Pope Francis Prayer Intention & a Pentecostal Presence with Immigrants Such poe c language calls us to reflect on the mystery of the kingdom of God, whose seeds were found in the various covenants extended to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, and then fully enfleshed in Jesus so many millennia ago. As part of the choir, I am eager to a end Mass, to sing close to the altar, and to explore new songs that are also prayers. Each day, humming or prac cing bits of new songs, I unconsciously pray more and more in the music. These songs have given me an extra inner defense, comfor ng me and giving me hope during difficult mes. Some mes these tunes just pop out, and I sing when I'm feeling happy. Musical prayers have become a part of my life and are a gi I didn't have un l I joined the choir to learn new songs. It is a me to meet with others in quiet and peace away from the busyness and noise of the world. You are all most welcome! ________________________________________________________________________ What was Happening in the First Century? Localized conflicts with Jewish authori es caused the Apostles to spread outwards away from Jerusalem. A large Chris an community formed in Syrian An och and among those who went to that city, was St. Peter who became the first Bishop of An och. The word “bishop” comes from the Greek episcopus which means overseer. Around 53 AD, Peter appointed Evodius to be the second Bishop of An och, and Peter moved on to become Rome’s first Bishop. In 68 A.D. Evodius was followed by St. Igna us of An och who would face martyrdom a er holding his office for nearly 40 years. By the early 60s, both Peter and Paul were in Rome, Paul under house arrest a er being jailed in Caesarea and transferred to Rome when he appealed his case to Caesar, which was his right as a Roman ci zen. Unfortunately, the Caesar was Nero, who had li le use for Chris ans. The Chris an community in Rome a racted many people of the lower economic and educa onal classes, as these tend to be the people who most understand their dependence upon God. The elite in Rome made accusa ons against these Chris ans that seem odd to us today. They accused the Chris ans of being atheists who engaged in incest and cannibalism, and that they were poli cal enemies of Rome. The Chris ans were called atheists because they refused to worship the pagan gods. By this me, most Romans no longer actually believed in the pagan gods such as Jupiter, Hera, Minerva, Mercury, and dozens more, but they s ll par cipated in the public worship of these dei es by offering sacrifices and incense. It was more a sign of poli cal unity than it was of religious faith. Chris ans also refused to offer incense before the statue of Nero Caesar, who called himself a god, because this too violated their firm monotheism. However, Rome saw it as a treasonous refusal of patrio c duty. Within the community of believers, the terms of brother, sister, father, were used, leading outsiders to believe this indicated biological rela onships, not a spiritual ones. As some of these brothers and sisters were married, the Romans believed their unions be incestuous. And since it was known that Chris ans claimed to celebrate a sacrifice and consume the body and blood of their leader, those unfamiliar with the meaning of those words assumed it was a cannibalis c ritual. In 64 AD, Nero was obsessed with building a palace complex and circus in a poor area of Rome. In order to do this, the quarters of the poor who lived in that area would have to be demolished. Nero failed to receive the endorsement of his senators to go forward with this plan. Mysteriously one night, a fire broke out destroying everything in the area where Nero wished to build. Many believed that this was not an accident; but that Nero himself had started the fire in order to obtain the land. Nero needed a scapegoat, and so he blamed the already unpopular Chris ans. This resulted in a persecu on of the Church in Rome. These incidents were documented by the Roman historian Tacitus. Chris ans were arrested, and put to death in gruesome ways. Some were dipped in tar and set afire to be torches for circus’s night games. Others were dressed in the skins of animals and starving dogs would be set loose to kill and devour them, some were crucified, and others faced wild animals such as gers, leopards, and lions which were also kept in a near starva on condi on fran c for food. St. Peter also was put to death in Nero’s circus. St. Irenaeus writes that as Peter was crucified he requested to be placed upside down on the cross, as he was unworthy to die in the same manner as Christ. Around this same me, St. Paul was denied his appeal by Caesar and was put to death by beheading on the road outside the City of Rome. The basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls now stands at that site. And, so the history of the Church con nues . . . —James A. Everything is changing and something new is always in front of us to learn about. Our experiences are always different. Technology is at its highest level ever and we are seeing new things happen all the time. One of the blessings of our faith is the consistency we have in doctrine through the centuries. While non-doctrinal traditions can and do change, the basics of our Catholic Christian beliefs remain. It is a great comfort and security to Catholics to know that the faith handed down through the apostles is still ours today, although emphasis and methods of teaching the faith may differ with the needs of the people. Some people think that Catholicism should change its teachings in order to be more in sync with today’s culture; however throughout the ages the Church has always been countercultural and our beliefs rest on God’s Divine revelation in scripture and tradition, not in popular opinion or cultural trends. If you want to deepen your own faith life, I invite you to look into Cursillo. It will make changes in your life and in how you understand Catholicism and live your faith. Thousands of Catholics have gone through Cursillo and have come away excited and proud of their Catholic faith. This is your opportunity to look into Cursillo and discover a revitalization of your faith. Please contact Ron Accornero, St Norbert Parish Rep for Cursillo, with any questions and for an application form. Call today at (714) 396-7295.
