09 AUGUST 2015  19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In our readings this week, we continue the Eucharistic meditation
from John’s gospel. Last week Jesus called his audience to be
open to the gift of faith that will enable them to appreciate the
Eucharistic mystery. In today’s Gospel, John 6:41-51, he explains
further what this faith implies. Understanding that this passage is a
meditative recollection of what Jesus had done for us, we are able to
share in the outlook of the community in which this gospel was written.
This passage echoes many of the themes that were fundamental to
the faith of that community. John’s gospel begins with a declaration
of faith in the Incarnation: “And the Word became flesh” (John 1:14).
This momentous truth is constantly reaffirmed in the writings of this
community. Jesus is confronted, in our passage, by the complaints of
those who find it hard to accept: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph?
Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have
come down from heaven’” (John 6:42)? The faith to which Jesus calls
us, however, is not an embarrassing burden. It is a blessing that
comes to us from the depths of the divine generosity and freedom –
we are drawn by the Father, setting out on a journey which leads to
eternal life in God.
The Father and the Son share in all things, and so he declares that
faith is also his gift, a gift that will be ours when we come to him – we
must live in his company as his first disciples did. For Christian faith,
Jesus is the revelation of the Father – he has truly come from God,
and has seen the Father – an echo of the memorable words of the
gospel’s opening: “No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God,
who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him” (John 1:18). Those who
live by the faith Jesus is offering share in the divine wisdom itself; they
hear the teaching of the Father and learn from it. Knowledge in the
Scriptures, and in the outlook of the community of John’s gospel, has
a rich and profound meaning; it is personal and life-giving, far more
than the gaining of information. Referring to the manna – symbol of
God’s caring for the people of the Exodus – Jesus reminds his listeners
that the time of foreshadowing has ended. The faith Jesus offers
recognizes that all the promises that sustained Israel’s faith are being
fulfilled: “I am the living bread come down from heaven” (John 6:51).
Jesus has prepared his listeners for his announcing of the Eucharistic
mystery. Through this mystery he will be nourishing bread for the
world, not in metaphor only, but in reality: “The bread that I shall give
is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:51).
With my prayers in Christ,
Fr. Patrick

09 AUGUST 2015  19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“He prayed for death saying:
‘This is enough, O LORD! Take my
life, for I am no better than my
fathers.’ " (1 Kings 19:4b)
I don’t know if I ever actually got
any sleep last night. I do know that
I am up way too early, although it is
nice and quiet. I have been fussing
over a little hiccup that came up
during the installation of our
replacement air conditioners. I have
been thinking a lot too about an
acquaintance of mine. I mentioned
Mit in this column a couple of
months ago when he stopped by to
announce to the staff that he was
engaged to be married. Mit used to
be a regular visitor until he moved
into a new group home across
town. I remember that he was
“dressed to the nines” and was so
excited. He could not stop talking
about how blessed he was.
Mit visited us again. It was
instantly obvious that he was hurting.
He explained that his marriage
plans were cancelled. Like so many
times before, your front desk staff
was extraordinary to watch and
listen to as they ministered to our
crestfallen guest. The only
consolation that I could offer was a
rosary - the same hope that I had
clung to when my heart was broken
for the first time many years ago.
The readings this weekend
speak of despair, hope and eternal
life. St. Paul admonishes us to “be
imitators of God, as beloved
children, and live in love.” We know
all too well that this is easy to say
and difficult to do, especially when
the world seems to be crashing in
around us! I am so grateful to be in
this community of believers who put
into practice what St. Paul teaches.
The problems that I face at the
moment seem so trivial compared
to a “broken heart” and the crosses
that so many others carry. I’m
planning to pray my rosary for Mit
and for you on my ride into work this
morning. Please join me if you can.
Deacon Steve
PS. Our collection two weekends
ago totaled $28,950. Last weekend

REFLECTION
Think about the most discouraged you’ve ever been. Did
you just want to give up? Sometimes discouragement is
just a bad day and we can try again tomorrow. But
sometimes it’s more serious. In the First Reading, the
prophet Elijah is in such a state of despair that he prays
for death. Instead, God sends angels with food to
strengthen him. Elijah recovers his strength and his
service to God continues. Though we may not see too
many angels these days, God does send help to us
when we are discouraged. Sometimes it’s in the form of
a friend or family member who knows us well enough to
know that we’re not OK. It might be a counselor or doctor
who sees what’s going on and gets us the care we need.
Sometimes we are the help that God sends to someone
else in need. If you are experiencing depression, having
thoughts of death, or feeling like you want to hurt
yourself, reach out! There are people all around you who
want things to be better for you and can help make that
happen!
JOURNALING QUESTIONS
Have you ever wanted to give up? What stopped you?
What things in your life do you tend to get the most
discouraged about? Are there effective ways you have
found to help handle those situations or feelings?
When have you been called to help someone in need?
What advice would you give to someone who was
feeling suicidal? Which adults in your life do you think
would be the most helpful if you or a friend needed
them? Was there ever a time when you felt God sent
you help when you needed it?

09 AUGUST 2015  19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
¿No
conocemos a su padre ya su madre? Entonces ¿cómo puede decir: "Yo he
Padre Patricio
