® WEEKEND EDITION San Antonio keeping pace with tech elites By Kristian Jaime [email protected] Recent census data has confirmed what many local tech professionals already know—San Antonio is booming and their industry is one of the reasons why. The Alamo City joined New York, Houston and Austin as cities that have not only seen a population boom, but also a professional renaissance in fields such as biotechnology, information technology and cybersecurity. With Texas boasting three of the top five cities in the nation with this unique distinction, it is more than just about the jobs that are coming to San Antonio; it is the employers finding a ready and willing workforce from which to draw. “When you look at the growth in the tech industry in general, the trends show we’re growing almost fifty percent (in that time). We’re going to be a player in the tech industry, particularly in the cybersecurity side of it,” said Mario Hernandez, president of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation. The moniker of “Military City USA” was earned by becoming the hub for military medicine at Fort Sam Houston and advances in cybersecurity via the partnership with the National Security Administration (NSA). While San Antonio can mark this as “brain-gain,” or its ability to retain millennials with college level education, it is a bigger feather in the cap of institutions like the University of Texas at San An Antonio (UTSA). Their academic curriculum in the area of cybersecurity and information technology has quickly made it a resource in the fight against cyber terrorism. “When you start from a great corporate base of state-of-the-art practices and the military presence, you have real strengths,” Hernandez continued. “Add to that the educational component at UTSA and over 100,000 college students across Bexar County, it’s a tremendous growth sector.” For David Stich, Accenture Federal Services director for the San Antonio delivery center, the name of the tech game is responsiveness. With many information technologies jobs making the move overseas in the recent history, employers are starting to get homesick. That has led to companies like Accenture Federal Services to cultivate a workforce closer to home. “Here in San Antonio, we’ve been cultivating a group of technologists that meet those technology needs. We started last year having these boot camps focused on job growth in testing and quality assurance,” Stich said. That precipitated partnerships with local universities and the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) to design cur- 7 de junio de 2015 WWW.LAPRENSASA.COM AÑO XXVI • NÚMERO 49 S.A. Mayoral race heads into final days Mayor Ivy Taylor and Former Sen. Leticia Van de Putte continue to discuss their policies and plans for San Antonio at public forums like the EDF session at Trinity University held on Monday night. (Photos, Lea Thompson) By Lea Thompson [email protected] The San Antonio mayoral race became a mess of ignored handshakes and accusations earlier this week, but the focus has shifted back to the candidates and issues in the the final days of the runoff election. After a disappointing 12 percent voter turnout in the first race, former Sen. Leticia Van de Putte and Interim Mayor Ivy Taylor hope to win more support before the polls close on June 13. La Prensa spoke with both candi- dates and their stances on public safety, LGBT progress and why voters should choose them as San Antonio’s next Mayor. Public safety “San Antonio has just grown so fast in the last few years. Right now we have over $1.2 billion in deferred payments for maintenance in our sidewalks and drainage, and the city has not kept up with basic infrastructure needs,” Van de Putte said. “The ones that are most important are the ones that deal in health and safety.” The former Senator promised that she would focus on improv- ing the intersections throughout the city, reporting loss of life. Van de Putte promised to push for at least 75 percent of the 2017 bond package to improve the city’s safety. “I encourage [voters] when we begin that package process in the fall to make their needs and their priorities known.” Mayor Taylor cited her SATomorrow initiative as the best way to approach safety and health improvements in the cities. “What we hear most of the time from folks is that they are interested in street maintenance and drainage projects, and want to see a more comprehensive sidewalk initiative,” Taylor said. Taylor said planning was essential to designating the 2017 bond, which would provide the city with $500 million, which would be partially utilized to improve and update city areas. LGBTQ community When asked about future initiatives to help protect San Antonio’s LGBTQ community, both candidates said they were in favor of implementing recently passed legislation to help protect individuals throughout the San Antonio, starting with city employees. Gaining the lead “I think San Antonio is looking for a strong leader, a strong mayor and city council, so that it runs efficiently, effectively and is transparent,” Van de Putte said. Van de Putte promised that she would bring back Uber and Lyft services to San Antonio, and that her time as Mayor would change the status quo. “That’s what I’ve done the last 24 years in the legislature, reaching across the aisle and making decisions, I will do that with the police and fire contract See Mayoral race on page 4-A Inaugural Women in Investment Management Conference encourages and inspires By Natalie Bobadilla [email protected] More than 200 investment professionals from across the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Africa gathered in the Alamo City earlier this week to take part in CFA Institute’s inaugural Women in Investment Management Conference. The two-day event focused on the importance of diversity in firms and encouraged career advancement as well as leadership roles in women. “Men and women think very different, which is a good thing,” Leah Bennett, CFA member and co-chief investment officer at South Texas Money Management, explained. “If you embrace diversity either on management teams, senior corporate boards or in investment teams, your returns end up being significantly better.” Esa negligencia no debe repetirse. No existe ningún consenso. Providing Hope for Alzheimer’s Patients and their Families During Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, we pay tribute and reaffirm our Lloyd Doggett commitment to the fight against Alzheimer’s. The impact of the disease is borne not just by the patient, but also by their families, who face the difficult task of finding and paying for the right level of care or providing it themselves. Late last year, Tino Duran gave a brave face to this fight and at his reception during the holiday season, I saw a flood of love and support for Tino and his family, all who have been touched by his generosity and enduring spirit. The courage of the entire Duran family and the community of support serves as a wonderful example for the many suffering from this dreadful disease, similar to that shown by famous country singer Glen Campbell in his upcoming documentary about his own battle, and by my former colleague in Congress, Dennis Moore from Kansas, who testified before a Congressional Committee about his experiences. All have done their part to raise awareness and funds to research for a cure. June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. I have seen the devastation of this disease firsthand and I have also visited with families with loved ones struggling with Alzheimer’s at the Frank Garrett Multi-Service Center in the heart of San Antonio’s Westside. I listened as they came forward with concerns about the lack of medical resources and research funding, delays in diagnosis, and the need for more support for caregivers. Though an estimated