
carrera de Steven Spielberg.
La cinta sobre un gran tiburón blanco que amenaza a una
apacible villa costera pervive en
el imaginario colectivo tanto por
sus escenas acuáticas como por la
banda sonora de John Williams,
que fue merecedora de uno de los
tres Óscar que se llevó el filme
en 1976.
“Jaws” reaparecerá con la mandíbula abierta en 500 salas de
cine este domingo en EEUU de
la mano de Tuner Classic Movies
y Universal Pictures, el mismo
estudio que hace cuatro décadas
estuvo cerca de matar al escualo
antes de que asomara su aleta
dorsal en la gran pantalla.
Lo cierto es que, en origen, nadie imaginó que “Jaws” se fuera a
convertir en el éxito que fue.
Se trataba de un proyecto menor
para Universal Studios, que aquel
año tenía sus esperanzas puestas
en “The Hindenburg”, un largometraje sobre el histórico desastre
del homónimo zeppelín alemán
cuyo presupuesto cuadruplicaba
al del tiburón, fijado en cerca de 4
millones de dólares (17,5 millones
actuales).
Spielberg, que tenía 27 años,
había dirigido solo un filme (“The
Sugarland Express”), era desconocido en la industria y se sumó al
proyecto de rebote.
Los productores Richard Zanuck y David Brown prefirieron a
otro realizador, aunque el puesto
quedó finalmente vacante por
diferencias creativas.
Zanuck creyó en el talento del
joven cineasta, según contaría
años más tarde en el documental
“Jaws: The Inside Story” (2010),
al que protegió frente al estudio
cuando las cosas se empezaron
a torcer.
“Jaws” era un proyecto oportunista basado en el “bestseller”

Cuando Spielberg se puso al
frente tomó la decisión de rodar en
el océano –en la costa atlántica frente
al pueblo Martha’s Vineyard, en
Massachusetts– lo que supuso un
desafío técnico que no imaginó.
Hasta entonces, Hollywood
había evitado el mar abierto
por ser un entorno a merced de
elementos incontrolables.
El realizador, no obstante,
quería la textura de las olas, el
realismo de la fuerza del mar que,
por aquellas fechas, no se podía
simular por ordenador y no se
terminaba de lograr en un tanque
de agua en un estudio o en un lago.
La experiencia confirmó los
temores de los veteranos de la
industria.
El rodaje sufrió interrupciones
constantes, unas veces por problemas meteorológicos y otras,
las más, por fallos técnicos que
obligaron a Spielberg a replantearse la forma de hacer la película.
Los modelos de tiburones mecanizados fabricados para “Jaws”
y que iban a ser los protagonistas
se estropeaban tanto que no se
avanzaba, así que el realizador
optó por prescindir de ellos para
gran parte de las escenas.
“¿Qué haría Hitchcock en una
situación así?”, se preguntó Spielberg, que decidió sustituir el pez
por planos subjetivos y tomas en
las que se percibe su presencia
bajo la superficie aunque nunca
se le ve.

fourth film in the dinosaur saga
created by Steven Spielberg,
made U.S. movie history lastwhar weekend by raking in
$209 million at the box office,
according to estimates made
public on Monday.
The earnings exceeded the
$207.4 million garnered by “The
Avengers” when it was released
in May 2012.
The film earned a total of
$516 million worldwide, the
largest-ever box office bonanza
for an international release,
ahead of “Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows - Part 2,”
which had held the record to
date by earning $483.2 million.
“This is absolutely a fourquadrant movie and is working
on so many levels. The release
date was awesome, and everybody stayed off of our date,”
said Universal Pictures domestic
distribution chief Nick Carpou.
The film opened in 4,273
theaters around the country another record - and did very
well in theaters with 3D, which
brought in 48 percent of the
income, and in Imax locales,
which contributed $44 million
to the total box office receipts.
The film, directed by Colin
Trevorrow, takes the dino-action
to a luxury tourist resort where
visitors interact with prehistoric
creatures in their own habitat,
but the resort’s staff become
involved in a nightmare when
a genetically modified animal
escapes and threatens to destroy
everything in its path.
The plot focuses on a former
military expert on animal behavior, played by Chris Pratt,
who tries to avert a potential
tragedy. Also starring in the film
are Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty
Simpkins and Judy Greer.

