1st Sat. only
In today’s Gospel from Mark, Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah as he addressed the Pharisees, reminding them that they are hypocrites: “The people
honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me,” Jesus said.
Unfortunately, some of us may fall into the same category.
We may attend Mass regularly; we may pray daily; we even may be supportive of the Church with our time, talent, and treasure as good stewards.
However, Jesus is challenging us to do more than just make the appearance
of being a good Catholic. The root Greek word for “hypocrite” is hypokrisis,
which meant one “who is an actor” or one “who wears a mask.” The Lord’s
point is that we must reach deeper and strive to have Him in our hearts.
Our society is quite taken with images and appearances. We need to recognize that Jesus sees through and beyond what we appear to be and do, and
He sees into our hearts and souls. This may make us uncomfortable, but it
is something with which we must deal on a daily basis. Whatever we do and
whatever we may pursue needs to be motivated by love of the Lord and of
“our neighbor.” Love like that — having our hearts close to Jesus — is work,
but it is a labor worth pursuing.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE
WEEK OF AUGUST 30 /
REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD
PARA LA SEMANA DEL 30 DE AGOSTO
Podemos asistir a misa regularmente; podemos orar diariamente; podemos

from our
pa r o c h i a l v i c a r ,
fr. Salvador Landa
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/
Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima,
“THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH
THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEARTS
ARE FAR FROM ME…”
According to the dictionary the word
HYPOCRITE comes from the Greek word
hypokrites, which means “stage actor,
pretender, dissember.” So we can think of a
hypocrite as a person who pretends to be a
certain way, but really acts and believes the
total opposite. Jesus called the Pharisees
hypocrites. They pretended to be very holy,
following all kinds of customs, such as
washing their hands before meals. Washing
hands before meals was not part of Mosaic Law but a tradition of the
rabbis, the religious leaders of synagogues. Jesus told them that they
worship God with empty words and do not really live according to
God’s ways, that they worry too much about some traditions. At my
ordination ceremony Bishop McFarland (R.I.P) said that a priest must
live what he preaches. The same goes for all Catholics. We must act
according to the teachings of Christ at the liturgies in church as well
as any other place all the time. With God’s grace this is possible.
No podemos tener

FOR FURTHER REFLECTION/PAR A MÁS REFLEXIÓN
In today’s Gospel, Jesus wasn’t objecting to the observance of Jewish law
but rather the disposition of the hearts of those who adhered to those
laws. God’s law and the keeping of that law point to the underlying
relationship – the covenantal relationship between God and his people.
Laws are not written or followed for their own sake – laws (God’s law
and by extension human law) are given for the good of the people – the
good of the community. Living by God’s law and the human laws which
flow from that brings us into right relationship with God and with one
another. When laws are kept in this way, they are liberating.
◆◆ What laws do you blindly follow without considering their true
purpose?
◆◆ How does this impact your relationships?
◆◆ How does faithfully living God’s law strengthen your relationship
with God? With others in your life?
Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Dt 4:1-2, 6-8; Jas 1:1718, 21-22, 27; Mk 7:31-37] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/
readings/083015.cfm
◆◆
