(Readings: Zephaniah 3:14-18; Philippians 4:4-7; Luke 3:10-18) St. Luke tells us that people asked John the Baptist what they should do. This was in response to his calling them a “brood of vipers” and demanding that they show signs of genuine repentance. Their question could have taken a very different form, such as: “Who do you think you are? Why should we listen to you?” It would seem natural to be indignant when confronted by such harsh comments. People could have just walked away. No doubt some people did. But others asked his advice. There must have been something about John that invited just such a reply. I have often had occasion to note in this column that some of Mary’s words at La Salette are by no means easy to hear—unless, of course, we take them as addressed to someone else, to “those people,” not to us. We must remember that the strong words of John the Baptist were not recorded simply out of a sense of historical accuracy. They served as a reminder to the Christians who would read them or hear them, that they should also act on them. It takes much less time to lose good habits than it does to develop them. Both the Gospel and the message of La Salette remind us of this. We hear the word and respond with various good resolutions. But then we can get distracted or even discouraged. John’s advice to those who asked was eminently practical: share your clothes and food with the poor, do not practice extortion, etc. The Beautiful Lady of La Salette takes a similar basic approach, especially when she reminds us of the importance of prayer. Her entire discourse is in fact so down to earth that academics and theologians are more likely than “ordinary folk” to take offense at it. Even people who never miss Church can ask themselves, as they hear Mary’s complaints about people not going to Mass, whether their own presence and participation is all it might be. They (we) too can ask, “What should we do?” The goal, after all, is that the Lord might “rejoice over us in gladness” and “renew us in his love.” Sacrificial Giving Fostering Stewardship as a way of life for Blessed Trinity Catholic Church Weekend of December 5th & 6th, 2015 Offertory: $17,643.84 Debt Reduction: $3,038 EFT: $1,397.37 EFT: $430 In today’s Gospel we hear the prophet John the Bap st being asked a profound stewardship ques on: “What should we do?” Each group wants to know the appropriate response to John’s call; each reply points to how they should treat others. John does not simply say, “Be bap‐ zed.” Rather, he points them to their jobs and personal rela onships. The message of John the Bap st is simple: judgment is near, and repentance includes trea ng others well. We should be willing to share what we have with those in need. To listen to John the Bap st is to be called to account. Do I give only of my excess, or am I the good stew‐ ard who is willing to sacrifice in order to help others? Their big wish is to have enough time to shop & wrap gifts before the hustle & bustle of the season impacts their own family. If your family needs help for Christmas, please call the Parish Office at 407-277-1702 as soon as possible so information can be given to the host families. We also invite anyone who would like to adopt a family for Christmas (shop for, wrap & deliver gifts to the parish for distribution) to call the office and let us know of your interest so we can match families to shoppers. Special Collection for Retirement Fund for Religious December 12th & 13th, 2015 Tens of thousands of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have dedicated their lives to sharing their faith. Generations of Catholics recall with gratitude their work in Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies. Yet years of ministering for little or no pay came at a price, and now their religious communities lack adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. www.retiredreligious.org December 13th, 2015 Blessed Trinity Catholic Church — www.BlessedTrinityOrlando.org Page 5 BLESSED TRINITY CHRISTMAS SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Blessed Trinity Christmas Mass Schedule Christmas Eve—December 24th (Holy Day of ObligaƟon) Mass at 4pm—6pm—11:15 Interlude Christmas Music—12pm Christmas Day—December 25th (Holy Day of ObligaƟon) Mass at 8am—10am—12pm (Spanish) Solemnity of Mary Mother of God (Holy Day of ObligaƟon) New Years Eve (Vigil)—December 31st Mass at 5pm New Years Day—January 1st Mass at 10am—12pm (Spanish) 2015 Thanksgiving Raffle Winners The BT Men's Club is pleased to announce the results of the drawing conducted on the 22nd of November 2015 after the 10 AM Sunday Mass. December 13th, 2015 Blessed Trinity Catholic Church — www.BlessedTrinityOrlando.org Page 9 Reflexion….