one in nine seniors has Alzheimer’s, about half of them don’t know it. Nearly everyone has been touched in some way by Alzheimer’s, and my family felt the toll that this unforgiving disease takes when my wife’s father suffered with it. That’s why, as a member of the Alzheimer’s Caucus, I have added my support again this Congress to the HOPE for Alzheimer’s Hope Act. This bill would provide Medicare coverage for a package of services, including clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and care planning to provide newlydiagnosed individuals and their caregivers’ information about treatment and support. It is simple. We need more funding for research to win the fight against Alzheimer’s. Even though Alzheimer’s is the most expensive disease in the U.S., costing more than cancer and heart disease, it receives only about one-tenth of the funding spent on cancer and about onefourth of the funding spent on cardiovascular disease research. Women in their 60s are about twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s over the rest of their lives as they are to develop breast cancer. For every $26,500 that Medicare and Medicaid are spending for caring for people with Alzheimer’s, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) spend just $100 on Alzheimer’s research. This is unacceptable and I will continue working to secure more funding for the fight against Alzheimer’s. In 2014, Medicare and Medicaid spent approximately $150 billion on Alzheimer’s care alone. This cost accounted for 20 percent of the overall Medicare spending in 2014. That is why I urged the President and requested increased funding for the National Institutes of Health to continue their Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies Initiative— a program aimed at advancing our understanding and treatments of different neurological diseases, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Over the past decade, the federal government’s contributions to NIH funding have failed to keep up with the rate of inflation. Irresponsible budget cuts enacted during sequestration only compounded the problem. We can do better. I am committed to promoting quality healthcare and investing in research so that families like Tino’s will not have to suffer in the future. Together, we can bring greater hope of conquering Alzheimer’s. Just a Thought: It’s Graduation time Well it is that time of the year for high school and university students in San Antonio to get ready Steve Walker to walk the stage for graduation ceremonies. Today, for example, Jefferson and Lanier High Schools are hosting their ceremonies back-to-back at the Alamodome. Northside ISD will host five high school graduations Monday through Friday this coming week. Students from all over the metro area are gearing up for the parties- celebrations of long anticipated completions of at least a four year marathon of classes that culminates in a degree or diploma. Many graduating high school students who can’t afford the sticker value of a college education are frantically looking for scholarships and other avenues to pay for their degrees. Many parents are doing their best to help their kids achieve that goal with financial help by working two jobs and taking out loans. For many families in San Antonio, this will be the first generation to obtain a college degree. The journey actually begins when a student graduates from middle school. This puts them on the path to achieve a higher education and sets the tone for what they may choose for their lifelong career. As high school prepares them with basic life skills to allow them to compete in the workforce, it all comes to fruition their senior year when they begin the journey of choosing whether to go to college or not and which college or tech school to attend to complete their career choices. For many, the hardship of the financial burden is often so overwhelming to the point of discouragement that they either give up or indefinitely postpone their dreams of a better life and financial security. The students of Bexar County live in a somewhat more positive environment than most. Our community values edu- cation and therefore works diligently to assist families in being able to send their children forward in their pursuit of higher education. As a former teacher at Fox Tech, Memorial and McCollum high schools, I know that to be true. This support comes in the form of scholarships and financial assistance from the many individuals and organizations and foundations within Bexar County. These groups work year round raising funds to be able to award deserving students the opportunity to make a better life for themselves and their families. It also encourages those students who succeed in obtaining their educational goals to return to their community and become productive citizens who pay it forward. One of the many educational organizations whose sole purpose is to ensure that local students are given the chance to receive a scholarship to pursue their education is the La Prensa Education Foundation spearheaded by Millie Duran. Millie, wife of La Prensa Publisher Tino Duran, has successfully raised well over two and a half million dollars in scholarship money over the years. I was privileged to cover this year’s fundraiser gala once again, as I have done numerous times in the past. As an active member of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ), I have also been involved in a number of fundraising events for aspiring young journalists. In fact in July, we will host our annual SAAHJ Gala Ceremony that will award scholarships to worthy students, many from the Hispanic community. There are many other organizations, foundations and individuals who feel strongly about ensuring that the educational future will be bright for not only students, but for the entire community. This is a win-win for everyone in Bexar County. As always, what I write is “Just a Thought.” Steve Walker is a Vietnam Veteran, former journalist and Justice of the Peace. Fortunately, Carla Harris, managing director and vice chairman of global wealth management at Morgan Stanley, was on hand to share her strategies for thriving in the workplace. The most important lesson, she said, is that perception is the copilot to reality. “How people perceive you will directly impact how they deal with you,” Harris explained. “The reality of how smart you work and how hard you work has something to do with the success equation, but a very big component of your success equation is the perception that the market place has about you.” She encouraged attendees to think of three adjectives that are consistent with whom they are and three adjectives valued by their organizations. “Where they intersect is how you must behave consistently,” she explained. “If you want to train people to think about you in a certain way, it is simply consistent behavior. Have consistent be- havior around those three adjectives. Use this language in your environment, particularly when you are talking about yourself.” Harris also encouraged women to be fearless, authentic, to be intentional about relationships and to under promise and over deliver. “Success does not just happen,” she added. “There is only one person responsible for you career and that is you.” Reevaluating the conference, the attendance, the sponsorship, and the involvement, Bennett said it was all far ahead of CFA’s expectations and they certainly plan to host a second annual Women in Investment Management Conference. By Kristian Jaime [email protected] Surrounded by fellow Texans, former Governor Rick Perry did what everyone expected he would—announce his candidacy for the White House in 2016. With a speech taking aim at the Obama administration, Perry put his failed 2012 bid for the presidency behind him with his latest announcement in Addison, Texas. “I know that