Of course they were. The prophet Elisha fed a hundred men with twenty barley loaves in order to prove God’s power. This same miracle, now multiplied by more people fed by fewer loaves, is attributed to Jesus in all four Gospels. In today’s passage from John we even have the detail that the loaves were barley, reminding every pious Jew of that miracle that Elisha worked. Yet Jesus went into hiding when they wanted to make him king. It is the passage from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians that gives us the reason for this. The power of Jesus comes from God. It is not meant to merely feed us, or to provide one group with a king. There is one Lord, one faith, one God and Father of all who works through Jesus Christ and through us all. ADORATION SCHEDULE SOME LEFT OVER It’s a common tendency to fear for the future. Will we have enough to pay our bills? Will there be another meal tonight? What will tomorrow bring, next week, next year? We are often sure we will never have enough to last the week or go around the table. Elisha’s servant in today’s first reading was just like us. He looked at the available food; he looked at the hungry men. Clearly, there wouldn’t be enough bread. Astonishingly, God did not promise there would be enough. God promised there would be more than enough. “There shall be some left over,” the Lord assured Elisha (2 Kings 4:44). Likewise, the disciples, when faced with hungry people, decided they could never afford to feed them all. There wasn’t enough money to buy so much bread. Jesus didn’t make any promises to his disciples. He simply took the bread that was available—one child’s lunch—blessed it and began to distribute it. While we are not told how much was left over in Elisha’s story, John takes care to report that, once again, as God had promised of old, there was some left over. In fact, there were twelve baskets full of the leftovers. WILL WE HAVE ENOUGH? Jesus told us to ask his Father for all that we need (John 16:23). He advised us never to worry about whether we would have enough (Matthew 6:25). What might happen if we took these words to heart? How can we take today’s Gospel and let it assure us that we, too, will be fed, and even given more than we need? Jesus cannot look at us and let us go hungry. He will do today what he did in his day. He will begin with what we already have, what we are prepared to share. He will bless it, distribute it, and provide enough for everyone—more than enough. INTEGRATED INTO SACRED HEART CHAPEL In an effort to bring more unity and move towards being one parish community, beginning next month in August, there will be no more Friday adoration at Holy Family. Currently and for the past several years, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place weekly in room #5 at Holy Family beginning at the conclusion of the 8am Mass until 5:45pm on Saturday, just prior to the 6pm Vigil Mass. In keeping with Bishop Ochoa’s vision that TCCOV is one parish community, we move forward in designating the Sacred Heart Chapel (located at the back of St. Mary’s Church) as the principle place for adoration. The following reasons are also part of why we are moving in this direction: • This chapel has the proper permission by bishop for its existence. • This will facilitate better coverage of existing Sa- cred Heart Chapel perpetual adoration schedule. • This increased coverage of adoration will also increase number of adorers, especially during late hours of the night making it safer with more people present; increased safety in numbers. • This will bring us all together as ONE community around the Eucharist. A meeting is set in the near future with the leaders to discuss this unification and its logistics. The ministerial group Adoración Nocturna, whose primary ministry is adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, will not be affected. WWW.TCCOV.ORG/EVENTS News Confession Schedule Changes Aug. 1 Beginning August 1st, the new schedule for Saturday morning Mass and confessions takes effect. The daily Mass on Saturday will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month. Confessions will be heard on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church. This is a good time to remind you as well that with the change to Saturdays, it is anticipated that there will be more faithful coming for weekly confession which means of course, that lines will be longer. In anticipation of this, we ask that you please be prepared for the sacrament in advance through a good Examination of Conscience. When you approach the priest for confession, you should be specific about what are YOUR sins. Please, there is no need to “justify” the sin by sharing with the priest the story about how the sin was committed and whose fault it was. Neither is this the time to expect the priest to counsel you or discuss other matters. If you have serious issues that need to be addressed outside of the confessional, contact the office and we will try to assist you as best we can. Following is a brief but excellent form that may be used for your Examination of Conscience which covers each of the 10 Commandments: I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me. Have I treated people, events or things as more important than God? You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Have my words, actively or passively, put down God, the Church, or people? Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day. Do I go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) and on Holy Days of Obligation (unless dispensed - August 15, November 1, December 8, December 25). Do I avoid, when possible, work that impedes worship to God, joy for the Lord’s Day, and proper relaxation of mind and body? Do I look for ways to spend time with family or in service on Sunday? Honor your father and your mother. Do I show my parents due respect? Do I seek to maintain good communication with my parents where possible? Do I criticize them for lacking skills I think they should have? You shall not kill. Have I harmed another through physical, verbal or emotional means, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? You shall not commit adultery. Have I respected the physical and sexual dignity of others and of myself? You shall not steal. Have I taken or wasted time or resources that belonged to another? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Have is gossiped, told likes or embellished stories at the expense of others? You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse. Have I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love? You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. Am I content with my own means and needs, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily? When you approach the priest, please start by making the sign of the Cross + and then saying: “Bless me father for I have sinned, it has been (state the amount of time, if you remember, since your last confession) these are my sins…….” After your confession, return to your seat to pray your Act of Contrition and the penance that the priest gave you. Facebook.com/tccov Giving Diocesan Missionary Cooperative Plan Each year, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, the Diocese of Fresno sponsors a mission appeal in every parish in the diocese of Fresno. Through our common baptism, we are all called to be missionaries, spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ to all corners of the world. Obviously, this is not physically possible for most of us so we are able to fulfill this mission through these annual appeals. TCCOV is happy to welcome Fr. Bede daSilva who will conduct the Missionary Appeal for his home diocese of Galle in Sri Lanka. We have been blessed to have Fr. Bede and several of his brother priests serve in the diocese of Fresno, including Fr. Shelton Fernando who was at St. Mary’s for several years, returning to Sri Lanka in 2004. Due to the number of weekend Masses at TCCOV, Fr. Bede will conduct the appeal over three weekends so he will be with us from July 20 until August 10. During this time, he will also supply as needed for weekday Masses, confessions and however else he is able to. The schedule for the appeal is as follows: July 25 & 26: St. Mary’s - 4:00pm, 7:00, 8:30 & 10:00am & 1:00pm August 1 & 2: St. Charles - 5:30pm 8:00 & 10:00am & 12:00pm St. Mary’s - 7:00 p.m. August 8 & 9: Holy Family - 6:00pm, 10:00am, 12:00 & 5:00pm PEARLE ZALUD SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE Scholarship funds are available to parishioners who are currently high school seniors who will be attending college full-time in the fall as well as for parishioners who are continuing full-time college students through the Pearle Zalud Scholarship Fund. To be eligible for this scholarship, full-time college students must have a college major in a music or agriculture related field of study. For those students with the appropriate college major and meeting the other application requirements noted, direct scholarships to be used for tuition and fees are available in the amounts of $200 (music) and $300 (agriculture). Applications with full requirement details are available at the church office during regular office hours or you may call the office and an application will be mailed to you. Upcoming & Ongoing Events SIMPLEMENTE UN RECORDATORIO….
