The LLEAF Board of Directors governs the foundation and consists of fifteen members, including LLEAF Board President Mike Mendez. LLEAF Board members Lynn Berg and Hilda Zamora represent the school district Board of Education. LLEAF sponsors two major fundraisers each year: a golf tournament typically held in March and a fireworks sale in July. Proceeds from these fundraisers provide direct support to our students through grants awarded to Little Lake teachers, principals, and library media specialists each fall. Over the last three years, LLEAF has awarded approximately $75,000 in classroom grants of up to $1,000 each. Some of the enriching opportunities our students have experienced include live performances by the Los Angeles Performing Arts Center, Science on the Go, Native American dancers, as well as library books and other classroom technology learning tools. LLEAF actively seeks and welcomes support from the entire Little Lake community for our fundraisers and activities. If you are interested in supporting the foundation, please contact Bertha Aranda at 562-868-8241, ext 2244. We are implementing a new strategy at Cresson called “Interactive Editing” to help our students address these standards and make connections between reading and writing. During this process the students read an article or passage Linda Rigg systematically to learn how good writing is constructed. They Principal then apply this knowledge to their own work. I recently had an opportunity to observe this program in action in Mr. Fisher’s fourth-grade classroom. The students first read an article about character traits, independently underlined key words, negotiated the importance of various words and terms, and then used the selected words to construct their own sentences. The discussion that ensued allowed students to agree or challenge one another about the passage. Their arguments were thoughtful and always related to the text. It was a great beginning! Jersey Michael is working hard to get connected and to prepare students to Trimmell Principal use technology effectively throughout their lives. While there is no substitute for academic knowledge in the core areas of mathematics, English, science, and social science, it is important for students, the industry leaders of the future, to be more than just computer literate; they need to be tech savvy. Technology changes everything! I am excited to lead Jersey into this shift in education, and I am excited to do it with the amazing support of the staff, parents, and students. Together we will do whatever it takes to make sure that Jersey students are successful and that they are college and career ready when they leave for middle school, high school, and beyond. Stone Soup resumes in the afternoon, or parents can select to have their children in Think Together, which is free. Both programs end at 6 p.m. In these programs, students receive help with homework, participate in activities, and practice good choices. It is hard to believe that we have completed our first month of school. Although the time went by quickly, quite a bit happened here at Lake Center Middle School. The first day of school was met with a bit more excitement than usual as students returned to modernized classrooms and buildings. We again began the year with our Student Responsibility Assembly. During this assembly, school rules, Dr. Bill Crean behavior expectations and the “No Bully” policy was presented Principal and reviewed. We had a very successful Back-to-School Night, with many families coming on campus to kick off the school year. In September, ASB elections were held, and our campus clubs began their activities. Also during the first month of school, our classrooms began full implementation of the California Common Core Standards and the new math adoption. The 2014–15 school year has begun, and Lake Center is ready for another exciting year! 4 www.schoolnewsrollcall.com Lakeview Elementary 11500 Joslin St., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670 • 562/868-8655 • http://lakeview.llcsd.net/ Literary Learning At Lakeview Elementary School, we are proud to partner with the Santa Fe Springs Library to provide English Language and Literacy Intensive (ELLI) services to our students. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Perez, Council Members Ana Gutierrez Mike Mendez and Luigi Vernola from the City of Norwalk, various Principal community partners, and, most notably, our families and staff. The families attended teacher presentations and enjoyed tours of our newly renovated classrooms, which include new equipment and furniture. We are so grateful to the community for supporting our schools by passing Measures EE and TT. What a meaningful contribution to our young students and the staff that educates them! Now, as we settle in and move forward into the school year, our teachers and students are becoming more familiar with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the higher levels of thinking they inspire. Students are learning concepts at a deeper level now, and they apply what they learn to everyday situations.