America has experienced great change. But what it means to be an American has never changed. We are the only nation in the world founded on the power of an idea,” said Perry. While evoking memories of his youth in front of a cheering public, the speculation surrounding months of trips to battleground states like New Hampshire were crystallized as 65 year-old Perry extolled conservative tenets. “Our rights come from God, not from government. Our people are not subjects of the government, but instead, our government is subject to the people. It has always been the case that there has been a social compact between one generation and the next,” Perry continued. Railing against policies he deemed divisive to the American spirit, he painted President Obama as a “divider” separating the modern electorate. While the former Governor boasted about his experience running a Texas economy that is among the largest in country, his recent unveiling of a campaign website also boasts a hard line on hot-button issues such as immigration, veterans affairs, education and gun control. While some have argued that his bid for the White House has already been in full steam for some time, the recent formal announcement comes when the Republican field now includes a gaggle of candidates all vying for the title of the “real” conservative choice. “Six years into this so-called recovery, and our economy is barely growing, our economic slowdown is not inevitable. It just happens to be the direct result of bad economic policy,” Perry argued. Citing the Obama administration as “an era of failed leadership,” Perry also noted the lapses in international affairs including the rise of the Islamic State (IS) and investigations into the White House dealings in Benghazi. With campaign stops already slated and the Republican primary election already underway, it is difficult to see if two times is the charm for Perry. Por Humberto Caspa Former Governor Rick Perry announced his second bid for the White House recently in Addison, Texas. (Courtesy photo) During his 2012 Presidential campaign, the conservative stalwart did well in Republican strongholds but waivered in undecided and liberal states. Such results, along with notable stumbles in debates essentially doomed Perry. “The reason I’m running for president is because I know our country’s best days are ahead. There is nothing wrong in America today that a change of leadership will not make happen,” vowed Perry. As the field of Republican challengers grows, so will the conservative rhetoric and stump speeches. As it shrinks back down to the last man standing, Perry hopes that it is not history repeating. Finalmente tenemos a Marco Rubio. When children other interventions have failed. It is designed for children who have experienced relationship-based traumas such as abuse, maltreatment, or neglect. Through the use of the interventions, parents, caregivers, and teachers are better able to understand where the children from “hard places” are coming from and intervene appropriately. TBRI® begins with helping caregivers understand what trauma does to the brain and how children are in a chronic state of “stress” that damages their ability to self-regulate and calm themselves down when they are upset. When something does not go their way or is unexpected, these children are biologically unable to problem solve or calm down and instead are hardwired to react as if they are in survival mode. This is often displayed as verbal and physical aggression. TBRI® explains to foster parents and staff that there is hope in healing these issues with proper intervention and care giving. By utilizing Connection Principles that include healthy touch, playful engagement, and attunement, foster parents and staff can begin the road to healing and helping children learn what a positive, safe, and healthy attachment can feel like. In addition, foster parents and staff learn about their own attachment styles and parenting styles and how they can impact the children directly. Foster parents and staff also learn how all children who have experienced trauma have sensory needs and what techniques can be used to help the children learn to self-regulate or calm themselves down when they are in an anxious situation. Since the implementation 18 months ago, our foster parents and staff have felt better equipped to handle the issues that our children experience on a daily basis. From new foster parents and staff to those who have been caring for traumatized children for more than five years, all have stated that the training has helped them tremendously in the work they do. As a result, those caregivers have improved services and have helped create stronger attachments for our children. TBRI® has given our children from “hard places” hope for continued healing and a chance for success in their futures. Whatever those behaviors, try to identify the cause, a possible solution, and try not to take it personally. Bold behavior • The person may forget that he/she is married and begin to flirt or make inappropriate advances toward others. • If the person is engaging in overt behavior, try to redirect him or her. • Avoid laughing or getting angry at the person. Inappropriate undressing • Person may take his/her clothes off at inappropriate times and in unusual settings. • A person may start to remove clothing simply because it is too tight or uncomfortable. - Check clothing to see if you can make adjustments to the fit (e.g., adjustments to buttons, zippers and straps). • If person has removed a blouse or shirt, calmly put a coat or sweater over his or her shoulders. • Consider providing clothing that is difficult for the person to remove without assistance. Shoplifting • Person may not understand or remember that merchandise must be paid for. • He/she may casually walk out of the store without paying, unaware of any wrongdoing. • Have person carry a walletsize card that states that he/she is memory-impaired. • This may prevent person from feeling embarrassed when store security confronts him or her. • If you are with person, take security personnel aside and explain that the he or she has dementia. Paranoia • The person may become easily confused, leading to jealousy and suspicion; e.g., a man may think that his wife has a boyfriend if he sees her with their son. • A person may also misinterpret an unfamiliar face as someone who is a thief. • If person makes accusations or becomes extremely suspicious, don’t attempt to convince the person that he or she is wrong. • Apologize for upsetting the person if appropriate. • Provide reassurance with words or touch if that typically helps. • Try to distract person with another activity. Caregiver intervention 1. Detect and connect • Try to join the person’s reality rather than trying to get the person to join yours. • Keep respect for the person as an adult in mind. • Let the person know that you understand that he or she is upset and that you want to help. • Attempt to discover what may be triggering behavior by exploring who was involved when the behavior began, what took place and where, when the behavior started, and how the event played out 2. Address physical needs first • Explore whether the person is experiencing pain, and make attempts to resolve it safely. • Check with the person’s doctor to determine whether medication or physical conditions may be causing the behavior, especially if it occurred suddenly. • Make any needed changes to the person’s environment to help him or her feel more comfortable. 3. Then address emotional needs • The behavior may be an expression of emotional need, including feeling lonely, bored, or over- or under-stimulated. • Approach the person gently and provide reassurance. • Redirect the person as needed. 