BOARD OF EDUCATION
In 2010, leaders in the Little Lake City School District community established a
foundation to enrich and support educational programs for our students. “LLEAF”
stands for Little Lake Educational Advancement Foundation. The LLEAF Board of
Directors governs the foundation and consists of fifteen members, including LLEAF
Board President Mike Mendez. LLEAF Board members Lynn Berg and Hilda Zamora
represent the school district Board of Education.
LLEAF sponsors two major fundraisers each year: a golf tournament typically held in March
and a fireworks sale in July. Proceeds from these fundraisers provide direct support to our
students through grants awarded to Little Lake teachers, principals, and library media specialists
each fall. Over the last three years, LLEAF has awarded approximately $75,000 in classroom
grants of up to $1,000 each. Some of the enriching opportunities our students have experienced
include live performances by the Los Angeles Performing Arts Center, Science on the Go, Native
American dancers, as well as library books and other classroom technology learning tools.
LLEAF actively seeks and welcomes support from the entire Little Lake community
for our fundraisers and activities. If you are interested in supporting the foundation,
please contact Bertha Aranda at 562-868-8241, ext 2244.

de Los Ángeles, Science on the Go, Bailarines Nativos Americanos,

Dr. Perez’s message is so
important. We all need goals and it
is obvious he is focused on academic
success for the students. His other
message of No Bully in LLCSD is an
important part of student success.
It is encouraging to see the District
addressing the issue of bullying in
schools and for parents to be aware
of how they may help their child who
is the bully or the target.
Our next issue is January 14,
2015. Have a Happy Thanksgiving,
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
We are always mindful of our men

grateful for their service.

Introducing the Common Core
With the new Common Core in place, our students are now
expected to be able to read and write in all curricular areas as
well as construct and defend arguments and opinions.
We are implementing a new strategy at Cresson called
“Interactive Editing” to help our students address these
standards and make connections between reading and writing.
During this process the students read an article or passage

then apply this knowledge to their own work.
I recently had an opportunity to observe this program in action in Mr. Fisher’s
fourth-grade classroom. The students first read an article about character
traits, independently underlined key words, negotiated the importance of
various words and terms, and then used the selected words to construct their
own sentences.
The discussion that ensued allowed students to agree or challenge one
another about the passage. Their arguments were thoughtful and always
related to the text. It was a great beginning!

I am extremely proud to be the principal of Jersey Avenue

amazing parent support, a dedicated and effective staff, and the
most amazing students around.
With such high levels of support, the Jersey community is
jumping into the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS)

use technology effectively throughout their lives. While there
is no substitute for academic knowledge in the core areas of
mathematics, English, science, and social science, it is important for students,
the industry leaders of the future, to be more than just computer literate; they
need to be tech savvy. Technology changes everything! I am excited to lead
Jersey into this shift in education, and I am excited to do it with the amazing
support of the staff, parents, and students. Together we will do whatever it
takes to make sure that Jersey students are successful and that they are college
and career ready when they leave for middle school, high school, and beyond.

Extended Benefits for Our Children!
Free child care! Lakeland Elementary School is happy to offer
child-care options. Each of our before- and after-school programs
is designed to meet the specific needs of our students and
families. Before school, we have Stone Soup, a fee-based program
in which students begin their day at 6:30 a.m. Also, we have
offered before-school English-language tutoring for our students
whose first language is not English.

Our after-school child-care programs are geared to

supplement our instructional day. Stone Soup resumes in the
afternoon, or parents can select to have their children in Think Together, which
is free. Both programs end at 6 p.m. In these programs, students receive help
with homework, participate in activities, and practice good choices. In addition,
our Gifted and Talented Education Program occurs after school to provide
another layer of fun.
Overall, Lakeland strives to meet the varying needs of our students
throughout the school day and beyond.

A Most Promising Beginning!
It is hard to believe that we have completed our first month of
school. Although the time went by quickly, quite a bit happened
here at Lake Center Middle School.
The first day of school was met with a bit more excitement
than usual as students returned to modernized classrooms
and buildings. We again began the year with our Student
Responsibility Assembly. During this assembly, school rules,
Dr. Bill Crean
behavior expectations and the “No Bully” policy was presented

and reviewed. We had a very successful Back-to-School Night,
with many families coming on campus to kick off the school year. In September,
ASB elections were held, and our campus clubs began their activities. Also
during the first month of school, our classrooms began full implementation of
the California Common Core Standards and the new math adoption.
The 2014–15 school year has begun, and Lake Center is ready for another
exciting year!

Settling Into a Great Year
Our launch into the new school year was very exciting! Back
to School Night was especially memorable, as we also conducted
a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the modernization of our
school. In attendance were all of our LLCSD board members:
President Lynn Berg, Vice President Janet Rock, Clerk Richard
Martinez, and Board Members George Buchanan and Hilda Zamora.
Also present were Superintendent Dr. Perez, Council Members
Ana Gutierrez
Mike Mendez and Luigi Vernola from the City of Norwalk, various
Principal
community partners, and, most notably, our families and staff.
The families attended teacher presentations and enjoyed tours of our newly
renovated classrooms, which include new equipment and furniture.
We are so grateful to the community for supporting our schools by passing
Measures EE and TT. What a meaningful contribution to our young students
and the staff that educates them! Now, as we settle in and move forward into
the school year, our teachers and students are becoming more familiar with the
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the higher levels of thinking they
inspire. Students are learning concepts at a deeper level now, and they apply
what they learn to everyday situations.
Lakeside has already established CCSS-friendly programs, such as AVID,
STEM, SHEG (eighth-grade history), Accelerated Reader (in the sixth through
eighth grades), the new Houghton Mifflin math program, and more! Besides
providing a rigorous instructional program, our Lakeside staff members also
create a safe and welcoming environment for the students and their families.
