Thirteen students of UNO
Charter School Network
(UCSN) participated in
the Illinois Odyssey of
the Mind tournament last
month at SPC Daniel
Zizumbo in Archer Heights.
The Illinois Odyssey of the
Mind tournament invites
students to get creative in
give categories: vehicle,
technical, performance,
classics and balsa structure.
The students of UNO
Charter, composed of
5th and 6th graders, built
powered devices by rubber
bands and the classic story
of Pandora brought to life as
a video game. The UCSN
Zizumbo 5th grade team
is competing in technical,
bringing seven 11-year
olds to demonstrate their
ingenuity in building
rubber-band devices that
can complete specific tasks
such as raising a flag or
splitting an object in two.
The 5th grade students
must then integrate the
device they created into
a performance about a
technical failure and a
mysterious engineer. The
UCSN Zizumbo 6th team
chose classics, so six 12year olds will be delivering
an 8-minute performance
about a video game
modeled after the story
of Pandora’s Box. The
projects were unveiled on
March 21st.

Earth Day Tips to Share as a Family
By: Ashmar Mandou
There are many ways to
celebrate and explore the
beauty of nature. In honor
of Earth Day, we created
a list of activities that will
be fun for children to do
so that they can learn the
importance of caring for
the planet.
Up-Cycle Trash into an
Eco-Friendly Craft
Create a craft made from
recycled materials that
you can find at home or
in nature. Take it a step
further and make your own
craft supplies, too. They’re
easy to make, better for the
environment than storebought supplies, and save
you a ton of money to boot.
Take a Bike Ride
According to the U.S.
Department of Energy,
highway vehicles release
about 1.5 billion metric
tons of greenhouse gases
into the atmosphere each
year. Take a family bike
ride to one of the day’s
destinations, and ask your
children if they can think of
any other environmentallyfriendly
modes
of
transportation. You can get
the conversation started by
mentioning skateboards,
rollerblades, or even your
own two feet.
Feed the Birds
Even if you don’t have
time to build a bird feeder,
simply scattering some
seeds or bread crumbs in
your back yard will help
feed your feathered friends.
Ask your child to point out
all the different birds that
come to feast.
Open Your Windows
According to the EPA,
air pollutants in the
home can be 2-5 times
higher than outdoor air
pollutants. Throw open
your windows and let the
fresh spring air in! While
you’re at it, encourage
your kids to listen for
nature sounds and write
down what they hear.
Get Outside
Picking up trash in your
neighborhood, going on a
scavenger hunt, or planting
some flowers are all great
ways to enjoy the outdoors
and celebrate Earth Day.

NFL DRAFT TOWN
En cuanto a las artimañas
de NFL Draft Town, estas
ocurrirán del 30 de abril
al 2 de mayo, cuando el
NFL traiga experiencias
de fanáticos, competencias
de fútbol, entretenimiento
musical y mucho más.
Congress Plaza presentará
Selection Square, casa de
los 32 equipos de mesas
del Draft; Grant Park
quedará transformado en
Draft Town, presentado por
Oikos Triple Zero, festival
de fútbol interactivo de tres
días al aire libre abarcando
el tamaño de 15 campos
de fútbol. No se necesitan
boletos para Draft Town
presentado por Oikos
Triple Zero. Un número
liimitado de boletos están
disponibles para el Teatro
Auditorio y Selection
Square.

Hoy muchas formas
de celebrar y explorar la
belleza de la naturaleza.
En honor al Día del
Planeta creamos una lista
de actividades que serán
divertidas para los niños y
aprenderán la importancia
de cuidar al planeta.
De un paseo en Bicicleta
De acuerdo al
Departamento de Energía
de E.U., los vehículos en
las autopistas despiden
cerca de 1.5 mil millones
de toneladas métricas de
gases de invernadero a
la atmósfera cada año.
De un paseo familiar en
bicicleta a uno de los
lugares que tenga que ir
en el día y pregunte a sus
hijos si pueden pensar
en alguna otra forma de
transportarse que sea mejor
para el ambiente. Puede
empezar la conversación
mencionando patinetas,
patines o inclusive sus
dos pies.
Alimente a las Aves
Aunque no tenga tiempo
de construir un comedero
para aves, simplemente
riegue algunas semillas o
migas de pan en su patio
trasero para dar de comer
a sus amigos plumíferos.
Pida a sus hijos que señalen
las diferentes clases de
aves que vienen a comer.
Abra sus Ventanas
De acuerdo a EPA,
los contaminantes en la
casa pueden ser de 2 a 5
veces mayores que los
contaminantes del exterior.
Abra sus ventanas y deje
que entre la fresca brisa
de primavera. Mientra lo
hace, anime a los niños a
que escuchen los sonidos
de la naturaleza y a que
escriban lo que oyen.
Salga Fuera
Recoger basura en su
barrio, buscar un tesoro
o plantar algunas flores
son una forma magnífica
de disfrutar al aire libre y
celebrar el Día del Planeta.
New Food Truck
Fest to Roll into Pilsen
A new neighborhood
festival is set to open in
Pilsen this summer. The
Pilsen Food Truck Fest,
which will feature and
benefit the Illinois Food
Truck Association, will
consist of more than 40
food trucks from around
the state to offer up sample
size portions of their
best eats. West Town’s
Empty Bottle Presents
will be programming
the live music stage and
Revolution Brewery will
likely be sponsor.