4. Reassess and plan for the next time • If the behavior took place once, it may well occur again. • Plan for escalation of the behavior in the future, and make plans to get additional support and resources as needed. • Remember that you cannot eliminate all challenging behaviors, but continue building your resources and attempting new interventions. • Get support for yourself as a caregiver. So we have a large pool of willing donors, but we only draw so much from them,” Davila continued. As World Blood Donor Day approaches, the compendium of services offered by BioBridge includes: blood resource management, cellular therapy, donated umbilical cord blood and human tissue as well as testing of blood, plasma and tissue products for clients in the United States and worldwide. Many people believe that a blood transfusion is a planned procedure, but rarely is that the case. This mindset is something the STBTC is working to change. “The trend right now is needing that universal blood donation, which is type O negative. This is a call to action with that blood type to come in and constantly give. We want to increase that pool of people we call with that blood type as well,” Davila explained. For Krystal Sanchez, even being an avid donor did not prepare her for the day she would become a recipient. Following an emergency cesarean section, Sanchez suffered from severe blood loss and joined countless others who were part of the 21 million transfusions that take place annually. “I never thought I would become a patient who would need a blood transfusion. It was a blessing, since I got to see first-hand how important it is to donate. You never know when you or someone you know will need blood,” Sanchez said. The World Health Organization (WHO) sponsored day serves also as a token of gratitude for those who do donate regularly. Sanchez and those like her know all too well that a donation is more than a good deed, but a chance at life itself. On June 14, San Antonio joins the world in rolling up their sleeves for a good cause—World Blood Donor Day. With San Antonio as the seventh most populous city in the United States, the demand for blood, plasma and platelet donations is only growing exponentially. With the summer months marking one of the busiest times for the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center (STBTC), World Blood Donor Day is as much a call to action as it is a celebration of giving. “There is a constant need for blood donations throughout South Texas,” said Carmen Davila, vice president of Corporate Communications for BioBridge Global. “We cover 43 counties, so it’s a daily, constant managing of resources of where blood units are going and working with hospitals to identify what they need.” Through its seven donation locations and its mobile units that cross the city, keeping up with the demand of the 67 hospitals they serve is still a challenge. With fewer individuals who donate, comes even more strain on resources. The STBTC, a non-profit organization that is a subsidiary of BioBridge Global along with QualTex Laboratories and GenCure, not only works with hospitals, but also with San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and even the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The NHL Stanley Cup series is here involving two great teams. For the Chicago Blackhawks, this is the opportunity to win their third Stanley Cup within six years. The last team to accomplish that feat was the Detroit Red Wings. The Blackhawks’ opponent is the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning has not won a Stanley Cup since 2004. Though experts have predicted that Tampa Bay will be the favorites to win the series, the real favorites to win are the Chicago Blackhawks. Although the Lightning is coming off a strong Eastern Conference win against hockey powerhouse New York Rangers, it’s going to be a difficult task to repeat that same outcome. But the Lightning is not in the Stanley Cup final for no reason, there is more to them than meets the eye. Tampa Bay has proven to the hockey community that we should not count them out. With their speed and also being led by center Stephen Stamkos, their offense has enough poise to get past the Blackhawks veteran defense. Also, the Lightning’s goalie Ben Bishop has proved himself to be a top tier goalie in the NHL. The Blackhawks are coming off a game seven victory against a strong Anaheim Ducks team. They showed up strong to that game and won 5-2. For a game thought to be a nail biter, it turned out to actually be a showcase to prove why they deserve to be in the Stanley Cup finals. The Blackhawks are well-balanced with veteran leadership and a majority of the same team that won their past two cups. They are also a team that never gives up, as they have magically come away with close victories throughout the playoffs. With that experience, and being led by Captains Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, and Patrick Sharp, the Blackhawks are the team to beat. Having played one game in the series so far, the Lighting showed strong plays as they led the game 1-0 for a majority of the game. But the Blackhawks did their thing and late in the third period, they scored two goals in a matter of a few minutes. They were able to hold the lead and take game one in Tampa Bay. Saturday will be game two, and after a game one victory, the Blackhawks look to continue the momentum and if they get behind, they’ll have an answer. Tampa Bay needs to come out strong. For a game two victory on their home ice, the Lightning need to outscore the Blackhawks and play the best defense of their life. Game two and the rest of this series will definitely be exciting and make for a well-matched Stanley cup final. As for my friend Matt, go Hawks! The San Antonio Stars X Games The San Antonio Stars will host their first home game of the season next Sunday, June 14 at the Freeman Coliseum. The Stars made well-needed improvements on defense in the off season when they drafted Dearica Hamby. Hamby is Wake Forest’s all-time leader in points and rebounds. Remember the last time a San Antonio probasketball team drafted a Demon Deacon in the first round? Good things happened. In the summer of 1995, TLC was chasing waterfalls and dominating the Billboard charts. Meanwhile, the birth of a new multi-sporting event was displayed on June 24 - the Extreme Games. The name would change the following year to the “X Games” and prompted the creation of the Winter X Games in 1997. The twentieth anniversary of the X Games has recently wrapped today in Austin, TX. Hamilton a spectator in Rangers line-up By Kristian Jaime [email protected] When Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton returned to his former club, he said he needed baseball. Now he will have to wait for four weeks. With just seven games into his latest stint with Texas, his strained left hamstring muscle has become the reason to panic for some and to be patient for others. Upon his acquisition from the Anaheim Angels on April 27, his place in the line-up gave manager, Jeff Banister, hope that a run was in the works for the team that was six and half games out of the top spot in the American League West. “You go by what the doctor says and you set a time frame. If you are doing better then you get back quicker and that’s great. But you look at that as the ultimate goal. Don’t rush back and do something stupid,” said Hamilton. Ranger outfielder Josh Hamilton finds himself on the disabled list once again for three to four weeks with a strained left hamstring muscle. (Photo/Courtesy) This is far from the first time the all-star has had to deal with extended stay on the disabled list as he recently suffered a groin injury and spent three months recovering from a shoulder injury. The Rangers are currently on the hook for an estimated $6 million following some wrangling that left the Angels taking on $65 million. His departure to Anaheim was courtesy