NORBERT CATHOLIC CHURCH | WWW.STNORBERTCHURCH.ORG 2 Stewardship Reflecting on God’s Word Twenty‐Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Of all the events and circumstances that draw people together, it would seem that marriage is the most universal and obvious manifestation of that longing to be one. Though some may sacrifice marriage for what they deem to be a greater good or need, and others may never find their heart’s way to that dream, all of us long to be touched by the magic of committed love. There is something woven into the warp and woof of our lives that passionately searches for it. More than anything, it is the ideal of marital love that reveals what we are meant to be—all of life and love so united to one another that there is nothing to divide, since there is no longer anything but pure oneness. Then we are no longer two simply because we are one, one flesh. That is what makes divorce such a sadness, such a personal and even communal tragedy—that it shatters the vision of what we are meant to be. That is also why it causes such pain, such a wrenching; for if marriage fails, might not then also God’s dream of who we shall be? That seems to be too unbearable even to dare consider. Into such fragile human becoming, then, comes the Lord Jesus, among the married and the divorced, among the sad and the joyful, among the lost and the hopeful, into what we are no matter what we are. He is the most profound and transforming revelation of that unity to which we are called simply because he unites and embodies both the human and the divine in such a way that it can never again be alienated. —Rev. Although the religious freedom made life easier for Christians, it did present a new challenge to the Church. Some lapsi who had renounced their faith during the persecutions, now wished to return to the church and not everyone was in agreement as to whether this should be permitted. These persons were considered traitors to the church, as they had not only denied their personal faith, but sometimes had also revealed the names of other Christians and places of worship resulting in arrests, suffering and death for others. Some bishops felt that such betrayal could not be forgiven by the church, and that these persons should not be reconciled. Other bishops believed that this stance was too harsh, and that reconciliation should be offered – but only once. If the apostasy was repeated, they could not appeal to be reconciled a second time. The Gospels and Tradition both teach that Christ gave his apostles (and their successors) the authority to forgive sins in his name. But the process by which that was applied has varied widely through the centuries. In the earliest church, this forgiveness was offered through the sacrament of baptism, with the belief that once baptized the Christian would never sin again. This premise did not work out well. So, sins committed after baptism were believed to be forgiven through Eucharist, prayer, works of mercy and giving of alms. But many bishops believed that for very serious and public sins, ones that damaged the trust and unity of the entire community, such as apostasy, murder and adultery, something more was needed to reconcile the sinner to the church, if such reconciliation was possible at all. Some believed that a person falling into one of these serious sins would need to be baptized again, but the majority of bishops agreed that baptism was a once in a lifetime event that could never be repeated. Certainly, baptism forgave all sin that preceded it, but only one time. Those culpable of grave sin, particularly apostasy, murder and adultery, needed some other means by which to be reconciled to the church and return to the sacraments. What developed from this dilemma was the practice of Canonical Penance. Most bishops decided that the grave sinner could be reconciled, but only with a great deal of effort to prove their repentance and intention. Such a penitent seeking reconciliation must present him/herself to the bishop, who would accept the person into the Order of Penitents. They were not immediately absolved or permitted to return to the sacraments, but they were again considered to be members of the Church in rather the same way a Catechumen was, prior to Baptism. These penitents could not enter a church building or participate in the Mass. They had to wait outside the church dressed in sackcloth, wear ashes on their faces, and ask for prayers of other Christians. During this time, the penitents must fast, abstain from meat, animal products, alcohol, entertainment, and intimate relationship with their spouse. The bishop would determine how long this period of penance should last, and sometimes it was several years. After completing the first phase of reconciliation, the bishop would relax some of the requirements of abstinence and fasting, and allow the penitent to enter the church and attend mass, but only if lying prostrate on the floor. Again, the length of this stage of penance was determined by the bishop. In the next step toward reconciliation, the penitent was permitted to kneel during the mass (at this time other members of the church stood through the entire liturgy.) Finally, after possibly many years of this canonical penance, the penitent would be absolved by the bishop during a Holy Thursday mass, reconciled to the church, and fully restored to the sacraments. This process of canonical penance was referred to by some of the early church fathers as the “second plank after shipwreck,” a phrase also used in the scholastic period in the theological discussions of sacraments, and which even appears in today’s Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1446). And, so, the history of the Church continues . . . —Padre Joseph J.
