He left on Friday of this past week. We will miss him very much I am sure. As I write this (August 1st) we are not sure yet who will be coming to take his place. Bishop wants to meet with the Hispanic priests on August 14th to decide the clergy changes that affect those with Hispanic populations. I am sure I should be able to announce to the parish this Sunday (August 16th) who our new Associate Pastor will be. In the meantime, I have asked Fr. Eichhoff to come today and help us with the 9:00 a.m. Mass. When I find out who the Associate Pastor will be I will also announce any Mass changes that might occur because of the change. I hope we don’t have to make any changes but if the Associate doesn’t communicate well in English we might have to adjust our schedule especially during the week. I will let you know today. As you know it is not easy to accept changes but it is necessary nonetheless. Let us pray for each other in this time of transition. I hope that when you read this letter the convent will have been almost completely finished and ready to receive the sisters for their visit. I am so appreciative of all those who worked so hard on this project especially the Knights of Columbus. They started about a year ago and in the course of the year replaced all of the windows, put in brand new heating and air conditioning, painted all the rooms, refurbished the kitchen cabinets, refinished the wood floors, and put in a new bathroom and fixed up the old bathroom, put up a privacy fence, and placed furniture for the sisters as well as decorated. Now we just have to wait until the sisters are able to come and occupy the space which I hope will be soon. They have their Visa interview at the Embassy next week and so we should know something soon about their visit to Tulsa to meet our August 16, 2015 Bishop and see their new convent. Let us all say a prayer for the success of this venture. The sisters will be helping us in our pastoral work of teaching and visiting the sick and strengthening our families as well as a multitude of other things that our parish needs at this time. This week on Saturday, August 22nd, the Queenship of Mary and Feast of her Immaculate Heart will be a special day for those who attend a retreat by Father Elkin Gonzalez here at our parish. Father Elkin served here at our parish as as Associate Pastor for several years before going to Rome to study for a Doctorate in Spiritual Theology. He did his research in the prayer experience of St. Teresa of Avila and thus is an expert in the spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila. The theme of the retreat will be Mary and Our Spiritual Growth. The retreat will be held in the Sister Jamesetta Room and is open to all. We hope to have baby sitting available as well as coffee and donuts and a snack about midmorning. The retreat will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will include two talks, an opportunity for personal prayer, questions and answers, and will conclude with a sung Mass in Latin to honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I hope that everyone will take advantage of this excellent opportunity to learn more about your faith and to deepen your experience of prayer. It would be good if we had some idea of how many people to expect and so please call us at the parish office (918)836-2596 if you are planning to come. For those who speak Spanish there is an excellent event in Dallas called SABADO DE MILAGROS and includes such people as Father Pedro Nuñez, Padre Eduardo González, and Padre Teofilo Rodríguez as well as lay missionaries. The day centers on the marvelous power of healing that Jesus displays when we approach Him with faith. It is a day of praise and prayer, healing, and strengthening of families. For more information you can call 214-527-4839. The cost is only $20.00. There will probably be some of our leaders who attend Sts. Peter ans Paul. Perhaps if you are interested you could organize a car pool from here. Later on perhaps we can host one of these SABADOS DE MILAGROS here at our parish. But, for this time we can participate in one that is already organized. It will be held at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas and there will be 6,000 or 7,000 people present. hope you can go. We’ll be starting up our RCIA and Catechism classes very soon and I hope that everyone has registered so that we will be prepared with materials and teachers. If you wait until the last moment there might not be space for you and so you had better register now if you want your children to be enrolled in our catechism classes. At St. Thomas More they are already having to turn people away for lack of space. God bless each of you and I hope you have a good day. Sincerely yours, Father Timothy Davison Over 50 On Saturday, September 5th, at 5:30 pm we will meet at the Gary and Kathy Acox residence (just outside of Claremore) for a BBQ dinner. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If the alb is the premier baptismal garment, then why are there so many other styles of vesture in evidence in our parishes? In some places, altar servers and other ministers might wear a garment, usually black, called a cassock. Over that is normally worn a white garment (a “surplice”), reminiscent of the alb but much shorter, often of starched linen and trimmed with lace. The cassock is not a liturgical garment, but a clerical robe. Its origins lie in the religious habits of monks. By the late Middle Ages, diocesan priests and clerics increasingly were encouraged to emulate religious priests. Very small boys were often apprenticed to monasteries, especially for music education, and would be invested with a cassock and sometimes even inducted into the ranks of clerics. Fro centuries before the Reformation, it was required that all men entering higher education be clerics, and so the cassock and its variations became familiar academic garb. At the Reformation, many ministers retained a form of the cassock as ordinary dress, rejecting liturgical garments. In the seventeenth century, the English Civil War was in part provoked by the Archbishop of Canterbury’s insistence that ministers wear surplices. Although the Episcopal Church now retains “cassock and surplice” as the normal dress for lay men and women assisting at liturgy, Catholics are increasingly attentive to the deeply traditional treasure of the alb, our baptismal robe, when special liturgical vesture is needed.