of a monumental fiveyear, $125 million payday. Yet now back home in Texas, Hamilton has more important issues with which to deal. Concerns about a very public battle with addiction and spats with Angels’ management have left some wondering if his return to the Lone Star State was wise. The 34 year-old outfielder did his best to quiet his critics with a breakout game against the Boston Red Sox with a walk-off double to seal a 4-3 win. “When I got traded at the start of the season, guys were playing good when I got here. And we started having fun. It’s frustrating and there’s nothing I can do about it, all I can do is get better,” Hamilton continued. As for Banister, the question now becomes how to fill the hole on the field and in the hitting order. “I feel bad for Josh. We had a line-up before he got here, so we’ll continue to use that line-up,” Banister said. Now comes the 21 year-old third baseman Joey Gallo and his upper deck shot in the 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. That alone makes a highlight reel, but add on that he went 3-4 with double and four RBIs in the same series. While a sweep of the Chicago White Sox series was not in the cards, it did give many hope that Hamilton’s absence was bearable. “You saw what happened when (Gallo) gets a mistake over the plate and he drives it a long ways. He’s hot monster power and if you make a mistake, he has the opportunity to make you pay,” Banister continued. As Hamilton and Rangers mount a run through the marathon Major League Baseball (MLB) season, the key will be longevity. “I don’t feel like I have anything to prove, not to anybody else. The fact that I haven’t been the player I wanted to be the past two years only fuels the fire that I want to be that player,” Hamilton said. Time will tell if that will happen, but for now as with any injury, fans and players can only wait. The San Antonio Scorpions earned a point in the standings in a 1-1 draw with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at Toyota Field in front of 6,396 fans. The Alamo City boys started off the match on the front foot and after failing to capitalize on a series of corner kicks starting in the 12th minute, they found their opener from an unlikely source in the 21st. Rafael Castillo brought the ball up the right side of the pitch and sent an early cross towards the Ft. Lauderdale goal from about 35 yards away. Striker Omar Cummings got onto the end of the cross and flicked it towards the center of the box as Strikers keeper Lionel Brown began to rush off his line. The Scorpions midfielder Joseph Nane beat him to the ball and deftly flicked it over Brown’s head where it softly fell into the goal. The Scorpions looked to be headed into the half with a lead, but a late flurry by the visitors eventually produced the equalizer. In the 41’, FTL attacking midfielder Dani Sanchez broke in on San Antonio goalie Daryl Sattler and took a quick shot from about 12 yards away, but Sattler’s reactions were quick as he got all of his left hand onto the ball to push it wide of the post. Just three minutes later, Ft. Lauderdale again got behind the Scorpions’ line with James Marcelin breaking into the box on the right side. As Sattler converged, Marcelin slid the ball across to the left side just outside the 6-yard-box and found Stefano Pinho, who easily finished into the open goal to tie the match 1-1. Though neither side found a winner in the second half, the match turned into an open, entertaining affair with chances for both teams. The best chance for the visitors came in the 68’ when Léo Moura stepped up to take a 21-yard free kick. The Brazilian went up and over the Scorpions’ wall and just over the crossbar as The Spurs Silver Dancers will host prep classes with sessions available in the Alamo City and San Marcos, Texas. In addition to their night performances, they are active members of the community, making appearances and attending events throughout the year, as well as leading Jr. Silver Dancer clinics throughout South Texas. (Courtesy photo) By Jordan McMorrough Today’s Catholic San Toribio Romo is a priest and martyr of the church. He is called upon by many in the church as a patron saint of those who immigrate to a different country. Archbishop Gustavo GarciaSiller, MSpS, celebrated a Mass for the beloved saint’s feast day on May 21 at San Fernando Cathedral. “San Toribio was known to have a great devotion to the Eucharist, asking the Lord in prayer to never let a day of his life pass without receiving him in communion. He knew well the prayer Jesus had made, that Jesus may be in us, so that we may be in him, and through him, be with the Father and the Holy Spirit. That unity, that communion, was for justice, but not justice without love and mercy. “How can we turn our backs on them? How do we maintain our unity with our brothers and sisters in prison, in jail, or in detention centers? How do you maintain that unity in your own life?” he asked. The Missionary of the Holy Spirit then urged listeners to remember the words of Jesus in his parable of the sheep and the goats, when he praised those blessed ones saying, “I was in prison and you visited me” (Matthew 25). Archbishop Gustavo talked of his heart for those immigrant families who are in detention centers. “We pray for them especially today on this feast of their patron. I ask God to help us soften and open our hearts, to see these families as families in need, not as dangers to our society or simply as faceless law-breakers,” he stressed. “They are our sisters and brothers, and we should desire to fulfill the prayer of Jesus as fully as we can. They should be as close to us in our heart as Jesus is. That is what our Lord commands; that is what he prayed.” The archbishop closed by emphasizing that none of us is greater than our Lord, but all of us are called to open our hearts like his. “May San Toribio help us with his prayers, calling us in this Mass and always to greater communion with God and with each other,” he concluded. “Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of all people and our mother, mother of the immigrant and the imprisoned, help us with her grace and prayers to be people who desire the great unity of God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” so important to this great saint,” said Archbishop Gustavo in his homily. He continued, “But still the fact remains, we are not united. Even in our parishes, we are divided. We allow ourselves to worry and to fight about small things. We allow ourselves to be divided.” The archbishop expressed his sadness that Christians are also guilty of ignoring or shunning some members of our society. “Often we ignore the plight of our brothers and sisters who are imprisoned and detained. We excuse ourselves saying that they have done bad things and are receiving the proper punishment for their crimes,” he said. “But regardless of the law and what they have done or not done, they are our brothers and sisters in Christ.” Catholic Charities keeps senior citizens cool By Jose Arredondo Catholic Charities Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. kicks off the annual Project Cool this weekend. This year they will collaborate with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the City of San Antonio, United Way and the San Antonio Fire Department. The press conference was held on June 5 at the Guadalupe Community Center and many influential figures were in attendance; Fire Chief Charles Hood as well as City Councilman Alan E. Warrick appeared. Project Cool came about the same time Tim Duncan arrived in San Antonio, in 1997. This summer marked its 19th anniversary as they continue to attack the same issue, heat in the city. According to Currentresults. com, San Antonio is the eighth hottest city in the United States. On average, San Antonio’s temperature rises above 99 