March 29, 2015 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA Page 2 My God, My God, Why have you abandoned me? By Cynthia Reyes In today’s responsorial psalm, we repeat the opening words of Jesus as he hung on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” (Ps 22:2) The crucified Christ hang’s in total submission to God and yet cries in agony, in utter isolation. His prayer to the Father becomes our prayer as we meditate upon his passion during this holy and reflective week. His humble act of love was becoming human. He lowered himself to become like us: human yet divine. How conflicting, what a contradiction that Jesus was Lord and Savior who walked and taught his followers of how they must live. He ruffled a few political feathers, he upset his mother a few times, and certainly, he upset the status quo of the Jewish traditions and the Roman authorities of his time. One could almost say he was a revolutionary of his time. He came for the entire world so that all humankind may come to know God—that God chose in Jesus to become one of us. Truly by this act of love, we must recognize, reverence, and emulate Jesus. We embrace both our earthiness of our humanity and the divine life given to us in Christ; willing to under take with Christ this passage through death to new life. Every year on this day, Palm Sunday of The Lord’s Passion, we enter into this passage through our beautiful ritual. May we continue this journey with Christ through Holy Week and enter with him into the glory on Easter Sunday. Dios Mío, Dios Mío, ¿Por qué me has abandonado?
