For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil (2 Corinthians) Who are the secret heroes in your life? These are the people who quietly and dutifully give of themselves to the other - agape. My heroes are: my mother & father who opened their home to the extended family when they needed a place to "stay" indefinitely. Wanda, who cared for her husband Al for years at home after his debilitating stroke. My great-grandmother, Giuseppina, who fed the even poorer on St. Joseph's Day. The unknown soldier who went into battle protecting my liberty and is now suffering PTSD or an amputation. There is a fact of life that affects everyone and that is illness. It is at these times that heroism rises to the surface, often in the least expected. At one moment or another ordinary people are burdened with caring for their sick family members or friends. Either out of duty or love, a family member suspends his own life to care for the life of another. This is a true martyrdom. Unlike those who believe martyrdom to be the taking of lives for Allah, martyrdom in the Christian sense is giving one's life for the sake of another. You too must know one of these heroes or perhaps you haven't recognized that you yourself are a hero in the true sense of the word. You or someone you know has put his own desires, his own career, his own social life away to care for a sick relative, a disabled child or a spouse suffering Alzheimer's. As St. Paul said, "Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but (also) everyone for those of others" (Phil 2:3), and Jesus said, "There is no great love than to lay down one's life for a friend." The one place where heroism occurs most often is at home. It is at home that children learn compassion, that is, how to suffer with others, and not be self-centered. They become capable of helping the ill and of living fully each human experience. Let us always show children how to care for the sick, love the unlovable, and give of themselves by our own example of heroism in the midst of ordinary things. Who are your secret heroes? thex of the Church, I have these various ministries posted. Please take a look at them and see where you might want to get involved. Many in our English speaking community do great things like the Carnival which was a great success this year, the choir, and CCD, but what I am asking is that the rest of the community get involved. If we leave our church involvement to attendance on Sundays and sending kids to CCD, then our Church life will cease to be a center of our communal life and the next generation will see no need for community, Church, and faith in their everyday life. So let’s get ourselves and our family involved so that their faith in Christ, the faith they are baptized into does not became a distant memory but rather a part of their life. Christianity is not religion, not a philosophy, not an ethical code—it is a way of life, a culture. Peace, Fr. Paul Relevant Radio—AM 1430 The national Catholic Radio network, Relevant Radio, has begun broadcasting Catholic programming from within the Archdiocese of Newark. We encourage you to listen to WSNW - AM 1430, a terrific outlet for Catholic news, opinion and entertainment. Pax Christi, Fr.Paul On the Feast of Holy Trinity, I invited everyone downstairs for some coffee and bagels. I am happy that some were able to come down but saddened that not many more came to spend sometime to celebrate our patronal feast day. Beside the coffee and bagels and the great company, we also had a Ministry Fair inviting you to get involved more with the parish. As you know the demographics of Hackensack and so too the parish are changing. More than half of the parishioners today are from Spanish speaking nations. We also have a great influx of Filipinos, Islanders, and people from India. No longer is Holy Trinity Parish singularly European American, but very diverse not unlike the greater Catholic (universal) Church. The missionaries did some job! Our older “American” parishioners who contribute to the parish most generously with their time talent and treasure are retiring, passing on, or moving away. Though there is still a significant number of “American” or English speaking parishioners, their participation is not proportional. At my Pastoral Council meetings of 16 members, 10 have Spanish as their first language. I hope to balance this representation by involving more of our English speaking community, but first I need them to get involved. At the Ministry Fair we had several ministries and a few new ones that demand your participation. In the nar- Sanctity of Life Pope Francis said... “All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor, are masterpieces of God’s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect.” — Message to Catholics taking part in annual Day for Life in Britain and Ireland July 28, 2013 “Unfortunately, what is thrown away is not only food and dispensable objects, but often human beings themselves, who are discarded as ‘unnecessary.’ For example, it is frightful even to think there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day; children being used as soldiers, abused and killed in armed conflicts; and children being bought and sold in that terrible form of modern slavery which is human trafficking, which is a crime against humanity.” — Speech to diplomats Jan. 13, 2014 SPIRITUAL LIFE IN THE COMMUNITY LA VIDA ESPIRITUAL EN LA COMUNIDAD C ,P U Holy Trinity Prayer Group - charismatic prayer every Friday at 7:30 PM at 30 Maple Adoration - every first Friday from 12:30 to 10:00 PM Bible Class - Select Wednesdays from 7:30 till 8:30 PM, Convent Bible Class will meet on the following dates: June 17, 24 Special Noon Mass for Alcoholics A special mass and support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, NJ on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 12:00 noon. Summertime and the living is easy but not free from our responsibility as followers of Christ to help those in need. The hot, leisurely days of summer provide an excellent opportunity to get caught up on some of those tasks which we postponed during the demanding days of winter. Would you be willing to go through your closets to get rid of all those unwanted heavy winter clothes and shoes which served you so well during this blistering winter season? Please donate any unwanted clothing to the Catholic Charities bin located on the parking lot. Thank you for helping Catholic Charities continue its mission Pope Francis Blesses the Scouts Saturday, June 20, 8:45am-4:00pm The Archdiocesan Catechetical Office and the American Bible Society will bring together national and international Bible Scholars to share their knowledge with people who have an interest in learning more about the Bible. The theme of the Bible Summit this year is Hear the Word of God with Reverence. Proclaim it with Faith. If you register before June 10th, the day includes coffee for breakfast and a box lunch. For more information visit website www.nyfaithformation.org or call 646794-2692. Fr.