degrees eight days a year. Help senior citizens stay cool this summer. (Courtesy photo) There are several senior citizens who don’t have air conditioning in their homes and the ones who do, have a fear of paying too much on their utility bills because of fixed incomes. According to Healthresearchfunding.org, 31 percent of the deaths from heat exhaustion symptoms were attributed to exposure to excessive natural heat. In contrast, the project will collect brand new donated fans for the Senior Citizens and individuals with disabilities. “If there any individuals who want to donate a brand new fan, we would greatly appreciate it,” Executive Director Gladys Gonzalez said. Last year the project collected 5,000 fans. “We will also accept monetary donations, and those can be accepted through our Catholic Charities website,” Gonzalez said. “Anything can assist this project.” Gonzalez encourages San Antonio citizens to support this cause. The project will regulate throughout the summer and conclude in August. There will be drop-off sites at local fire stations as well as the Guadalupe Community Center. For more information on Project Cool, visit www.ccaosa. org or call the Guadalupe Community Center at 210-226-6178. “Dame entendimiento para seguir tus preceptos, pues quiero meditar en tus maravillas” Salmo 119:27 CHURCH DIRECTORY EL SENDERO ASSEMBLY OF GOD 5400 Daughty @ Evers Just inside Loop 410, 680-0111 Raúl C. The kickoff will be a community-wide block party at SA Youth’s Poplar Street location at 1215 West Poplar Street from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, June 8. The event will help connect more area kids and teens to health and nutrition resources by raising awareness about the Summer Food Service Program; highlight the fitness, nutrition, and education programs of SA Youth; and give the community more insight into the work of the Texas Hunger Initiative. Prior to lunch, kids will enjoy outdoor activities including an inflated bounce house, carnival games and fun on the playground. Lunch will be served in the cafeteria, followed by an exercise done by SA Youth’s new health/nutrition mascot Super Fitty. After this, there will be hour-long lessons in origami, math, English, and science, demonstrating key summer educational programming offered by SA Youth. However, only about 10 percent of children in San Antonio who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch during the school year participated in the free Summer Meals program last year. The kickoff event at SA Youth will help raise public awareness about the summer meals program. It will also highlight the strong local leadership of SA Youth and the Texas Hunger Initiative. Although SA Youth’s programs are only open to students from cer- tain schools around their centers, they are nonetheless playing an important role in ending childhood hunger in San Antonio. Serving as a major sponsor of summer meals in San Antonio, SA Youth’s programs attract more than 100 children per day at each of their 36 sites around the city. Their model serves as an example of what great summer nutrition programs can look like in San Antonio. Summertime should be a stressfree time for parents and kids, full of food, friends and fun. Free Summer Meals can help. Families can visit www.summerfood.org, call 211, or text FOODTX to 877-877 to find the nearest meal site. 5-B June marks Pride Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the LGBTI communities throughout the country. This month, the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) partners with local organizations like the San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce and publications like “Out In SA” to celebrate the resources and rights of the local community. When the SAPL developed Pride Month in 2009, the city didn’t have many programs or celebrations for the LGBTI community. Joel Bangilan, the Coordinator for Branch Services noted that the library’s recognition of the LGBTI community as a vital and vibrant part of San Antonio inspired them to take a more active role in providing accurate and reliable information for the public. “When this began it was a climate where people were just coming out,” Bangilan said. “We realized that people might not know how to access reliable information, and we wanted to provide that in a respectful yet informal way.” The LGBTI community has a rich cultural and social history, but it remained largely undocumented until major organizations and celebrities recently began sharing their stories with the public. SAPL has partnered with PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays) to help individuals tell their own stories, and learn what to do after they come out to the community. The library is also working with the San Antonio LGBT Chamber of Commerce to provide resources and events that address the potential challenges of coming out in the workplace as a gay or transgender individual. “We’re creating an inclusive environment,” said Robert Salcido, the Field Director for Equality Texas. “It’s not just the LGBTI community, but the allied community as well. It’s amazing to see people connect through music, art and film to what’s happening in the entire community itself.” Pride Month events run until the end of June, but the library invites the public to learn more about LGBTI issues and resources year-round at local branches or online at http://guides.mysapl. org/pride. Visitors can call 210207-2500 or visit mysapl.org to learn more about the free events at participating branch locations during Pride Month. VIA launches online survey to support vision 2040 By Lorraine Pulido, Ph.D. VIA Metropolitan Transit has launched an interactive, online survey in support of “Vision 2040,” a planning process to update the agency’s Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan. The survey is an engagement tool that will provide VIA with valuable insight into how citizens in the greater San Antonio region view public transportation, what their transportation priorities are, and what enhancements they would like to see for the future. The survey is located at www.vision2040survey.com, and it will be active through July 4. “Vision 2040 is a community-driven process with many opportunities for members of the public to provide us with input and suggestions,” said VIA President/CEO Jeff Arndt. “This online survey is a great way for people to get involved in planning the future, and we are promoting it with a public outreach effort that includes social media, online content, and many community events.” When Vision 2040 is completed in the fall of 2016, it will serve as a guide for public transportation for the region and assist decision makers and transportation professionals in planning for the region’s growing population over the next 25 years. Vision 2040 will identify public transportation options that can enhance mobility and the overall quality of life for current and future residents of the region. More information on Vision 2040 can be found at www. viavision2040.com. The survey materials are also available in Spanish at this site. VIA Metropolitan Transit provides public transportation services to 13 cities in the San Antonio area and the unincorporated areas of Bexar County. VIA operates seven days a week on 90 routes, and last year, VIA provided 44 million rides across the region. “A mí El Quijote me encanta”, subraya Stavans. Get your Texas On at the Mamma Mia! returns to S.A. Texas Folklife Festival By Natalie Bobadilla [email protected] By Keanna Whisenhunt The 44th Annual Texas Folklife Festival is making its way back to San Antonio next weekend, as Texas’ largest cultural celebration. The two-day event showcases Texas culture through music, food, dance, and art. Modeled after the original Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C., the festival held here