Saint John the Evangelist
“Wherever God rules over the human heart as
king, there is the kingdom of God established!”
... This last Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King, challenging our
loyalties. “Long live Christ the King!” “Viva Cristo
Rey!” Pope Pius XI instituted the feast in 1925, the
16th centenary of the First Council of Nicea, in 325,
which taught the unity of Christ with the Father,
and therefore, with the Father’s rule! As Pope Pius
XI said, when all recognize “both in private and in
public life, that Christ is King, society will at last
receive the great blessings of real liberty, well ordered discipline, peace and harmony.” Wow!
... Ordained a priest of the Apostles of Jesus on
November 24, 1990 in Uganda, was Associate Pastor in Mombasa, Kenya (1991-1993), Novice Director (1994-1996) and General Financial Administrator (1996-1998), in Nairobi, Kenya, further studies in Business Administration in Tanzania (19982001), Vicar-General of the Apostles of Jesus
(2002-2008), and then at the Gregorian Pontifical
University in Rome for Biblical Studies (20082014). And now, here with us at Saint John, via the
Imperial Valley. That’s the first 25 years of generous and faithful service by Father Ben. Celebrate
his 25th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination with
him this Sunday (22) after morning Masses in the
hall. Refreshments are being served. Special envelopes are available for your convenience! Come
along and greet Father Ben. Congratulations!
... All children in 2nd Grade through 12th Grade
are invited to be part of the special choir for our
6:00pm Children’s Christmas Eve Mass. Contact
Julie Marner, our Music Director, at 760 753-6254

... Saint John School students were busy last week at
‘Astro Camp’, while others were exploring the
depths of the ‘Star of India’ on San Diego Harbor.

... This Thanksgiving, may we be ever grateful for
what we have, generous to those without, and know
the blessings of love, hope and peace!
... “Gratitude is the attitude of beatitude!” Happy
Thanksgiving!

For good reason, Americans have been ambivalent
about “kings” for many years, even long before George
III’s troops were sent packing in 1776. To say Christ is our
King is to make a statement not about our politics, but about
the dignity of our own identity. At our baptism, the crown
of our head was once slathered (or at last dabbed) with oil
while the Church prayed “as Christ was anointed priest,
prophet and king, so may you live always as his body.” To
celebrate Christ’s kingship, then, is to claim our own identity.
Your head was anointed just as Samuel poured oil over
David’s head. David had his gifts, but he was no prize, and
perhaps that might comfort you as you think about your call,
out of the messiness of your own life, to stretch into a lifestyle that is marked by worship, by prophetic speech and
deeds, and the kingly ability to fashion a world (or at least a
patch of it) where relationships are marked by justice,
mercy, and cultivation of the good. It is precisely because of
this kingly role that our faith community has something to
say about the environment, about the dignity of human life,
just wages, access to health care and education, the building
of peace, and avoidance of war. In a few weeks’ time we
will hymn the coming of the “newborn king,” but today we
sketch out the meaning of his reign, and our own incorporation into his work for the life of the world.