Runner of the Woods
release debut effort

On July 10, Nashville, Tennessee’s Runner of the Woods will
release their debut album “Thirsty
Valley.” For front man Nick Beaudoing, its release means light
at the end of the tunnel.
‘Easy on Me’ best represents
the vibe we were going for on
this record, a sound I like to call
‘countrygaze’” Beaudoing tells
Guitar World. “Think of a thousand-yard stare that accompanies
boozy recollections of perfect
northern lakes and some girl you
used to know.”
Last month, “The Bluegrass
Situation” premiered “Eastern
Time,” the first track to be released from the album.
2014 was spent in the shadow
of a serious family illness for
Beaudoing. His mother was in a
coma in his hometown of Dallas,
Texas, and her condition was dire
enough to require him to leave his
wife and child behind for weeks
at a time. Between visits to Texas,
he would return to Nashville and
stay busy in the studio, where
he occupied his mind with the
writing and recording of “Thirsty
Valley.”
Due to his mother’s illness,
completing “Thirsty Valley”
meant recording at night, after
first working at his day job and
then checking in with his family.
This cycle was punctuated with
periodic trips back to Dallas to
care for his mother, whose condition gradually began to improve.
Just when it seemed that his
schedule couldn’t get any more
hectic, he received the welcome
news that he and his wife would
be expecting another baby.
“The past year was trying, but
in a few short months the difficulties gave way to good things: my
mother made a near-full recovery.
I had another son. And now I have
a record with a new band that I’m
really proud of. It turns out I was
right to be hopeful.”
The album was recorded at
the Toy Box Studio in Nashville,
TN and Russell Street Recording
where he enlisted guitar slinger
Josh Kaufman (Josh Ritter, Dawn
Landes) to give the songs a
spaced out, dreamy quality. He
also recruited pedal steel guitarist Jonathan Gregg (the Doc
Marshalls), whose ferocity on

Beaudoing previously led
NYC’s Cajun honky-tonkers the
Doc Marshalls. Over the course of
three releases, the band evolved
from Bakersfield-style shuffles
and Acadian barnburners to jagged, glimmering folk. “Thirsty
Valley” actually began as the
band’s fourth record. This new
musical direction combined with
his relocation to Nashville a few
years earlier, lead Beaudoing
away from the Doc Marshalls and
start Runner of the Woods.
Runner of the Woods will
support “Thirsty Valley” with a
summer tour.

Cirque du Soleil creará show
inspirado en Soda Stereo

Soda Stereo, uno de los grupos
de rock argentino más famosos en
Latinoamérica, recibirá un nuevo
homenaje con la producción en
curso de un show inspirado en su
música por Cirque du Soleil.
Cirque du Soleil, una compañía
con sede en Quebec, ya trabaja
en conjunto con PopArt Musica,
empresa argentina, los dos integrantes restantes de Soda Stereo
y Sony Music para crear un show
inspirado en la música y la historia
del grupo.
El proyecto se llega después de
dos años de conversaciones. Y
meses después del fallecimiento
en Buenos Aires de Gustavo Cerati, vocalista de la banda, después
de un prolongado coma de cuatro
años debido a un accidente cerebro
vascular durante un concierto en
Venezuela.
La producción de Cirque du
Soleil seguirá el modelo de show
anteriores sobre The Beatles Love
y Michael Jackson The Immortal
World Tour, inspiradas en la vida
y la obra de estos íconos de la
música.
Este proyecto cuenta apoyo del
Ministerio de Cultura de la Ciudad
de Buenos Aires. Tiene previsto
su estreno en Buenos Aires en
2017, para luego girar por toda
Latinoamérica.
Con motivo de este anuncio,
Charly Alberti, baterista de la
banda, comentó: “Después de la
gira del regreso de Soda en 2007
era difícil pensar en algo superador. Ahora, de la mano del Cirque
du Soleil, se abre para nosotros un
nuevo mundo de expectativas. Es
realmente conmovedor”.

Íconos del rock latino
Soda Stereo fue creado a finales
de la década de los años 70 en
Buenos Aires (Argentina). Su
música empezó a sonar muy fuerte
en Suramérica y luego por toda
Latinoamérica en los años ochenta.
La banda grabó siete discos. El
primero de su mismo nombre y
luego vendrían “Nada personal”
(1985), “Signos” (1986), “Doble
vida” (1988), “Canción animal”
(1990), “Dynamo” (1992) y “Sueño Stereo” (1995).
De estos discos se extraen famosas canciones como “Cuando pase
el temblor”, “Nada Personal”, “De
música ligera”, entre otras.
Posteriormente, el vocalista
Gustavo Adrián Cerati (ya convertido en una leyenda del rock
argentino) se lanzó como solista
y publicó cinco álbumes en los
años 90.