in San Antonio was founded by O.T. Baker, who wanted to create a near replica of the Smithsonian event, while displaying authentic Texan culture. James Benavides, Senior Communications Specialist at the University of Texas at San Antonio said, “It is an expression of Texas… our heritage… it demonstrates our culture as Texans.” This year’s festival will kick off at the Institute of Texan Culture on Saturday, June 13 at 11 a.m. and will end at 11 p.m. The festivities will continue Sunday, June 14 at noon and will come to a close at 7 p.m. For the approximated 40,000 spectators that will attend the Texas Folklife Festival, there will be several new exhibits to discover, including a Kid’s Cultural Corner, and performances by Zorya, a Ukrainian dance ensemble. The members of Zorya travel from Dallas every two years to perform at the Texas Folklife Festival. For the Ukrainian Ensemble, the Texas Folklife Festival is not just a place to perform, but rather a grand expression of its dance inspiration. One thing spectators will not want to miss at the Texas Folklife Festival is the Grape Harbor, a stage garnished in grape vines where spectators can enjoy per- June 13 - 14, come join us at the Texas Folklife Festival. You can feel the love these people have of the craft… it’s in every note and every song.” Folklife is the focal point of the festival’s events. “The Texas Folklife Festival is a combination of our cultural traditions,” Benavides says. It unites the many diverse cultures that make up true Texan folk life. It’s a cultivation of people, places, history, diversity, art, and food that make our heritage. This year’s festival will continue to engage and educate attendees through traditional showcases and performances by artisans, musicians, dancers, storytellers, and more. More than 40 cultural groups will take part in bringing Texas heritage to life. The theme of this year’s festival is “Get Your Texas On,” which allows you to “embrace your heritage and what the culture of Texas means to you,” says Benavides. One of the most successful musicals of all time is headed to the Alamo City for eight unforgettable performances. Mamma Mia! will transform the Majestic Theatre into a sunny Greek Island as it follows the story of a single mother, Donna, who is throwing a wedding for her daughter, Sophie. The bride’s idea of a perfect wedding includes her father walking her down the aisle, thus, her quest to find her father begins. As a part of her search and unbeknownst to her mother, Sophie sends wedding invitations to three men from her mother’s past. The trio arrives on the eve of the wedding, but the journey is far from over. The production is not only relatable to single parents, but also to those who love catchy tunes and cheery dance moves. Songs of the Swedish pop group ABBA are interlaced throughout the storyline and they’re sure to make audience members want get up and dance along with the performers. If anyone understands the integral role of the upbeat dance routines in the production, it’s Dance Captain Danny Lopez. The Connecticut native with roots in Puerto Rico took some time to catch his breath and spoke with La Prensa about his life as a dance captain and as a swing. In Broadway lingo, a swing is a fill-in dancer. So what exactly does a dance captain do? “The dance captain is in charge of maintaining the choreography throughout the show while on the road since the choreographer is not with us and can’t make it out that often,” Lopez explained. “I am in charge of making sure that everyone is doing what they’re supposed to be doing and making sure that the integrity and the intention behind the movement are still there.” Danny Lopez is the dance captain and one of the swings for the touring production of Mamma Mia! (Courtesy photo) In addition to knowing every dance within the show, as a swing, Lopez also has to be ready to step into multiple roles at a moment’s notice in case one of the dancers is injured. When he joined the production two years ago, that was his only role, however, when the time came to renew the contracts, he was also offered the position of dance captain. “I had never been dance captain for such a big production before so I was definitely a little bit nervous and a little bit hesitant, but I’m so grateful and I’m so happy that I stepped up and took the opportunity,” Lopez said. He made his debut as Dance Captain last August and the same energy and enthusiasm is still there. “For me, this dancing itself is just fun, you get on the stage and you just let it all out and you just have a good time,” Lopez told La Prensa. “You have so much energy and you see the faces light up in the crowd and they’re dancing with you in the aisle and it just makes you feel great.” His ultimate goal is to land a part in Broadway, but his high school self would have never stepped out on a stage. “I used to be so shy, I never wanted to be in front of a big group of people,” Lopez recalled. Fate took its course when he accompanied his cousin to theatre rehearsals his senior year of high school. One of the actors dropped out and they asked Lopez if he could step in for a little bit. They ended up offering him the role and placed him in several dance numbers. “That’s when I realized that I actually had movement and was good with choreography and ever since then I kind of started taking classes in New York City when I could,” Lopez said. In the last 15 years, he has performed in several regional theatres across the country. As for his future, he recently signed his contract as dance captain for one more year. “After that I don’t know what the world has in store for me,” Lopez said. “I’m not sure if I will go back to New York and try to get something in New York City, maybe try and stay on the road, but right now I’m just kind of living my life in the moment as it is, and being grateful and enjoying everything that I have right now.” The touring production will be in San Antonio June 9 – 14. Tickets are available by calling Ticketmaster at (800) 982 – 2787, at all Ticketmaster outlets including the Majestic Box officer or online at www.BroadwayInSanAntonio.com and www. The movie begins on a beautiful, blue beach in Spain where Vince (Adrian Grenier) is located partying after divorcing his wife. The rest of gang decides to go to Spain to help Vince recover from his divorce. However, Vince does not seem depressed or angry about the divorce; he would rather go back to work after finding success as an actor. Thanks to Ari (Jeremy Piven), Vince has found a new acting project. Not only does Vince want to act, he also wants to direct the movie and cast Drama (Kevin Dillon) in a role. However, many people see Drama as a joke. Vince wants to call all the shots, leading to the start of many problems that occur along the way. One of those problems includes giving the state of Texas a bad rap. After using all the money the studio has given him to create this movie, Vince still has to ask Ari for more to cover the visual effects. This doesn’t sit well with Ari because that means he has to go to Texas and ask the contributor for the funds. Once in the Lone Star State, he visits Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thornton), who doesn’t want to give up the money just yet. He decides to send his son Travis McCredle (Haley Joel Osment) to L.A and see the movie, which doesn’t sit well with Ari. The problem is that Vince, E, and Turtle haven’t shown Ari the movie because they are scared of him hating it and having a heart When horror films come to mind, you usually think of blood, gore, violence, death, and screaming at the top of your lungs. Only one of these showed up in Insidious 3. In Leigh Whannel’s directorial debut, the horror flick proved that sometimes movies need a little more work done before it goes to the theatre. The prequel starts before the Lambert family, when Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) decides to pay a visit to retired paranormal investigator Elise Rainer. She wants to know if her mother is contacting her from the dead. However, the spirit is not her mother; it is an evil spirit from the dead who wants to take away her soul. This scares Elise. She advises sweet and innocent Quinn to never call for her mother because she may be calling the wrong spirit. After the meeting, Quinn tries to inform her father Sean Brenner (Dermot Mulroney) about her mother, but her father does not want to hear about. As a mourning husband, he wants to avoid the Could the boys of Entourage be growing up? (Courtesy photo) attack. Ari prays to God that this isn’t the worst movie in the world, reluctantly watches the movie and ends up enjoying it. Although Ari loves it, Travis McCredle hates it so much he tells his father not to send a paycheck, but for different reasons we’ll get to later. While Ari and Vince are trying to fix the problem of creating the movie, E (Kevin Connolly) is getting ready to have a baby with Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), but hasn’t yet given up on his days of being a womanizer. Knowing this, Sloan is unsure if she wants to ask E to be a full-time daddy. Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is now a successful entrepreneur and he even falls in love with UFC fighter Rhonda Rousey. After going through trials to get Rousey’s attention, you can’t help but be happy for Turtle because he has grown up and started taking life seriously. Altogether, the boys must man up in their professional and personal lives to save them from being another pack of washed up Hollywood actors, assistants, managers, and agents. Osment did an excellent job playing the Texan villain of Entourage. “The little boy from Forrest Gump has grown up,” as Ari points out. The reason why Travis hated Vince’s movie so much was because he had his eyes on a girl that he could never have. Emily Ratajkowski causes a stir in this movie, just as she did in Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” Ratajkowski’s character is not the only celebrity that makes a small appearance in the movie. The Entourage way of doing things is to add a ton of cameos that include actors, musicians, and athletes. But important ones to look out for are Entourage’s producer Mark Wahlberg, actor Armie Hammer, and comedian Bob Saget. Although Osment played a good villain, Jeremy Piven stole the “bad guy” show with his temper tantrums. He was so mad at one point that he punched the picture of a cat in his therapist’s office while his wife was watching. But even his character grew up a little and ended up realizing that it was time for him to not be afraid and take risks, something a workaholic doesn’t usually understand. Ultimately, the movie gives the ending that we were all hoping for. It goes to show that if you want to be a hard working actor, you have to fight for everything until you get what you want, even if it takes 20 years. The boys, now men, have proven that Hollywood is a place where success can be possible if you surround yourself with an “entourage” that will fight for it right along with you. topic of his deceased wife. Then, unfortunate events start to happen to Quinn including getting hit by a car that almost killed her, but left her with two broken legs. She also begins to hear things, and was even thrown to the floor by the spirit, causing her to wear a neck brace. She is so physically weak that the evil spirit could have taken her away on any given day. While all of this is happening, Elise is aware of what is going on, and decides to help Quinn after seeing signs everywhere that Quinn needs her. She tries again only to find in the other world that another evil spirit is there to kill Elise. She is once again afraid to help Quinn and runs from Quinn’s house. Elise then gets a visitor to inform her how strong she is and how she has the power to kill the spirit. Sean Brenner is desperate to end this insanity so he hires so-called ghost hunters (Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell) to cleanse the house. The boys are in for a surprise when Quinn almost kills them and her father after half of her soul is taken away by the evil spirit. This proved that the two men were nothing but frauds. When they are ready to leave, Elise comes back to try to save Quinn before it was too late (third times a charm). When I first saw the trailer for “Insidious 3,” I was expecting to see a movie that was going to have so much horror I would be screaming inside of the theatre. Unfortunately, the movie did not show the drama and excitement you expected because it did not have any mystery. In other words, the movie was very predictable. For example, in one scene Quinn was knocking on her wall to see if the cute boy from next door was going to knock back. Once he supposedly did, she texted him to ask him where he was. Not at home of course, it was the evil spirit scaring her. As for the film’s characters, Lin Shaye was the powerful force of the movie. If you know the literature term “round character,” you will see that Shaye changed Elise Rainer from a scared woman into a brave, warrior who could surpass any “bad” spirits. Her great acting was what kept me glued to the screen. Ultimately, it is best to not only keep the same cast from the first two movies, but to also be aware that if a movie is going to be classified as horror, then it must carry the qualities tied to the scream. Ratings: Instant Classic Excellent Good Okay Awful Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) knows that evil is right around the corner. (Courtesy photo) 4-D LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO SeaWorld Parks honor World Oceans Day By Keanna Whisenhunt SeaWorld San Antonio will join with SeaWorld Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego in celebrating World Oceans Day on Monday, June 8. This year’s celebration will kick off a new theme: Healthy oceans, healthy planet. This slogan will unite millions in taking action in the fight to prevent and reduce plastic pollution. With the use of the “better bag challenge”, employees of SeaWorld Parks and volunteers will encourage others to take the pledge to use reusable bags in lieu of disposables for an entire year. This will decrease the amount of plastic bags found in oceans and better protect animals that live in the ocean from the dangers of plastic pollution. SeaWorld Parks have already begun taking steps to reduce pollution by using only 100 percent recycled paper bags. In 1992, the Canadian government introduced a proposal for the concept of World Oceans Day. This plan initiated an urgency to officially declare June 8 as World Oceans Day. As the leading promoter and coordinator of this global event, the World Oceans Project organization sparked a petition in 2002 to the United Nations. With the help of partnerships and thousands of petition signatures from supporters, the World Oceans Project succeeded in making the day one to celebrate, honor, and encourage the efforts of organizations and people all around the world who take a stand in making the heart of our planet better. Organizations from all over are joining in on the fun of edu- cating others about the dangers of pollution and encouraging them to join the global “better bag challenge.” The Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C., the San Antonio Zoo, Terra Nova National Park in Newfoundland , Canada, and The Blue Ocean Business Summit in Illinois, are just a few of the many organizations that will unite to make our oceans cleaner, and safer for humans and animals. SeaWorld San Antonio will provide activities where guests can meet education specialists and SeaWorld Rescue team members to learn more about how to help keep oceans clean.
